Kinematic Implications Of Paleomagnetic Data From Lago Verde And Northern Isla Chiloe, Southern Chile, Brian C. (Brian Christopher) Steele Jan 1995

Kinematic Implications Of Paleomagnetic Data From Lago Verde And Northern Isla Chiloe, Southern Chile, Brian C. (Brian Christopher) Steele

WWU Graduate School Collection

Paleomagnetic techniques were used to determine crustal rotations at two locations along the Liquine Ofqui fault zone (LOFZ) in southern Chile, South America. East of the fault zone, near the town of Lago Verde, twelve sites drilled in intermediate volcanic rocks and diorite yielded a paleomagnetic pole at 82°S, 210.8°E (A95=8.3°), which, when compared to a Late Cretaceous reference pole (the mean of Butler et al. (1991) and Somoza (1994) poles) implies 17.7° ± 11.1° of in situ, clockwise rotation. At Cocotue Beach, west of the fault zone on Isla Chiloe, seven sites drilled in middle Tertiary …

Net Shore-Drift And Artificial Structures Within Grays Harbor, Willapa Bay, And Mouth Of The Columbia River, Washington, B. Patrice (Berenthine Patrice) Thomas

WWU Graduate School Collection

Net shore-drift, the overall result of sediment transport in the littoral zone, was studied along the shore within Grays Harbor, Willapa Bay, and mouth of the Columbia River, Washington. The length and direction of drift cells, which are discrete sediment compartments, was delineated using geomorphologic and sedimentologic indicators. Eight drift cells were identified in Grays Harbor, seven within Willapa Bay, and three along the section of the Columbia River shore studied. Drift cell lengths range from 200 m to approximately 6 km with an average of 1.5 km. Net shore-drift directions vary considerably with maximum fetch identified as the most …

Applicability Of Bispectral Analysis To Unstable Plasma Waves, Renaud Stauber Jan 1995

Applicability Of Bispectral Analysis To Unstable Plasma Waves, Renaud Stauber

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

A program to implement a spectral analysis technique called the bispectrum was written and tested with computer generated time series data. The application of the algorithm to the study of nonlinear interactions was demonstrated by a comparison of computed quantities with results from model equations found in the literature. Specifically determined were: the amplitude and phase of coupling coefficients, the power transfer function, the fraction of power associated with nonlinear coupling, and the identification of waves involved in a quadratic coupling interaction. A method of distinguishing the two parent waves from the daughter wave in this three-wave interaction is proposed …

A Mathematical Model Of Cycle Chemotherapy, J. C. Panetta, J. Adam Jan 1995

A Mathematical Model Of Cycle Chemotherapy, J. C. Panetta, J. Adam

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

A mathematical model is used to discuss the effects of cycle-specific chemotherapy. The model includes a constraint equation which describes the effects of the drugs on sensitive normal tissue such as bone marrow. This model investigates both pulsed and piecewise-continuous chemotherapeutic effects and calculates the parameter regions of acceptable dose and period. It also identifies the optimal period needed for maximal tumor reduction. Examples are included concerning the use of growth factors and how they can enhance the cell kill of the chemotherapeutic drugs.

A Diamond Thin Film Flow Sensor, Sacharia Albin, John C. Hagwood, John B. Cooper, David L. Gray, Scott D. Martinson, Michael A. Scott Jan 1995

A Diamond Thin Film Flow Sensor, Sacharia Albin, John C. Hagwood, John B. Cooper, David L. Gray, Scott D. Martinson, Michael A. Scott

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

We present the results of theoretical modeling and experimental testing of a diamond thin film sensor for flow studies. It is shown that the high thermal conductivity of a diamond film can enhance the frequency response of the flow sensor. One-dimensional heat diffusion equation was solved using the finite difference method for determining the frequency response. Two different sensor structures were analyzed: a Ni film on a quartz substrate (Ni/Q) and an intermediate layer of diamond film between the Ni film and quartz substrate (Ni/D/Q). The theoretical model predicts a frequency response for the Ni/D/Q sensor higher than that of …

This study was an initial attempt to understand the impact of parents, peers, the media, and sex education curricula on shaping adolescents' knowledge and attitudes about dating relationships and sexuality. In addition, participants' descriptions of what constitutes a "good" date and a "bad" date were investigated. One hundred participants (48 females, 52 males) aged thirteen to sixteen participated: half of the sample were early adolescents (13-14 years) and the other half were middle adolescents (15-16 years). All participants were asked to describe experienced or hypothetical "good" and "bad" dates. For "good" dates, respondents identified engaging in fun, recreational activities, whereas …

Hydrometeorological Investigations On A Small Valley Glacier In The Sawtooth Range, Ellesmere Island, Northwest Territories, Paul Michael Wolfe Jan 1995

Hydrometeorological Investigations On A Small Valley Glacier In The Sawtooth Range, Ellesmere Island, Northwest Territories, Paul Michael Wolfe

