Non-perturbatively generated effective potentials play an extremely useful and often critical role in string and inflationary model building. These potentials are typically computed by methods that assume the system is in equilibrium. For systems out of equilibrium, like an inflaton rolling down its potential, there are corrections to the semi-classical evolution due to transient phenomena. We provide a new qualitative and quantitative understanding of non-perturbative effects in real time for a wide class of toy quantum mechanical models. We derive an effective Schrödinger equation that does not rely on any notion of equilibrium and captures the low-energy dynamics supposedly described …

A Numerical Model Of The Global Carbon Cycle To Predict Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide Concentrations, Alexis Demitrios Kambis Jan 1995

A Numerical Model Of The Global Carbon Cycle To Predict Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide Concentrations, Alexis Demitrios Kambis

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

A numerical model of the global carbon cycle is presented which includes the effects of anthropogenic &CO\sb2& emissions &(CO\sb2& produced from fossil fuel combustion, biomass burning, and deforestation) on the global carbon cycle. The model is validated against measured atmospheric &CO\sb2& concentrations. Future levels of atmospheric &CO\sb2& are then predicted for the following scenarios: (1) Business as Usual (BaU) for the period 1990-2000; (2) Same as (1), but with no biomass burning; (3) Same as (1), but with no fossil fuel combustion; (4) Same as (1), but with a doubled atmospheric &CO\sb2& concentration and a 2 K warmer surface temperature …

Polyimides are a family of heterocyclic polymers that have received extensive evaluation as adhesives, fibers, films, moldings, composite matrices, insulators, coatings, membranes, and resists. their outstanding thermal stability, excellent mechanical and electrical properties, and chemical resistance make them attractive for many applications.;This research developed ether-containing polyimides for three applications: liquid crystalline polyimides as processing aids, polyimides for microelectronic applications, and polyimides for harsh environments. The approach consisted of three primary activities: (1) developed novel diether dianhydrides for polyimide fabrication, (2) designed, characterized, and evaluated polyimide architectures based on the material application requirements, and (3) provided extensive structure-property relationships utilizing a …

Young's Double-Slit Interferometry Within An Atom, Michael W. Noel, C. R. Stroud Jr. Jan 1995

Young's Double-Slit Interferometry Within An Atom, Michael W. Noel, C. R. Stroud Jr.

Physics Faculty Research and Scholarship

An experiment is described which is an analog of Young's double-slit interferometer using an atomic electron instead of light. Two phase-coherent laser pulses are used to excite a single electron into a state of the form of a pair of Rydberg wave packets that are initially on opposite sides of the orbit. The two wave packets propagate and spread until they completely overlap, then a third phase-coherent laser pulse probes the resulting fringe pattern. The relative phase of the two wave packets is varied so that the interference produces a single localized electron wave packet on one side of the …

Idea Analysis For The Development Of Clinical Trial Strategies, Roberta S. Horowitz Jan 1995

Idea Analysis For The Development Of Clinical Trial Strategies, Roberta S. Horowitz

CCE Theses and Dissertations

Idea Analysis was investigated to determine its ability to organize scientific information and explain the results of specialists' deliberations in designing new clinical trials. Ideas have long been recognized as the engine of creativity. By focusing on the capture of ideas from the scientific literature, idea analysis procedures enable the arrangement of the information into forms consistent with those developed by subject specialists. The most obvious example is the concept structure. Ideas containing a common frequently occurring term/phrase can be depicted as a primary node in the concept network. Related terms will appear as elements associated with that node. Ideas …

Large-Scale Client/Server Migration Methodology, A. Steven Krantz Jan 1995

Large-Scale Client/Server Migration Methodology, A. Steven Krantz

CCE Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation is to explain how to migrate a medium-sized or large company to client/server computing. It draws heavily on the recent IBM Boca Raton migration experience. The client/server computing model is introduced and related, by a Business Reengineering Model, to the major trends that are affecting most businesses today, including business process reengineering, empowered teams, and quality management. A recommended information technology strategy is presented. A business case development approach, necessary to justify the large expenditures required for a client/server migration, is discussed. A five-phase migration management methodology is presented to explain how a business can …

