The Numerical Treatment Of A Simple Hydrodynamical Shock By The Von Neumann-Richtmyer Method, Charles F. Sprague Iii Jun 1955

The Numerical Treatment Of A Simple Hydrodynamical Shock By The Von Neumann-Richtmyer Method, Charles F. Sprague Iii

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

When the differential equations describing the flow of compressible fluids are derived under the assumptions that (1) forces in the fluid are due only to variations in pressure and (2) that the entropy of any volume element remains constant, it can be shown mathematically that these differential equations cannot have continuous solutions under all circumstances. If we adopt the notion of “shock discontinuities” in these solutions, the differential equations describing the flow in continuous regions together with conditions expressing the laws of conservation across the discontinuities suffice to completely determine the flow. An alternative procedure is to use a method, …

Geology Of The Southern Part Of The Fra Cristobal Range, Sierra County, New Mexico, Samuel Thompson Iii Jun 1955

Geology Of The Southern Part Of The Fra Cristobal Range, Sierra County, New Mexico, Samuel Thompson Iii

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Emphasis has been placed in this work on the structural features of the southern part of the Fra Cristobal Range in order to extend the studies in the Caballo Mountains area and the McRae Canyon area. By mapping in detail the structure of the Fra Cristobal range it is hoped that a better understanding of the adjoining Rio Grande and Jornada del Muerto depressions may be reached. As an added contribution, a Permian section was measured as these rocks are relatively undeformed and very well exposed in some parts of the range.

The field mapping was done in the spring …

The Hofmann Degradation Of Oxamide And Urea, Carmen Michael Cusano Jun 1955

The Hofmann Degradation Of Oxamide And Urea, Carmen Michael Cusano

Honors Theses

An amide may be degraded to an amine using the Hofmann reaction. The theoretical product of the Hofmann reaction of oxamide is hydrazine. The objective of this project was the production of hydrazine from oxamide. Since hydrazine could not be obtained from oxamide, an extensive study was made of the production of hydrazine from urea. It was hoped that the background gained in the study of the urea reaction could be applied to the original problem, i.e. the formation of hydrazine from oxamide. However, even with this background, no hydrazine was obtained from oxamide.

Radially Banded Precipitates In Gels, Robert Patrick De Sieno Jun 1955

Radially Banded Precipitates In Gels, Robert Patrick De Sieno

Honors Theses

The formation of a rhythmic band structure known as Liesegang rings, when silver ions diffuse into gelatin containing chromate ions is a well-known phenomenon. The object of this research project is to make a detailed study of another diffusion phenomenon obtained in the presence of mercury vapor. The emphasis of this thesis is on the quantitative aspect. The author has been concerned with the cause and composition of radial lines produced when silver ions diffuse through chromated gelatin in the presence of mercury vapor. A number of variables related to this project, such as length of reaction time, concentration and …

Electrodeposition And Cathode Potential, Roland Francis Dapo Jun 1955

Electrodeposition And Cathode Potential, Roland Francis Dapo

Honors Theses

The objective of electrodeposition and control of cathode potential is the qualitative and quantitative separation of metals from their solutions. It involves the problem: (1) measuring the cathode potential in relation to the solution in order selectively to plate any metal; (2) means of treating the solution to prevent the plating of more than one metal at any particular cathode potential. The present research involved the curve of cathode potential versus copper concentration, the designing and constructing of electronic units for automatic control, and the determination of voltage error in passing current through the saturated calomel electrode.

A Study Of The Effect Of Additives On Portland Cement, Sidney Gray Dunbar Jun 1955

A Study Of The Effect Of Additives On Portland Cement, Sidney Gray Dunbar

Honors Theses

First, hydration tests were made on cement samples containing various percentages of Sodium Methyl Siliconate and Sodium Silicate. It was decided that it would be easier to determine what effect an additive would have upon concrete, if concrete blocks were actually made. Therefore, many blocks were made containing different amounts of various additives. Some of the concrete blocks were cut into cubes and slabs. The cubes were tested for their compressive strength. The slabs were tested for their resistance to corrosion from hydrochloric, acetic, and lactic acids. Some slabs were coated with certain substances to see if the coatings would …

Alkylation Of Phenol, Raymond Joseph Thimineur Jun 1955

Alkylation Of Phenol, Raymond Joseph Thimineur

Honors Theses

The purpose of this research project is to study the alkylation of phenol with n-butyl alcohol and optically active l-sec-butyl alcohol using a chemically activated alumina catalyst. The reaction of n-butyl alcohol with phenol is studied to determine if the alcohol is rearranged to give the same products obtained by alkylating with sec-butyl alcohol. The object of reacting optically active l-sec-butyl alcohol with phenol is to determine if the optical activity is retained, decreased, or complete racimazation occurs with this catalyst.