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Hydrometeorological techniques were employed during the summer of 1993 to study a small (4.7km2) valley glacier in the Sawtooth Range, Fosheim Peninsula, Ellesmere Island, Northwest Territories. The annual 1992-93 mass balance for Quviagivaa Glacier (unofficial name), and for the adjacent Nirukittuq Glacier (unofficial name) was -532mm and -530mm water equivalent respectively. The equilibrium line altitude was above the upper limit of the glaciers due to the exceptional warmth of the summer. Slight marginal shrinking in the areal extent of Quviagivaa Glacier since 1959 suggests that strongly negative mass balances such as those recorded in 1993 are not indicative of the …

Opportunities For The Integration Of Institutional Arrangements For Riparian Buffer Zone Management In Ontario, Canada, Jeffrey Willard King Jan 1995

Opportunities For The Integration Of Institutional Arrangements For Riparian Buffer Zone Management In Ontario, Canada, Jeffrey Willard King

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

A need exists in Ontario for improved management of land and water resources. In addition the need for increased integration within and among the agencies responsible for these resources is imperative. Between these two resources is the riparian zone, for which riparian vegetative buffer zones are a recognized Best Management Practice (BMP) for water quality improvement. However, the problem remains that each agency views buffers from a particular perspective. Hence, butters are being implemented primarily for a single purpose without considering the multiple use of buffers. To achieve an integrated management framework for riparian buffers, it is necessary to evaluate …

Ultraviolet Temporal Variability Of The Peculiar Star R Aquarii, S. R. Meier, Menas Kafatos Jan 1995

Ultraviolet Temporal Variability Of The Peculiar Star R Aquarii, S. R. Meier, Menas Kafatos

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

This paper is a comprehensive study of all far-UV spectra obtained with the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) satellite of the symbiotic star R Aquarii (R Aqr) covering a 13 yr period between 1979 and 1992. We have analyzed the ultraviolet emission for the compact H II region and the NE and SW extended "jetlike" filamentary structures. The results of our ultraviolet analysis indicate that the H II region and features A, B, and D of the NE jet are increasing in intensity, while the SW counterjet, feature A', has declined in intensity. We have found much stronger evidence that the …

Constructed Wetland Design Criteria : A Study Of Their Role In Contaminant Removal From Urban Stormwater Runoff, A. J. Braid Jan 1995

Constructed Wetland Design Criteria : A Study Of Their Role In Contaminant Removal From Urban Stormwater Runoff, A. J. Braid

Theses : Honours

This study was conducted to review effective design criteria for constructed wetlaads treating urban stormwater and to assess the design features of local constructed wetlands in relation to the theoretically ideal design features. The study was generated out of Water Authority of Western Australia (WAWA) concern that existing inconsistent design criteria may result in constructed wetlands not meeting contaminant removal objectives. Three components to the study involved: design criteria compiled from a critical review of relevant literature, field assessment of selected sites with significant differences in design, and a design critique of those sites based on the compiled design criteria. …

Transhipment Problem, Salt Exportation, Brian Hogben

Theses : Honours

In order to improve its shipping operations a major salt exporter needs to reduce costs, increase market share and improve customer service. This thesis examines the use of linear (LP) and nonlinear programming (NLP) as a means of solving a nonlinear transhipment problem associated with the export of salt. Tho feasibility of using a LP or NLP approach is explored, taking into consideration the computational time and useability of the models. To meet the demands of their customers the company currently uses heuristic methods to allocate varying size ships to different routes. To remain competitive the shipping options that are …

Implementation And Evaluation Of Enhanced Areal Interpolation Using Mapinfo And Mapbasic, Gordon Wragg Jan 1995

Implementation And Evaluation Of Enhanced Areal Interpolation Using Mapinfo And Mapbasic, Gordon Wragg

Theses : Honours

Many researchers today have a need to analyse data in a spatial context. An inherent problem is the mismatch of boundaries between the geographic regions for which data is collected and those regions for which the data is required. Often the solution is to interpolate data from one set of regions to another. This project examines and implements a method of areal interpolation that enables the user to use extra information in areal interpolation to increase the "intelligence ' of the process. This method of Enhanced Areal Interpolation uses a conditional Poisson distribution and the EM algorithm to provide estimated …

Proline Concentration As An Indicator Of The Level Of Salt Tolerance, Philomena Y. Rosalie Jan 1995

Proline Concentration As An Indicator Of The Level Of Salt Tolerance, Philomena Y. Rosalie

Theses : Honours

Each year approximately 20 million hectares of land become affected by increasing salinity. Salt tolerant plants are being used to rehabilitate salt affected areas. Plants use a variety of mechanisms to adapt to salt in their environments. Glycophytes tolerate low to moderate levels of salt while halophytes can tolerate very high salt levels. Many basic physiological attributes have been suggested as important components of a salt tolerant phenotype. These include, influx and/or efflux of ions across plasma membrane and the tonoplast, modification of membrane composition and synthesis of compatible solutes such as soluble carbohydrates, glycine betaines and proline. The project …

Implications Of Gamma-Ray Transparency Constraints In Blazars: Minimum Distances And Gamma-Ray Collimation, P. A. Becker, Menas Kafatos Jan 1995