Paleokarst Of The Bohemian Massif In The Czech Republic: An Overview And Synthesis, Pavel Bosàk Jan 1995

Paleokarst Of The Bohemian Massif In The Czech Republic: An Overview And Synthesis, Pavel Bosàk

International Journal of Speleology

Paleokarst of the Bohemian Massif on the territory of the Czech Republic developed as polygenetic and polycyclic forms with several phases of fossilization and rejuvenation depending on tectonic phases and deep chemical weathering. Paleotectonic period (pre-Permian in general) was characterized by evolution of relatively minor depositional and local paleokarsts. Neotectonic (platform) period (post-Permian) favoured the prolonged karst evolution of interregional paleokarst in two karst periods and several more or less distinctly separated karst phases.

Electrical Characterization Of The (La,Ca) (Cr,Co)O3 System, S. R. Sehlin, Harlan U. Anderson, Don M. Sparlin Jan 1995

Electrical Characterization Of The (La,Ca) (Cr,Co)O3 System, S. R. Sehlin, Harlan U. Anderson, Don M. Sparlin

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The results of electrical conductivity and thermopower measurements are presented for selected (La,Ca)(Cr,Co)O3 compositions. The La1 - xCaxCrO3 compounds are typical p-type small polaron conductors. The La1 - xCaxCrO3 compounds are found to be small polaron conductors at room temperature for x ≤ 0.20 with a higher electrical conductivity than the corresponding chromite's. The electrical conductivity at room temperature is lower for Co-rich compositions than for Cr-rich compositions for compositions containing 10 mol% and 20 mol% Ca. This fact is attributed to the trapping of p-type small polarons at energetically lower Cr sites, resulting in a broad room temperature conductivity …

Effects Of Large Aspect Ratios And Fluctuations On Hard X-Ray-Detection In Lower Hybrid Driven Divertor Tokamaks, Linda L. Vahala, George Vahala, Paul Bonoli Jan 1995

Effects Of Large Aspect Ratios And Fluctuations On Hard X-Ray-Detection In Lower Hybrid Driven Divertor Tokamaks, Linda L. Vahala, George Vahala, Paul Bonoli

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

It is shown that lower hybrid wave scattering from fluctuations plays a critical role in large aspect ratio divertor plasmas even through the edge density fluctuation levels are only at 1%. This is seen in the theoretically calculated electron power-density profiles which can be directly correlated to the standard experimental chordal hard x-ray profiles. It thus seems that fluctuation effects must be included in determining rf current-density profiles.

Justifying A Search For A Unifying Theory Of Unconstitutional Conditions, Roberto L. Corrada Jan 1995

Justifying A Search For A Unifying Theory Of Unconstitutional Conditions, Roberto L. Corrada

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

This essay explores why many scholars, including Frederick Schauer and Larry Alexander, feel that an attempt at unification of the doctrine of unconstitutional conditions is unworthy of scholarly attention. Although the subject of this particular essay is less ambitious than the many attempts that have been made to unify the doctrine of unconstitutional conditions, and indeed proposes no unifying theory itself, it nevertheless examines why attempts to explain the doctrine in a unified way might be valid even if no unification is ultimately possible. It also attempts to persuade that a unifying theory of the doctrine may be attainable, although …

The 1993 Klamath Falls, Oregon, Earthquake Sequence: Source Mechanisms From Regional Data, Jochen Braunmiller, John Nábělek, Beate Leitner, Anthony Qamar

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

We use regional broadband seismograms to obtain seismic moment-tensor solutions of the two September 20, 1993, Mw=6, Klamath Falls, Oregon earthquakes, their foreshock and largest aftershocks (MD>3.5). Several sub-groups with internally consistent solutions indicate activity on several fault segments and faults. From the estimated moment-tensors and depths of the main shocks and from the aftershock distribution we deduce that both main shocks occurred on an east-dipping normal fault, possibly related to the Lake of the Woods fault system. Rotation of T-axes between the two main shocks is consistent with the two dominant trends of the aftershocks …

