Zinc Relationships Of Some Utah Soils, Wilford Derby Laws Jr.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Recent reports from many parts of the United States indicate that the so-called zinc-deficiency disease is wide spread. It affects some varieties of trees in some areas and all varieties in other areas, and occurs from Florida westward to the Pacific coast and northward to the Canadian line. Although the disease is more prevalent in trees, it is also known to affect annual plants.

A recent survey of Utah orchards shows a wide-spread occurrence of little-leaf, a zinc deficiency disease, in fruit trees. The disease was found to be common on the upper sandy soils between Ogden and Salt Lake …

The Preparation Of Some Typical Organoboron Compounds, Glen David Barbaras May 1941

The Preparation Of Some Typical Organoboron Compounds, Glen David Barbaras

Bachelors’ Theses

Organoboron compounds have long been known, the first being prepared by Frankland as early as 1862. No particular interest in these compounds was aroused, how ever, because of the difficulty and expense of their preparation as well as their extreme instability. From time to time further attempts at their preparation were made and a few reactions were ob served. With the rise of modern electronic theories of chemical combination, however, organoboron compounds were discovered to exhibit properties and undergo reactions which would substantiate these theories. Consequently, since 1936 possibly over a hundred of these compounds of many different types have …

Conodonts From The Marathon Basin, Brewster County, Texas, Roy William Graves Jr.

Masters Theses

"Conodonts were discovered in the limestones of the Marathon region in the Big Bend country, Brewster County, Texas, as a result of field work during the summer of 1939. This was not the first known occurrence of these fossils from this region, however, as King earlier mentioned the occurrence of conodonts in siliceous shales of Devonian age. The discovery of conodonts in the Ordovician and Pennsylvanian limestones of the area had its inception in the attempt to determine whether the Dimple limestone (lower Pennsylvanian) or Maravillas limestone (upper Ordovician) was involved in a fault that was being mapped. These limestones …

Studies On The Quantitative Analysis Of Rhenium And Its Occurrence In The Products Of Molybdenite Processing, Walter Keith Dean

Masters Theses

"There is at the present time no commercially developed source of the metal rhenium in the United States. Since this metal is known to exist in molybdenite, it was felt that a study of the products of the metallurgical processing of this mineral might reveal a source of rhenium that could e developed. The Climax Molybdenum Co. provided a number of samples from their smelter at Langloth, Pennsylvania. Although an improved method for the quantitative estimation of rhenium was recently published, its accuracy was not high and the procedure exacting and time-consuming. These combined factors led to the selection of …

The Unit Plan Versus The Textbook Plan Of Teaching Arithmetic To Seventh And Eighth Grade Pupils, Arthur P. Harvey

Master's Theses

The present day trends in education seem to indicate the desirability of its becoming more and more a socialized education. This trend will no doubt have a more significant bearing on some subjects or studies in the school curriculum than on other subjects. The Kansas public elementary schools have recently adopted a Unit Program in School Studies, which includes history, civics, geography, science, and hygiene in an attempt to contribute better to the socialized idea. This Unit Program, however, does not make direct provision for English, spelling, arithmetic, and penmanship .Naturally, perhaps, comes the question to many teachers of why …

A Study Of The Effect Of Certain Variables On The Titration Of Silicic Acid, James S. Walker Jun 1940

A Study Of The Effect Of Certain Variables On The Titration Of Silicic Acid, James S. Walker

Honors Theses

If a solution of sodium silicate is titrated with a strong acid, using methyl orange as an indicator, a very different end point is obtained from that obtained using phenolphthalein as an indicator. This difference is well established as being due to the ionization of silicic acid, either acidically or basically after the soda in the silicate has been neutralized by the strong acid. It was the intention of the experimenter to study this acid from the standpoint of the effect of certain variables, in the titration of sodium silicate with a strong acid, on the end points obtained.