Implications Of Gamma-Ray Transparency Constraints In Blazars: Minimum Distances And Gamma-Ray Collimation, P. A. Becker, Menas Kafatos

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We develop a general expression for the γ-γ absorption coefficient, αγγ, for γ-rays propagating in an arbitrary direction at an arbitrary point in space above an X-ray-emitting accretion disk. The X-ray intensity is assumed to vary as a power law in energy and radius between the outer disk radius, R0 , and the inner radius, Rm., which is the radius of marginal stability for a Schwarzschild black hole. We use our result for αγγ to calculate the γ-γ optical depth, Tγγ, for γ-rays created at height z and propagating at angle Φ relative to the disk axis, and we show …

The Classification Of Cave Minerals And Speleothems, Carol A. Hill, Paolo Forti Jan 1995

The Classification Of Cave Minerals And Speleothems, Carol A. Hill, Paolo Forti

International Journal of Speleology

The classification scheme of Hill and Forti, as used in the second edition of Cave Minerals of the World, is presented as a "practical" solution to the classification of cave minerals and speleothems. Classification and naming of cave minerals is by crystal class and follows nomenclature approved by the International Mineralogical Association. Classification of speleothems is based on morphology and whatever is known about origin, with division of speleothems into types, subtypes, and varieties. It is proposed that new speleothem types, subtypes, and names be approved by a UIS Commission of cave mineralogists.

Karst In Siliceous Rocks - Karst Landforms And Caves In The Auyàn-Tepui Massif (Est. Bolivar, Venezuela), Leonardo Piccini

International Journal of Speleology

During the expedition "Tepuy 93", six caves were explored in the precambrian quartzites of Roraima Group, in the Auyan-tepui massif. One of this caves reaches the depth of 370 m and a development of almost 3 km; its name is “Sima Auyan-tepui Noroeste” and it is currently the deepest cave in the world discovered in siliceous rocks The geological and morphological study of this cave has underlined again the importance of deep solutional weathering, along the network of fractures for the formation of caves in siliceous rocks. The different formation stages of the big superficial shafts, called “simas” were observed …

Karst In Siliceous Rocks: The Speleothem Medium Of Finger Flutings And Its Isotopic Geochemistry, Robert G. Bednarik Jan 1995

Karst In Siliceous Rocks: The Speleothem Medium Of Finger Flutings And Its Isotopic Geochemistry, Robert G. Bednarik

International Journal of Speleology

The isotopic geochemistry relating to the re-precipitation of calcite in caves is considered, in terms of its theory, natural manifestations, and relationship with questions of radiometric dating of carbonate speleothems. Specific forms of’ such deposits are considered, together with the various modification processes they are subjected to. More specifically, particular forms of rock art found within, as well as on or under such deposits are examined, such as finger flutings commonly found in caves of Europe and Australia. Some of the variables relating to their occurrence are elucidated, their preservation and possible dating is reviewed in the light of these …

Radio-Frequency Superconducting Parametric Transducer For Gravitational-Wave Antennae, M. A. Fisher, Mark F. Bocko, Linda E. Marchese, Guizhen Zhang, Munawar Karim

Physics Faculty/Staff Publications

We report on the design and testing of an ultrasensitive, electromechanical transducer for use on resonant mass gravitational wave antennae. The transducer is a superconducting, radio frequency resonant bridge circuit operating near 200 MHz. We have minimized several important sources of noise in this transducer system. The Johnson noise of the transducer circuit is reduced through using a superconducting niobium stripline circuit and low‐loss insulating materials. At a temperature of 4.2 K we have achieved unloaded electrical quality factors of 200 000. The bridge circuit is balanced by piezoelectric actuators which control the spacing between the proof mass and capacitive …

Comparing Traditional Statistical Models With Neural Network Models: The Case Of The Relation Of Human Performance Factors To The Outcomes Of Military Combat, William Oliver Hedgepeth Jan 1995

Comparing Traditional Statistical Models With Neural Network Models: The Case Of The Relation Of Human Performance Factors To The Outcomes Of Military Combat, William Oliver Hedgepeth

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Statistics and neural networks are analytical methods used to learn about observed experience. Both the statistician and neural network researcher develop and analyze data sets, draw relevant conclusions, and validate the conclusions. They also share in the challenge of creating accurate predictions of future events with noisy data.

Both analytical methods are investigated. This is accomplished by examining the veridicality of both with real system data. The real system used in this project is a database of 400 years of historical military combat. The relationships among the variables represented in this database are recognized as being hypercomplex and nonlinear.

The …

Software Reliability Issues: An Experimental Approach, Mary Ann Hoppa Jan 1995

Software Reliability Issues: An Experimental Approach, Mary Ann Hoppa

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis, we present methodologies involving a data structure called the debugging graph whereby the predictive performance of software reliability models can be analyzed and improved under laboratory conditions. This procedure substitutes the averages of large sample sets for the single point samples normally used as inputs to these models and thus supports scrutiny of their performances with less random input data.

Initially, we describe the construction of an extensive database of empirical reliability data which we derived by testing each partially debugged version of subject software represented by complete or partial debugging graphs. We demonstrate how these data …
