Curing A Summing Error That Occurs Automatically When Fitting A Function To Binomial Or Poisson Distributed Data, Edwin S. Braithwaite, Wilfred J. Braithwaite Jan 1996

Curing A Summing Error That Occurs Automatically When Fitting A Function To Binomial Or Poisson Distributed Data, Edwin S. Braithwaite, Wilfred J. Braithwaite

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Without special precautions a sum-rule error occurs automatically when a chi-squared procedure is used to fit a funtion to binomial or Poisson distributed histogram data if the function has at least one linear parameter. Since the square of the variance per channel is equal to the mean population, errors are usually approximated using (G2~=yi>0)}; this choice for approximating the variance gives a per-channel error weighting of 1/yi that automatically results in a sum-rule error. This sum-rule error consistently and systematically underestimates the total sum of the data points by an amount equal to the value of %*, resulting in …

The Role Of Epibenthic Predators In Structuring Marine Soft-Bottom Communities Along An Estuarine Gradient, Rochelle D. Seitz Jan 1996

The Role Of Epibenthic Predators In Structuring Marine Soft-Bottom Communities Along An Estuarine Gradient, Rochelle D. Seitz

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

A unifying theory of community regulation in soft-bottom systems remains elusive, despite extensive field studies on factors controlling community structure. Here, I have (1) reviewed models of community regulation, (2) examined the role of predation in controlling benthic diversity along a salinity gradient, (3) examined effects of predation upon an abundant bivalve, Macoma balthica, and (4) revised a model of community regulation in an estuarine soft-bottom system. The Menge and Sutherland (MS) "consumer stress model" posits that consumers feed ineffectively in harsh environments, and the importance of physical disturbance, competition and predation varies with recruitment, environmental conditions, and trophic position. …

Integrative Analysis Of Ecosystem Processes In The Littoral Zone Of Lower Chesapeake Bay: A Modeling Study Of The Goodwin Islands National Estuarine Research Reserve, Christopher P. Buzzelli Jan 1996

Integrative Analysis Of Ecosystem Processes In The Littoral Zone Of Lower Chesapeake Bay: A Modeling Study Of The Goodwin Islands National Estuarine Research Reserve, Christopher P. Buzzelli

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Approximately 40% of the bottom of Chesapeake Bay is less than 2.0 m in depth and many of these broad shoal environments are bordered by wetlands. The vegetated and nonvegetated subtidal and intertidal environment is a dynamic mosaic of highly productive estuarine habitats linked by the exchange of waterborne materials. This study developed simulation models of primary production and material exchange for four littoral zone habitats of the Goodwin Islands National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR) in lower Chesapeake Bay. Field studies were conducted to determine the sediment biogeochemical and biomass characteristics of sandy shoal, seagrass, silt-mud, and marsh habitats. Ecological …

Expression Of The Xenobiotic Transporter P-Glycoprotein In The Mummichog (Fundulus Heteroclitus), Peter S. Cooper Jan 1996

Expression Of The Xenobiotic Transporter P-Glycoprotein In The Mummichog (Fundulus Heteroclitus), Peter S. Cooper

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The mammalian mdr1 P-glycoprotein (Pgp) has been implicated in xenobiotic resistance of drug-resistant cell lines and tumors, and may function in excretion or exclusion of toxic xenobiotics at several sites within the body. Pgp gene family members are expressed in excretory epithelia of several aquatic taxa and may contribute to the survival of pollution-tolerant aquatic animals in contaminated environments. For this reason the expression of Pgp family members was investigated in the livers and liver tumors of creosote-resistant mummichog (Fundulus heteroclitus) inhabiting a creosote-contaminated site (Atlantic Wood) in the Elizabeth River, Virginia. Expression of members of the Pgp gene family …

Rotating Disk Ion Selective Electrodes, John Cassidy, David Mullen, Karen Casey, Patrick Cullen Jan 1996

Rotating Disk Ion Selective Electrodes, John Cassidy, David Mullen, Karen Casey, Patrick Cullen

Articles

A simulation was undertaken to predict the transient potential response following a concentration step at a rotating disk electrode comprised of an ion selective layer. A basis for this simulation was that the potential response would be independent of rotation rate since the diffusion layer is larger than the double layer at the electrode. In practice it was found that the potential response does vary with rotation rate. The response was such that the apparent concentration of the analyte in solution decreased with increased rotation rate. The reason for this behavior is due to the disruption of the double layer …

On (\Sigma,\Tau) Derivations With Module Values, M. Soytürk

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Let R be a ring, X\neq (0) an R-bi-module, d: R\ra X a(\sigma,\tau)- derivation with module value such that d\sigma=\sigma d, d\tau=\tau d and U\neq (0) an ideal of R. Furthermore the following properties are also satisfied. \begin{eqnarray*} && \mbox{For }x\in X, a\in R\quad x Ra=0 \mbox{ implies } x=0 \mbox{ or } a=0 \ldots\ldots (G_{1})\\ && \mbox{For }a\in R, x\in X \quad a Rx=0 \mbox{ implies } a=0 \mbox{ or } x=0 \ldots\ldots (G_{2}) \end{eqnarray*} \noindent In this paper we have proved the following results; (1) If (G_{1}) (or (G_{2})) is satisfied and for a \in R, d(U) a=0 …

Rex ' 96 : An Expert Guide To Revegetation, David Bicknell Jan 1996

Rex ' 96 : An Expert Guide To Revegetation, David Bicknell

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Agriculture Western Australia has provided coordination and technical input to a powerful source of information on plants for Australian conditions. David Bicknell outlines some of its features and uses.

