Thomas William Robertson, The Mid-Victorian Dramatist, James A. Fitzpatrick May 1932

Thomas William Robertson, The Mid-Victorian Dramatist, James A. Fitzpatrick

Bachelors’ Theses

It is the purpose of this thesis to determine the position of Thomas William Robertson in the dramatic history of the nineteenth century, and to discover what contributions, if any, he made to the drama of this period. In addition to making a careful analysis of Robertson's more important dramas, I have read all the outstanding dramatic histories of the middle of the last century and some of its popular dramatic works. In my investigation of this problem I have explained the dramatic conditions of the early and mid-nineteenth century, revealed the characteristic tendencies of its popular plays, set forth …

The Design Of A Multiple Intake Drainage Well, Orville L. Eliason May 1932

The Design Of A Multiple Intake Drainage Well, Orville L. Eliason

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The reclamation of water-logged land by suitable yet inexpensive forms of drainage is becoming a problem of constantly increasing magnitude. A fairly large portion of the extensive land areas, once considered as worthless has proved to be valuable by the introduction of proper drainage systems. Land areas, in which drainage in its simpler forms has proved inadequate, could perhaps be made valuable were it possible to develop an inexpensive yet effective form of drainage.

This paper has been prepared primarily for a consideration of poorly drained land areas and a possible means of their reclamation by a suitable choice and …

The Effect Of Fruit Acids On Aluminum, Glenore M. Dugan May 1932

The Effect Of Fruit Acids On Aluminum, Glenore M. Dugan

Bachelors’ Theses

Aluminum has been used in cooking utensils for about thirty years and is still the favorite material employed. There is no disagreeable taste, odor or discoloration discernible from its use.

There have been many experiments to prove that aluminum does not depreciate the quality of the food cooked in it. It does, however, add itself to the acidic and basic foods cooked therein. The amount taken up by neutral foods is negligible.

For experimental purposes, fruit juices were chosen as the attacking substances and the strips of aluminum were of the quality used in ordinary cooking utensils, not cast aluminum.

Throwing Power Of A Chromium Plating Bath Containing Hydrofluoric Acid Instead Of Sulfphuric Acid, Clarence E. Barta May 1932

Throwing Power Of A Chromium Plating Bath Containing Hydrofluoric Acid Instead Of Sulfphuric Acid, Clarence E. Barta

Bachelors’ Theses

Chromium was discovered in 1797 by a Frence Chemist named Vauquelin who gave it its name from a Greek word for color because of its variety of colors which its various compounds show. The electrode-deposition of Chromium from a Chromium acid solution has been an accomplished feature for the past century but it has only been in the past few years that the mechanism of the process has been sufficiently understood to permit its commercial application.

Harding and Barrows state that it is possible to obtain satisfactory Chromium deposits from Chromic acid baths containing compounds other than sulfuric acid which …

A Study Of The Inhibiting Value Of Various Separators On The Plating Of Lead, Lawrence E. Ehrnst May 1932

A Study Of The Inhibiting Value Of Various Separators On The Plating Of Lead, Lawrence E. Ehrnst

Bachelors’ Theses

This thesis was suggested by the work of Mr. B. J. Pozorski and Mr. W. Adashek. Mr. Pozorski investigated the inhibiting qualities of various separators when placed between two platinum electrodes in a copper sulfate solution. Mr. Adashek worked on the efficiency of various lead plating solutions using lead electrodes and electrlyes containing soluble lead salts. Combining the work of these men, the author is investigating the prohibitive plating properties of various separator using a lead plating solution. By so doing, the investigation has a closer relationship to the actual performance of the storage battery .

Current Efficiency Of Various Chromium Plating Baths, Clarence R. Hanus May 1932

Current Efficiency Of Various Chromium Plating Baths, Clarence R. Hanus

Bachelors’ Theses

Chromium is one of the hardest metals and when properly plated gives a beautiful lustre. It has a fine resistance to oxidizing agents and does not tarnish up to 600°C. Oxygen has little effect on chromium plate, making the latter invaluable for embellishments and decorative purposes.

