Landscape Evolution Of The Dry Valleys, Transantarctic Mountains: Tectonic Implications, David E. Sugden, George H. Denton, David R. Marchant

Earth Science Faculty Scholarship

There are different views about the amount and timing of surface uplift in the Transantarctic Mountains and the geophysical mechanisms involved. Our new interpretation of the landscape evolution and tectonic history of the Dry Valleys area of the Transantarctic Mountains is based on geomorphic mapping of an area of 10,000 km(2). The landforms are dated mainly by their association with volcanic ashes and glaciomarine deposits and this permits a reconstruction of the stages and timing of landscape evolution. Following a lowering of base level about 55 m.y. ago, there was a phase of rapid denudation associated with planation and escarpment …

Modeling Of Decay Rate For Molecules At An Island Surface, Ting Xiong Jun 1995

Modeling Of Decay Rate For Molecules At An Island Surface, Ting Xiong

Dissertations and Theses

The decay rates for molecules at rough surfaces are studied via an island surface model, with particular emphasis on the effect due to the distribution of surface roughness. Two extreme cases are studied when the surface islands distribute themselves evenly and when they coalesce to form local clusters at the molecule-substrate interface. The optical properties of the interfacial layer in these two cases are described by the Maxwell-Garnett and the fractal-cluster models, respectively. Among other results, it is found that both enhancement and suppression of the surface-induced decay rates are possible due to the presence of roughness, with more dramatic …

Simulation Of A Video-On-Demand System, Song Bac Toh Jun 1995

Simulation Of A Video-On-Demand System, Song Bac Toh

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

This paper presents a simulation study of a video-on-demand system. The focus of the study is the effectiveness of different caching strategies on a video-on-demand system with two levels of cache, RAM and disks, in front of a tape library. Using an event-driven simulator, I show that caching was helpful in increasing the service capacity of the system. On-demand caching showed its advantages especially when the requests were clustered around a few popular titles (in other words, there was temporal locality).

Tias: A Transportable Intelligent Agent System, Kenneth Harker Jun 1995

Tias: A Transportable Intelligent Agent System, Kenneth Harker

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

In recent years, there has been an explosive growth in the amount of information available to our society. In particular, the amount of information available on-line through vast networks like the global Internet has been growing at a staggering rate. This growth rate has by far exceeded the rate of growth in network speeds, as has the number of individuals and organizations seeking access to this information. There is thus a motivation to find abstract methods of manipulating this on-line data in ways that both serve the needs of end users efficiently and use network resources intelligently. In lieu of …

Molecular Hydrogen Formation On Astrophysically Relevant Surfaces, Gianfranco Vidali, N. Katz, Itay Furman, Ofer Biham, Valerio Pirronello Jun 1995

Molecular Hydrogen Formation On Astrophysically Relevant Surfaces, Gianfranco Vidali, N. Katz, Itay Furman, Ofer Biham, Valerio Pirronello

Physics - All Scholarship

Recent experimental results about the formation of molecular hydrogen on astrophysically relevant surfaces under conditions close to those encountered in the interstellar medium are analyzed using rate equations. The parameters of the rate equation model are fitted to temperature-programmed desorption curves obtained in the laboratory. These parameters are the activation energy barriers for atomic hydrogen diffusion and desorption, the barrier for molecular hydrogen desorption, and the probability of spontaneous desorption of a hydrogen molecule upon recombination. The model is a generalization of the Polanyi-Wigner equation and provides a description of both first and second order kinetic processes within a single …

Mathematical And Theological Beliefs: A Cognitive Science Perspective, Ron Benbow Jun 1995

Mathematical And Theological Beliefs: A Cognitive Science Perspective, Ron Benbow

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1995

In recent years, research studies have shown that control decisions and processes, beliefs about the nature of mathematics, attitudes, and other affective variables have enormous impact on the mathematical performance of students. This paper gives an overview of the research on mathematical beliefs and reviews some work done in Christian education relating to theological beliefs. It then compares the two.

Using Data To Develop Mathematical Methods, Philip R. Carlson Jun 1995

Using Data To Develop Mathematical Methods, Philip R. Carlson

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1995

An analysis of ordered pairs and their scatter plots leads to interesting questions related to mathematical modeling. Some statistical methods suggest ways to approach this analysis of the ordered pairs. Both high school and college methods are illustrated in this paper.

