Optical Electron Polarimetry With Heavy Noble Gases, Timothy James Gay, J. E. Furst, K. W. Trantham, W. M.K.P. Wijayaratna
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We have measured the polarization of fluorescence emitted by the noble gases He, Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe following impact excitation by polarized electrons. In He, the [Formula Presented]P→[Formula Presented]S transition was studied; in the heavy noble gases the [Formula Presented](n+1)p[Formula Presented]→[Formula Presented](n+1)s[Formula Presented] transitions were analyzed. We investigated these transitions as candidates for efficient optical electron polarimetry and found that, because of their larger excitation cross sections and analyzing power, the heavy noble gases are superior to He, which had been used previously as a polarimetric target. Several issues with regard to the implementation and accuracy of optical electron …

An Assessment Of Asynchronous Transfer Mode (Atm) Training For Educators, Dan A. Niswander
CCE Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this dissertation was to develop and evaluate a hypertext-based training tutorial/guide on asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) technology for use by school district educators and technology planners. A review of literature indicated training needs on new broadband technologies were not being adequately met from the point of view of an educational environment. An interactive hypertext solution was proposed, designed, and developed based on the needs of adult learners. An analysis of these needs indicated adults prefer flexibility in navigating between training topics as well as in the pace of material presentation, that is, whether to proceed at a …

Highly Reactive Zerovalent Metals From Metal Cyanides, Reuben D. Rieke
Highly Reactive Zerovalent Metals From Metal Cyanides, Reuben D. Rieke
Chemistry Department: Faculty Publications
Novel zerovalent metal species and organometallic reagents are disclosed. The zerovalent metal species are directly produced by reaction of a reducing agent on a metal cyanide salt. Preferably, the zerovalent metal species are directly produced by reaction of an alkali metal reducing agent with a metal cyanide salt. The organometallic reagent results from the reaction of the zerovalent metal species and an organic compound having one or more stable anionic leaving groups.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The collective behavior of up to six target electrons emitted in a single collision of 5.9 MeV/u U65+ with Ne was investigated using high-resolution recoil-ion momentum spectroscopy. With an increasing number of ejected electrons the recoil ions are increasingly scattered into the backward direction, providing evidence that the electrons are emitted into the forward hemisphere. Their mean longitudinal sum energy varies from about 5 eV for single ionization up to 1.1 keV for Ne6+. Experimental recoil-ion momentum distributions are in excellent agreement with results of classical many-particle calculations. © 1996 The American Physical Society.
Effective-Medium Theory For The Electric-Field Dependence Of The Hopping Conductivity Of Disordered Solids, Paul Ernest Parris, B. D. Bookout
Effective-Medium Theory For The Electric-Field Dependence Of The Hopping Conductivity Of Disordered Solids, Paul Ernest Parris, B. D. Bookout
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We derive a general effective-medium theory for describing biased diffusion on a bond-disordered lattice in the presence of an external driving field. In our theory, the effective medium associated with a disordered d-dimensional lattice is characterized, for each value of the applied field, by 2d independent parameters describing, respectively, the net drift velocity vv and the diffusion constant Dvv describing the spread of a carrier packet about its mean value, for each of the d crystal axes. The theory correctly predicts the velocity transition occurring in an exactly soluble model studied by Derrida and, in contrast to other …
A New Archaeoastronomical Investigation Of The Irish Axial-Stone Circles, Frank T. Prendergast, Clive L. Ruggles
A New Archaeoastronomical Investigation Of The Irish Axial-Stone Circles, Frank T. Prendergast, Clive L. Ruggles
Conference Papers
This paper presents the preliminary results of a project undertaken in 1994 to investigate the astronomical potential of the axial-stone circles (ASCs) of seven or more stones in Counties Cork and Kerry, south-west Ireland. This group of sites is of particular interest in that the monuments in the group bear a striking resemblance to the recumbent stone circles (RSCs) of Aberdeenshire, eastern Scotland, which appear to exhibit a strong pattern of alignment in relation to prominent hilltop summits and the rising and setting position of the moon. The first indications from the Irish data are that similar patterns of alignment …

Estimated Nitrogen Fluxes And Nitrogen-Chlorophyll Relationships In Tampa Bay, 1985-1994, Gerold Morrison, Anthony Janicki, David Wade, James Martin, Gabriel Vargo, Roger Johansson
Reports
Cultural eutrophication driven by anthropogenic nutrient loadings has been identified as a priority problem affecting the water quality of Tampa Bay. Bay management programs therefore wish to control future nutrient loads, an effort that will be complicated by the continuing population growth projected for the watershed in coming decades. The eutrophication management efforts is "resource-based" seeking to maintain water clarity in the bay that is adequate to support seagrass at target acreage levels. Among the factors affecting water clarity, anthropogenic nitrogen loadings and corresponding increases in phytoplankton density appear most amenable to management.

Embedded Particle Computation In Evolved Cellular Automata, Wim Hordijk, James P. Crutchfield, Melanie Mitchell
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
In our work we are studying how genetic algorithms (GAs) can evolve cellular automata (CAs) to perform computations that require global coordination. The evolving cellular automata" framework is an idealized means for studying how evolution (natural or computational) can create systems that perform emergent computation, in which the actions of simple components with local information and communication give rise to coordinated global information processing [3].
In previous work [4, 5], we analyzed the process by which a genetic algorithm designed CAs to perform particular tasks. In this paper we focus on how these CAs implement the emergent computational strategies for …

The neutron longitudinal and transverse asymmetries A1n and A2n have been extracted from deep inelastic scattering of polarized electrons by a polarized 3He target at incident energies of 19.42, 22.66, and 25.51 GeV. The measurement allows for the determination of the neutron spin structure functions g1n (x,Q2) and g2n(x,Q2) over the range 0.032 of 2 (GeV/c)2. The data are used for the evaluation of the Ellis-Jaffe and Bjorken sum rules. The neutron spin structure function g1n(x,Q2) is small and …

We prove that the twist-3 chiral-odd parton distributions obey simple Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi evolution equations in the limit Nc → ∞ and give analytic results for the corresponding anomalous dimensions. To this end we introduce an evolution equation for the corresponding three-particle twist-3 parton correlation functions and find an exact analytic solution. For large values of n (operator dimension) we are further able to collect all corrections subleading in Nc, so our final results are valid to O((1/N2c)ln(n)/n) accuracy

INTRODUCTION - Combustion products along with spilled petroleum and industrial chemicals contribute to environmental degradation by contaminating soils and sediments. Such anthropogenic organic matter (OM), if preserved in sediments, can serve an archival function, documenting the local, history of industrial pollution. Christensen and Zhang (1993) determined the sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (P AH) to Lake Michigan from sedimentary records, finding that coal combustion was a major source for PAHs in these sediments. Bodzek and Luks-Betlej (1993) reported that atmospheric deposition is the main source of PAH in soils of the heavily industrialized Upper Silesia region of Poland. Smith and …
Septic Systems For Homeowners, William O. Thom
Septic Systems For Homeowners, William O. Thom
Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications
Septic systems are an effective, long-standing method for collecting, treating, and disposing of wastewaters from rural and surburban homes that do not have access to municipal sewage treatment plants. They collect and treat wastewaters produced in the bathroom, kitchen, and laundry of a home before discharging them into the soil. These systems are used by homeowners in every county in Kentucky.