However, there are difficulties to be overcome in chromium plating, such as,

  1. Poor throwing power.
  2. Formation of trivalent chromium.
  3. Evolution of hydrogen at the cathode.

It has been found that current efficiency is low, resulting in low throwing power, uneven plating and waste of electric energy.

In this thesis it will be attempted to …

The Problem Of The Trisection Of The Angle, Ruth O'Brien May 1932

The Problem Of The Trisection Of The Angle, Ruth O'Brien

Bachelors’ Theses

The great problem of the trisection of the angle dates back to the rise of the Sophist School about 480 B.C. The Sophist School was one of six Greek mathematical schools which included the Iconic, Pythagorean, Platonic, First Alexandrian and Second Alexandrian Schools. The periods of their existence overlapped considerably. thus, for example, Pythagorean activity continued during the time of the Sophists until the opening of the Platonic School. The rise of the Sophists to prominence came as a result of certain social and political conditions of the time.

Photometry, Arthur G. Barkow May 1932

Photometry, Arthur G. Barkow

Bachelors’ Theses

The preparation of this paper was not undertaken primarily with a view of discussing all types of photometer, but mostly for the investigation of the Ritchie Wedge. As for the first part, the history or resume is brief and somewhat incomplete. In the ensuing pages, no reference is given to the portable photometer, so helpful to illuminating engineers. This was not deemed necessary since the principle involved is similar to those discussed.

The Electret - An Effort To Find The Cause Of Its Permanent Polarization, Ernest F. Lundeen Jan 1932

The Electret - An Effort To Find The Cause Of Its Permanent Polarization, Ernest F. Lundeen

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Certain waxes when solidified in a strong electric field exhibit unusual electrical properties. Several days after formation there is a polarization in the direction of the field which seems to persist for an indefinite length of time. The surface that was in contact with the anode during formation first ass a negative charge and then obtains a positive charge, which under proper conditions is practically permanent. The surface that was in contact with the cathode first has a positive charge and then obtains a negative charge which is the permanent charge.

Dielectric Constant Of Absorbed Water, Reiji Funabiki Jan 1932

Dielectric Constant Of Absorbed Water, Reiji Funabiki

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

That the dielectric constant of a substance is one of its important properties is a fact that has been very commonly taken into consideration by electrical engineers in design of apparatus and transmission lines. The importance of the dielectric constant is equally evident to the chemist working in the field of nonaqueous solutions, and Walden and others have spent a great deal of time and energy in attempting to measure the relationship of the dielectric constant of a solvent to its solvent ability, the degree of ionization of a solute dissolved in it, etc. Indeed it has become very common …

A Study Of The Colloid Obtained From Weathered Lignite, Cecil O. Lohn Jan 1932

A Study Of The Colloid Obtained From Weathered Lignite, Cecil O. Lohn

Theses and Dissertations

When Lignite is exposed to the action of weather it undergoes various changes, probably due to oxidation. Surface beds of lignite are often rejected by the miners as inferior coal, due to the weathered condition. But when this weathered lignite is treated with sodium hydroxide, and the resulting solution allowed to evaporate to dryness, there is left a hard, shiny substance very similar in appearance to hard coal. This dried product has been exploited under the name of Dakolite. When dispersed in water this product makes a very good wood stain.

Tests made on Dakolite show that it has colloidal …

Preliminary Construction Of A Photo-Electric Cell Concentrator, Stanley S. Williams Jun 1931

Preliminary Construction Of A Photo-Electric Cell Concentrator, Stanley S. Williams

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The separation of the valuable portion from the waste portion of an ore is an individual problem for every ore. However, the various methods for accomplishing this end, more or less classify themselves by the physical properties of the constituents of the ore. Most of the properties of minerals have been utilized in some way or other to affect the separation of the valuable from the invaluable parts. Practically nothing has been done so far with color and luster to attain this purpose.

It is believed that the photo—electric cell could also be used in concentrating a certain class of …
