Compensation And Characterization Of Gallium Arsenide, Randy A. Roush
Compensation And Characterization Of Gallium Arsenide, Randy A. Roush
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The properties of transition metals in gallium arsenide have been previously investigated extensively with respect to activation energies, but little effort has been made to correlate processing parameters with electronic characteristics. Diffusion of copper in gallium arsenide is of technological importance due to the development of GaAs:Cu bistable photoconductive devices. Several techniques are demonstrated in this work to develop and characterize compensated gallium arsenide wafers. The material is created by the thermal diffusion of copper into silicon-doped GaAs. Transition metals generally form deep and shallow acceptors in GaAs, and therefore compensation is possible by material processing such that the shallow …

Helical Stacking In Dna 3-Way Junctions Containing 2 Unpaired Pyrimidines - Proton Nmr-Studies, Neocles B. Leontis, Michael T. Hills, Martial Piotto, Igor V. Ouporov, Arun Malhotra, David G. Gorenstein
Chemistry Faculty Publications
The proton NMR spectra of DNA three-way junction complexes (TWJ) having unpaired pyrimidines, 5'-TT- and 5'-TC- on one strand at the junction site were assigned from 2D NOESY spectra acquired in H2O and D2O solvents and homonuclear 3D NOESY-TOCSY and 3D NOESY-NOESY in D2O solvent. TWJ are the simplest branched structures found in biologically active nucleic acids. Unpaired nucleotides are common features of such structures and have been shown to stabilize junction formation. The NMR data confirm that the component oligonucleotides assemble to form conformationally homogeneous TWJ complexes having three double-helical, B-form arms. Two of the helical arms stack upon …
Modern Marine Sediments Of Bahia Concepcion: Patterns, Processes, And Potential Analogues To Neogene Rift Basin Deposits Of Baja California, Timothy William Reardon
Modern Marine Sediments Of Bahia Concepcion: Patterns, Processes, And Potential Analogues To Neogene Rift Basin Deposits Of Baja California, Timothy William Reardon
Honors Papers
Neogene strata in Baja California preserve a record of extensional basins produced during early phases of rifting in the Gulf of California. This actualistic study addresses the feasibility of using Holocene sediments of Bahia Concepcion - a rift basin forming a shallow marine bay In southern Baja California - as analogues for the interpretation of Neogene strata in the Pliocene Loreto Basin. Three major lithofacies occur in Bahia Concepcion: Mud sediments dominate most of the central portion of the bay. Moderately sorted sands occur adjacent to shorelines formed by coalesced alluvial fans and a broad alluvial plain, while carbonate sands …
Mcplib: A Collection Of Nonlinear Mixed Complementarity Problems, Steven P. Dirkse, Michael C. Ferris
Mcplib: A Collection Of Nonlinear Mixed Complementarity Problems, Steven P. Dirkse, Michael C. Ferris
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
The origins and some motivational details of a collection of nonlinear mixed complementarity problems are given. This collection serves two purposes. Firstly, it gives a uniform basis for testing currently available and new algorithms for mixed complementarity problems. Function and Jacobian evaluations for the resulting problems are provided via a GAMS interface, making thorough testing of algorithms on practical complementarity problems possible. Secondly, it gives examples of how to formulate many popular problem formats as mixed complementarity problems and how to describe the resulting problems in GAMS format. We demonstrate the ease and power of formulating practical models in the …
Duality On Noncompact Manifolds And Complements Of Topological Knots, Gerard A. Venema
Duality On Noncompact Manifolds And Complements Of Topological Knots, Gerard A. Venema
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
Let be the image of a topological embedding of into. In this paper the homotopy groups of the complement. are studied. In contrast with the situation in the smooth and piecewise-linear categories, it is shown that the first nonstandard homotopy group of the complement of such a topological knot can occur in any dimension in the range 1 through n - 2. If the first nonstandard homotopy group of the complement occurs above the middle dimension, then the end of must have a nontrivial homotopy group in the dual dimension. The complement has the proper homotopy type of if both …
Depositional Environments And Paleogeography Of The Winnipeg Group (Ordovician), Williston Basin, North Dakota, Jonathan B. Ellingson