Thermal And Arc Resistance Of Polyester Resin Glass Reinforced Laminates, Frederick B. Budnik Jun 1955

Thermal And Arc Resistance Of Polyester Resin Glass Reinforced Laminates, Frederick B. Budnik

Honors Theses

The heat resistance of several types of polyester resins are studied by measuring the flexural strength of glass reinforced laminates before and after conditioning at 200°C. Arc resistance readings are also taken. The type of saturated acid, glycol and monomer is varied. The ratio of saturated to unsaturated acid and the ratio of monomer to base resin is also studied. Chlorendic acid improves the heat resistance over phthalic and isophthalic acids but it lowers the arc resistance. Ethylene glycol yields resins with the highest flexural strengths. Styrene monomer content has little effect on heat resistance up to 40%. In the …

Thermodynamic Properties Of Water Adsorbed On Kaolinite, S. John Bennett Jun 1955

Thermodynamic Properties Of Water Adsorbed On Kaolinite, S. John Bennett

Theses and Dissertations

The object of the work presented in this thesis was to obtain quantitative values of the thermodynamic changes in water upon adsorption by kaolinite. Two methode were used. The first was a determination of the differential heat content and entropy of adsorption. The second method included a thermodynamic evaluation of the B.E.T. "c" constant expressed in terms of the Gibbs standard free energy of adsorption. The experimental data gave satisfactory results in determining the differential and standard thermodynamic functions or free energy, entropy, and heat content of adsorption. The adsorption of water on kaolinite appears to be a van der …

Certain Equivalence Relations In Transformation Semigroups, Carol G. Doss Jun 1955

Certain Equivalence Relations In Transformation Semigroups, Carol G. Doss

Masters Theses

The general object of this thesis is to study certain equivalence relations defined on a semigroup, in particular, to study certain equivalence relations defined on semigroups of single-valued transformations. We are interested in semigroups of transformations partly because every semigroup has as homomorphic image a semigroup of transformations (and hence a subsemigroup of a transformation semigroup of degree n for some n). This is a well-known fact, analogous to the Cayley Theorem on abstract groups, but we shall give a brief proof in Section 1. Section 1 is devoted to definitions and basic concepts. In Section 2 we prove some …

The Decomposition Of Solid Barium Nitrate By Gamma Rays, Lawrence E. Lamar May 1955

The Decomposition Of Solid Barium Nitrate By Gamma Rays, Lawrence E. Lamar

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Very little work has been done on the chemical effects produced during the irradiation of solid materials. Although some research has been reported concerning the action of ultraviolet light on solid nitrates, most of the information in the literature is based upon the use of nuclear radiations.

Two types of reaction mechanisms have been proposed by previous authors. The direct decomposition of the metal nitrate to give the nitrate and oxygen was concluded from measurements of optical absorption. The ionization of nitrate ion to yield mononitrogen trioxide which could disassociate after capture of an electron was also suggested. The mononitrogen …

The Mathematical Theory Of Meteorite Penetration Into Earth-Targets, Richard D. George May 1955

The Mathematical Theory Of Meteorite Penetration Into Earth-Targets, Richard D. George

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

A problem in mathematical ballistics of fundamental importance in meteoritics is investigated in this thesis, namely the problem of estimating the speed at which a meteorite of assigned shape, mass and density struck a specific earth-target, either from purely theoretical considerations or from penetration or other impact-effects actually observed and measured in the earth-target.

