Recrystallization Of High Purity Aluminum, Virgil H. Griswold Jr.
Recrystallization Of High Purity Aluminum, Virgil H. Griswold Jr.
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
If a metal is first cold-worked and then heated to a sufficient temperature for an adequate length of time, the hardening properties due to cold-working disappear, and the metal will return more or less to its original state. Upon examination of the microstructure, we find that new grains have replaced the old grains through what is called recrystallization. The final size of the recrystallized grains depends upon three important variables--the degree of cold-work or deformation, annealing temperature, and annealing time.
Experiments On The Life Of Self-Quenching Geiger Mueller Counters, Raymond C. Opperman
Experiments On The Life Of Self-Quenching Geiger Mueller Counters, Raymond C. Opperman
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
Because of the several superior properties of counters containing organic vapor as a quenching agent, it is desirable to extend the life of such counters. It is, therefore, of interest to determine the relative importance of factors which limit their useful life. It is also worthwhile to further the investigation of counters containing an inorganic gas as a quenching agent.
A Study Of The Effects Of The Chloride Ion On The Lead-Silver Anodes And On The Lead Tenor Of The Zinc Deposit In Zinc Electrolysis, William A. Mitchell
A Study Of The Effects Of The Chloride Ion On The Lead-Silver Anodes And On The Lead Tenor Of The Zinc Deposit In Zinc Electrolysis, William A. Mitchell
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
The electrolyte used in the commercial production of electrolytic zinc from zinc sulphate solutions contains small amounts of impurities each of which has its own effects upon the process. Impurities such as antimony, cobalt, nickel, and iron tend to lower the current efficiency while other impurities such as chlorine, fluorine, and nitrates tend to increase the corrosion of the lead anodes and thereby increase the lead tenor of the zinc deposit.
The Effect Of Germanium On The Current Efficiency In The Electrolysis Of Pure Zinc Sulfate Solution, Keith R. Bock
The Effect Of Germanium On The Current Efficiency In The Electrolysis Of Pure Zinc Sulfate Solution, Keith R. Bock
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
It has long been recognized that electrolytic zinc cells are extremely sensitive to impurities. In fact, certain impurities present in amounts as low as 0.1 mg/1 cause a serious loss of current efficiency. Also, the presence of several impurities in the electrolyte may accelerate the detrimental effect of each impurity.

The Indium-Mercury Constitutional Diagram, Bert E. Lake
The Indium-Mercury Constitutional Diagram, Bert E. Lake
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
Whenever metals differ greatly in electropositivity, intermetallic compounds are likely to form in preference to solid solutions. 21ercury and indium show a considerable difference in electropositivity. This would indicate that intermetallic compounds may play an important role in the constitutional diagram for the mercury-indium system.
The Effect Of Manganese On The Age Hardening Of Aluminum-Copper Alloys, Keith P. Burgess

The Reaction Of Some Sodium Salts Of Fatty Acids And Benzoic Acid With Α-Bromobenzyl Cyanide, Richard W. Perkins
The Reaction Of Some Sodium Salts Of Fatty Acids And Benzoic Acid With Α-Bromobenzyl Cyanide, Richard W. Perkins
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Fife (4) and O'Shaughnessy (12) have made a series of di-esters by allowing the sodium salts of various fatty acids to react with ethyl monochloracetate according to the following equation:
RCO2Na ≠ ClCH2CO2C2H5 ---------> RCO2CH2CO2C2H5 ≠ NaCl .
The mechanism of the reaction appears to be ionic and to involve the attack of an RCO2- ion on the carbon atom to which the chlorine atom is attached. As the RCO2- approaches this carbon atom the chlorine atom moves …
The Benefication Of A Low-Grade, Montana Scheelite Ore, Walter G. Parker
The Benefication Of A Low-Grade, Montana Scheelite Ore, Walter G. Parker

