Oxidative Coupling Of Methane On Lnba_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-X} Superconductors, N. T. Shamilov, V. P. Vislovskii, E. A. Mamedov, S. M. Aliyev, A. I. Suleimanov, E. G. Ismailov

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The superconducting oxides LnBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-x} (Ln=Y, Gd, Er, Yb, Lu) showed poor selectivity in the oxidative coupling of methane. The addition of 0.5 mol. %Li_{2}O to these materials considerably enhanced the yield of C_{2} hydrocarbons. This effect was related to both lower redox property and higher basicity of Li-doped catalysts as compared to those of undoped ones.

An Amperometric Biosensor For The Determination Of Organophosphorus Pesticides, Azmi Telefoncu Jan 1996

An Amperometric Biosensor For The Determination Of Organophosphorus Pesticides, Azmi Telefoncu

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Organophosphorus pesticides are inhibitors of cholinesterase and this enzyme is used as a monitoring system for pesticides containing organophosphorus compounds. The decrease in activity of cholinesterase is monitored by the choline sensor and is correlated to the concentration of pesticide present in solution. According to this observation a biosensor for pesticides was determined. This biosensor consists of a Clark oxygen electrode, modified with cellulose acetate and dialysis membranes. Between the two membranes there are two immobilized enzymes: acetyl-cholinesterase and choline oxidase.

An Unusual Zinc-Promoted Reductive Retro-Wagner-Meerwein Rearrangement, Yavuz Taşkesenli̇gi̇l, Metin Balci

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Bromination and dehydrobromination of exocyclic olefin {\bf 8} resulted in the formation of bromomethylene compound {\bf 9} and Wagner-Meerwein rearrangement product {\bf 10}. The dehydrobromination of {\bf 10} with potassium {\it tert}-butoxide provided the corresponding bromomethyl compound {\bf 11} in high yield. Reaction of {\bf 11} with Zn-Cu couple in methanol afforded the methyl derivative {\bf 12} and the parent olefin {\bf 8}. The unusual formation mechanism of {\bf 8} has been discussed in term of a reductive retro-Wagner-Meerwein rearrangement.

The Epoxidation Of Oil Obtained From The Eastern Black Sea Fishes, Eyüp Özcan, Bahri Ülküseven

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

In this study we have investigated the suitable reaction conditions for the epoxidation of the semi-refined fish oil obtained from the fishes of eastern Black Sea, with peracetic acid. Various oxidation mixtures to reach the highest epoxyd-oxygene amount have been tested mean while the effective factors were established. In order to establish some specifications of the epoxy-product. Iodine-, hydroxyl-indices and epoxyd-oxygene percents were determined. We've also tried to explain how some reaction conditions (mole ratio of acetic acid to double bond and temperature) influenced the epoxy-product.

Putting Type Annotations To Work, Martin Odersky, Konstantin Laufer Jan 1996

Putting Type Annotations To Work, Martin Odersky, Konstantin Laufer

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

We study an extension of the Hindley/Milner system with explicit type scheme annotations and type declarations. The system can express polymorphic function arguments, user-defined data types with abstract components, and structure types with polymorphic fields. More generally, all programs of the polymorphic lambda calculus can be encoded by a translation between typing derivations. We show that type reconstruction in this system can be reduced to the decidable problem of first-order unification under a mixed prefix.

Ohmic Drop Compensation In Voltammetry:  Iterative Correction Of The Applied Potential, David O. Wipf Jan 1996

Ohmic Drop Compensation In Voltammetry:  Iterative Correction Of The Applied Potential, David O. Wipf

College of Arts and Sciences Publications and Scholarship

A new method of ohmic potential drop correction for use with potential step and sweep voltammetric methods is described. The method, iterative correction of the applied potential (ICAP), essentially replaces an electronic positive feedback correction with a digital positive feedback correction. This paper will present one form of the ICAP procedure, in which voltammetric current data acquired by a high-speed digital oscilloscope are used to iteratively generate a compensating potential waveform that is then synthesized by an arbitrary waveform generator. The ICAP method is advantageous for high-speed measurements, since many of the difficulties caused by electronic positive feedback compensation are …

