Refinements Of The Concept Of Privacy In Distributed Computing, Entisar Seedi Alshammry
Theses and Dissertations
In light of the tremendous development of technology in the modern world in which we live, privacy concerns are increasing, especially after the massive spread of distributed computing systems and the technologies that depend on it, whether in personal devices or public services. Hence, this research proposes refinements on the concept of privacy for enhancing the development of privacy-related strategies in distributed computing systems to address the elements of privacy. In particular, the study introduces the new concept of Privacy Appetite to describe and model the nature of the relationship between the intended disclosure of private information and gained value …
Real-Time Full Face Closed Eyes Detection, Lucas De Morais Tramasso
Real-Time Full Face Closed Eyes Detection, Lucas De Morais Tramasso
Theses and Dissertations
Intelligent systems based on machine-learning techniques are becoming a common way of solving problems in many different areas. In this thesis, our goal is to apply machine learning to a computer vision problem. We propose a new solution to detect closed eyes in full-face images. Accurate detection of closed eyes can be used in many problems such as driver drowsiness detection, human-computer interaction, and computer user monitoring. Most algorithms used to detect blinks or closed eyes follow a similar workflow. They require detection of a region of interest that is then used with different algorithms and techniques to determine if …
A Machine Learning Approach To Forecasting Sep Events With Solar Activities, Jesse Scott Torres
A Machine Learning Approach To Forecasting Sep Events With Solar Activities, Jesse Scott Torres
Theses and Dissertations
Solar energetic particles (SEPs) are fast-moving events which can cause severe damage to astronauts and their equipment, and can disrupt communications on Earth. There are no clear patterns in solar activities which indicate whether an SEP is about to occur, making physics-based methods inaccurate for SEP forecasting. Therefore, in order to provide an advance warning so that astronauts are able to get to safety, we apply neural networks to the problems of forecasting SEP occurrence and intensity. Our algorithm for predicting SEP occurrence uses a combination of observed CME properties and derived features and achieves a TSS of 0.846 and …
Optimization Framework For Reconstructing Biomedical Images By Efficient Sample-Based Parameterization, Paul Richard Arbic Ii
Optimization Framework For Reconstructing Biomedical Images By Efficient Sample-Based Parameterization, Paul Richard Arbic Ii
Theses and Dissertations
An efficient computational approach for optimal reconstruction of binary-type images suitable for models in various biomedical applications is developed and validated. The methodology includes derivative-free optimization supported by a set of sample solutions with customized geometry generated synthetically. The entire framework has an easy to follow design due to a nominal number of tuning parameters which makes the approach simple for practical implementation in various settings, adjusting it to new models, and enhancing the performance. High efficiency in computational time is achieved through applying the coordinate descent method to work with individual controls in the predefined custom order. This technique …
Fire-Vegetation-Climate Interactions Across The Holocene On The U.S. Southeastern Coastal Plain, Mathew S. Boehm
Fire-Vegetation-Climate Interactions Across The Holocene On The U.S. Southeastern Coastal Plain, Mathew S. Boehm
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation research examined multiple proxy indicators in sediment cores from one lake and one wetland to reconstruct long-term relationships between fire, vegetation, and climate in the southeastern U.S.
At Lake Balboa (30.6992 N, 83.2031 W; 48 m elevation), a sinkhole pond located in southern Georgia, Bølling-Allerød conditions were sufficiently wet to maintain a shallow wetland at the site. Evidence for fire was minimal. Between 12,600 and 9200 cal yr BP, water availability declined, leading to a potential hiatus in sedimentation. During the early Holocene moisture availability increased, leading to greater primary productivity within and outside the lake, triggering an …

A vertex coloring c : V(G) → N of a non-trivial graph G is called a sigma coloring if σ(u) is not equal to σ(v) for any pair of adjacent vertices u and v. Here, σ(x) denotes the sum of the colors assigned to vertices adjacent to x. The sigma chromatic number of G, denoted by σ(G), is defined as the fewest number of colors needed to construct a sigma coloring of G. In this paper, we consider the sigma chromatic number of graphs obtained by deleting one or more of its edges. In particular, we study the difference σ(G)−σ(G−e) …
Onboard Autonomous Controllability Assessment For Fixed Wing Suavs, Brian Edward Duvall
Onboard Autonomous Controllability Assessment For Fixed Wing Suavs, Brian Edward Duvall
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Traditionally fixed-wing small Unmanned Arial Vehicles (sUAV) are flown while in direct line of sight with commands from a remote operator. However, this is changing with the increased popularity and ready availability of low-cost flight controllers. Flight controllers provide fixed-wing sUAVs with functions that either minimize or eliminate the need for a remote operator. Since the remote operator is no longer controlling the sUAV, it is impossible to determine if the fixed-wing sUAV has proper control authority. In this work, a controllability detection system was designed, built, and flight-tested using COTS hardware. The method features in-situ measurement and analysis of …

