An acid-base chemical mechanism is proposed for Hafnia alvei aspartase in which a proton is abstracted from C-3 of the monoanionic form of L-aspartate by an enzyme general base with a pK of 6.3-6.6 in the absence and presence of Mg2+. The resulting carbanion is presumably stabilized by delocalization of electrons into the β-carboxyl with the assistance of a protonated enzyme group in the vicinity of the β-carboxyl. Ammonia is then expelled with the assistance of a general acid group that traps an initially expelled NH3 as the final NH+4 product. In agreement with the function of the general acid …

The feasibility of population inversion is studied for the SiGe/Si system and compared with that of GaAs/AlGaAs. Because of the absence of strong polar optical phonon scattering in SiGe/Si, the lifetime difference of the upper and lower lasing levels, to which the population inversion and laser gain are proportional, is consistently an order of magnitude larger than that of GaAs/AlGaAs; nor does it show the sudden drop to zero or negative values when the lasing energy exceeds the optical phonon energy. Both systems studied are superlattices, each period of which consists of three coupled quantum wells and barriers.

We observed the generation of subharmonics and chaos in a nanometer-sized mechanical contact. To first order, the behavior matches that of macroscopic systems, with some intriguing secondary differences. As the occurrence of periodic behavior (subharmonics) is related to the coefficient of restitution, it may be possible to image local energy dissipation with nanometer resolution.

Total soil-mercury and phosphorus concentrations were determined in 64 sites in the southern half of Water Conservation Area 3A, an area of approximately 500 km² . Surface soil-Hg concentrations ranged from 117 to 300 ng-g^-1;
total phosphorus concentrations range from 350 to 850 pg~g^-1. No consistent north-south or east-west trends are found in the mercury or phosphorus surface concentrations when they are normalized to soil bulk density. Nine sites were used for the determination of the vertical distribution of soilmercury. Vertical profiles of soil-Hg revealed decreasing concentrations with depth and correlated well with phosphorus in …

Spin-resolved core-level photoemission data from the 3p level of ultrathin Fe films [1.4–5.1 monolayers (ML)] epitaxially grown on W(110) have been obtained. A nonlinear least-squares analysis, based on a one-particle Hamiltonian that simultaneously includes core-valence exchange and core-hole spin-orbit interactions, is developed. It is first tested on Fe 2p magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) photoemission spectra and shown to successfully describe the MCD asymmetry data. The model is then used to analyze our thin-film 3p data. With increasing film thickness the spin-orbit splitting (0.67±0.02 eV) remains constant (as expected), the exchange splitting increases from 0±0.12 eV to 0.41±0.05 eV, the average …

Radon, a naturally occurring radioactive gas produced as one of the decay products of soil/rock uranium and thorium, is considered to be a leading cause of pulmonary disease. Gamma spectrometry of 146 samples of soil were used to quantify radon source potential relative to lithology by measuring Bi²¹⁴ activity of the U²³⁸ decay series. Additional soil radio nuclide data (Th²³², Ac²²⁸, K40 and C¹³⁷ ) were used to help identify regional source provenance geochemistry and soil development. The sun is a bountiful source of energy for our planet. .With the advent of photovoltaic cells, man has begun harnessing the sun's radiant energy, turning it into a form more directly useful: electricity. Commercially available solar cells currently operate at about 13% efficiency, sufficiently high to make them a viable source of electrical energy. The results of two independent experiments in the vicinity of the “transition” from the third blue phase (BPIII) to isotropic phase (I) are reported for a highly chiral liquid crystal. Heat capacity measurements using a high-resolution calorimeter and dynamic light-scattering measurements using circularly polarized light have been performed. The data show a continuous evolution of BPIII into I with no critical fluctuations. This is strong evidence that the BPIII-I transition in this compound is supercritical, indicating that the BPIII and I phases possess the same macroscopic symmetry.