Depositional Environments And Paleogeography Of The Winnipeg Group (Ordovician), Williston Basin, North Dakota, Jonathan B. Ellingson
Theses and Dissertations
The Winnipeg Group (Upper Ordovician) unconformably overlies the Deadwood Formation (Cambrian - Lower Ordovician) over most of North Dakota, except in the extreme eastern part, where it lies directly on Precambrian basement rocks. The Winnipeg is conformably overlain by the Red River Formation (Upper Ordovician). The Winnipeg reaches a maximum thickness of 448 feet (136.6 m) in the center of the basin, Williams County. The Winnipeg Group consists of three formations, in ascending order, the Black Island, Icebox, and Roughlock Formations. The Black Island Formation is, herein, formally divided into the Hawkeye Valley and the Garland Members.
The Hawkeye Valley …
Prey Selectivity By Naticid Gastropods From Tertiary Sediments Of The United States Coastal Plain, Robert N. Sickler
Prey Selectivity By Naticid Gastropods From Tertiary Sediments Of The United States Coastal Plain, Robert N. Sickler
Theses and Dissertations
Previous studies have shown that naticid gastropod predators are highly selective of prey species in accordance with the Kitchell et al. (1981) cost-benefit model. In addition, earlier studies have demonstrated selectivity of drillhole siting and intraspecific prey size. This study focuses on prey selectivity by Oligocene naticid gastropods and is used to test Vermeij's (1987) hypothesis of escalation. The hypothesis of escalation states that biologic hazards have increased during the Phanerozoic and that organisms have either had to adapt to these hazards or face possible extinction (Vermeij, 1987). Naticid predation on molluscan assemblages is one of several examples used to …
Salinity, Radon, And Radon Precursors In The Soils Of Grand Forks County, North Dakota, Kevin L. Solie
Salinity, Radon, And Radon Precursors In The Soils Of Grand Forks County, North Dakota, Kevin L. Solie
Theses and Dissertations
High levels of indoor radon have been observed in many areas of the Red River Valley and particularly in Grand Forks County of North Dakota. Data from the University of North Dakota (UND) Radon Monitoring Facility indicated more than 80% of the dwellings tested had radon levels greater than the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) action limit of 4 pCi/l. High radon levels may pose a health threat (USEPA, 1986) to valley residents.
A review of existing data indicates that areas of the Red River Valley in North Dakota with elevated soil salinity also exhibit higher equivalent uranium (eU) …
Radon Reduction, Improvement Of Indoor Air Quality, And Energy Savings Through An Original Solar Ventilation System, Heather E. Rhoads
Radon Reduction, Improvement Of Indoor Air Quality, And Energy Savings Through An Original Solar Ventilation System, Heather E. Rhoads
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This study evaluated the improvement of indoor air quality and energy savings achieved, by an original solar ventilation system installed at test sites exhibiting elevated radon levels. Conventional residential energy conservation measures that limit air exchange rates between the indoors and outdoors have been shown to increase concentrations of radioactive radon decay products as well as other indoor air contaminants. Growing concern about radon lung cancer risks, carbon monoxide poisoning, and the "sick building syndrome" have increased demand for improved indoor air quality. Due to added heating and cooling loads, ventilation generally incurs substantial installation and operational costs. All commercially …
Some Relationships Between Sedimentary Trace Metal Concentrations And Freshwater Phytoplankton And Sedimentary Diatom Species Composition, Allan Hayes Vogel
Some Relationships Between Sedimentary Trace Metal Concentrations And Freshwater Phytoplankton And Sedimentary Diatom Species Composition, Allan Hayes Vogel
Dissertations and Theses
Sediments from 21 Oregon lakes were analyzed for seven metals (Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Co, Ni, V) in three forms (exchangeable, organic+sulfides, and oxyhydroxides+ oxides+ carbonates) using a sequential fractionation procedure. The summer epilimnetic filterable concentration of an eighth (Mo) was also determined. Sedimentary diatom remains and summer phytoplankton populations of the lakes were correlated with the 22 metal parameters and with conservative water chemistry parameters, estimators of lake productivity, and watershed geology. Both the sedimentary metals and the two populations of primary producers correlated best with the ecoregions of Omernik and Gallant (1986). A number of species possessed correlations …

