The Synthesis Of An Organophosphorus Analog Of Acetylcholine, Jay-James R. Miller '96 Jan 1996

The Synthesis Of An Organophosphorus Analog Of Acetylcholine, Jay-James R. Miller '96

Honors Projects

Acetylcholine (ACh) is the most widely studied of all neurotransmitter substances. For normal nerve function, the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE) must hydrolyze ACh into its basic chemical constituents, choline and acetate. AChE is readily inhibited by organophosphorus (OP) compounds like sarin and soman--both nerve gases--as well as various pesticides. OP compounds also have been widely used to study the mechanism of ACh hydrolysis via AChE. In the 1980s, two studies using OP inhibitors examined the stereoselectivity of AChE hydrolysis. However, they yielded conflicting results. Hence, it is hoped that new studies with a novel OP compound will provide definitive information about …

Acidic Marine Biotoxins Implicated In Diarrhetic Shellfish Poisoning, Eoin P. Carmody Jan 1996

Acidic Marine Biotoxins Implicated In Diarrhetic Shellfish Poisoning, Eoin P. Carmody

Theses

An okadaic acid (OA) etiology has been demonstrated for most outbreaks of diarrhetic shellfish poisoning (DSP) in Europe, An isomer of OA, dinophysistoxin-2 (DTX-2), has recently been found in Irish waters and, in 1991 and 1994, was the major toxin during prolonged infestations in cultivated mussels (Mytilus edulis) along the south-west coast of Ireland.

The OA class of DSP toxins have been analysed by HPLC using modified versions of three established fluorescent derivatisation methods. A ‘dual tag’ method for the confirmation of specific toxins has also been developed.

Survey work has been carried out over the past four years on …

Model Equations From Gyrokinetic Theory For A Non-Neutral Plasma To Include Temperature Effects And Applications To A Plasma Of Infinite Length, S. Neil Rasband Jan 1996

Model Equations From Gyrokinetic Theory For A Non-Neutral Plasma To Include Temperature Effects And Applications To A Plasma Of Infinite Length, S. Neil Rasband

Faculty Publications

Gyrokinetic equations are derived for applications to non-neutral plasmas in constant, straight magnetic fields wherein E X B drift velocities are of the same order as thermal velocities. The ratio of the E X B rotation frequency to the cyclotron frequency and the ratio of the gyroradius to a plasma scale length are assumed to be of order epsilon and terms are retained in the gyrokinetic expansion to second order to include finite-Larmor-radius (FLR) effects. A mode equation is obtained for a non-neutral plasma in the infinite-length approximation. The singularities of this equation are compared and contrasted with the familiar …

The inclusive A(e,e') cross section for x≃1 was measured on 2H, C, Fe, and Au for momentum transfers Q2 from 1 to 6.8 (GeV/c)2. The scaling behavior of the data was examined in the region of transition from y scaling to x scaling. Throughout this transitional region, the data exhibit ξ scaling, reminiscent of the Bloom-Gilman duality seen in free nucleon scattering.

Dynamic Phenomena In Organic Metal (Bedt-Ttf)3ta2f11, Juana Acrivos

Faculty Publications, Chemistry

Dynamic electron spin resonance, ESR measurements suggest that this paramagnetic, layered organic metal behaves similarly to cuprate superconductors. There is a dynamic equilibrium between doublet, D and triplet, T* states near the transition temperature to superconductivity Tc= 10±3 K; antiferromagnetic, AF resonance is observed from room temperature to ≈ 150 K, in this temperature region the temperature dependence of the D Lorentzian ESR line widths obtains a first order rate constant for the disappearance of the state (k1 = 3.5 ×107 e−111/T/s) and T* ESR is not observed, it is detected only below 44 K when the lifetime of AF …

Two recent severe extratropical storms, the "Halloween storm" of October 26-November 2 1991 (HOS) and the storm of the century" (SOC) of March 12-15 1993, are characterized by measurements of sea states of unprecedented magnitude off the east coast of North America. A Canadian buoy moored in deep water south of Nova Scotia recorded peak significant wave heights (HS) exceeding 16 m in both storms. In SOC, a NOAA buoy moored southeast of Cape Hatteras recorded a peak HS of 15.7 m, a record high for NOAA buoys. These extreme storm seas (ESS) exceed existing estimates of the 100-yr estimated …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Bifunctional Silica Gel Surfaces, Alufelwi Maxwell Tshavhungwe Jan 1996

Synthesis And Characterization Of Bifunctional Silica Gel Surfaces, Alufelwi Maxwell Tshavhungwe

Masters Theses

Bifunctional silica surfaces consisting of various combinations of the following organofunctional silanes were synthesized and characterized using diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy: hexamethyldisilazane, octyldimethylmethoxysilane, phenyldimethylethoxysilane, (3-aminopropyl) -dimethylmethoxysilane, ( 2 - cyanoethyl)triethoxysilane, and trimethylmethoxysilane.

