In using a shared network of workstations for parallel processing, it is not only important to consider heterogeneity and differences in processing power between the workstations but also the dynamics of the system as a whole. In such a computing environment where the use of resources vary as other applications consume and release resources, intelligent scheduling of the parallel jobs onto the available resources is essential to maximize resource utilization. Despite this realization, however, there are few systems available that provide an infrastructure for the easy development and testing of these intelligent schedulers. Set-theoretic reconstructability analysis is used to characterize the structures of the mappings of elementary cellular automata. The minimum complexity structure for each ECA mapping, indexed by parameter σ, is more effective than the λ parameter of Langton as a predictor of chaotic dynamics.

Systems theory offers a language in which one might formulate a metaphysics (or more specifically an ontology) of problems. This proposal is based upon a conception of systems theory shared by von Bertalanffy, Wiener, Boulding, Rapoport, Ashby, Klir, and others, and expressed succinctly by Bunge, who considered game theory, information theory, feedback control theory, and the like to be attempts to construct an "exact and scientific metaphysics." Our prevailing conceptions of "problems" are concretized yet also fragmented and in fact dissolved by the standard reductionist model of science, which cannot provide a general framework for analysis. A Te V flare from the BL Lac object Mrk 421 was detected in May of 1994 by the Whipple Observatory air Cherenkov experiment during which the flux above 250 GeV increased by nearly an order of magnitude over a 2-day period. Contemporaneous observations by ASCA showed the X-ray flux to be in a very high state. We present these results, combined with the first ever simultaneous or nearly simultaneous observations at Ge V gamma-ray, UV, IR, mm, and radio energies for this nearest BL Lac object. While the GeV gamma-ray flux increased slightly, there is little evidence for variability …

Most work in the field of inductive inference regards the learning machine to be a passive recipient of data. In a prior paper the passive approach was compared to an active form of learning where the machine is allowed to ask questions. In this paper we continue the study of machines that ask questions by comparing such machines to teams of passive machines. This yields, via work of Pitt and Smith, a comparison of active learning with probabilistic learning. Also considered are query inference machines that learn an approximation of what is desired. We calculate the density of states of a damped quantum-mechanical harmonic oscillator which is described by a Caldeira-Leggett type model with Ohmic dissipation and a Drude-like cutoff. From the exact expression for the associated partition function, we derive the asymptotic behavior of the density of states using Tauberian theorems. An effective algorithm to evaluate the density of states is presented and examples are given. It is pointed out that the calculated density of states is an experimentally accessible quantity.

A function f from reals to reals (f:R-->R) is a uniformly antisymmetric function if there exists a gage function g:R-->(0,1) such that |f(x-h)-f(x+h)| is greater then or equal to g(x) for every x from R and 0R-->N, (see [K. Ciesielski, L. Larson, Uniformly antisymmetric functions, Real Anal. Exchange 19 (1993-94), 226-235]) while it is unknown whether such function can have a finite or bounded range. Let A stand for the class of all almost continuous functions from R to R and let A(A) be the smallest cardinality of a family F ⊆ R R for which there is no g: R → R with the property that f + g ∈ A for all f ∈ F. We define cardinal number A(D) for the class D of all real functions with the Darboux property similarly. It is known, that c < A(A) ≤ 2 c [10]. We will generalize this result by showing that the cofinality of A(A) is greater that c. Moreover, we will show that it is pretty much all that can be said about A(A) in ZFC, by showing that A(A) can be equal to any regular cardinal between c + and 2c and that it can be equal to 2c independently of the cofinality of 2c . This solves a problem of T. Natkaniec [10, Problem 6.1, p. 495]. We will also show that A(D) = A(A) and give a combinatorial characterization of this number. This solves another problem of Natkaniec. The food habits, caloric density, and population dynamics of walleye Stizostedion vitreum were determined in 1993 and 1994 and combined with information on energetics and growth to determine the trophic interactions of walleyes in Lake Oahe, South Dakota. Monofilament gill nets were set at three depths in the water column (bottom, suspended, and surface) from May through September, 1994 to determine the effect of gill net placement on catch rates of walleyes. Catch per unit effort of walleyes was greater in bottom nets during July (5.2/net-h) than any other month or net location. In addition, 25- and 38-mm mesh sizes …

