Geography and Geology Faculty Publications

The northeastern portion of the Idaho batholith (NIB) intruded Proterozoic rocks of the Belt-Purcell supergroup between SO and 90 Ma. Whole-rock Sm-Nd isotopic analyses of batholithic rocks yield depleted mantle model ages (T oM) between 1. 72 and 1.93 Ga and values of eNd between -17. 7 and - 21.2, similar to associated metamorphic rocks and within the range for Belt-Purcell sedimentary rocks. Premagmatic zircons from one sample of the NIB were analyzed individually using the SHRIMP ion microprobe and yielded a single age population at 1.74 Ga. This apparently single-aged source contrasts with the range of ages reported for …

Strontium Isotope Stratigraphy And Age Estimates For The Leisey Shell Pit Faunas, Hillsborough County, Florida, Douglas S. Jones, Paul A. Mueller, Teresa Acosta, Robert Duncan Shuster Jan 1995

Strontium Isotope Stratigraphy And Age Estimates For The Leisey Shell Pit Faunas, Hillsborough County, Florida, Douglas S. Jones, Paul A. Mueller, Teresa Acosta, Robert Duncan Shuster

Geography and Geology Faculty Publications

The vertebrate fauna of the Leisey Shell Pit near Tampa Bay, Florida, represents one of the more significant lrvingtonian mammalian faunas of North America. The fossil vertebrates occur in thin bone beds bounded above and below by massive shell beds containing a rich invertebrate ( chiefly molluscan) fauna. Debate has arisen concerning the precise age of the faunas at Leisey. Although generally agreed to be Pleistocene, estimates based upon vertebrate biostratigraphy suggest a somewhat older age than do estimates based upon molluscan biostratigraphy. To help resolve this controvefliy, 87Sr/86Sr ratios were determined on molluscan shells throughout the …

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Crystal structure, thermal expansion, oxygen stoichiometry, thermoelectricity, and electrical conductivity of compositions in the system La1 - xSrxCo0.2Fe0.8O3 with 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.6 were studied as function of temperature and Sr content, in air. The solubility of Sr in the sintered perovskite-type oxide (ABO3) was limited to x ≤ 0.4. The observed p-type electrical conduction appeared to occur via a small-polaron hopping mechanism. The thermally induced oxygen loss caused a lattice expansion plus decreases in both the carrier concentration and the carrier mobility. A semi-empirical model was developed which takes into account the thermally activated disproportionation of Co3+ ions …

Keeping Our Habitat Healthy: A Thematic Unit For Teaching Environmental Awareness For Grades 3-5, Pamela A. Shetler Jan 1995

Keeping Our Habitat Healthy: A Thematic Unit For Teaching Environmental Awareness For Grades 3-5, Pamela A. Shetler

Theses Digitization Project

There are many curriculum guides that address environmental education. Classroom teachers do not have the time to obtain and search all of these guides. This curriculum was developed by searching numerous manuals for appropriate lessons, developing a cohesive unit, and field testing the lessons on students in two classrooms. The project, as a whole, offers teachers a thematic, multi-disciplinary, hands-on, literature based method of developing students' appreciation and understanding of the world in which they live.

Stability And Resolution In Thermal Imaging, Lester Caudill, Kurt Bryan Jan 1995

Stability And Resolution In Thermal Imaging, Lester Caudill, Kurt Bryan

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

This paper examines an inverse problem which arises in thermal imaging. We investigate the problem of detecting and imaging corrosion in a material sample by applying a heat flux and measuring the induced temperature on the sample's exterior boundary. The goal is to identify the profile of some inaccessible portion of the boundary. We study the case in which one has data at every point on the boundary of the region, as well as the case in which only finitely many measurements are available. An inversion procedure is developed and used to study the stability of the inverse problem for …

Managing the rangelands is complex. Soils and vegetation can vary considerably over short distances in distinct or subtle ways. Separating climatic from management influences on the condition of the land has always been difficult. Whether we live on a sheep station, in a country town, in an Aboriginal community, a mining camp, or even if we only visit the Australian outback, it is vital that we understand and appreciate the unique character and management requirements of the rangelands. Learning to ‘read the rangeland’ has been a slow process, involving the knowledge and skills of pastoralists, Aboriginal people and scientists. This …