Parallelization Of The Advancing Front Local Reconnection Mesh Generation Software Using A Pseudo-Constrained Parallel Data Refinement Method, Kevin Mark Garner Jr.
Computer Science Theses & Dissertations
Preliminary results of a long-term project entailing the parallelization of an industrial strength sequential mesh generator, called Advancing Front Local Reconnection (AFLR), are presented. AFLR has been under development for the last 25 years at the NSF/ERC center at Mississippi State University. The parallel procedure that is presented is called Pseudo-constrained (PsC) Parallel Data Refinement (PDR) and consists of the following steps: (i) use an octree data-decomposition scheme to divide the original geometry into subdomains (octree leaves), (ii) refine each subdomain with the proper adjustments of its neighbors using the given refinement code, and (iii) combine all subdomain data into …
The Effects Of Security Framing, Time Pressure, And Brand Familiarity On Risky Mobile Application Downloads, Cody Parker
The Effects Of Security Framing, Time Pressure, And Brand Familiarity On Risky Mobile Application Downloads, Cody Parker
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
The current study examined the effects of security system framing, time pressure, and brand familiarity on mobile application download behaviors, with an emphasis on risk taking. According to the Prospect Theory, people tend to engage in irrational decision making, and make qualitatively different decisions when information is framed in terms of gains and losses (i.e., the framing effect). Past research has used this framing effect to guide the design of a risk display for mobile applications (apps), with the purpose of communicating the potential risks and minimizing insecure app selections. Time pressure has been shown to influence the framing effect …
Not Too Hot, Not Too Cold, But Moderately Variable: The Influence Of Environmental Variability On Coral Thermal Tolerance, Courtney Nicole Klepac
Not Too Hot, Not Too Cold, But Moderately Variable: The Influence Of Environmental Variability On Coral Thermal Tolerance, Courtney Nicole Klepac
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Anthropogenic climate change is causing an increase in the frequency and severity of marine heat waves, resulting in declining health of coral reef ecosystems worldwide. Coral bleaching events – the breakdown in symbiosis between the coral host and their intracellular photosynthetic algae – are increasingly common in recent years and contribute to widespread losses in coral cover. However, bleaching and heat stress responses vary across spatial scales both within and among coral species. Coral populations native to highly variable environments can have greater bleaching resistance than corals from more stable habitats and corals transplanted into these variable reef sites can …

Constraining Respired Carbon Storage In The Eastern Tropical Pacific Over The Last 25 Thousand Years Using Benthic Foraminiferal Boron/Calcium Ratios, Brian James Close
OES Theses and Dissertations
The storage of inorganic carbon in the deep Pacific Ocean is thought to play an important role in regulating both glacial-interglacial and millennial-scale atmospheric CO2 concentrations (Broecker and Barker 2007; Sigman et al., 2010). A recent study by Loveley et al. (2017) showed that sedimentary authigenic uranium (aU) concentrations, a proxy for suboxic bottom-water conditions, increased significantly in the Eastern Equatorial Pacific (EEP) during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM, 18 kyr – 23 kyr). If this is correct, the low-oxygen, CO2-rich waters would also have a lower pH and a lower carbonate ion concentration ([CO32- …

English Theses & Dissertations
Rising waters and the increasing devastation of flood events make coastal resilience a significant issue in the Hampton Roads region of Virginia, particularly in the city of Norfolk. Enhancing resilience requires ongoing stakeholder engagement designed to invite dialogue while encouraging cross-jurisdictional collaboration and comprehensive problem-solving. Climate change games have been employed to support these endeavors. This dissertation provides a response to the following research questions: 1) What is the origin of the climate change game genre? 2) Why are key stakeholders in coastal resilience using climate change games? And 3) how do these games operate for these key stakeholders? To …
Mementomap: A Web Archive Profiling Framework For Efficient Memento Routing, Sawood Alam
Mementomap: A Web Archive Profiling Framework For Efficient Memento Routing, Sawood Alam
Computer Science Theses & Dissertations
With the proliferation of public web archives, it is becoming more important to better profile their contents, both to understand their immense holdings as well as to support routing of requests in Memento aggregators. A memento is a past version of a web page and a Memento aggregator is a tool or service that aggregates mementos from many different web archives. To save resources, the Memento aggregator should only poll the archives that are likely to have a copy of the requested Uniform Resource Identifier (URI). Using the Crawler Index (CDX), we generate profiles of the archives that summarize their …

Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering At Hall A, Jefferson Lab, Mohamed Nuhman Hashir Rashad
Physics Theses & Dissertations
The Standard Model of particle physics defines quarks and leptons as the basic building blocks of all matter. The interaction between them are mediated by force carrying gauge bosons. Quantum ChromoDynamics (QCD), the theory that explains the strong interaction is still not complete enough to derive the physical observables of a Quark-Gluon system from the fundamental degrees of freedom of it’s constituents. Experimentally observable single particle densities provide important insights into our understanding of the quark-gluon system and hence help fill in the gaps of QCD. Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) provide simultaneous information of both spacial and longitudinal momentum distributions …
Contribution Of Submarine Groundwater Discharge To Select Biogeochemical Fluxes In St. Louis Bay, Mississippi, Haley Spaid
Contribution Of Submarine Groundwater Discharge To Select Biogeochemical Fluxes In St. Louis Bay, Mississippi, Haley Spaid
Master's Theses
This thesis assesses the role of submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) in St. Louis Bay, Mississippi. Located along the northern Gulf of Mexico, St. Louis Bay (SLB) is a semi-enclosed bay that is important to the local area for recreation and tourism. SGD is the movement of any water into the water column across the sediment-water interface. In coastal environments, SGD can be a source of a variety of substances including nutrients and pollutants. In this study, a steady state mass balance approach was used to quantify SGD flux for SLB using 223Ra, 224Ra, and Ba. Using the water …
Sediment Provenance Of Tsunami Deposits: Implications For Assessing The Relative Intensity Of Paleotsunamis From The Sendai Coastline Of Japan, Tiffany Otai
Master's Theses
The 2011 Tohoku tsunami impacted the northeastern coast of Japan and caused unexpected damages due to the underestimation of this type of hazard. Of particular importance is the fact that geologic evidence for a predecessor event, the Jogan tsunami (CE 869), could have forecasted the severity of the 2011 Tohoku event. While the timing of tsunamis is important for effective hazard mitigation, outside of the 2011 Tohoku event, the intensity of past tsunamis remains unclear. To understand paleotsunami intensity, it is important to document characteristics of modern analogues like the 2011 event. This study utilizes surface distributions of foraminifera from …
Stability Analysis Of Krylov Subspace Spectral Methods For The 1-D Wave Equation In Inhomogeneous Media, Bailey Rester
Stability Analysis Of Krylov Subspace Spectral Methods For The 1-D Wave Equation In Inhomogeneous Media, Bailey Rester
Master's Theses
Krylov subspace spectral (KSS) methods are high-order accurate, explicit time-stepping methods for partial differential equations (PDEs) that also possess the stability characteristic of implicit methods. Unlike other time-stepping approaches, KSS methods compute each Fourier coefficient of the solution from an individualized approximation of the solution operator of the PDE. As a result, KSS methods scale effectively to higher spatial resolution. This thesis will present a stability analysis of a first-order KSS method applied to the wave equation in inhomogeneous media.

Light Conditions During Desiccation And Rehydration Impact The Recovery Of Cultured Timmiella Crassinervis, Sotodeh Ebrahimi
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Many terrestrial mosses of xeric environments experience excess light during extended periods of desiccation. While dry or hydrated, excess light energy can lead to formation of reactive oxygen species and photoinhibition (e.g. damage to Photosystem II) which affects photosynthetic stress and efficiency. This study aimed to determine the effect of duration dry and light intensity (PAR) on cultured shoots of the chaparral moss Timmiella crassinervis, as well as to elucidate the optimal rehydration light conditions for this species. I hypothesized that 1) mosses exposed to higher light intensities during desiccation would incur more damage upon rehydration than those exposed to …