A Three-Dimensional Hydrodynamic-Eutrophication Model (Hem-3d) : Description Of Water Quality And Sediment Process Submodels, Kyeong Park, Albert Y. Kuo, Jian Shen, John M. Hamrick
Reports
Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) has been developing a general purpose three-dimensional hydrodynamic and sediment transport model, Environmental Fluid Dynamics Computer Code (EFDC; Hamrick 1992). The real-time model simulates density and topographically-induced circulation as well as tidal and wind-driven flows, and spatial and temporal distributions of salinity, temperature and sediment concentration. The model also is capable of handling the wetting and drying of shallow area, hydraulic control structures, vegetation resistance for wetlands and Lagrangian particle tracking. The information of physical transport processes, both advective and diffusive, simulated by the hydrodynamic model can be used to account for the transport …

Investigation And Long-Term Monitoring Of Phragmites Australis Within Virginia's Constructed Wetland Sites : Final Report, Kirk J. Havens, Walter I. Priest Iii, Harry Berquist
Reports
The use of constructed wetlands to replace natural wetlands is becoming pandemic. An investigation using Global Positioning System technology to map the vegetated communities of fifteen of the largest constructed wetlands in Virginia reveals that 80% are colonized by the invasive species, Phragmites australis Trin., and/or aggressive species, Typha spp. Tidally influenced wetlands that have subtidal perimeter ditches have significantly less (p<0.05) P. australis in the wetland interior than those without perimeter ditches. Fractured regression analyses show that 6-years after constructionP. australis invasion can be extensive. Linear regression analysis suggests that, if conditions remain favorable for P. australis colonization, constructed wetlands could be overrun in 40 years.

Field Study Of Currents At Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, Virginia, John M. Brubaker
Reports
As a component of an investigation into biofouling problems near the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, a field study of currents was conducted in the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River in the vicinity of the shipyard's aircraft carrier slips. The objective of this study was to determine the magnitude and direction of currents in an area encompassing the turning basin adjacent to the slips, and the transitional regions to the north and south where the river tapers from a width of approximately 600 m in the turning basin to its more typical width of 150 m. To the north, the transition …

Seizure Threshold In Electroconvulsive Therapy: I. Initial Seizure Threshold, C. Edward Coffey, Joseph Lucke, Richard D. Weiner, Andrew D. Krystal, Michael Aque
Richard R Weiner
We measured initial seizure threshold by means of a structured stimulus dosage titration procedure in a clinical sample of 111 depressed patients undergoing brief-pulse, constantcurrent electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Initial seizure threshold was approximately 60 millicoumbs (mc) (10 Joules) on average, but varied widely (6-fold) across patients. Initial seizure threshold was predicted by four variables: electrode placement (higher with bilateral), gender (higher in men), age (higher with increasing age), and dynamic impedance (inverse relationship). Use of neuroleptic medication was associated with a lower seizure threshold. EEG seizure duration was inversely related to initial seizure threshold, but no other relations with seizure …

Studies of amplification and/or overexpression of c-myc, HER-2/neu, and H-ras in breast cancer have shown that each is associated with a poor prognosis. The purpose of this study was to explore the possibility that there is a preferred sequence of amplification of these oncogenes in breast cancer. The frequencies of amplification and patterns of co-amplification of c-myc, HER-2/neu, and H-ras were studied in a group of 84 breast cancers. The data suggested a preferred sequence of amplification that consisted of c-myc amplification-HER-2/neu amplification-H-ras amplification. This model was supported by loglinear analysis. In addition, the levels of amplification of JC-A, a …
