Introduction To Special Section: Mechanical Involvement Of Fluids In Faulting, Stephen Hickman, Richard Sibson, Ronald Bruhn Jan 1995

Introduction To Special Section: Mechanical Involvement Of Fluids In Faulting, Stephen Hickman, Richard Sibson, Ronald Bruhn

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

A growing body of evidence suggests that fluids are intimately linked to a variety of faulting processes. These include the long-term structural and compositional evolution of fault zones; fault creep; and the nucleation, propagation, arrest, and recurrence of earthquake ruptures. Besides the widely recognized physical role of fluid pressures in controlling the strength of crustal fault zones, it is also apparent that fluids can exert mechanical influence through a variety of chemical effects.

The United States Geological Survey sponsored a Conference on the Mechanical Effects of Fluids in Faulting under the auspices of the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program at …

Birds Of The Platte, Eileen M. Kirsch Jan 1995

Birds Of The Platte, Eileen M. Kirsch

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Gary Lingle has done an outstanding job compiling information to make birding the Central Platte River and Rainwater Basin area of Nebraska easier and more rewarding. The book was not designed to replace a field guide. Rather, it provides maps, general information about the area, when and where birds can be seen, and likelihood of viewing each of 300 bird species possible. Sprinkled throughout the book are drawings by William S. Whitney and Ernest V. Ochsner that depict the structural simplicity of the prairie and the diversity of its wildlife. The writing style is personal and unpretentious, and the text …

Recent State Of Stress Change In The Walker Lane Zone, Western Basin And Range Province, United States, Oliver Bellier, Mary Lou Zoback

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The NW to north-trending Walker Lane zone (WLZ) is located along the western boundary of the northern Basin and Range province with the Sierra Nevada. This zone is distinguished from the surrounding Basin and Range province on the basis of irregular topography and evidence for both normal and strike-slip Holocene faulting. Inversion of slip vectors from active faults, historic fault offsets, and earthquake focal mechanisms indicate two distinct Quaternary stress regimes within the WLZ, both of which are characterized by a consistent WNW σ3 axis; these are a normal faulting regime with a mean σ3 axis of N85 °+ …

The A-dependence of the quasielastic A(e, ef'p) reaction has been studied at SLAC with 2H, C, Fe, and Au nuclei at momentum transfers Q2 = 1, 3, 5, and 6.8 (GeV/c)2. We extract the nuclear transparency T(A, Q2), a measure of the average probability that the struck proton escapes from the nucleus A without interaction. Several calculations predict a significant increase in T with momentum transfer, a phenomenon known as Color Transparency. Within the measurement uncertainty, no increase is seen for any of the nuclei studied.

Cross sections are presented for the reaction 2H(e,e′p)n for momentum transfers in the range 1.2 ≤Q2≤ 6.8 (GeV/c)2 and for missing momenta from 0 to 250 MeV/c. The longitudinal-transverse interference structure function has been separated at Q2=1.2(GeV/c)2. The observables are compared to calculations performed in nonrelativistic and relativistic frameworks. The data are best described by a fully relativistic calculation.

The Programmers' Playground is a software library and run-time system for creating distributed multimedia applications from collections of reusable software moduels. This paper presents the design and implementation of EUPHORIA, Playground's user interface management system. Implemented as a Playground module, EUPHORIA allows end-users to create direct manipulation graphical user interfaces (GUIs) exclusively through the use of a graphics editor. No programming is required. At run-time, attributes of the GUI state can be exposed and connected to external Playground modules, allowing the user to vosualize and directly manipulate state information in remote Playground modules. Features of EUPHORIA include real-time direct manipulation …

Stalks of isocrinid crinoids are differentiated into cirri-bearing columnals (nodals) and columnals lacking cirri (internodals). This skeletal differentiation allowed us to test whether stalk fragmentation is random or whether it occurs preferentially at a specific articulation. Our analyses indicate that the patterns of fragmentation in multicolumnal segments of extant isocrinids collected by submersible, by dredging, and in sediment samples, as well as those found as fossils, are nonrandom. The preferred plane of fragmentation corresponds to the synostosis, the articulation between a nodal and the internodal distal to it. In isocrinids this articulation has a characteristic morphology and is the site …