In the second chapter several methods for calculating impact-velocities based on terminal ballistic theory are developed. While some of these methods can be successfully applied to as many as 63 recovered meteorites, others are applicable only to a very few known meteorites because of the failure …

Hydrologic Data Collection Program For New Mexico, Ralph L. Strother May 1955

Hydrologic Data Collection Program For New Mexico, Ralph L. Strother

Civil Engineering ETDs

The objective of this thesis is to present a program for the collection of basic hydrologic data for the state of New Mexico. It is an expansion of the existing program which currently becomes more inadequate with the progressively extensive use of the water resources of the state. The need for hydrologic data for planning and operation of water use and control structures far exceeds that obtained by the existing program.

Types of data reported upon are climatological, stream flow, ground water, quality of water, suspended sediment, snow cover and reservoir, valley and channel sedimentation. For the purposes presented herein …

The Influence Of Soil Moisture Conditions On The Absorption Of Phosphorus By Plants From Calcareous Soils, T. J. Denman May 1955

The Influence Of Soil Moisture Conditions On The Absorption Of Phosphorus By Plants From Calcareous Soils, T. J. Denman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Phosphorus is one of the major plant nutrients secured from the soil. The object of many investigations has been to discover the nature of the processes by which the soil supplies phosphorus to plants, and to determine the influence of soil factors upon these processes. Although much knowledge has been gained, these processes and the effects of soil factors upon them are still not clearly defined.

One factor which profoundly affects plant growth is the amount and relative availability of soil moisture. The results of some investigations have suggested that this factor may also have considerable influence on the absorption …

The Salt Lake Group In Cache Valley, Utah And Idaho, Robert D. Adamson May 1955

The Salt Lake Group In Cache Valley, Utah And Idaho, Robert D. Adamson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Fluvial and lacustrine sediments of great thickness accumulated in the intermountain basins of the western United States during Tertiary time. The Salt Lake group in northern Utah and parts of surrounding states is a conspicuous stratigraphic unit of these basins. The "beds of light color" in Morgan Valley in the Wasatch Mountains of northern Utah were named the "Salt Lake group" by Hayden (1869) because of similar occurrences in Salt Lake Valley and because he reasoned that the succession could be divided into formations. Similar rocks crop out in Ogden Valley, north of Morgan Valley, and in Cache Valley, Utah …

A Management Study Of The Cache Elk Herd, Norman V. Hancock May 1955

A Management Study Of The Cache Elk Herd, Norman V. Hancock

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

American elk, by virtue of their distribution, were the most cosmopolitan members of the cervid family at the time of white settlement of North America. At this early date elk were present in every major region of what is now continental United States, as well as in northern Mexico. they likewise were abundant in upper and lower Canada, though records do Lot corroborate their presence too far north on the Atlantic coast. Although generally existent throughout the western states, elk were sparsely distributed in Nevada, southern Utah, and most of Arizona and New Mexico. Paucity of elk was also noted …

Preparation, Purification And Cis-Trans Isomerization Of 2-Butene-1, 4-Diol, Roman Stephan Slysh May 1955

Preparation, Purification And Cis-Trans Isomerization Of 2-Butene-1, 4-Diol, Roman Stephan Slysh

Honors Theses

The preparation of cis- and trans-2-butene-1,4-diol has been reported in chemical literature by numerous workers. A well established procedure to obtain the cis isomer is to hydrogenate 2-butyne-1,4-diol at two to four atmospheres pressure in the presence of catalysts, such as Raney nickel or colloidal palladium. This reduction is selective and can be stopped easily at the ethylenic stage. The reaction has been studied by Lozac'h who stated that the Raman spectrum of 2-butene-1,4-diol prepared in this way indicates the presence of the cis iomer only. Lozac'h does not mention the degree of purity of this product and nothing could …

Geology Of A Portion Of The Hand Mine, Argenta Mining District, Beaverhead County, Montana, John Thomas Richards May 1955

Geology Of A Portion Of The Hand Mine, Argenta Mining District, Beaverhead County, Montana, John Thomas Richards

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The Hand Mine is located in the Argenta Mining District near the town of Argenta. The area surrounding the Hand Mine is characterized by intense thrusting, folding, and igneous activity. The area mapped by the author is in the southeast portion of the mine and differs from the rest of the mine in that no commercial ore has been found. The writer concludes that the steep faulting and flatlying bodies are of two different ages, and that intense oxidation has altered the ore minerals to plumbojarosite.

