Superconducting Phase Transition In Inhomogeneous Chains Of Superconducting Islands, Eduard Ilin, Irina Burkova, Xiangyu Song, Michael Pak, Dmitri S. Golubev, Alexey Bezryadin

We study one-dimensional chains of superconducting islands with a particular emphasis on the regime in which every second island is switched into its normal state, thus forming a superconductor-insulator-normal metal (S-I-N) repetition pattern. As is known since Giaever tunneling experiments, tunneling charge transport between a superconductor and a normal metal becomes exponentially suppressed, and zero-bias resistance diverges, as the temperature is reduced and the energy gap of the superconductor grows larger than the thermal energy. Here we demonstrate that this physical phenomenon strongly impacts transport properties of inhomogeneous superconductors made of weakly coupled islands with fluctuating values of the critical …

Solving Complex Eigenvalue Problems On A Quantum Annealer With Applications To Quantum Scattering Resonances, Alexander Teplukhin, Brian K. Kendrick, Dmitri Babikov
Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications
Quantum computing is a new and rapidly evolving paradigm for solving chemistry problems. In previous work, we developed the Quantum Annealer Eigensolver (QAE) and applied it to the calculation of the vibrational spectrum of a molecule on the D-Wave quantum annealer. However, the original QAE methodology was applicable to real symmetric matrices only. For many physics and chemistry problems, the diagonalization of complex matrices is required. For example, the calculation of quantum scattering resonances can be formulated as a complex eigenvalue problem where the real part of the eigenvalue is the resonance energy and the imaginary part is proportional to …
Synthesis Of Stable Organic Radical Homo- And Co-Polymers And Their Applications In Solid-State Devices, Michael Anghel
Synthesis Of Stable Organic Radical Homo- And Co-Polymers And Their Applications In Solid-State Devices, Michael Anghel
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This thesis outlines the synthesis and characterization of a stable organic radical homopolymer incorporating nitronyl nitroxide radicals, as well as the synthesis and characterization of random and block co-polymers incorporating nitronyl nitroxide and 6-oxoverdazyl radicals.
The nitronyl nitroxide homopolymer was synthesized using ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP), yielding polymers with controlled molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distributions. Studies of polymer growth as a function of time and monomer:catalyst ratio revealed the ROMP to be well-behaved. Spectroscopic analysis of the polymer showed that the radicals possessed high radical content, indicating that they are tolerated by ROMP. Conductivity studies of thin-films made …

Premise of research. Epiphytic bromeliads endure intense seasonal environmental changes in the canopy of dry tropical deciduous forests. The analysis of the physiological responses of these epiphytes to environmental changes can be useful in assessing their plasticity, vulnerability, and adaptations to such extreme habitats.
Methodology. We measured microenvironmental variables and water relations for plants of the epiphytic bromeliad Tillandsia brachycaulos in three microhabitats within the canopy of a dry tropical forest. We measured individual plants for seasonal and spatial differences in light, leaf temperature, osmotic potential, cell wall elasticity, and relative capacitance as indications of their physiological responses …

Modeling The Influence Of Public Risk Perceptions On The Adoption Of Green Stormwater Infrastructure: An Application Of Bayesian Belief Networks Versus Logistic Regressions On A Statewide Survey Of Households In Vermont, Qing Ren, Asim Zia, Donna M. Rizzo, Nancy Mathews
College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences Faculty Publications
There is growing environmental psychology and behavior literature with mixed empirical evidence about the influence of public risk perceptions on the adoption of environmentally friendly “green behaviors”. Adoption of stormwater green infrastructure on residential properties, while costlier in the short term compared to conventional greywater infrastructure, plays an important role in the reduction of nutrient loading from non-point sources into freshwater rivers and lakes. In this study, we use Bayesian Belief Networks (BBNs) to analyze a 2015 survey dataset (sample size = 472 respondents) about the adoption of green infrastructure (GSI) in Vermont’s residential areas, most of which are located …

Catchment nutrient export, especially during high flow events, can influence ecological processes in receiving waters by altering nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentrations and relative amounts (stoichiometry). Event-scale N and P export dynamics may be significantly altered by land use/land cover (LULC) and season. Consequently, to manage water resources, it is important to understand how LULC and season interact to influence event N and P export. In situ, high-frequency spectrophotometers allowed us to continuously and concurrently monitor nitrate (NO3−) and soluble reactive P (SRP) concentrations and therefore examine event-scale NO3− and SRP export dynamics. Here we analyzed event NO3− and …

Developing A Portable, Smartphone-Based Schlieren Imaging System, Grace Riermann, Keith R. Stein
Honors Student Works
Schlieren imaging is a technique for visualizing fluid flows that are characterized by spatial variations in density or refractive index. Because schlieren imaging is commonly performed with expensive equipment in a lab setting, we sought cost efficiency, accessibility, and ease of fabrication by designing a portable, smartphone-based system.

Annual Student Research Poster Session
Predicting small molecule potency against a target receptor is critically important in the drug discovery process. By evaluating literature and associated GitHub repositories, we developed a deep learning model based on 3-D molecule and protein structure information to generate new small molecules and predict their binding affinity with protein receptors.

While a dot plot of one variable is naturally extended to a scatter plot of two variables, how should a box plot of one variable be extended to two variables? We propose a shutter plot that depicts the means and the standard deviations of both variables, the two regression lines and the coefficients of correlation and determination over a scatter plot. By showing all relevant summary statistics simultaneously, a shutter plot captures all aspects of a linear relationship, including flagging potential outliers, and helps the readers make good decisions.