A Monte Carlo code has been developed which very efficiently calculates plasma parameters, such as currents, potentials and transport coefficients for a fully three dimensional magnetic field configuration. The code computes the deviation, f, of the exact distribution function, f, from the Maxwellian, {dollar}F\sb{lcub}M{rcub},{dollar} with {dollar}\psi{dollar} the toroidal magnetic flux enclosed by a pressure surface and H the Hamiltonian. There has been a growing interest in the commercial aquaculture of striped bass, Morone saxatilis. Little is known, however, about the nutritional requirements and feeding physiology of striped bass larvae. The objectives of this study were (a) to evaluate the efficiency of the live food enrichment techniques in studying the nutritional requirements for polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), phospholipids and free amino acids, (b) to determine the ontogenetic changes of lipolytic enzymes, and (c) to develop a microencapsulated diet for striped bass larvae as full or partial replacement of live food. In a recent paper N. Mizoguchi and W. Takahashi gave a positive answer to the conjecture of S. Reich concerning the existence of fixed points of multi-valued mappings that satisfy a certain contractive condition. In this paper, we provide an alternative and somewhat more straightforward proof for the theorem of Mizoguchi and Takahashi. Also the problems associated with fixed points of weakly contractive multi-valued mappings are studied. Finally, we make a few comments that improve other results from their paper (J. Math. Anal. Appl. 141 (1989), 177-188).

We use a structural characterization of the metric projection PG(f), from the continuous function space to its one-dimensional subspace G, to derive a lower bound of the Hausdorff strong unicity constant (or weak sharp minimum constant) for PG and then show this lower bound can be attained. Then the exact value of Lipschitz constant for PG is computed. The process is a quantitative analysis based on the Gâteaux derivative of PG, a representation of local Lipschitz constants, the equivalence of local and global Lipschitz constants for lower semicontinuous mappings, and construction …

The seismic stratigraphic analysis of the upper Indus-Fan Complex has revealed the presence of six depositional sequences. Deposition of these sequences occurred primarily during the Miocene period. The Indus River drainage system that developed as a consequence of Himalayan orogeny transported the bulk of the sediments deposited in the Indus Fan. The distribution and thickness of the sequences of the upper Indus Fan are closely related to the canyon-channel systems. Seismic facies analysis of the slope has revealed the presence of a facies relationship that shows continued deepening from the time of deposition of slope fan to the latest deposits …

Emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from many industrial wastewater treatment facilities are a major source of air pollution, and getting much attention from EPA. In order to determine "Best Available Control Technology" and "Lowest Achievable Emission Rate" for controlling emissions of VOCs from industrial wastewater, the accurate estimation of VOCs emission rate and realistic modeling of contaminant volatilization are required.

Flow of nitrogen gas through a converging-diverging nozzle is simulated. The flow is modeled using the Navier-Stokes equations that have been modified for vibrational nonequilibrium. The energy equation is replaced by two equations. One equation accounts for energy effects due to the translational and rotational degrees of freedom, and the other accounts for the affects due to the vibrational degree of freedom. The energy equations are coupled by a relaxation time which measures the time required for the vibrational energy component to equilibrate with the translational and rotational energy components. A simple 2.5 layer numerical model was developed and used to illustrate the seasonal variability of heat and mass transports in the upper tropical Atlantic Ocean, associated with the seasonal movement of the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). The model ocean was forced by seasonally varying climatological wind and heat flux fields. The entrainment at the base of the mixed layer was scaled by wind stress and shear at the bottom of the mixed layer. On an annual average, the northward transport of the tropical warm water is about 11 Sv, with roughly 10 Sv associated with entrainment of upper thermocline …

Several well-preserved circa 2.6 Ga Archean granite-greenstone belts are exposed in the Slave Province of Northwest Territories, Canada. At Point Lake, a "supracrustal sequence" comprised mainly of mafic volcanic and metasedimentary rocks lies over and east of a granitoid gneissic terrane. Field and laboratory studies have helped to clarify the petrography and structural relationships of this fold-and-thrust belt. Traditional models have suggested that granite-greenstone belts in the Slave Province are relict continental rifts in which volcanic and sedimentary rocks filled troughs in older sialic crust. The theoretical investigation of two-photon, two-color intensity and depolarization spectra for the 6s2S1/2 → 5d2Dj → 11p2P3/2 transition in atomic caesium is considered. For quadrupole-dipole transitions the dependence of excitation from the ratio of reduced matrix elements is shown. The experimental method of determination of the value and sign of the ratio is proposed. Comparison of results for co- and counterpropagating beams revealed the strong dependence of the transition rate on the relative beam directions. Analysis of the influence of the external electric field on the process of absorption is presented. …
