Sediment Production And Delivery In The Upper South Fork Nooksack River, Northwest Washington, 1940-1991, Jeffrey A. Kirtland
Sediment Production And Delivery In The Upper South Fork Nooksack River, Northwest Washington, 1940-1991, Jeffrey A. Kirtland
WWU Graduate School Collection
Identifying sources and timing of sediment production and delivery provides information useful to understanding the geomorphology of a forested mountainous watershed in the western Cascade Range of Washington State. Sediment production and delivery is studied by constructing a partial sediment budget for the upper South Fork of the Nooksack River drainage (South Fork drainage). The period of the partial sediment budget extends from 1940 through 1991 and encompasses the pre- and post-management history of the watershed.
Four major sediment production and delivery sources - landsliding, streambank erosion, sheet and rill erosion and road-related erosion - were identified in the South …

American Woodock Use Of A Nest Box, David L. Bergman, Joel M. Bergman
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
-Lombardo et al. (1989, Condor 91 :744-747) reviewed two hypotheses for the use of nest boxes by house sparrows Passer domesticus, European starlings Sturnus vulgaris, eastern bluebirds Sialia sialis, and great tits Passer major during the nonbreeding season: (1) roosting in nest cavities may be associated with nest-cavity selection during intense competition for a limited number of usable cavities, and (2) birds use cavities during the non breeding season to decrease the rate of heat loss. We were unable to locate any prior documentation of nest box use by American woodcock (Scolopax major), therefore we report on a new behavior …

Predator odors have potential as feeding repellents for mammalian herbivores, including Aplodontia rufa, the mountain beaver. However, the repellency of major chemical constituents of natural predator scents for this species has not been evaluated. In this study, the effects of several synthetic sulfur compounds from predator scents on feeding by mountain beavers were assessed and compared to the effects of coyote (Canis latrans) urine. Retrieval of food by mountain beavers from bowls scented with either coyote urine, diluted with water to different concentrations, synthetic components of predator scents, or control odorants was studied. The following synthetic compounds …

Effects Of Zebra Mussel (Dreissena Polymorpha) Colonization On Water Quality Parameters In Saginaw Bay, Lake Huron, Gary L. Fahnenstiel, Gregory A. Lang, Thomas F. Nalepa, Thomas H. Johengen
United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications
A large-scale study of Saginaw Bay was initiated in 1990 and continued through 1993 to examine the effects of the zebra mussel colonization which began in summerlfall 1991. Saginaw Bay responded quickly to the zebra mussel colonization, as fall 1991 values of chlorophyll were similar to 1992 and 1993 values. In inner Saginaw Bay, where most zebra mussels were found, chlorophyll, kPAR, and total phosphorus values decreased, and Secchi disk depth increased during the study period, regardless of the presence or absence of zebra mussels at a specific station. At outer bay control stations no significant differences were found for …

Physics: Faculty Publications and Other Works
We describe the bound state and scattering properties of a quantum mechanical particle in a scalar N-prong potential. Such a study is of special interest since these situations are intermediate between one and two dimensions. The energy levels for the special case of N identical prongs exhibit an alternating pattern of non-degeneracy and (N−1) fold degeneracy. It is shown that the techniques of supersymmetric quantum mechanics can be used to generate new solutions. Solutions for prongs of arbitrary lengths are developed. Discussions of tunneling in N-well potentials and of scattering for piecewise constant potentials are given. Since our treatment is …
Introduction To Monte Carlo Methods, Sue Ellen Mccloskey, Wilfred J. Braithwaite
Introduction To Monte Carlo Methods, Sue Ellen Mccloskey, Wilfred J. Braithwaite
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Monte Carlo computer programming is becoming increasingly popular to those who use it, due to the ease with which complex problems may be formulated and solved. However, the growth of MC programming for small projects is inhibited by a frequent misconception of difficulty, inferred from the high level of complexity of problems solved in High Energy and Nuclear Physics using MC methods. In addition, few students of science and engineering are receiving exposure to the basic issues involved in the Monte Carlo process despite the ease with which MC can be used to solve classical physics problems, especially those problems …

Using Geant To Model Calrimeter Response For Electromagnetic Cascades From Nucleus-Nucleus Interactions In A Cosmic Ray Detector, Kazuhiko Murai, Carlos A. Sanchez, Donald C. Wold
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Ascintillating optical fiber calorimeter (SOFCAL) is being developed by NASA/Marshall Space Flight Center for use in balloon-borne experiments to study the spectrum of high-energy cosmic rays and gamma rays. SOFCAL will not saturate for long exposures and the calorimeter willbe useful in emulsion chambers to study primary cosmic-ray nuclei with energies from 100 GeV to 1,000 TeV. The event generator FRITIOF was used to model the collision of a cosmic-ray projectile with a target nucleus inan emulsion chamber. The measurements of charged particles from the interaction in the emulsions are related to the energy of the primary cosmic ray nucleus-nucleus …

Studies On Processes Controlling The Input Of Agricultural Chemicals In Groundwater To Surface Waters, Edward Laurence Libelo
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
This dissertation describes several studies of groundwater quality, the fate and transport of nutrients and atrazine in groundwater systems and physical processes at the sediment-water interface which impact on groundwater discharge. Groundwater monitoring wells were installed at the Goodwins Island and Catlett Island NERRS sites in Virginia and agricultural, suburban and forest land use sites in the York and James River Basins. Groundwater was analyzed for nutrients, pH, salinity and trace organics. Shoreline land use, associated nutrient loading and an estimate of total groundwater flux suggest that groundwater contributes up to 30% of the total nitrogen input to the Chesapeake …

A total of 12,323 summer flounder were tagged and released in Chesapeake Bay, the coastal waters off Virginia Beach, and the Eastern Shore during 1987-89. Excluding immediate recaptures, a total of 675 were recaptured for an overall return rate of 5.5%. Returns from the commercial fishery (56.2%) outnumbered those from the recreational fishery (35.7%). The majority of returns (47.1%) came from either Virginia waters or areas to the south, while only 12.8% were from areas to the north of Virginia. offshore returns accounted for 8.5% of the total. Returns with insufficient location data made up the remaining 31.5%. of the …