A Consistent Boltzmann Algorithm, Alejandro Garcia, F. Alexander, B. Alder Jan 1995

A Consistent Boltzmann Algorithm, Alejandro Garcia, F. Alexander, B. Alder

Alejandro Garcia

The direct simulation Monte Carlo method for the Boltzmann equation is modified by an additional displacement in the advection process and an enhanced collision rate in order to obtain the exact hard sphere equation of state at all densities. This leads to consistent thermodynamic and transport properties in the low density (Boltzmann) regime. At higher densities transport properties are comparable to the predictions of the Enskog model. The algorithm is faster than molecular dynamics at low and moderate densities and readily run on a parallel architecture

A Note On Reordering Ordered Topological Spaces And The Existence Of Continuous, Strictly Increasing Functions, Joe Mashburn Jan 1995

A Note On Reordering Ordered Topological Spaces And The Existence Of Continuous, Strictly Increasing Functions, Joe Mashburn

Mathematics Faculty Publications

The origin of this paper is in a question that was asked of the author by Michael Wellman, a computer scientist who works in artificial intelligence at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. He wanted to know if, starting with Rn and its usual topology and product partial order, he could linearly reorder every finite subset and still obtain a continuous function from Rn into R that was strictly increasing with respect to the new order imposed on Rn. It is the purpose of this paper to explore the structural characteristics of ordered topological spaces …

Galois Module Structure Of Ideals In Wildly Ramified Cyclic Extensions Of Degree P2, Gove Griffith Elder Jan 1995

Galois Module Structure Of Ideals In Wildly Ramified Cyclic Extensions Of Degree P2, Gove Griffith Elder

Mathematics Faculty Publications

For L/K, any totally ramified cyclic extension of degree p2 of local fields which are finite extensions of the field of p-adic numbers, we describe the Zp[Gal(L/K)]-module structure of each fractional ideal of L explicitly in terms of the 4p+1 indecomposable Zp[Gal(L/K)]-modules classified by Heller and Reiner. The exponents are determined only by the invariants of ramification.

In the following H will denote a separable, infinite-dimensional, complex Hilbert space. The term operator will always mean linear, bounded operator on H. By invariant subspace we mean closed, invariant linear manifold. For a given operator T, the set of all invariant subspaces of T will be denoted LatT, since obviously it is a lattice. The set of all operators commuting with T is denoted {T}'. A subspace will be called hyperinvariant for T if it is invariant under any operator in {T}'.

Information Security Issues In Mobile Computing, Thomas Hardjono, Jennifer Seberry

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

During the last decade the decrease in the size of computing machinery, coupled with the increase in their computing power has lend to the development of the concept of mobile computing. Effects of this new vision is currently evident in the flourishing numbers of mobile telephones and portable computing units. In this paper we investigate some issues concerning the security of mobile computing systems, within the framework of the categories of mobility, disconnection, data access modes and scale of operation (Imielinski & Badrinath, 1993). In contrast to previous works which concentrate on security in wireless communications, we focus on the …

Relationship Among Nonlinearity Criteria, Jennifer Seberry, Xian-Mo Zhang, Yuliang Zheng

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

An important question in designing cryptographic functions including substitution boxes (S-boxes) is the relationships among the various nonlinearity criteria each of which indicates the strength or weakness of a cryptographic function against a particular type of cryptanalytic attack. In this paper we reveal, for the first time, interesting connections among the strict avalanche characteristics, differential characteristics, linear structures and nonlinearity of quadratic (S-boxes). In addition, we show that our proof techniques allow us to treat in a unified fashion all quadratic permutations (namely, quadratic (S-boxes that form permutations), regardless of the underlying construction methods. This greatly simplifies the proofs for …

New Normal Sequences Of Length 25, Marc Gysin, Jennifer Seberry

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

An introduction to binary sequences, combinatorial designs and how they are related to communication theory and computer security is given. An exhaustive search algorithm for normal sequences is presented. This is the first time that the lengths n = 24 and n = 25 have been searched through completely. No sequences of length 24 are found. It turns out that all the normal sequences of length 25 can be derived from Turyn sequences. This construction is subject to a new theorem that is given here.

