Complexity Analysis Of Two Permutations Used By Fast Cosine Transform Algorithms, Sean S.B. Moore, Leonard F. Wisniewski
Complexity Analysis Of Two Permutations Used By Fast Cosine Transform Algorithms, Sean S.B. Moore, Leonard F. Wisniewski
Computer Science Technical Reports
Recently developed fast cosine transform (FCT) algorithms require fewer operations than any other known general algorithm. Similar to related fast transform algorithms (e.g., the FFT), these algorithms permute the data before, during, or after the computation of the transform. The choice of this permutation may be an important consideration in reducing the complexity of the permutation algorithm. In this paper, we derive the complexity to generate the permutation mappings used in these FCT algorithms for power-of-2 data sets by representing them as linear index transformations and translating them into combinational circuits. Moreover, we show that one of these permutations not …

Geochemistry Of The Boring Lava Along The West Side Of The Tualatin Mountains And Of Sediments From Drill Holes In The Portland And Tualatin Basins, Portland, Oregon, Michelle Lynn Barnes
Dissertations and Theses
Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA) was used to identify geochemical groups in Boring Lava along the west side of the Tualatin Mountains, and in sediments of the Portland and Tualatin basins. Samples of Boring Lava were obtained from TriMet drill core collected during planning of the tunnel alignment for the Westside Light Rail line. Additional samples of Boring Lava were collected from outcrops along the west side of the Tualatin Mountains. Samples of sediment from the Tualatin and Portland basins were obtained from drill core collected during an Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries (DOGAMI) Earthquake Hazards Mapping project. …
Lattice Quantum Gravity: Review And Recent Developments, Simon Catterall
Lattice Quantum Gravity: Review And Recent Developments, Simon Catterall
Physics - All Scholarship
We review the status of different approaches to lattice quantum gravity indicating the successes and problems of each. Recent developments within the dynamical triangulation formulation are then described. Plenary talk at LATTICE 95 July 11-15, Melbourne, Australia.

A Real-Space Renormalization Group For Random Surfaces, Simon Catterall, G. Thorleifsson
Physics - All Scholarship
We propose a new real-space renormalization group transformation for dynamical triangulations. It is shown to preserve geometrical exponents such as the string susceptibility and Hausdorff dimension. We furthermore show evidence for a fixed point structure both in pure gravity and gravity coupled to a critical Ising system. In the latter case we are able to extract estimates for the gravitationally dressed exponents which agree to within 2-3% of the KPZ formula.

Electrostatic Interactions At Membrane-Water Interfaces And Distribution Of 2, 4, 6-Trichlorophenol In A Membrane Model System, Isolde Sieder
Dissertations and Theses
It is generally accepted that biological membranes consist of a lipid bilayer matrix with proteins incorporated into the lipid bilayer. Typically, these membranes are negatively charged due to the presence of negatively charged lipids in the bilayer as well as negatively charged molecular groups on proteins. Biologically active molecules, such as environmental pollutants, enter the membrane from the aqueous phase by adsorption or partitioning into the lipid bilayer. The thesis consists of two parts. Part I is a computational study of spatial distribution of electric potential in the aqueous portion of the membrane-water interface using two models of charge distribution: …

Drought Monitoring And Information Centre Established For Arid Zone Of South Africa, Louis G. Du Pisani, Reep Verloren Van Themaat, Francis Roux
Drought Network News (1994-2001)
Drought policy in the Republic of South Africa has been extensively reviewed in Drought Network News (Bruwer, 1989; Bruwer, 1990a; Bruwer, 1990b). The protection of natural resources against deterioration (natural vegetation = veld) and the protection of rural communities and infrastructure against disruption of agricultural and socioeconomic development have always been major thrusts behind drought relief subsidies.
Since 1980, two important provisos for drought relief payments to stock farmers have been implemented: (1) a drought must assume disaster proportions (Bruwer, 1990b) and (2) stock numbers must not exceed the official carrying capacity (Department of Agricultural Development, 1992).

Estimating Time Available For Sensor Fusion Exception Handling, Robin R. Murphy, Erika Rogers
Estimating Time Available For Sensor Fusion Exception Handling, Robin R. Murphy, Erika Rogers
Computer Science and Software Engineering
In previous work, we have developed a generate, test, and debug methodology for detecting, classifying, and responding to sensing failures in autonomous and semi-autonomous mobile robots. An important issue has arisen from these efforts: how much time is there available to classify the cause of the failure and determine an alternative sensing strategy before the robot mission must be terminated?
In this paper, we consider the impact of time for teleoperation applications where a remote robot attempts to autonomously maintain sensing in the presence of failures yet has the option to contact the local for further assistance. Time limits are …

Tunable Picosecond Infrared Laser System Based On Parametric Amplification In Ktp With A Ti:Sapphire Amplifier, D. E. Gragson, D. S. Alavi, G. L. Richmond
Chemistry and Biochemistry
A picosecond laser system that will generate high-power tunable IR pulses with bandwidths suitable for spectroscopic applications is discussed. The system is based on white-light continuum generation in ethylene glycol and optical parametric amplification in potassium titanyl phosphate. The nonlinear-optical processes are driven by a regeneratively amplified Ti:sapphire laser that produces 1.7-ps pulses at a repetition rate of 1 kHz. Energies as high as 40 and 12 µJ have been achieved over the signal (1.02–1.16-µm) and idler (2.6–3.7-µm) tuning ranges, respectively. The IR beam temporal and spatial characteristics are also presented.

Reply To ‘‘Comment On ‘Brillouin-Scattering Study Of The Elastic Constants Of Phenothiazine Through The Phase Transition’ ’’, J. Sartwell, Craig J. Eckhardt
Craig J. Eckhardt Publications
Disagreement in the ordering of relative magnitudes of the elastic constants of phenothiazine with those of Ecolivet et al. is resolved. Dubious methodologies and assumptions employed by Ecolivet et al. in their measurements, approximations, and arguments [C. Ecolivet et al., Phys. Rev. B 44, 4185 (1991)] are noted. Samples employed by these investigators in both their ultrasonic and Brillouin measurements are shown to exhibit properties consistent with impure samples and inconsistent with those of Sartwell and Eckhardt.
Drought Returns To The United Kingdom, Terry Marsh
Drought Returns To The United Kingdom, Terry Marsh
Drought Network News (1994-2001)
The privatization of the water industry in 1989 heralded a new era in water management in England and Wales, but it also coincided with the beginning of a period of volatile climatic patterns that have served to strongly underline a continuing vulnerability to unusual weather patterns. Following the very protracted drought that lasted until late 1992 in parts of eastern England, the resilience of water supply arrangements in the United Kingdom was again severely tested during a remarkably dry five-month spell beginning in the early spring of 1995. The water resources outlook at the beginning of this period was exceptionally …
Assessment Of Recent Droughts In Tamil Nadu, K. K. Nathan
Assessment Of Recent Droughts In Tamil Nadu, K. K. Nathan
Drought Network News (1994-2001)
Tamil Nadu, a coastal state in south India, is prone to droughts. The climate of the state ranges from dry subhumid to semiarid. The state has three distinct rainfall climates: (1) advancing monsoon period (from June to September), with strong southwest winds; (2) northeast monsoon (from October to December), with dominant northeast winds; and (3) dry season (from January to May). The normal annual rainfall of the state is about 945 mm.
Tamil Nadu is classified into seven agroclimatic zones: northeast, northwest, west, southern, high rainfall, high altitude hilly, and Cauvery Delta (the most fertile agricultural zone). The Cauvery Delta …
