Latin Squares: Critical Sets And Their Lower Bounds, Diane Donovan, Joan Cooper, D. J. Nott, Jennifer Seberry

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

In this paper we establish a number of new lower bounds on the size of a critical set in a latin square. In order to do this we first give two results which give critical sets for isotopic latin squares and conjugate latin squares. We then use these results to increase the known lower bound for specific classes of critical sets. Finally, we take a detailed look at a number of latin squares of small order. In some cases, we achieve an exact lower bound for the size of the minimal critical set.

Nonlinearity And Propagation Characteristics Of Balanced Boolean Functions, Jennifer Seberry, Xian-Mo Zhang, Yuliang Zheng

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

Three important criteria for cryptographically strong Boolean functions are balance, nonlinearity, and the propogation criterion. The main contributions of this paper are to reveal a number of interesting properties of balance and nonlinearity, and to study systematic methods for contructing Boolean functions that satisfy some or all of the three criteria. We show that concatenating, splitting, modifying, and multiplying (in the sense of Kronecker) sequences can yield balanced Boolean functions with a very high nonlinearity. In particular, we show that balanced Boolean functions obtained by modifying and multiplying sequences achieve a nonlinearity higher than that attainable by any previously known …

The Relationship Between Propagation Characteristic And Nonlinearity Of Cryptographic Functions, Jennifer Seberry, Xian-Mo Zhang, Yuliang Zheng

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

The connections among the various nonlinearity criteria is currently an important topic in the area of designing and analyzing cryptographic function. In this paper we show a quantitative relationship between propagation characteristics and nonlinearity, two critical indicators of the cryptographic strength of a Boolean function. We also present a tight lower bound on the nonlinearity of a cryptographic function that has propagation characteristics.

Applications Of Smartcards For Anonymous And Verifiable Databases, Thomas Hardjono, Jennifer Seberry Jan 1995

Applications Of Smartcards For Anonymous And Verifiable Databases, Thomas Hardjono, Jennifer Seberry

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

In this paper we describe a practical solution towards anonymous and verifiable databases based on the use of smartcards and the recent Improved Leighton-Micali protocol for the distribution of keys. The scheme is addressed particularly to public data held in separate government databases with the aim of preventing unauthorized government institutions from gathering and merging private data concerning individuals from these separate containers. The solution can be realized through the recent Clipper Chip and smartcard technology, and its security relies on the strength of these technologies. The scheme is also extendible to mobile computing environments.

The Weighing Matrices Of Order 4n And Weight 4n-2 And 2n-1, Marc Gysin, Jennifer Seberry Jan 1995

The Weighing Matrices Of Order 4n And Weight 4n-2 And 2n-1, Marc Gysin, Jennifer Seberry

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

We give algorithms and constructions for mathematical and computer searches which allow us to establish the existence of W(4n, 4n - 2) and W (4n, 2n - 1) for many orders 4n less than 4000. We compare these results with the orders for which W(4n, 4n) and W(4n, 2n) are known. We use new algorithms based on the theory of cyclotomy to obtain new T-matrices of order 43 and JM-matrices which yield W(4n, 4n - 2) for n = 5,7,9,11,13,17,19,25,31,37,41,43,61,71,73,157.

Information Security In Mobile Databases, Thomas Hardjono, Jennifer Seberry

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

During the last decade the decrease in the size of computing machinery, coupled with the increase in their computing power have lend to the development of the concept of mobile computing. Effects of this new vision can be seen currently in the flourishing numbers of mobile telephones and portable computing units. In the current work we investigate some issues concerning the security of databases and database systems in the mobile computing environment. We present a scheme for end-to-end secure data transfer between one mobile computing element to another based on a recent protocol for key distribution. Secure data transfer is …

Hybrid Predictive/Vq Lossless Image Coding, P O. Ogunbona, Jianli Wang, Golshah Naghdy

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

A multiplicative autoregressive model is used in a lossless predictive image coding scheme. The use of vector quantisation (VQ) for compression of the model coefficients leads to an improved compression ratio. Both image adaptive and universal codebooks are considered. A comparative analysis of the new coder is presented through simulation results.

