A Search For Optical Flares In Chromospherically Active Stars, Gregory W. Henry, M. S. Newsom

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We have surveyed four years of archival UBV photometry of 69 chromospherically active stars obtained with the Phoenix-10 automatic photoelectric telescope in search of optical flares on these stars. We demonstrate taht, while flares can be detected in these data, the number of events observed on evolved stars remains very small. Flares were found only on UX Arietis, II Pegasi, and AR Piscium.

Efficacy Of Herbicide Application Methods Used To Control Tanoak (Lithocarpus Densiflorus) In An Uneven-Aged Coast Redwood Management Context, Douglas D. Piirto, Brenda Smith, Eric K. Huff, Scott T. Robinson

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences

Three methods of tanoak (Lithocarpus densiflorus [Hook. & Arn.] Rehd.) control involving the application of the amine or ester form of triclopyr were evaluated in this coast redwood uneven-aged forest management study of herbicides. A cut-stump application with the amine form of triclopyr (Garlon 3A), frill cut with the amine form of triclopyr, basal-bark (outer surface) with the ester form of triclopyr (Garlon 4), and an untreated control were replicated three times. The tanoak control results in Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii [Mirb.] Franco) and/ or coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens [D. Don] Endl.) predominated stands obtained in earlier studies …

Long-Range Order And Magnetic Properties Of MnXPt1 – X Thin Films, Kurt W. Wierman, Roger D. Kirby

Roger Kirby Publications

Thin films of MnxPt1–x (x = 0.18, 0.22, 0.25, 0.30, 0.34) were prepared by magnetron sputtering onto quartz substrates. After annealing in vacuum for 1 h at 850°C, X-ray diffraction indicates that the films have the Cu3Au cubic structure (a = 3.87 Å) and are highly textured with the (111) axis along the film normal. These samples have a high degree of long-range order, as indicated by the ratio of the intensities of the superlattice (100) and fundamental (200) X-ray diffraction reflections. We report here the results of magnetic and magnetooptical measurements …

Optical Electron Polarimetry With Heavy Noble Gases, Timothy J. Gay, J. E. Furst, K. W. Trantham, W. M. K. P. Wijayaratna

Timothy J. Gay Publications

We have measured the polarization of fluorescence emitted by the noble gases He, Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe following impact excitation by polarized electrons. In He, the 33P→23S transition was studied; in the heavy noble gases the np5 (n+1) p 3D3np5 (n+1) s3P2 transitions were analyzed. We investigated these transitions as candidates for efficient optical electron polarimetry and found that, because of their larger excitation cross sections and analyzing power, the heavy noble gases are superior to He, which had been used …

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The magnetic properties of a series of Ce2Fe17-xAlx solid solutions with x equal to 0.00, 0.88, 2.06, 2.81, 3.98, 5.15, 6.08, 7.21, 8.20, 9.08, 9.84, and 10.62 have been studied by magnetic measurements, neutron diffraction, and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The compounds crystallize in the rhombohedral Th2Zn17-type structure. Magnetization studies indicate that the Curie temperature increases uniformly from 238 K for Ce2Fe17 to 384 K for Ce2Fe14Al3 and then decreases at higher aluminum content. Powder neutron diffraction results, obtained at 295 K, indicate that aluminum …

New Mathematical Properties Of The Least Square Value, Irinel Dragan Mar 1996

New Mathematical Properties Of The Least Square Value, Irinel Dragan

Mathematics Technical Papers

The Least Square Values for cooperative TU games (briefly, LS-values) represent a family of solutions of the following family of optimization problems associated with a cooperative TU game: minimize the sum of weighted squares of deviations of the excesses from their average, on the preimputation set; the weights were positive numbers associated to the coalitions, depending only on their size. For each system of weights a LS-value is obtained by the Lagrange multipliers method; the Shapley value belongs to the family for specified weights. L. Ruiz, F. Valenciano and J. Zarzuelo who introduced this class of values (see[9]), gave two …

Association Between Nutrient Intake And Risk Of Coronary Heart Disease In California Seventh-Day Adventists, Peter Pribiš Mar 1996

Association Between Nutrient Intake And Risk Of Coronary Heart Disease In California Seventh-Day Adventists, Peter Pribiš

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Dietary habits are believed to be major determinants of risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). Studies of high and low risk populations have suggested several nutrients to be protective or hazardous against CHD. Most published work since 1984 on diet and CHD in the Adventist Health Study (AHS) population examined either foods or food groups. This study investigated ten nutrients as exposure variables and their relationship to CHD risk. A cohort of 23,616 nonsmoking, non-Hispanic white California Seventh-day Adventists was followed for six years beginning in 1976. Extensive dietary information was collected at baseline, as well as values of traditional …

Stochastic Approximation Methods For Systems Over An Infinite Horizon, Harold J. Kushner, Felisa Vázquez-Abad Mar 1996

Stochastic Approximation Methods For Systems Over An Infinite Horizon, Harold J. Kushner, Felisa Vázquez-Abad

Publications and Research

The paper develops efficient and general stochastic approximation (SA) methods for improving the operation of parametrized systems of either the continuous- or discrete-event dynamical systems types and which are of interest over a long time period. For example, one might wish to optimize or improve the stationary (or average cost per unit time) performance by adjusting the systems parameters. The number of applications and the associated literature are increasing at a rapid rate. This is partly due to the increasing activity in computing pathwise derivatives and adapting them to the average-cost problem. Although the original motivation and the examples come …

Chemical Wave Propagation In Hele-Shaw Cells And Porous Media, D. A. Vasquez, J. W. Wilder, Boyd F. Edwards Mar 1996

Chemical Wave Propagation In Hele-Shaw Cells And Porous Media, D. A. Vasquez, J. W. Wilder, Boyd F. Edwards

All Physics Faculty Publications

Chemical waves induce density gradients in fluids which may lead to convection. This paper studies the convective effects on chemical waves propagating in porous media or in fluids confined between two parallel vertical walls. Chemical waves in the iodate–arsenous acid system are modeled with a one variable reaction‐diffusion equation. The fluid flow is modeled using Darcy’s law. A linear stability analysis on convectionless fronts shows a transition to convection. The full nonlinear equations describing the convective front are solved numerically on a vertical slab. Convective fronts propagate faster than convectionless fronts. Near the onset of convection, the fronts are raised …

Using the isolation of Mycobacterium bovis as the reference standard, this study evaluated the sensitivity, specificity and kappa statistic of gross pathology (abattoir postmortem inspection), histopathology, and parallel or series combinations of the two for the diagnosis of tuberculosis in 430 elk and red deer. Two histopathology interpretations were evaluated: histopathology I, where the presence of lesions compatible with tuberculosis was considered positive, and histopathology II, where lesions compatible with tuberculosis or a select group of additional possible diagnoses were considered positive. In the 73 animals from which M. bovis was isolated, gross lesions of tuberculosis were most often in …

A Generic Intelligent Architecture For Computer-Aided Training Of Procedural Knowledge, Freeman A. Kilpatrick Jr. Mar 1996

A Generic Intelligent Architecture For Computer-Aided Training Of Procedural Knowledge, Freeman A. Kilpatrick Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) development is a knowledge-intensive task, suffering from the same knowledge acquisition bottleneck that plagues most Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems. This research presents an architecture that requires knowledge only in the form of a shallow knowledge base and a simulation to produce a training system. The knowledge base provides the basic procedural knowledge while the simulation provides context. The remainder of the knowledge required for training is learned through the interaction of these components in a state-space scenario exploration process and inductive machine learning. These knowledge components are used only at the interface level, allowing the internal …