Reproductive And Feeding Biology Of Selected Syngnathids (Pisces: Teleostei) Of The Western Atlantic, Rogerio Luiz Teixeira Jan 1995

Reproductive And Feeding Biology Of Selected Syngnathids (Pisces: Teleostei) Of The Western Atlantic, Rogerio Luiz Teixeira

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The reproductive and feeding biology of five syngnathid species of the western Atlantic were studied: the pipefishes Syngnathus fuscus, S. floridae, the lined seahorse Hippocampus erectus of Chesapeake Bay; and the pipefishes S. folletti and Oostethus lineatus, from southern and southeast Brazil, respectively. Male syngnathids incubate eggs received from females in a ventral brood pouch, females do not play any additional role in parental care after mating. This natural sex role reversal is a unique characteristic that all male syngnathids have. In other fishes, parental care is usually a female prerogative. Most pipefishes are polygamous, while seahorses are monogamous. Syngnathus …

Reflected Light Microscopy, Electron Microscopy, Electron Spectroscopy, And X-Ray Diffraction Mineralogical Characterization Of Electric Arc Furnace (Eaf) Dusts, Ann M. Hagni

Doctoral Dissertations

"The secondary steel industry in the United States generates 600,000 tons of electric arc furnace (EAF) dust each year. Over 5,000,000 tons of EAF dust are generated annually world wide. The dust, which is removed from off-gasses from the high temperature furnaces, is considered by the Environmental Protection Agency to be hazardous waste due to its leachable lead, cadmium, and chromium. In addition to hazardous components, EAF dust contains valuable zinc, averaging 19%. This study was initiated to determine the mineralogy and characterization of the dust to aid in the processing of the dust for metals recovery and rendering the …

Rangeland Reference Areas : Summary Of Cooperative Project Between The Western Australian Department Of Agriculture And The Environmental Protection Authority, D A. Blood

Resource management technical reports

The development of agriculture in south-western Australia has been characterised by the replacement of deep-rooted, perennial species of native vegetation with shallow-rooted, annual species. Except for the high rainfall areas, the native vegetation was able to intercept and transpire nearly all of the rainfall resulting in low stream flows and recharge to a groundwater system which was typically deep and restricted to the major valleys. The lack of surface or groundwater movement out of inland catchments used large quantities of cyclic salts to become stored in the regolith. Although annual crops and pastures can be high water users, they are …

A Linear-Time Recognition Algorithm For P4-Reducible Graphs, B. Jamison, S. Olariu Jan 1995

A Linear-Time Recognition Algorithm For P4-Reducible Graphs, B. Jamison, S. Olariu

Computer Science Faculty Publications

The P4-reducible graphs are a natural generalization of the well-known class of cographs, with applications to scheduling, computational semantics, and clustering. More precisely, the P4-reducible graphs are exactly the graphs none of whose vertices belong to more than one chordless path with three edges. A remarkable property of P4-reducible graphs is their unique tree representation up to isomorphism. In this paper we present a linear-time algorithm to recognize P4-reducible graphs and to construct their corresponding tree representation.

A Comprehensive, Automated Approach To Determining Sea Ice Thickness From Sar Data, Donna Haverkamp, Leen-Kiat Soh, Costas Tsatsoulis Jan 1995

A Comprehensive, Automated Approach To Determining Sea Ice Thickness From Sar Data, Donna Haverkamp, Leen-Kiat Soh, Costas Tsatsoulis

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

This paper documents an approach to sea ice classification through a combination of methods, both algorithmic and heuristic. The resulting system is a comprehensive technique, which uses dynamic local thresholding as a classification basis and then supplements that initial classification using heuristic geophysical knowledge organized in expert systems. The dynamic local thresholding method allows separation of the ice into thickness classes based on local intensity distributions. Because it utilizes the data within each image, it can adapt to varying ice thickness intensities to regional and seasonal charges and is not subject to limitations caused by using predefined parameters.