The Intermediate Value Theorem, Dale Varberg Jun 1995

The Intermediate Value Theorem, Dale Varberg

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1995

The Intermediate Value Theorem (a continuous function on an interval assumes all values between any two of its values) is one of the big theorems of calculus. Yet the theorem is absent or briefly mentioned in most calculus textbooks. The theorem deserves better as we intend to show by listing ten picturesque consequences that we think could enliven any calculus course.

What Does A Computer Program Mean? An Introduction To Denotational Semantics, Gene B. Chase Jun 1995

What Does A Computer Program Mean? An Introduction To Denotational Semantics, Gene B. Chase

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1995

This paper is for mathematicians who are curious about how topology is being used to prove computer programs correct. Those advanced parts have been limited to Sections III, V, and VI, and they are marked by a [clock symbol]. By contrast, sections II, IV, and VII are suitable as a companion to existing textbooks in a Computer Science course such as Organization of Programming Languages, the course CS 8 as described in Curriculum [1979]. Perhaps in a first reading you might read just those sections.

Among many books and articles on the semantics, or meaning, of computer languages, …

Statistics, Mathematics, And Teaching, David S. Moore Jun 1995

Statistics, Mathematics, And Teaching, David S. Moore

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1995

In discussing our teaching, we may focus on content, what we want our students to learn, or on pedagogy, what we do to help them learn. These two topics are of course related. In particular, changes in pedagogy are often driven in part by changing priorities for what kinds of things we want students to learn. It is nonetheless convenient to address content and pedagogy separately. Pedagogy, certainly the less specific of the two, is the topic of my second paper. This paper concerns content, and in particular contains one side of a conversation between a statistician and mathematicians …

Experimenting With The Calculus Laboratory Setting, Glen Van Brummelen Jun 1995

Experimenting With The Calculus Laboratory Setting, Glen Van Brummelen

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1995

Reform of post-secondary mathematics education, particularly introductory calculus, is becoming commonplace across North America. Although there are many varieties of reform, most can be placed within the philosophical camp of social constructivism. According to this movement, mathematical knowledge is constructed in an interactive way through instructor-student and inter-student dialogue, rather than built in an axiomatic sense such as the "new math" of 20 years ago, or in the reductionistic, algorithmic sense dominant in secondary and introductory college mathematics. While I hold serious concerns about the relativizing of mathematical knowledge that occurs when social constructivism is adopted as a philosophy of …

On The Miracle Of The Multiplication Of The Loaves And Fishes, Andrew Simoson Jun 1995

On The Miracle Of The Multiplication Of The Loaves And Fishes, Andrew Simoson

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1995

With respect to Jesus’s miracle described in Matthew 14: 15–21, we give whimsical arguments for generating more from what appears to be present—using ideas of set and measure theory and show how to partition the unit interval into two disjoint sets each of whose outer measures is unity; and we go on to discuss the Banach-Tarski paradox showing how to partition the unit sphere into two unit spheres. Note: I do not hold copyrights to Figures 1 and 4.

Improving The Teaching Of Mathematics, David S. Moore Jun 1995

Improving The Teaching Of Mathematics, David S. Moore

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1995

No one concerned about the teaching of college mathematics--and few mathematicians who are not concerned--can have missed the movement to reform teaching in the mathematical sciences at all levels. The teaching of any active branch of knowledge, like the church, is of course "reforming and ever to be reformed." Calls to modernize what we offer students are always with us. What is striking about the current reform movement is not only its momentum but the fact that it centers on pedagogy rather than on content. We ought, say the reformers, to radically alter our style of teaching. My purpose in …

Worsening Drought Conditions Affect Relay Cropping In Central India, J. L. Chaudhary, A. S. R. A. S. Sastri, D. Naidu, S. K. Srivastava

Drought Network News (1994-2001)

In the Chhattisgarh region of central India (Figure 1), rice is grown on about 3.7 million ha, of which 80% is under rainfed conditions. The rice crop is grown mostly under the broadcast biasi system of cultivation (see Drought Network News, Vol. 5, No. 3 [October 1993], pp. 6–7). The rainy season is the southwest monsoon (June–September) season. Farmers grow traditional local tall varieties of rice, which flower in mid-October and mature by mid- November.