Seismic Stratigraphy Of The Eastern Equatorial Pacific Ocean: Paleoceanographic Implications, Stephen F. Bloomer, Larry A. Mayer, Ted C. Moore Jr Jan 1995

Seismic Stratigraphy Of The Eastern Equatorial Pacific Ocean: Paleoceanographic Implications, Stephen F. Bloomer, Larry A. Mayer, Ted C. Moore Jr

Affiliate Scholarship

The collection of Leg 138 well-log and shipboard physical-property data, in conjunction with high-resolution seismic profiles, provides an opportunity to understand the paleoceanographic significance of seismic reflectors and to gain insight into the paleoceanographic evolution of the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean. A series of eight reflectors or reflector packages were traced between two transects connecting five Leg 138 sites. By generating synthetic seismograms at each of these sites and comparing these to the field records, the origin of these seismic reflectors was determined in terms of physical-property variations and other core measurements. In particular, these reflectors were usually associated with …

1995, Spatial And Temporal Variability Of Late Neogene Equatorial Pacific Carbonate, T. K. Hagelberg, Nicklas G. Pisias, Larry A. Mayer, N. J. Shackleton, Alan C. Mix

Affiliate Scholarship

High-resolution, continuous records of GRAPE wet bulk density (a carbonate proxy) from Ocean Drilling Program Leg 138 provide one the opportunity for a detailed study of eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean carbonate sedimentation during the last 6 m.y. The transect of sites drilled spans both latitude and longitude in the eastern equatorial Pacific from 90° to 110°W and from 5°S to 10°N. Two modes of variability are resolved through the use of Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis. In the presence of large tectonic and climatic boundary condition changes over the last 6 m.y., the dominant mode of spatial variability in carbonate …

Paleoceanography Of The Eastern Equatorial Pacific During The Neogene: Synthesis Of Leg 138 Drilling Results, Nicklas G. Pisias, Larry A. Mayer, Alan C. Mix

Affiliate Scholarship

The primary objective of Leg 138 was to provide detailed information about the ocean's response to global climate change during the Neogene. Two north-south transects were drilled (95° and 110°W) within the region of equatorial divergence-driven upwelling (and thus high accumulation rates and resolution) and spanning the major equatorial ocean current boundaries (and thus recording a high-amplitude signal of the response of the sediment to climatically and/or tectonically driven changes in ocean circulation). The Neogene is marked by a number of well-known climatic and tectonic events (the closing of the Isthmus of Panama, the onset of North Atlantic Deep Water …

The Light Ion Pulsed Power Induction Accelerator For Etf, Ronald E. Olson, M. G. Mazarakis, C. L. Olson, D. L. Smith, L. F. Bennett

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The light ion Engineering Test Facility (ETF) driver concept, based on Hermes III and RHEPP technologies, is a scaled-down version of the LMF design incorporating repetition rate capabilities of up to 10 Hz. The preconceptual design presented here provides 250 TW peak power to the ETF target during 8 ns, equal to 2 MJ total ion beam energy. Linear inductive voltage addition driving a self-magnetically insulated transmission line (MITL) is utilized to generate the 36 MV peak voltage needed for lithium ion beams. The ~3 MA ion current is achieved by utilizing many accelerating modules in parallel. Since the current …

A Taxonomy Of Workgroup Computing Applications, Warren Von Worley Jan 1995

A Taxonomy Of Workgroup Computing Applications, Warren Von Worley

CCE Theses and Dissertations

The goal of workgroup computing is to help individuals and groups efficiently perform a wide range of functions on networked computer systems (Ellis, Gibbs, & Rein, 1991). Early workgroup computing tools were designed for limited functionality and group interaction (Craighill, 1992). Current workgroup computing applications do not allow enough control of group processes and they provide little correlation between various workgroup computing application areas (Rodden and Blair, 1991). An integrated common architecture may produce more effective workgroup computing applications. Integrating common support functions into a common framework will avoid duplication of these functions for each workgroup computing application (Pastor & …

Preparations Of Polycarbynes, Reuben D. Rieke

Chemistry Department: Faculty Publications

Polycarbynes prepared from a soluble source of electrons and an organic monomer or co-monomer containing at least one carbyne group in an ethereal, polyethereal, or hydrocarbon solvent are presented. A wide variety of arylcarbyne and/or alkylcarbyne monomers and co-monomers can be combined with a source of electrons soluble in an ethereal, polyethereal, or hydro-carbon solvent to form novel polycarbyne polymers. These polycarbyne polymers can be used to form synthetic diamond materials, fibers, and other materials that can withstand extreme conditions.