Gardasil Vaccine Trends Within Nevada, California, And The U.S.: A Comparative Study, Karen S. Gutierrez
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Despite decreasing incidence in cervical cancer in the U.S., there continues to be an increase in public health concern for cervical cancer worldwide. Recent studies report that individuals are disproportionately affected based on region, sex, and race. Additionally, the human papillomavirus (HPV) attributable cancers may be reduced between 70% and 90% through the universal use of HPV-vaccines. In order to expand current knowledge and implement intervention programs in Nevada, it is critical to examine the associations among the Gardasil vaccine, cervical cancer screening, and adverse events following immunization as well as to understand the different socio-demographic subgroups affected. To our …
Tectonic Evolution Of The Tucki Mountain Metamorphic Core Complex, Southeastern California: Evidence For Late Cretaceous Extension Within The Sevier-Laramide Orogen, William Killey Barba
Tectonic Evolution Of The Tucki Mountain Metamorphic Core Complex, Southeastern California: Evidence For Late Cretaceous Extension Within The Sevier-Laramide Orogen, William Killey Barba
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The exhumation of Cordilleran metamorphic core complexes from mid-crustal depths in the western U.S. Basin and Range Province has been classically associated with Cenozoic extension. However, recent studies reveal that extensional tectonic exhumation of numerous metamorphic core complexes initiated during the Late Cretaceous. New geologic mapping and structural analysis integrated with geochronology and thermochronology data provide evidence for a Late Cretaceous extensional shear zone, previously interpreted as Miocene in age, within the Tucki Mountain metamorphic core complex on the western flank of Death Valley, California. The shear zone occurs within the immediate footwall of the Miocene-Pliocene Tucki Mountain detachment fault …
Constraining Viscous Protoplanetary Disk Models Using Alma Kinematic Observations, Ian Rabago
Constraining Viscous Protoplanetary Disk Models Using Alma Kinematic Observations, Ian Rabago
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Recent molecular line observations by ALMA have revealed the 3D velocity structure of protoplanetary disks, providing new insight on the mechanisms of disk accretion and ring/gap formation. Although the constant α viscous disk model has been widely used to describe the disk surface density evolution, it may not adequately describe the gas velocity at different disk heights. By carrying out viscous hydrodynamic simulations, we confirm that the vertical velocity structure varies considerably between these models. On the other hand, the surface density evolution of the disk is only dependent on the vertically integrated stress, and does not depend on a …

Bayesian Variable Selection Methods For Genome-Wide Association Studies With Categorical Phenotypes, Benazir Rowe
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) attempt to find the associations between genetic markers and studied traits (phenotypes). The problem of GWAS is complex and various methods have been developed to approach it. One of such methods is Bayesian variable selection (BVS). We describe the BVS methods in detail and demonstrate the ability of BVS method Posterior Inference via Model Averaging and Subset Selection (piMASS) to improve the power of detecting phenotype-associated genetic loci, potentially leading to new discoveries from existing data without increasing the sample size.
We present several ways to improve and extend the applicability of piMASS for GWAS. The …
Effects Of Wildfire On Plant And Insect Pollinator Communities In The Mojave Desert, Nha Trang Vivian Sam
Effects Of Wildfire On Plant And Insect Pollinator Communities In The Mojave Desert, Nha Trang Vivian Sam
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The changing fire regime of landscapes across the Mojave Desert has prompted considerable research on its effects on plant community recovery, but it has not been widely studied what effects wildfire may have on native pollinators and the vital ecosystem services they provide. Ecological changes from increased wildfire severity from invasive exotic annual grasses will likely continue influencing pollinator habitats and floral resources. Understanding the effects that wildfires have on pollinators is valuable to make decisions as to whether active management and restoration activities are required to conserve ecologically vital pollinator functions. The intention of this thesis was to examine …

Shakespeare’s As You Like It is a comedy whose main character, Rosalind, is forced out of her home among the upper caste of society through no fault of her own, but because of an issue with her father. She moves into the pastoral unknown disguised as a man to avoid the issues that come traveling as a woman, outside the protection of the home. Along the way, she finds pleasure with the power she holds as a man. She is heard when she speaks as a man and she is given access to knowledge she would not be given as …
Equivalences Of Determinacy Between Levels Of The Borel Hierarchy And Long Games, And Some Generalizations, Katherine Aimee Yost
Equivalences Of Determinacy Between Levels Of The Borel Hierarchy And Long Games, And Some Generalizations, Katherine Aimee Yost
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This thesis will be primarily focused on directly proving that the determinacy of Borel games in X^ω is equivalent to the determinacy of certain long open games, from a fragment of ZFC that’s well-known to be insufficient to prove Borel determinacy. The main theorem is a level by level result which shows the equivalence between determinacy of open games in a long tree, [Υ^α], and determinacy of Σ_0^α games in X^ω. In Chapter 9, we mimic the proof used in our main theorem to show that the determinacy of clopen games in the product space X^ω × ω^ω is equivalent …