Posterior Convergence Given The Mean, Bertrand S. Clarke, J. K. Ghosh Jan 1995

Posterior Convergence Given The Mean, Bertrand S. Clarke, J. K. Ghosh

Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications

For various applications one wants to know the asymptotic behavior of w(θ | X), the posterior density of a parameter θ given the mean X of the data rather than the full data set. Here we show that w(θ | X) is asymptotically normal in an L1 sense, and we identify the mean of the limiting normal and its asymptotic variance. The main results are first proved assuming that X1,...,Xn,... are independent and identical; suitable modifications to obtain results for the nonidentical case are given sepa- rately. Our results may be used to …

Dissociation Quotient Of Benzoic Acid In Aqueous Sodium Chloride Media To 250°C, Richard Kettler, David J. Wesolowski, Donald A. Palmer Jan 1995

Dissociation Quotient Of Benzoic Acid In Aqueous Sodium Chloride Media To 250°C, Richard Kettler, David J. Wesolowski, Donald A. Palmer

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The dissociation quotient of benzoic acid was determined potentiometrically in a concentration cell fitted with hydrogen electrodes. The hydrogen ion molality of benzoic acid/benzoate solutions was measured relative to a standard aqueous IiCI solution at seven temperatures from 5 to 250°C and at seven ionic strengths ranging from 0.1 to 5.0 molal (NaCI). The molal dissociation quotients and selected literature data were fitted in the isocoulombic (all anionic) form by a six-term equation. This treatment yielded the following thermodynamic quantities for the acid dissociation equilibrium at 25°C and 1 bar: log Ka = -4.206±0.006, ΔH=0.3±0.3 kJ-mol-1 …

Dissociation Quotients Of Succinic Acid In Aqueous Sodium Chloride Media To 225°C, Richard Kettler, Donald A. Palmer, David J. Wesolowski

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The first and second molal dissociation quotients of succinic acid were measured potentiometrically with a hydrogen-electrode, concentration cell. These measurements were carried out from 0 to 225"C over 25 ° intervals at five ionic strengths ranging from 0.1 to 5.0 molal (NaCl). The dissociation quotients from this and two other studies were combined and treated with empirical equations to yield the following thermodynamic quantities for the first acid dissociation equilibrium at 25°C: logK1a = -4.210±0.003; Δ H1̊a = 2.9±0.2 kJ-mol - 1 ; ΔS1̊a = -71±1 J-mol - 1 -K -1; and ΔCp̊,1a = -98±3 …

Conceptual Basis For An Index Of Forest Integrity For Upland Coastal Plain Ecosystems, Nicholas R. Brown, Brian Roy Lockhart, Philip A. Tappe, Lynne C. Thompson, Robert C. Weih Jr., Richard A. Williams

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Following the recent trend to manage natural resources for "sustainability," ecologists, resource managers and policymakers are beginning to think of the management of forest ecosystems in terms of "ecosystem health" or "ecosystem integrity." Biologists are increasingly recognizing that use of chemical assays in assessing the condition of an ecosystem has limited value, and that biological factors, e.g., species diversity and composition, can be useful characters in the analysis of "biotic integrity." An index of biotic integrity (IBI) has been developed for riverine ecosystems in the Midwest U.S., using fish species diversity, indicator population analysis, trophic structure assessment, and physiological abnormalities …

Biometric Imaging: Three Dimensional Imaging Of The Human Hand Using Coded Structured Lighting, T. A. Vuori, C. L. Smith

Research outputs pre 2011

In this report the results of applying a three dimensional range imaging system, based on coded structured light, are presented. This includes a description of a new improved spatial coding scheme. This new scheme increases the number of reference points available and provides a basis for more accurate calculation of their location. A detailed description of the image processing methods used to extract structural information and to identify structural objects from the camera image are given. In addition the method used to calculate the locations of reference points with 'subpixel' accuracy is described. Finally, the results of experiments with synthesised …

