Low doses of radiation are frequently inferred to mean doses of the order of 10-100 mGy, regardless of the end point or the nature of the irradiation, as if the energy were deposited uniformly through all targets. Yet, the fluence in a charged particle beam at which there is an average of 1 charged particle transit per target leaves 37% of the targets untouched. At an average of 3 transits per target, 5% of the targets experience no particle transits. Only at an average of 5 transits per target do 99% of the targets achieve one or more transits. One …

The paper presents the implementation of air pollution monitoring in the province of Kielce (Poland), associated with verification of the location and the measuring range of points to measure the concentrations of air pollutants. For this purpose were used calculations of the pollutants dispersion and statistical analysis of measurement results obtained on existing measuring stations. In the statistical calculations were used analysis of variance homogeneity, based on Cochran, Bartlett and Hartley tests. As a result of analysis and calculations, it was found that the original location is not always correct and does not reflect the spatial differentiation of pollutant concentrations. …

Molecular ionization and ionic fragmentation of core excited CO valence and Rydberg states are studied by partial-ion-yield spectroscopy at vibrational resolution. The vibrational intensities of the Rydberg excitations differ significantly depending on the ionization and/or fragmentation channel. The observed intensity variations are explained by nondissociative excited final ionic states of the subsequent molecular Auger decay. The vibrational levels of these final states become selectively depopulated due to interaction with dissociative decay channels leading to ionic fragmentation.

Reduced-velocity correlation functions between two and three intermediate mass fragments are compared for central Ar36+197Ar collisions at E/A=50 MeV. Previously published N-body Coulomb-trajectory calculations, capable of reproducing the measured two-fragment reduced velocity-correlation function, describe the measured three-fragment correlation function equally well. Moreover, ambiguities between source size and lifetime observed in the analysis of two-fragment correlations remain unresolved in the three-fragment correlation function.

The chromospherically active single star HD 181943 was previously proposed as either a pre-main-sequence star seen pole-on or a post-main-sequence subgiant that evolved from an Ap star similar to 53 Cam. It also was found to be a variable star with a 385 day period. We have used new spectroscopic and photometric observations to reevaluate the properties and evolutionary state of this unusual system. We conclude that HD 181943 is a single K1 V star that has recently arrived on the ZAMS. Its emission line fluxes are nearly identical to those of HD 82558= LQ Hya, while its log lithium …

Phonon replicas in the photoluminescence spectra of a direct gap AlxGa1−xAs alloy have been observed. The GaAs‐like transverse optical and longitudinal optical as well as AlAs‐like longitudinal optical modes were observed at the Γ‐point. We also observe what we believe to be the longitudinal acoustical phonons at the L‐point in the Brillouin zone.

CCPO Publications
Previous studies by Greatbatch et al. (1991) indicate significant changes in the North Atlantic thermohaline structure and circulation between the pentads 1955–1959 and 1970–1974, using data analyzed by Levitus (1989a,b,c) and a simple diagnostic model by Mellor et al. (1982). In this paper these changes are modeled using a three-dimensional, free surface, coastal ocean model. Diagnostic and short-term prognostic calculations are used to infer the dynamically adjusted fields corresponding to the observed hydrographic and wind stress climatology of each pentad. While the results agree with earlier studies indicating that the Gulf Stream was considerably weaker (by about 30 Sv) during …

Present Risk, Future Risk Or No Risk - Measuring And Predicting Perceptions Of Health Risks Of A Hazardous Waste Landfill, William K. Hallman, Abraham H. Wandersman
RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)
Given that perceived risk is multidimensional, the authors seek better understanding by focusing on health risks and, more particularly, on their temporality. In this way, they attempt to measure more meaningfully psychological influences on risk perceptions.
Fluorescence Studies Of Cyclodextrin Polymers: A Study Of The Binding Of Various Fluorescence Probes To Cyclodextrin Polymers, Karen Ann Colwell
Fluorescence Studies Of Cyclodextrin Polymers: A Study Of The Binding Of Various Fluorescence Probes To Cyclodextrin Polymers, Karen Ann Colwell
Honors Theses
Cyclodextrins (CDs) are cyclical oligosaccarides which exist as 6, 7, or 8 glucopyranose units joined by α-1,4 linkages, referred to as α, β, and γ CDs, respectively. Their structure resembles that of a truncated cone in which the interior cavity is hydrophobic while the exterior remains hydrophilic. This allows CDs to form inclusion complexes with nonpolar molecules in an aqueous environment. Polymerization of CDs (CDPs) has been carried out using epichlorohydrin which connects the CD cavities by an average of 12-15 repeating glyceryl linker units. The binding of various fluorescence probes to CD monomers has been studied. In particular, pyrene …
Influence Of Salt Bridge Formation On Helix Stability, Angelo Carmine Nicoletta
Influence Of Salt Bridge Formation On Helix Stability, Angelo Carmine Nicoletta
Honors Theses
One of the most common structural elements in proteins is the a-helix. The main goal of this study was to see If the helical properties of short peptide chains could be increased by the formation of salt bridges between side chains. It has been shown that i,i+4 peptides posses helic; I characier. The research that has been done was to make a hybrid peptide chain, that had partial i,i+4 and partial i,i+3 salt bridge formation. The hybrid peptide was a i+4, i+3, i+4 peptide chain. The overall purpose of making this type of hybrid peptide was to make the approximate …

Applications Of A Diode-Laser-Based Detector To On-Line Determinations Involving Methylene Blue, Michelle Ann Spaziani
Honors Theses
The application of an inexpensive diode-laser-based detector for flow injection analysis (FIA), and the on-line determination of sulfide using the "Methylene Blue (MB) Method" is presented. The detector is designed for simultaneous measurements of transmittance and fluorescence. A 670-nm diode laser is the excitation source; photodiodes serve as detector elements. The flow cell is constructed of a piece of square-cross-section quartz capillary tubing. The MB Method employs N, N-dimethyl-p-phenylenediamine (DMPD), iron III, and sodium sulfide reacting to form MB; a triple-line flow-injection manifold is used. Performed previously using conventional UV-Vis instrumentation, optimized conditions included one reagent dissolved in 9 M …

Studies Toward A Chiral, Charge Separated, Water Soluble Cyclophane, Danuta Trzebinska-Yager
Honors Theses
It has been suggested that the key issue in the structure-function correlation in enzyme catalysis is electrostatic stabilization of the ionic transition states. In order to mimic receptors in biological systems we designed a novel hydrophilic macrocycle, 10, with an electrostatic dipole across its hydrophobic cavity. The dipole moment would be established between a positively charged Fe(II)-terpyridyl complex on one end of the macrocycle and the two carboxylate substituents at the opposite end of the receptor. An experimental strategy based on a convergent synthesis is presented.