The Paleoecologic Significance Of Paleocene Palynomorph Assemblages From The Ludow, Slope, And Cannonball Formations, Southwestern North Dakota, Timothy J. Kroeger

Theses and Dissertations

Paleoenvironment exerted control on the distribution of 133 palynomorph taxa from the Ludlow and Slope Formations and Boyce and Three V Tongues of the Cannonball Formation (Fort Union Group, I Paleocene) of southwestern North Dakota. The strata represent fluvial deltaic systems that prograded eastward into the Cannonball Sea. Depositional environments include distributary channels, crevasse splays, crevasse-splay feeder channels, lignite-producing swamps and/or marshes, lakes, brackish to slightly brackish bays, lake and bay fills, and marshes

Paleoenvironmentally sensitive palynomorph taxa were identified by subjective examination of pollen diagrams and objective analysis using detrended correspondence analysis. Two paleoenvironmentally restricted palynomorph associations were recognized. …

In virtual Compton scattering an electron is scattered off a nucleon such that the nucleon emits a photon. We show that these events can be selected experimentally, and present the first evidence for virtual Compton scattering from the proton in data obtained at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The angular and energy dependence of the data is well described by a calculation that includes the coherent sum of electron and proton radiation.

Estimating Transition Probabilities From Aggregate Samples Augmented By Haphazard Recaptures, D. L. Hawkins, Jerome Eisenfeld, C. P. Han Jan 1995

Estimating Transition Probabilities From Aggregate Samples Augmented By Haphazard Recaptures, D. L. Hawkins, Jerome Eisenfeld, C. P. Han

Mathematics Technical Papers

Transition probabilities provide a convenient summary of changes in a categorical trait over time in a population. The difficulties of estimating such probabilities based on only aggregate data from repeated sampling are well known. We give here a method for augmenting aggregate data with haphazard recapture data, which can dramatically improve the estimation precision of transition probabilities. The method requires a rather high sampling fraction to provide sufficient numbers of recaptures. It is based on a generalized nonlinear least squares strategy which yields transition probability estimates preserving their natural parameter space, and which are asymptotically efficient. The asymptotic theory is …

Precision Measurement Of Relative Dipole Matrix Elements In Atomic Sodium, Rodney P. Meyer Jan 1995

Precision Measurement Of Relative Dipole Matrix Elements In Atomic Sodium, Rodney P. Meyer

Physics Theses & Dissertations

Relative dipole matrix elements are measured by means of a new spectroscopic technique called polarization interference spectroscopy. It is a two-color two-photon nonresonant process that maps the matrix elements into the energy domain by means of quantum mechanical interference. The technique measures the relative magnitude of the reduced matrix elements, particularly those involving excited states, to accuracies that are an order of magnitude better than previously available. Also, for the first time the relative phase of the reduced matrix elements is measured. The ratio of reduced matrix elements for the transitions 3s 2S1/2 →3P 2P3/2 →5s …

Hardware Assists For High Performance Computing Using A Mathematics Of Arrays, Hardy J. Pottinger, W. Eatherton, J. Kelly, T. Schiefelbein, Lenore Mullin, R. Ziegler

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Work in progress at the University of Missouri-Rolla on hardware assists for high performance computing is presented. This research consists of a novel field programmable gate array (FPGA) based reconfigurable coprocessor board (the Chameleon Coprocessor) being used to evaluate hardware architectures for speedup of array computation algorithms. These algorithms are developed using a Mathematics of Arrays (MOA). They provide a means to generate addresses for data transfers that require less data movement than more traditional algorithms. In this manner, the address generation algorithms are acting as an intelligent data prefetching mechanism or special purpose cache controller. Software implementations have been …