Oxidized Copper Mineralization Along The Continental Fault Near Butte, Montana, Theodore H. Eyde May 1955

Oxidized Copper Mineralization Along The Continental Fault Near Butte, Montana, Theodore H. Eyde

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Located in the fault zone of the Continental fault near the western edge of Boulder batholith of southwestern Montana the oxidized copper deposits are developed by three open pit mines, one of which is a presently in operation. Copper has been deposited by descending cold solutions which have leached copper from the surrounding quartz monzonite and deposited within the crushed fault zone. Local high grade 'bunches' of ore occur along narrow limonite veins, remnants of primary sulfide veins which have been enriched by the descending cold solutions.

Condensation Reaction Of Terephthaladehyde And Acetophenone, Lloyd J. Mitchell Jan 1955

Condensation Reaction Of Terephthaladehyde And Acetophenone, Lloyd J. Mitchell

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The plant pigments constitute a fascinating group of compounds whose constitution has only recently been partially clarified. Roughly speaking, there are two main groups of pigment: the plastids, associated with the protoplasmic structure of plants, and the anthocyanins, generally found in solution in the cell sap. The term “anthocyanin” is derived from the Greek, “antho” signifying flower and “cyan” meaning blue, and was introduced by the botanist Marquart in 1835 to designate the blue pigments of flowers. It has since been extended to include all of the pigments of this group, the anthocyanin pigments being responsible for the innumerable shades …

Stream Piracy And Glacial Diversion Of Little Missouri River, North Dakota, Emmett R. Schmitz Jan 1955

Stream Piracy And Glacial Diversion Of Little Missouri River, North Dakota, Emmett R. Schmitz

Theses and Dissertations

Bedrock river terraces, as much as 275 to 500 feet above the present Little Missouri, are remnants of a former floodplain. The presence of these former shallow valley floor (Little Missouri Terrace No. 4) along the pre-glacial channel and east and north of the Killdeer Mountains suggests several pre-glacial rivers.

Peripheral precipitation in advance of the Kansan-Illinoian glacier, head-ward erosion with consequent new gradient breached the divide between the pre-glacial Little Missouri River and the “Medicine Stone” River, (herein named, after a local landmark), which flowed eastward into pre-glacial Missouri River.

The history of that portion of the Little Missouri …

Correlation Functions For Use In Small Angle X-Ray Scattering, James Edwin Thomas Jr. Jan 1955

Correlation Functions For Use In Small Angle X-Ray Scattering, James Edwin Thomas Jr.

Masters Theses

"Thus, the determination of the structure of the material, and obtaining a distribution function which will enable the theoretical scattering to be predicted is the major problem.

In this work the diffraction material shall be considered to contain scattering regions of identical geometrical forms at such a distance from one another that they will essentially scatter the incident beam independently of their closest neighbor. An effort will be made to determine a correlation function characteristic of these forms, which may be interpreted as a distribution function, that might allow the low angle scattering pattern to be predicted. This correlation function …

Separation Of Germanium, Lead, Zinc, And Cadmium By Anion Exchange, Franklin Maynard Hill Jan 1955

Separation Of Germanium, Lead, Zinc, And Cadmium By Anion Exchange, Franklin Maynard Hill

Masters Theses

"The object of this study was to investigate the ion exchange behavior of germanium and apply the anion exchange technique for the separation of germanium, cadmium, lead, and zinc.

A new interest in germanium has developed because of its recent industrial application as a semi-conductor. Analytical methods for the separation and analysis of germanium in low concentrations have not been perfected. Krause and Johnson, in a recent review, discussed and evaluated a number of methods.

Most of the methods for the analysis of germanium require a preliminary separation. The analytical methods for germanium reported in the literature are troublesome and …

Addition Of Ketene To Ethylene Oxide, John Philip Friedrich Jan 1955

Addition Of Ketene To Ethylene Oxide, John Philip Friedrich

Masters Theses

"The object of this work was to study the reaction between ethylene oxide and ketene, and if possible, to isolate and identify the postulated γ-butyrolactone. Although the results could hardly be described as completely gratifying, they were at least in a sense positive. Many possibilities remain with regard to further modifications of the experimental work on this problem, however it is the author's sincere wish that this investigation will serve some useful purpose in the future"--Introduction, page 4.