New Feature-Based Image Adaptive Vector Quantisation Coder, Jamshid Shanbehzadeh, Philip O. Ogunbona

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

It is difficult to achieve a good low bit rate image compression performance with traditional block coding schemes such as transform coding and vector quantization, without regard for the human visual perception or signal dependency. These classical block coding schemes are based on minimizing the MSE at a certain rate. This procedure results in more bits being allocated to areas which may not be visually important and the resulting quantization noise manifests as a blocking artifact. Blocking artifacts are known to be psychologically more annoying than white noise when the human visual response is considered. While image adaptive vector quantization …

Effect Of Organic Solvents On The Separation Of Benzoic Acids By Capillary Electrophoresis, Young J. Lee, William E. Price, Margaret Sheil Jan 1995

Effect Of Organic Solvents On The Separation Of Benzoic Acids By Capillary Electrophoresis, Young J. Lee, William E. Price, Margaret Sheil

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

The effect of organic modifiers on the separation of a number of closely related isomeric benzoic acids by capillary electrophoresis is described. It is shown that while a single modifier concentration cannot help resolve the entire electropherogram, organic modifiers do significantly enhance the resolution of parts of the separation system by comparison with 40 mmol l-1 phosphate buffer. The effects on separation and retention times are discussed in terms of the effects on electroosmotic flow and the electrophoretic mobilities of the charged solutes. The effects were found to be modifier specific, although the trends were in the same direction (ie., …

Characterization Of Piezoceramic Crosses With Large Range Scanning Capability And Applications For Low Temperature Scanning Tunneling Microscopy, J. A. Helfrich, Shireen Adenwalla, J. B. Ketterson, G. A. Zhitomirsky Jan 1995

Characterization Of Piezoceramic Crosses With Large Range Scanning Capability And Applications For Low Temperature Scanning Tunneling Microscopy, J. A. Helfrich, Shireen Adenwalla, J. B. Ketterson, G. A. Zhitomirsky

Shireen Adenwalla Papers

We have developed a large amplitude piezoceramic scanner which should have numerous applications. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and other scanning probe microscopies predominantly use piezoceramics for the scanning elements. Similarly adaptive optics, high resolution lithography, and micromanipulators are other examples of research which regularly utilize piezoceramic scanners. We present a new geometry for a piezoceramic scanner which allows for both high resolution (~nanometers) and large amplitude (~400 µm) displacements. The cross-shaped geometry makes it possible to produce extremely long pieces with very high tolerances. We have shown its effectiveness by using it as the major component of a low temperature …

Smooth Densities For Degenerate Stochastic Delay Equations With Hereditary Drift, Denis R. Bell, Salah-Eldin A. Mohammed

Articles and Preprints

We establish the existence of smooth densities for solutions of Rd-valued stochastic hereditary differential systems of the form

dx(t) = H(t,x)dt + g(t, x(t - r))dW(t).

In the above equation, W is an n-dimensional Wiener process, r is a positive time delay, H is a nonanticipating functional defined on the space of paths in Rd and g is an n x d matrix-valued function defined on [0, ∞) x Rd, such that gg* has …

Finiteness Of The Fixed Point Set For The Simple Genetic Algorithm, Alden H. Wright, Michael D. Vose Jan 1995

Finiteness Of The Fixed Point Set For The Simple Genetic Algorithm, Alden H. Wright, Michael D. Vose

Computer Science Faculty Publications

The infinite population simple genetic algorithm is a discrete dynamical system model of a genetic algorithm. It is conjectured that trajectories in the model always converge to fixed points. This paper shows that an arbitrarily small perturbation of the fitness will result in a model with a finite number of fixed points. Moreover, every sufficiently small perturbation of fimess preserves the finiteness of the fixed point set. These results allow proofs and constructions that require finiteness of the fixed point set. For example, applying the stable manifold theorem to a fixed point requires the hyperbolicity of the differential of the …

Preliminary Map Of The Structure Of The Precambrian Surface In Eastern Kentucky, James A. Drahovzal, Martin C. Noger

Map and Chart--KGS

This preliminary interpretation of the Precambrian unconformity surface in eastern Kentucky is based on data available to the Kentucky Geological Survey (KGS) as of November 1994. In early 1995, additional data became available to the KGS. Subsequent work using the new data should result in a more complete interpretation of the area within the next several years.

