Speleogenesis In Gysum, Alexander Klimchouk Jan 1996

Speleogenesis In Gysum, Alexander Klimchouk

International Journal of Speleology

Satisfactory explanation of the origin and development of caves (speleogenesis) is a core problem of karst studies. Karst evolves as a circulation system, organised and interconnected through a conduit structure. Such a system may include superficial inputs and outputs, expressed as or related to karst landforms. However, there may be no such components if the system is represented entirely by conduits as in the case with deep-seated intrastratal karst. The main differences between speleogenesis in gypsum and in carbonate rocks lie in the chemistry and kinetics of their dissolution, in some of the lithological or structural peculiarities of the respective …

Hydrogeology Of Gypsum Formations, Alexander Klimchouk Jan 1996

Hydrogeology Of Gypsum Formations, Alexander Klimchouk

International Journal of Speleology

Detailed explanation of hydrogeological characteristics of gypsum aquifers is given in various situations: deep-seated karst-confined conditions, subjacent, entrenched and denuded karst types-semi-confined, phreatic and vadose conditions. The hydrogeological evolution of barren exposed gypsum karst and flow velocities in gypsum karst aquifers is also discussed.

Dynamics Of Poly(Vinyl Acetate) In Bulk And On Silica, Frank D. Blum, Gu Xu, Minghua Liang, Charles G. Wade Jan 1996

Dynamics Of Poly(Vinyl Acetate) In Bulk And On Silica, Frank D. Blum, Gu Xu, Minghua Liang, Charles G. Wade

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Quadrupole echo deuterium NMR has been used to probe the dynamics of poly(vinyl acetate-d3) in bulk and at saturation coverage (from toluene) on silica at the solid-air interface. In bulk and at lower temperatures, the deuterium powder pattern of the labeled methyl group was found to be consistent with fast threefold jumps with a small asymmetry due to the interaction of the methyl deuteron with the carbonyl oxygen. This apparent asymmetry was a result either of a distortion in the C-C-D bond angle or a reduction of the axial symmetry of the electric field gradient along the C-D bond vector. …

1,1′-Diacetyl-2,2′-Biimidazole, Paula M. Secondo, Colin A. Hester, Harvest L. Collier, Russell G. Baughman, A. W. Cordes

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

A crystallographic twofold rotation axis passes through the C-C bond joining the imidazole rings of the title compound, C10H10N4O2. the molecule crystallizes in a cis disposition. the planar acetyl group is twisted by 5.0 (3)° with respect to the imidazole ring and the two imidazole rings are tilted by 60.53 (5)° in relation to one another.

Ion Viscosity Mediated By Tangled Magnetic Fields: An Application To Black Hole Accretion Disks, P. Subramanian, P. A. Becker, Menas Kafatos

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We examine the viscosity associated with the shear stress exerted by ions in the presence of a tangled magnetic field. As an application, we consider the effect of this mechanism on the structure of black hole accretion disks. We do not attempt to include a self-consistent description of the magnetic field. Instead, we assume the existence of a tangled field with coherence length λcob• which is the average distance between the magnetic "kinks" that scatter the particles. For simplicity, we assume that the field is self-similar, and take λcob to be a fixed fraction ξ of the local disk height …

On Transitive And Fully Transitive Abelian P-Groups, D. Carroll, Brendan Goldsmith Jan 1996

On Transitive And Fully Transitive Abelian P-Groups, D. Carroll, Brendan Goldsmith

Articles

It is a long standing problem of A.L.S. Corner as to whether there exists a non-transitive fully transitive Abelian p-group with finite Ulm subgroups. The principal result of this paper shows that no such group exists for a special class of p-groups if the Ulm subjgroup is the direct sum of two cyclic groups. Some results on summands of trnsitive and fully transitive groups are obtained.

Quantum Version Of A Spherical Model: Crossover From Quantum To Classical Critical Behavior, Thomas Vojta Jan 1996

Quantum Version Of A Spherical Model: Crossover From Quantum To Classical Critical Behavior, Thomas Vojta

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We investigate a quantum version of the spherical model which is obtained from the classical Berlin-Kac spherical model by a simple canonical quantization scheme. We find a complete solution of the model for short-range as well as for long-range interactions. At finite temperatures the critical behavior is the same as in the classical spherical model whereas at zero temperature we find a quantum phase transition characterized by new critical exponents. Based on a functional-integral representation of the partition function the free energy of the model is shown to be equivalent to that of the nonlinear σ model in the limit …
