Finding Real-Valued Single-Source Shortest Paths In O(N^3) Expected Time, Stavros G. Kolliopoulos, Clifford Stein Oct 1995

Finding Real-Valued Single-Source Shortest Paths In O(N^3) Expected Time, Stavros G. Kolliopoulos, Clifford Stein

Computer Science Technical Reports

Given an $n$-vertex directed network $G$ with real costs on the edges and a designated source vertex $s$, we give a new algorithm to compute shortest paths from $s$. Our algorithm is a simple deterministic one with $O(n^2 \log n)$ expected running time over a large class of input distributions. The shortest path problem is an old and fundamental problem with a host of applications. Our algorithm is the first strongly-polynomial algorithm in over 35 years to improve upon some aspect of the running time of the celebrated Bellman-Ford algorithm for arbitrary networks, with any type of cost assignments.

The Support Of Measure-Valued Branching Processes In A Random Environment, Donald A. Dawson, Yi Li, Carl Mueller Oct 1995

The Support Of Measure-Valued Branching Processes In A Random Environment, Donald A. Dawson, Yi Li, Carl Mueller

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

We consider the one-dimensional catalytic branching process introduced by Dawson and Fleischmann, which is a modification of the super Brownian motion. The catalysts are given by a nonnegative infinitely divisible random measure with independent increments. We give sufficient conditions for the global support of the process to be compact, and sufficient conditions for noncompact global support. Since the catalytic process is related to the heat equation, compact support may be surprising. On the other hand, the super-Brownian motion has compact global support. We find that all nonnegative stable random measures lead to compact global support, and we give an example …

Imaging And Spectroscopy Of Damped Lyα Quasi-Stellar Object Absorption-Line Clouds, James Lowenthal, Craig J. Hogan, Richard F. Green, Bruce Woodgate, Adeline Caulet, Larry Brown, Jill Bechtold Oct 1995

Imaging And Spectroscopy Of Damped Lyα Quasi-Stellar Object Absorption-Line Clouds, James Lowenthal, Craig J. Hogan, Richard F. Green, Bruce Woodgate, Adeline Caulet, Larry Brown, Jill Bechtold

Astronomy: Faculty Publications

We present the results of a multifaceted search for line emission from the vicinities of high-redshift quasi-stellar object (QSO) absorption-line clouds, most of them damped Lyα systems at z ≳ 2. Seven fields containing QSOs with known intervening damped Lyα absorbers were imaged with the GSFC Fabry-Perot Imager to search for diffuse redshifted Lyα. Apart from the one Lyα companion galaxy reported previously, no confirmed extended Lyα emission was detected down to 3 σ flux levels of around 3 x 10-17 ergs s-1 cm-2, corresponding to star formation rates ≲1 M⊙ yr-1, assuming case B recombination, a reasonable initial mass …

We report performance measurements of a sub-millimeter resolution CdZnTe strip detector developed as a prototype for astronomical instruments operating with good efficiency in the 30-300 keV photon energy range. The prototype is a 1.4 mm thick, 64×64 contact stripe CdZnTe array of 0.375 mm pitch in both dimensions. Pulse height spectra were recorded in orthogonal-stripe coincidence mode which demonstrate room-temperature energy resolution <10 keV (FWHM) for 122 keV photons with a peak-to-valley ratio >5:1. Good response is also demonstrated at higher energies using a coplanar grid readout configuration. Spatial resolution capabilities finer than the stripe pitch are demonstrated. We present the image of a 133Ba source viewed through a collimator …

A Zeta Function For Flows With Positive Templates, Michael C. Sullivan Oct 1995

A Zeta Function For Flows With Positive Templates, Michael C. Sullivan

Articles and Preprints

A zeta function for a map f : MM is a device for counting periodic orbits. For a topological flow however, there is not a clear meaning to the period of a closed orbit. We circumvent this for flows which have positive templates by counting the “twists” in the stable manifolds of the periodic orbits.

Coherent Excitation Of The Singlet-Triplet Mixed 1s4f State Of Helium, Jingbo Wang, J. F. Williams, Andris T. Stelbovics, John E. Furst, Don H. Madison

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we present a detailed theoretical description for the coherent electron-impact excitation, the subsequent time evolution, and the cascading decay process of the singlet-triplet mixed 1s4f state of helium. The excitation amplitude and phase of each sublevel of this state are related to measurable coincidence intensities and polarizations of the emitted photons. It is found that the intensity and polarization of the emitted photons are time modulated due to the singlet and triplet mixing in the 1s4f state.

Strong X-Ray Emission From High-Temperature Plasmas Produced By Intense Irradiation Of Clusters, T. Ditmire, Thomas D. Donnelly, R. W. Falcone, M. D. Perry

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

The interaction of an intense laser pulse with large (∼100Å) clusters present in pulsed gas jets is shown to produce novel plasmas with electron temperatures far in excess of that predicted by above-threshold ionization theory. The enhanced absorption of the laser light by the dense clusters results in the production of high ion charge states via collisional ionization resulting in strong x-ray emission from the hot plasma.