Coping With Exceptional Droughts In Australia, David H. White, Bruce O'Meagher Jun 1995

Coping With Exceptional Droughts In Australia, David H. White, Bruce O'Meagher

Drought Network News (1994-2001)

The objectives of Australia’s National Drought Policy (NDP), agreed to by Commonwealth (national), state, and territory ministers in 1992, are to:

• encourage primary producers and other sections of rural Australia to adopt self-reliant approaches to managing the risks stemming from climatic variability;
• maintain and protect Australia’s agricultural and environmental resource base during periods of extreme climate stress; and
• ensure early recovery of agricultural and rural industries consistent with long-term sustainable levels.

Under the NDP, Australian farmers are expected to assume greater responsibility for managing the risks arising from climatic variability. This requires integrating financial and business management …

El Niño’S Effect On Southwest Monsoon Rainfall In Andhra Pradesh, India, U. S. Victor, N. N. Srivastava, A. V. M. Subba Rao, B. V. Ramana Rao

Drought Network News (1994-2001)

India is primarily an agricultural country, despite making rapid strides in industrialization in recent decades. The Indian economy is therefore highly dependent on the behavior of the summer monsoon, also known as the southwest monsoon, which occurs during four months (June–September). This accounts for 75% of the annual rainfall over most parts of the country and also generates great demand for rainfall forecasts in different time scales. For nearly a century, Indian meteorologists have been attempting to develop suitable techniques that could be used for preparing long-range forecasts of monsoon rains over India. Walker (1923) has done pioneering work in …

Adjacencies In Words, Jean-Marc Fedou, Don Rawlings

Mathematics

Based on two inversion formulas for enumerating words in the free monoid by adjacencies, we present a new approach to a class of permutation problems having Eulerian-type generating functions. We also show that a specialization of one of the inversion formulas gives Diekert's lifting to the free monoid of an inversion theorem due to Cartier and Foata.

Vibrational Properties Of A Loaded String, Samantha Parmley, Tom Zobrist, Terry Clough, Anthony Perez-Miller, Mark Makela

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

In this paper we discuss our study of a string–mass chain and its anology to quantum mechanical systems. Theoretical predictions are made based upon the numerical solution to the wave equation. These predictions are tested experimentally using both normal mode analysis and pulse analysis. The frequency band structures for periodic and disordered string mass chains are studied as well as their corresponding eigenfunctions. The theoretical and experimental results are in accord. This experiment, suitable for advanced physics majors, demonstrates many important features of quantum mechanics: eigenvalues, superposition principle, band structure, gap modes, and Anderson localization.

Scaling Of Thin-Film Nd1.85ce0.15cuo4-Y Resistivity-Current Isotherms At Low Fields: Implications For Vortex Phase Transitions And Universality, Brandon R. Brown Jun 1995

Scaling Of Thin-Film Nd1.85ce0.15cuo4-Y Resistivity-Current Isotherms At Low Fields: Implications For Vortex Phase Transitions And Universality, Brandon R. Brown

Physics and Astronomy

We have investigated a second-order phase transition of the vortex lattice in thin-film Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4-y from 1 mT to 1 T applied magnetic fields. The dc resistivity-current density data for each field exhibit critical scaling consistent with a second-order vortex-liquid to vortex-solid phase transition. The high-field data support the vortex-glass model and have the same critical exponents as thin-film YBa2Cu3O7-δ. At low fields we observe a change in the critical exponents and universal functions. The critical regime diminishes as the field is decreased but remains nonzero even at 1 mT. …

Electron Transport In Magnetic Inhomogeneous Media, Horacio E. Camblong Jun 1995

Electron Transport In Magnetic Inhomogeneous Media, Horacio E. Camblong

Physics and Astronomy

Giant magnetoresistance has been observed in both magnetic multilayers and magnetic granular solids. We develop a framework for unifying these particular realizations of inhomogeneous magnetic media, based on the real-space Kubo formula. It constitutes a spin-dependent form of linear response theory, associated with internal spin-dependent fields arising from spin accumulation; moreover, we discuss the physical meaning of these spin dependences. For magnetic multilayers we discuss the particular cases of collinear and noncollinear configurations, and we consider limiting cases of the elastic mean-free path to inhomogeneity-scale ratio for granular solids. Furthermore, we introduce the concept of magnetically self-averaging systems, which include …