Effect Of Bicarbonate Ion And Root Aeration On Lime-Induced Chlorosis, Willard L. Lindsay
Effect Of Bicarbonate Ion And Root Aeration On Lime-Induced Chlorosis, Willard L. Lindsay
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Chlorosis in plants has been recognized as a devastating disease for over one-hundred and fifty years. It is easily recognized by a yellowing of the plant foilage and is associated with a reduced chlorophyll synthesis.
Chlorosis is found so frequently on calcareous soils that its cause is attributed at least in part to this soil factor. It is therefore referred to as lime-induced chlorosis. This type of chlorosis has become a serious problem, especially in many of the fruit-growing regions of Europe and the Western United States where the soils are calcareous. In Utah the disease is more destructive than …
The Determination Of Chlorine In Alkyl Chlorobenzoates To Establish Their Identity And Purity, Clifford R. Berres
The Determination Of Chlorine In Alkyl Chlorobenzoates To Establish Their Identity And Purity, Clifford R. Berres
Bachelors’ Theses
Four years ago an investigation began at Marquette University with the purpose of determining the value of alkyl chlorobenzoates as derivatives for alcohols in characterization work. The outcome of this initial investigation was the preparation of thirty compounds previously unreported in the literature, namely, the methyl through decyl, nonyl excepted, ortho- and para-chlorobenzoates, and 2,4 and 3,4 dichlorobenzoates. The method of preparation and physical constants of these compounds were determined by Mr. Robert Johnson who presented a thesis on the "Preparation of Alkyl Chlorobenzoates and Their Application as Alcohol Derivatives" in June, 1949.
A continuance of this investigation was undertaken …

An Azimuth-Stabililzed Balloon Platform, Alfred H. Spano
An Azimuth-Stabililzed Balloon Platform, Alfred H. Spano
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
In the study of Zodiacal Light, an interesting task is the determination of the intensity and the position of this glow on the celestial sphere. The problem of photographing this phenomenon from the earth’s surface has been hampered generally by the inevitable presence of the atmosphere between the camera and the object. However, it is expected that at the height of some thirty kilometers above the earth, the atmospheric haze will be reduced enough so that pictures of the zodiacal region may be obtained without significant absorption. To accomplish this, it is necessary to keep the balloon-borne camera pointed in …
Paleontology And Stratigraphy Of The Carboniferous Rocks Of The Placitas Region, Northern Sandia Mountains, Sandoval County, New Mexico, Donald Francis Toomey
Paleontology And Stratigraphy Of The Carboniferous Rocks Of The Placitas Region, Northern Sandia Mountains, Sandoval County, New Mexico, Donald Francis Toomey
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
A paleontologic and lithologic study of the Carboniferous rocks of the northern Sandia Mountains demonstrates that this predominantly marine sequence is divisible into several important series which are recognizable elsewhere.
The pre-Pennsylvanian rocks lack diagnostic fossils. However, correlation with a fossiliferous sequence in the southern Nacimiento Mountains, based on similar lithology and stratigraphic position, indicates a middle mississippian Meramec age for these rocks. The thickness ranges from 21 to 81 feet; they consist mainly of limestone associated with basal elastics. This sequence lies directly on Pre-Cambrian rocks. Nine sections have been measured and are shown geographically on three plates.

Oil Shales In Montana, Richard N. Miller
Oil Shales In Montana, Richard N. Miller
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
Montana has long been known to have very large resources of coal and oil, and undetermined amounts of oil shale. The reserves of coal and oil have been proven, in part, and have been produced commercially, but not much is known about the extent and apparent value of the oil shales. Under present .conditions, and according to standards set by the United States Bureau of Mines, the shales are not of commercial value. They are, however, a potentially valuable mineral resource, and portions of them will possibly be utilized, although not in the near future.

A Microcoulometric Study Of Adsorption On The Hydrogen Electrode, Ray Douglas Sothern
A Microcoulometric Study Of Adsorption On The Hydrogen Electrode, Ray Douglas Sothern
Master's Theses
Thie work was begun with the intention of studying the adsorption of organic compounds upon the hydrogen electrode. The fact that certain substances, even when present in extremely low concentration, will poison the electrode with which they are in contact shows clearly that these substances must be strongly adsorbed on the electrode surface. The problem or determining the amount absorbed at various concentration, temperatures, and pressures, however, required a method capable of detecting quantities of adsorbate in the ordor of 10-11 moles.
Coloring Matter In Camillia Japonica Flowers, Robert James Stoner
Coloring Matter In Camillia Japonica Flowers, Robert James Stoner
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The coloring matter in flowers has been used for centuries as a dye. Early man did not know the chemical nature of these coloring matters. Recent investigations have shown that the dark pigments whereas the lighter pigments of flowers are in the anthoxanthin group of pigments. Both of these groups of pigments have a heterocyclic structure. A large number of these pigments have been isolated and identified.
The object of this research was to isolate and identity the coloring matter in the Camillia japonica (Belgian red) flowers. This was done by extracting the pigment with methanol and then crystallizing the …