An Ada-Like Language To Facilitate Reliable Coding Of Low Cost Embedded Systems, Michael Collins Jan 1995

An Ada-Like Language To Facilitate Reliable Coding Of Low Cost Embedded Systems, Michael Collins

Theses : Honours

Due to a lack of operating system (0/S) support, it is more difficult to develop programs for embedded systems than for workstations. For those developing on a low budget, the problem is often further compounded by the necessity of using inappropriate, 0/S dependent, compilers. This study attempts to ascertain those elements of a High Level Language (HLL) which are absolutely necessary and implementable to produce reliable, efficient, embedded programs without the benefit of a large budget. The study is based upon the Ada philosophy as the Ada language incorporates many desirable features for modelling real-world problems in terms of embedded …

Calcium Carbonate Sedimentation In The Global Ocean: Linkages Between The Neritic And Pelagic Environments, John D. Milliman, Andre W. Droxler Jan 1995

Calcium Carbonate Sedimentation In The Global Ocean: Linkages Between The Neritic And Pelagic Environments, John D. Milliman, Andre W. Droxler

VIMS Articles

Other than fluvial sediment, calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is the greatest source of sediment in the present-day ocean. Interest in carbonate sedimentation extends beyond geologists because the carbonate system involves biologic and geochemical
processes. Carbonate production, for example, releases CO2 but its accumulation becomes a major sink for inorganic carbon.

Unlike fluvial sediments, modern carbonates accumulate more or less equally in the neritic and pelagic environments. Neritic carbonates (benthic) are characterized by rapid production of (mostly) metastable aragonite and magnesian calcite:pelagic production of (primarily) calcite in the open ocean occurs at much slower rates but overmuch larger areas than does neritic …

Maintaining High Throughput During Overload In Atm Switches, Jonathan S. Turner

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

This report analyzes two popular heuristics for ensuring packet integrity in ATM switching systems. In particular, we analyze the behavior of packet tail discarding, in order to understand how the packet level link efficiency is dependent on the rates of individual virtual circuits and the degre of the imposed overload. In addition, we study early packet discard and show that the queue capacity needed to achieve high efficiency under worst-case conditions grows with the number of virtual circuits and we determine the efficiency obtainable with more limited queue capacities. Using the insights from these analyses, extensions to early packet discard …

Real-Time Upcalls: A Mechanism To Provide Real-Time Processing Guarantees, Raman Gopalakrishna, Guru M. Parulkar

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Real-time upcalls (RTUs) are an operating systems mechanism that can be used by applications to efficiently schedule code segments (or handlers) that must execute periodically. While the mechanism was conceibed to support protocol processing with quality-of-service guarantees for networked multimedia applicatoins it is general enough to be applicable in other domains like real-time image processing. Until now real-time threads have been the only mechanism for implementing protocols in user space with QoS guarantees. The RTU mechanism avoids the implementation complexity of the thread based approach while retaining its ability to ensure real-time behavior. In addition, our design simplifies protocol code, …

Can Declared Strategy Voting Be An Effective Instrument For Group Decision-Making?, Lorrie Faith Cranor

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

The goal of this research is to determine whether declared strategy voting can be an effective tool for group decision-making. Declared strategy voting is a novel group decision-making procedure in which preference is specified using voting strategies - first-order mathematical functions that specify a choice in terms of zero or more parameters. This research will focus on refining the declared strategy voting concept, developing an accessible implementation of declared strategy voting that can be used for mock elections, assessing the potential impacts of declared strategy voting, and evaluating the effectiveness of declared strategy voting for group decision-making. This proposal describes …

Error Control For Continuous Media And Multipoint Applications, Christos Papadopoulos, Guru Parulkar

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

High-bandwidth multimedia applications pose new challenges to error control. These include the support of error control for Continuous Media (CM) streams and the scalable support of error control in multipoint applications where the number of participants is large. Current error control mechanisms provide no support for the above applications. In this report we present new error control mechanisms that provide the required support. Continuous media applications have strict timing requirements which greatly affect recovery. To support continuous media applications we have designed and implemented a point-to-point error control mechanism which features the following: (1) selective repeat retransmission, (2) conditional retransmission, …