Farmers, local government, advisers and even gardeners often have trouble finding the right plant for the right place for a given purpose. Rather than spend a lot of time, money and effort looking through scattered sources of information, many people stick with a limited number of species year after year. This neglects plants that may be much better suited to the purpose, and also fails to develop Australia's huge range of …

Abandon The Paddock : A Valid Method Of Rehabilitation?, Max Abensperg-Traun

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The scale of the revegetayion needed to combat land and habitat degradation can only be achieved over a long period of time. An alternative to revegitation is to abandon parts oof the farm for passive regeneration. Max Abensperg-Traun, and his colleagues from CSIRO Division of Wildlife and Ecology, report on some outomes from such a strategy.

A New High Pressure Sapphire Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Cell, Shi Bai, Craig M. Taylor, Charles L. Mayne, Ronald J. Pugmire, David M. Grant Jan 1996

A New High Pressure Sapphire Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Cell, Shi Bai, Craig M. Taylor, Charles L. Mayne, Ronald J. Pugmire, David M. Grant

Faculty Publications

A new version of a single-crystal sapphire high pressure nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) cell is described that is capable of controlling the sample pressure independent of the temperature. A movable piston inside the cell adjusts and controls the sample pressure from ambient conditions to 200 atm within plus or minus 0.3 atm. The linewidth at half-height for a 13C spectrum of carbon dioxide at 15degrees C and 57.8 atm is found to be 0.5 Hz. The carbon dioxide gas/liquid phase transition is clearly observed by measuring 13C chemical shifts as the sample pressure approaches equilibrium. The time required for this …

Detecting Trends And Patterns In Reliability Data Over Time Using Exponentially Weighted Moving-Averages, Harry F. Martz, Paul H. Kvam Jan 1996

Detecting Trends And Patterns In Reliability Data Over Time Using Exponentially Weighted Moving-Averages, Harry F. Martz, Paul H. Kvam

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

A simple, easy-to-use graphical method is presented for use in determining if there is any statistically significant trend or pattern over time in an underlying Poisson event rate of occurrence or binomial failure on demand probability. The method is based on the combined use of both an exponentially weighted moving-average (EWMA) and a Shewhart chart. Two nuclear power plant examples are introduced and used to illustrate the method. The false alarm probability and power when using the combined procedure are also determined for both cases using Monte Carlo simulation. The results indicate that the combined procedure is quite effective in …

Bergman Spaces On Disconnected Domains, William T. Ross, Alexandru Aleman, Stefan Richter Jan 1996

Bergman Spaces On Disconnected Domains, William T. Ross, Alexandru Aleman, Stefan Richter

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

For a bounded region G C C and a compact set K C G, with area measure zero, we will characterize the invariant subspaces M (under f -> zf)of the Bergman space Lpa(G \ K), 1 ≤ p < ∞, which contain Lpa(G) and with dim(M/(z - λ)M) = 1 for all λϵ G \ K. When G \ K is connected, we will see that di\m(M /(z — λ)M) = 1 for all λ ϵ G \ K and thus in this case we will have a complete …

Exponent Bounds For A Family Of Abelian Difference Sets, K. T. Arasu, James A. Davis, Jonathan Jedwab, Siu Lun Ma, Robert L. Mcfarland

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

Which groups G contain difference sets with the parameters (v, k, λ)= (q3 + 2q2 , q2 + q, q), where q is a power of a prime p? Constructions of K. Takeuchi, R.L. McFarland, and J.F. Dillon together yield difference sets with these parameters if G contains an elementary abelian group of order q2 in its center. A result of R.J. Turyn implies that if G is abelian and p is self-conjugate modulo the exponent of G, then a necessary condition for existence is that the exponent …

Inventory For Endangered, Threatened, And Rare Plant And Animal Species Within The Floodplain Corridor Of The Middle Loup River Basin, Nebraska Natural Heritage Program

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

In April 1996 the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission (NGPC) entered into agreement with the U. S. Department of the Interior Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) to conduct inventory work for endangered, threatened, and rare plant and animal species within the floodplain corridor of the Middle Loup River basin in Nebraska. This district includes the Farwell and Sargent Irrigation Districts. The impetus for such inventory work is the renewal of current water services contracts between BOR and irrigation districts that will expire in 1988. BOR has stated the need to balance the interests of the irrigation districts and their clients, with …