The map illustrates the Rome Trough and associated structures of the Precambrian surface, and as such contributes to an understanding of the regional geology, geologic evolution, distribution of energy and mineral resources, and potential geologic hazards. While it cannot be considered a prospecting …

An Exploration Of Doubly Transitive Designs In Affine Space, Michelle Persons Jan 1995

An Exploration Of Doubly Transitive Designs In Affine Space, Michelle Persons

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

Through a combination of linear algebra, geometry, and algebraic structures, one can prove that certain families of geometric designs have groups of automorphisms that are doubly transitive. These geometric designs can be defined as edge colorings of complete graphs. Automorphisms of these geometric designs are permutations of the vertices of the graphs, which are also permutations of the colors of the edges such that given two edges of the same color, their images are also the same color. All cases considered are on the vector space Fn for a field F and the group of automorphisms is a subgroup of …

Relating United States Crop Land Use To Natural Resources And Climate Change, K. G. Hubbard, F. J. Flores-Mendoza Jan 1995

Relating United States Crop Land Use To Natural Resources And Climate Change, K. G. Hubbard, F. J. Flores-Mendoza

Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

Crop production depends not only on the yield but also on the area harvested. The yield response to climate change has been widely examined, but the sensitivity of crop land use to hypothetical climate change has not been examined directly. Crop land-use regression models for estimating crop area indices (CAIs) - the percent of land used for corn, soybean, wheat, and sorghum production - are presented. Inputs to the models include available water-holding capacity of the soil, percent of land available for rain-fed agricultural production, annual precipitation, and annual temperature. The total variance of CAI explained by the models ranged …

Dreissena Polymorpha In The Saginaw Bay, Lake Huron Ecosystem: Overview And Perspective, Thomas F. Nalepa, Gary L. Fahnenstiel

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

After the zebra mussel, Dreissena polymorpha, was first discovered in Lake St. Clair in 1988 and rapidly spread throughout the Great Lakes, broad ecological changes became apparent in regions where this species was most abundant. Previous investigations documented dramatic increases in water clarity (Hebert et al. 1991, Marsden et al. 1993, Leach 1993), declines in chlorophyll and phytoplankton abundances (Leach 1993, Nicholls and Hopkins 1993, Holland 1993), and changes in benthic invertebrate communities (Griffiths 1993, Dermott et al. 1993, Stewart and Haynes 1994). These studies were conducted in various regions and defined impacts on a specific ecosystem component. Taken …

Nutrient Changes In Saginaw Bay, Lake Huron, After The Establishment Of The Zebra Mussel (Dreissena Polymorpha), Thomas H. Johengen, Thomas F. Nalepa, Gary L. Fahnenstiel, Greg Goudy

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Concentrations of particulate and dissolved nutrients in Saginaw Bay, Lake Huron, were examined relative to zebra mussel colonization which occurred summer 1991. The magnitude and spatial pattern of changes indicate that mussels had a significant impact on nutrients in Saginaw Bay. Annual means for total suspended solids, particulate organic carbon, particulate phosphorus, and particulate silica in the inner bay were significantly lower in 1992 and 1993 (post-zebra mussel) than in 1991 (pre-zebra mussel). Annual means decreased from 11.5 mg L-1, 1.45 mg C L-1 (121 µM), 20.4 µg P L-1(0.66 µM), and 1.52 mg SiO …
