Severe Drought In Italy: Characteristics, Impacts, And Mitigation Strategies, Giuseppe Rossi, Francesca Somma Oct 1995

Severe Drought In Italy: Characteristics, Impacts, And Mitigation Strategies, Giuseppe Rossi, Francesca Somma

Drought Network News (1994-2001)

Following the severe drought event that occurred in Italy in 1988–90, the Italian Department of Civil Protection published a report, Drought in Italy 1988–90 (in Italian; edited by G. Rossi and G. Margaritora), containing a comprehensive description of the drought event, its impacts, and the mitigation measures adopted in the most affected regions.

Since the beginning of the drought, the Department promoted and coordinated a number of initiatives, aiming mainly to mitigate domestic and agricultural water shortages. The Department also formed a drought committee, which included representatives of various government agencies (in charge of hydrometeorological data collection and water supply …

Long-Range Forecasts Of Southwest Monsoon Rainfall Explored For India, J. B. Singh, R. P. Singh Oct 1995

Long-Range Forecasts Of Southwest Monsoon Rainfall Explored For India, J. B. Singh, R. P. Singh

Drought Network News (1994-2001)

Southwest monsoon rainfall (received during June–September) determines the fate of millions of dryland farmers as well as the status of national food security in India almost every year. The need for information about southwest monsoon rainfall is great in these areas. An accurate long-range forecast can help farmers increase agricultural productivity in good rainfall years and negate the sudden downturns in agricultural production during anticipated drought years by giving farmers sufficient time to adopt drought-resistant crop varieties and appropriate crop, soil, and water management practices. The India Meteorological Department is now able to make all-India long-range forecasts of southwest monsoon …

Features And Origin Of The Koçkale-Elaziğ Manganese Mineralizations, Mehmet Altunbey, Ahmet Sağiroğlu

Bulletin of the Mineral Research and Exploration

Koçkale and its vicinity (Elazığ) is composed of four different units. These are; Upper Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous Guleman Group, Campanian-Maastrichtian Yüksekova Complex, Maastrichtian-Lower Eocene Hazar Group and Middle Eocene Maden Complex. The Mn mineralizations of Koçkale are situated in volcanosedmentary rocks of Maden Complex and occur in two types: (1) The mineralizations conformable with volcanosedimentary rocks, are the syngenetic and volcanosedimentary type. This type of mineralizations occur within mudstone and as a constituent of this unit, The mineralized bodies are tense and stratiform shaped. Any alteration related to mineralization is absent. Ore mineral assemblage is pyrolusite, psilomelane, rodokrosite, brauntte, manganite, limonite, …

Variation In Lightness Of White Oak Dimension Stock, Douglas D. Stokke, Anton D. Pugel, John E. Phelps Oct 1995

Variation In Lightness Of White Oak Dimension Stock, Douglas D. Stokke, Anton D. Pugel, John E. Phelps

Douglas D. Stokke

The objectives of this research were to generate a set of sample parameters for the lightness of planed white oak dimension stock, to investigate the effect of grain angle on lightness values, and to determine the level of sampling needed to color match white oak dimension stock on the basis of lightness or darkness as quantified by the parameter L* (psychometric lightness). This information is important when used to determine the feasibility of low-cost portable instruments for evaluating color in an edge-glued hardwood panel production setting. Color measurements were obtained with a portable spectrophotometer interfaced with a notebook computer. The …

Extended Molecular Gas Distribution In Mrk 273 And Merger-Luminosity Evolution, Min S. Yun, N Z. Scoville Oct 1995

Extended Molecular Gas Distribution In Mrk 273 And Merger-Luminosity Evolution, Min S. Yun, N Z. Scoville

Min S. Yun

We present the first interferometric measurement of CO emission (θ ~ 2'') from the ultraluminous infrared galaxy Mrk 273. A total H2 mass of 3.6 × 1010 Msun is inferred from the CO observations, half of which belongs to an extended component with deconvolved size 5.1 × 2.5 kpc. In addition, an unresolved molecular gas complex is found to be coincident with the optical nucleus. The inferred H2 mass, size (R ~ 380 pc), and mean surface mass density (ΣH2 ≥ 4 × 104 Msun pc-3) of this complex, as well as the IR luminosity, are very similar to those …