Dynamical Generation Of Electron Motions In Ground State H2+, In Ground State H2, And In The First Excited State Of H2, Donald Greenspan Jan 1996

Dynamical Generation Of Electron Motions In Ground State H2+, In Ground State H2, And In The First Excited State Of H2, Donald Greenspan

Mathematics Technical Papers

Using the recent formulation of Gell-Mann and Hartle for approximating quantum dynamical phenomena by means of classical equations, we simulate electron motions in ground state H2+, in ground state H2, and in the first excited state of H2. The approach develops approximate initial data first by mathematical bisection. The dynamical calculations are then carried out over short time intervals only, which is consistent with the Gell-Mann and Hartle theory and which is applicable because the phenomena to be studied are periodic. An energy conserving numerical scheme is used so that the energy of a given system will be a numerical …

Conservative Motion Of Discrete, Tetrahedral Tops And Gyroscopes, Donald Greenspan

Mathematics Technical Papers

Tetrahedral tops and gyroscopes are simulated as discrete, rigid bodies in rotation by introducing a molecular mechanics formulation. The conservative, dynamical differential equations are solved numerically in such a fashion that all the system invariants are preserved. Examples which include precession and nutation are described and discussed.

Self-Circumference Of Rotors, Edward J. O'Neill, Mostafa Ghandehari Jan 1996

Self-Circumference Of Rotors, Edward J. O'Neill, Mostafa Ghandehari

Mathematics Technical Papers

The law of cosines from trigonometry is used to obtain elliptic integrals of the second kind to calculate the "self-circumference" of a Reuleaux triangle and the self-circumference of a rotor in an equilateral triangle. The Euclidean lengths of the polar duals of these sets with respect to their centers are expressed in terms of elliptic integrals of the second kind. Geometric inequalities for the polar duals of rotors in the plane are discussed.

Tests Of Random Number Generators Using Ising Model Simulations, Paul D. Coddington Jan 1996

Tests Of Random Number Generators Using Ising Model Simulations, Paul D. Coddington

Northeast Parallel Architecture Center

Large-scale Monte Carlo simulations require high-quality random number generators to ensure correct results. The contrapositive of this statement is also true – the quality of random number generators can be tested by using them in large-scale Monte Carlo simulations. We have tested many commonly used random number generators with high precision Monte Carlo simulations of the 2-d Ising model using the Metropolis, Swendsen-Wang, and Wolff algorithms. This work is being extended to the testing of random number generators for parallel computers. The results of these tests are presented, along with recommendations for random number generators for high-performance computers, particularly for …

Improved Data Migration And Processing For Projecting The Financial Aid Budget, Jeffery L. Olson '96 Jan 1996

Improved Data Migration And Processing For Projecting The Financial Aid Budget, Jeffery L. Olson '96

Honors Projects

Last fall, I again resumed work on the budget projection model that encompassed five spreadsheets. Four of these sheets generated a set of statistical averages for each class. Each one consisted of 101 columns containing data for the four-to five-hundred students(rows) in each class. In addition, a fifth sheet used these averages to generate a highly accurate prediction for expenditures in the upcoming year. However, there were two main areas of improvement that became readily apparent: importing data and the sheets themselves.

The B-Spline Wavelet Recurrence Relation And B-Spline Wavelet Interpolation, Patrick J. Crowley '96 Jan 1996

The B-Spline Wavelet Recurrence Relation And B-Spline Wavelet Interpolation, Patrick J. Crowley '96

Honors Projects

In most signal processing applications, a given range of data is best described by a set of local characteristics as opposed to a single global characteristic. In image processing, for example, a region of an image that contains numerous edges is best described as a region whose pixel color values change abruptly, i.e., they are not continuous values of color. A region of constant color, or gradually changing color, is best described as a region whose pixel values are constant, or whose values increase linearly by some factor. It is advantageous to represent this data with signals capable of adapting …