A Note On Carnot Geodesics In Nilpotent Lie Groups, Christophe Golé, Ron Karidi Oct 1995

A Note On Carnot Geodesics In Nilpotent Lie Groups, Christophe Golé, Ron Karidi

Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications

We show that strictly abnormal geodesics arise in graded nilpotent Lie groups. We construct a group, with a left invariant bracket-generating distribution, for which some Carnot geodecics are strictly abnormal and, in fact, not normal in any subgroup. In the 2-step case we also prove that these geodesics are always smooth. Our main technique is based on the equations for the normal and abnormal curves, which we derive (for any Lie group) explicitly in terms of the structure constants. © 1995 Plenum Publishing Corporation.

Doubled Co2 Experiments With The Global Change Research Center Two-Dimensional Statistical Dynamical Climate Model, R. M. Mackay, M. A. K. Khalil

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The zonally averaged response of the Global Change Research Center two-dimensional statistical dynamical climate model (GCRC 2-D SDCM) to a doubling of atmospheric carbon dioxide (350 parts per million by volume (ppmv) to 700 ppmv) is reported. The model solves the two-dimensional primitive equations in finite difference form (mass continuity, Newton's second law, and the first law of thermodynamics) for the prognostic variables: zonal mean density, zonal mean zonal velocity, zonal mean meridional velocity, and zonal mean temperature on a grid that has 18 nodes in latitude and 9 vertical nodes (plus the surface). The equation of state, p=rhoRT, and …

A direct intercomparison of near-surface tropospheric HO concentration measurements by two different techniques was made in October–November 1992 at a rural site near Pullman, Washington. The atmosphere at the site is believed to contain low levels of anthropogenic pollution. The instruments' inlets were located at the same height (3.5 m) above the ground and were separated by 10 m along a line normal to the prevailing wind. Readings of the FAGE3 and radiocarbon instruments showed a high correlation (r² = 0.74) despite HO concentrations that were frequently near the detection limit of the instruments. An unweighted least squares regression shows …

Height Measurements Of Oi (557.7 Nm) Gravity Wave Structure Over The Hawaiian Islands During Aloha-93, Michael J. Taylor, G. R. Swenson, V. Taylor

All Physics Faculty Publications

During the ALOHA‐93 campaign simultaneous observations of gravity wave structure in the OI(557.7 nm) nightglow emission were made using two all‐sky CCD imagers; one located near the summit of Haleakala Crater, Maui and the other at Mauna Loa Observatory, Hawaii. On 19 October a set of bright, planar, monochromatic waves was imaged by both systems as it progressed rapidly over the Hawaiian Islands. Triangulation on these wave forms indicates a mean altitude of 95±2 km in good agreement with previous rocket soundings at mid‐latitudes. Two methods of triangulation were employed, both achieving similar results.

Determination Of Horizontal And Vertical Structure Of A Novel Pattern Of Short Period Gravity Waves Imaged During Aloha-93, Michael J. Taylor, D. C. Fritts, J. R. Isler

All Physics Faculty Publications

An all‐sky CCD imager has been used to measure the properties of short period gravity waves present over the Hawaiian Islands during the ALOHA‐93 campaign. Observations of emissions from four different altitudes provided a capability to describe the vertical as well as the horizontal structure of the wave field. On several occasions during this campaign an unusual morphology wave pattern was detected that consisted of a group of small‐scale waves oriented in the same direction. These were most noticeable in the OI (557.7 nm) emission, altitude ∼96 km, and were usually observed in association with a larger scale gravity wave. …

Spectrometric And Imaging Measurements Of A Spectacular Gravity Wave Event Observed During The Aloha-93 Campaign, Michael J. Taylor, D. N. Turnbull, R. P. Lowe

All Physics Faculty Publications

During the ALOHA‐93 campaign coincident imaging and interferometric measurements of the near infrared and visible wavelength nightglow emissions were made from Haleakala Crater, Maui. On 10 October, 1993 a most unusual wave event was observed. This disturbance appeared as a sharp “front” followed by several conspicuous wave crests which progressed rapidly through the imager's field of view (180°). As the front passed overhead the interferometer detected a sudden jump in both the OH intensity (>50%) and its rotational temperature (∼20 K) with the temperature increase leading the intensity by almost 15 min. At the same time the imager registered …

All-Sky Measurements Of Short Period Waves Imaged In The Oi (557.7 Nm), Na(589.2 Nm) And Near Infrared Oh And O2(0,1) Nightglow Emissions During The Aloha-93 Campaign, Michael J. Taylor, M. B. Bishop, V. Taylor Oct 1995

All-Sky Measurements Of Short Period Waves Imaged In The Oi (557.7 Nm), Na(589.2 Nm) And Near Infrared Oh And O2(0,1) Nightglow Emissions During The Aloha-93 Campaign, Michael J. Taylor, M. B. Bishop, V. Taylor

All Physics Faculty Publications

As part of the ALOHA‐93 campaign a high performance all‐sky CCD imaging system was operated at Haleakala Crater, Maui, to obtain novel information on the properties and sources of short period gravity waves over an extended height range ∼80–100 km. Sequential observations of the near infrared OH and O2(0,1) bands and the visible wavelength OI(557.7 nm) and Na(589.2 nm) line emissions have enabled a unique comparison of the morphology and dynamics of the wave motions and their occurrence frequency at each emission altitude to be made. Two major findings are: (a) the detection of significantly higher amounts of wave structure …
