Multimedia computing promises access to any type of visual or aural medium on the desktop. But in this networked future, will every type of media be accessible from every terminal device? Current multimedia standards do not allow content that is authored for high-bandwidth workstations to scale down for low-bandwidth applications. The problem is that application requests are commonly interpreted as requests for the highest possible quality and resource overloads are handled by ad hoc methods. We can begin to solve this problem by specifying Quality of Service (QOS) requirements based on functionality rather than on content encoding and device capabilities.

We introduce and analyze techniques for the reduction of aliased signal energy in a staring infrared imaging system. A standard staring system uses a fixed two-dimensional detector array that corresponds to a fixed spatial sampling frequency determined by the detector pitch or spacing. Aliasing will occur when sampling a scene containing spatial frequencies exceeding half the sampling frequency. This aliasing can significantly degrade the image quality. The aliasing reduction schemes presented here, referred to as microscanning, exploit subpixel shifts between time frames of an image sequence. These multiple images are used to reconstruct a single frame with reduced aliasing. If …

A precise determination of the effective Bs0→K+K− lifetime can be used to constrain contributions from physics beyond the Standard Model in the Bs0 meson system. Conventional approaches select B meson decay products that are significantly displaced from the B meson production vertex. As a consequence, B mesons with low decay times are suppressed, introducing a bias to the decay time spectrum which must be corrected. This analysis uses a technique that explicitly avoids a lifetime bias by using a neural network based trigger and event selection. Using 1.0fb−1 of data recorded by the LHCb experiment, the effective Bs0→K+K− lifetime is …

Invariant features and quick matching algorithms are two major concerns in the area of automatic visual recognition. The former reduces the size of an established model database, and the latter shortens the computation time. This dissertation, will discussed both line invariants under perspective projection and parallel implementation of a dynamic programming technique for shape recognition. The feasibility of using parallel machines can be demonstrated through the dramatically reduced time complexity.

The effect of sulfur poisoning on the activity of catalysts containing 1.5% platinum supported on γ-Al2O3, TiO2, ZrO2, or SiO2 was investigated in this study. These four catalysts were aged with 100 ppmv H2S in air at 400°C for 24 hours to determine the effect of sulfur poisoning under oxidizing conditions. In separate experiments, 1.5% Pt/γ-Al2O3 catalyst was aged in nitrogen containing 100 ppmv H2S to obtain a frame of reference for non-oxidizing conditions.

This paper proposes the application of approximate graph matching techniques for best-match searching of two-dimensional chemical structure databases based upon topology. Chemical structures are represented as labeled graphs, each atom a node in the graph and each bond an edge. By inserting; deleting and renaming nodes/edges, one structure may be transformed into another. We define similarity as the weighted sum of the costs of these edit operations. An algorithm for approximating the minimum distance between two graphs based on simulated annealing is applied. This research addressed the ability of Cr2O3 and 5% Cr2O3/γ-Al2O3 to catalytically oxidize trichioroethylene (TCE). Various types of Cr2O3 catalysts were compared with Pt, CuO and Fe2O3 which were previously tested in our laboratory. This study investigates volume changes in fine-grained soil formations and their effect on pneumatically induced fractures. Pneumatic fracturing is an enhancement technology for in situ remediation of hazardous waste sites, which increases the formation permeability by creating fractures. A number of formation properties and environmental conditions which affect fracture aperture were identified in this study.
Laboratory experiments were performed with control devices to investigate idealized fracture flow under linear and radial flow geometries. Soil washing is an ex-situ process employing chemical and physical extraction and separation techniques to remove a broad range of organic, inorganic, and radioactive contaminants from soils. This research investigates the enhanced soil washing of a high level Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) contaminated coal tar soil by the application of ultrasound energy coupled with surfactant (soap) emulsions and attempts to optimize pollutant removal from contaminated soils. The non-ionic surfactant, octyl-phenyl-ethoxylate, was used as the surfactant.

For the past two decades, water quality of both natural and man-made lakes has been a major environmental concern. Numerous studies suggest that land use patterns and/or storm water runoff are major factors in nutrient loading and bacterial contamination of freshwater lakes. In 1986, the Property Owners Association at Lake Latonka in Jackson Center, Pa., installed three sediment control structures in an attempt to reduce the amount of nonpoint-source pollution entering the lake. This study is focused on the synthesis and characterization of silicon dioxide thin films deposited on silicon wafers by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition(PECVD), using diethylsilane (DES) as a precursor and nitrous oxide (N2O) as the oxidant. The process parameters, such as temperature, pressure and reactant gas composition have been systematically varied and their effects on the film growth rate and properties were investigated. The growth rate was found to be inversely proportional to the temperature in the examined range of 100-300°C. It increased with increasing N2O/DES flow rate ratio as the total flow rate increased …

Calcification is the most frequent cause of clinical dysfunction of glutaraldehyde treated bioprosthetic heart valves. In this study, we compared calcification of bioprostheses of the No-ReactTM and the conventional glutaraldehyde treated pericardium by both in-vivo and in-vitro methods, and to further delineate the role of the host's inflammatory response in implant degeneration.
In the in-vitro study, the two types of pericardial samples were placed in individual polystyrene tubes containing physiological concentrations of calcium and phosphate and incubated for 21 days at 37°C. The integration of a functional component into a logic language extends the expressive power of the language. One logic language which would benefit from such an extension is Gödel, a prototypical language at the leading edge of the research in logic programming. We present a modification of the Gödel parser which enables the parsing of evaluable functions in Gödel. As the first part of an extended Gödel, the parser produces output similar to the output from the original Gödel parser, ensuring that Gödel modules are properly handled by the extended-Gödel parser. Black bear (Ursus amerlcanus) damage to 108 lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) trees was found in a mixed conifer habitat in central Oregon. No trees of three other conifer species were injured. Eighty-nine percent of the damage occurred in the same year. Nearly 20% of the freshly damaged trees had bark removed from more than 75% of the circumference and, judging from the fate of trees damaged in prior years, probably succumbed.

A sharp maximum in the critical current Jc as a function of temperature just below the melting point of the Abrikosov flux lattice has recently been observed in both low and high temperature superconductors. This peak effect is strongest in twinned crystals for fields aligned with the twin planes. We propose that this peak signals the breakdown of the collective pinning regime and the crossover to strong pinning of single vortices on the twin boundaries. This crossover is very sharp and can account for the steep drop of the differential resistivity observed in experiments.

Two-proton correlation functions for central collisions of 36Ar+45Sc at E/A=80, 120, and 160 MeV are compared to calculations with the Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (BUU) transport model. Agreement is found at E/A=80MeV, but the model predicts too large correlations at E/A=120 and 160 MeV. The discrepancy may be due to delayed emission of protons from particle-unstable states not modeled in BUU.

Angle-resolved photoemission and resonant photoemission have been used to determine the relative changes of the electron effective mass and the screening parameter across the nonmetal to metal transition in the magnesium thin films on Mo(112). Both the screening length and the electron effective mass exhibit a gradual change with Mg coverage in the transition range between half and one monolayer. The relationship of these two different measures of metallicity is in surprisingly good agreement with the relationship predicted by theory for the Mott-Hubbard transition. Our results indicate the importance of electron-electron correlation within the overlayer.

A comprehensive chemical-dynamical model is used to investigate the interaction of gravity waves with twenty minor species involved in the atomic sodium chemistry in the mesopause region. We find that chemistry becomes important on the underside of the sodium layer, primarily below 85 km altitude, where the relative importance of chemistry in wave-driven sodium fluctuations increases with increasing wave period and increasing horizontal wavelength. We also find that for altitudes below 80 km an adequate determination of the effects of chemistry in these fluctuations requires the inclusion of several reactions related to ozone chemistry.