The relative amounts of organosilanes loaded on a silica surface were obtained from band area ratios of IR bands. Ratios of organosilanes bonded to the same silica surface were calculated from normalized band areas of the isolated silanol peak. In reactions in which surface coverage was incomplete, the relative amount of inaccessible silanols was determined from the band area ratio of the silanol peak. Comparisons of organosilane loading …

The Yellowed Archives Of Yellowcake, Ken Silver Jan 1996

The Yellowed Archives Of Yellowcake, Ken Silver

Canyonlands Research Bibliography

Extensive historical documentation of exposures and releases at government-owned energy facilities is a unique and valuable resource for analyzing and communicating health risks. Facilities at all stages of the atomic fuel cycle were the subject of numerous industrial hygiene, occupational health, and environmental assessments during the Cold War period. Uranium mines and mills on the Colorado Plateau were investigated as early as the 1940s. One such facility was the mill in Monticello, Utah, which began operation as a vanadium extraction plant in 1943 and was later adapted to recover uranium from camotite ores. The mill ceased operation in 1960. The …

Shrub-Grassland Small Mammal And Vegetation Responses To Rest From Grazing, Steven S. Rosenstock Jan 1996

Shrub-Grassland Small Mammal And Vegetation Responses To Rest From Grazing, Steven S. Rosenstock

Canyonlands Research Bibliography

Between 1989-1991, I studied the effects of livestock grazing on vegetation and small mammals in semiarid shrub-grassland habitats of south-central Utah. Responses were measured at 2 spatial habitat scales; patches and macrohabitats. Patch-scale data were obtained from 4 small (<1 ha) livestock exclosures and nearby grazed areas. Macrohabitat-scale data were collected at 4 actively grazed sites and 4 comparable, excellent condition sites, ungrazed for 30+ years. Ungrazed patch and macrohabitat sites had more surface litter, greater perennial grass cover, and taller perennial grass plants, but treatment response varied among sites. Small mammal responses were apparent only at the macrohabitat scale, where ungrazed sites had 50% greater species richness and 80% higher abundance. Small mammal reproductive activity and biomass were not affected by rest from grazing at either scale. Small mammal community composition varied greatly among sites and within treatments. This variability has important implications for ecological monitoring efforts involving these species.

Mechanistic Studies On Malate Dehydrogenase From Escherichia Coli, S. Kirk Wright Jan 1996

Mechanistic Studies On Malate Dehydrogenase From Escherichia Coli, S. Kirk Wright

Masters Theses

Kinetic studies and chemical modification studies were performed on malate dehydrogenase from Escherichia coli (eMDH). Chemical modification studies using diethylpyrocarbonate and iodoacetic acid, along with log V/K profiles indicate that one ionizing group with a pKa between 7.9 and 8.5 acts as a general acid/base in the catalytic mechanism. Log V profiles suggest that malate binds to the correctly protonated form of the enzyme. These results imply that a histidine residue is required for catalysis.

A primary deuterium kinetic isotope effect of 1.43 (±0.14) was observed on V/K using malate-2-d, while no isotope effect was measured on Vmax …

Small Mammal Community Structure In Restored Prairies, Kathleen A. Falout Jan 1996

Small Mammal Community Structure In Restored Prairies, Kathleen A. Falout

Masters Theses

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources currently manages approximately 4,000 hectares of natural prairie. High human impacts coupled with small patch size result in challenging management decisions for prairie conservation. The ideal restored prairie would consist of a mosaic of habitats varying in vegetation from forb-grass dominated areas to oak savannas, with concurrent stages of vegetative succession occurring across the habitats. A study was conducted at the Middle Fork State Fish and Wildlife Area located in Vermillion County, IL, to analyze small mammal diversity and community composition among three different stages of prairie restoration.

The three treatment categories were: fallow …

Sums Of Powers And The Bernoulli Numbers, Laura Elizabeth S. Coen Jan 1996

Sums Of Powers And The Bernoulli Numbers, Laura Elizabeth S. Coen

Masters Theses

This expository thesis examines the relationship between finite sums of powers and a sequence of numbers known as the Bernoulli numbers. It presents significant historical events tracing the discovery of formulas for finite sums of powers of integers, the discovery of a single formula by Jacob Bernoulli which gives the Bernoulli numbers, and important discoveries related to the Bernoulli numbers. A method of generating the sequence by means of a number theoretic recursive formula is given. Also given is an application of matrix theory to find a relation, first given by Johannes Faulhaber, between finite sums of odd powers and …

The Strong Force: Two Calculations Of Strong Interaction Phenomena, Richard L. Kahler Jan 1996

The Strong Force: Two Calculations Of Strong Interaction Phenomena, Richard L. Kahler

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Because the theory of strong interactions is mathematically intractable, it is necessary to make approximations which preserve phenomenological features of the theory in order to get answers to practical questions. This thesis explores two such techniques: (1) the chiral bag model is used to investigate the nucleon-nucleon potential and (2) perturbative QCD is used to investigate the pion form factor. An extensive introduction is presented to make the thesis more understandable to a wider audience of people otherwise unfamiliar with particle physics.

Excitation Of An Atomic Electron To A Coherent Superposition Of Macroscopically Distinct States, Michael W. Noel, C. R. Stroud Jr. Jan 1996

Excitation Of An Atomic Electron To A Coherent Superposition Of Macroscopically Distinct States, Michael W. Noel, C. R. Stroud Jr.

Physics Faculty Research and Scholarship

An atomic electron is prepared in a state closely analogous to Schrödinger’s coherent superposition of “live cat” and “dead cat.” The electronic state is a coherent superposition of two spatially localized wave packets separated by approximately 0.4 mm at the opposite extremes of a Kepler orbit. State-selective ionization is used to verify that only every other atomic level is populated in the “cat state,” and a Ramsey fringe measurement is used to verify the coherence of the superposition.

A Recent Colonization Of Dolichopoda Cave Crickets In The Poscola Cave (Orthoptera, Rhaphidophoridae), Camilla Bernardini, Claudio Di Russo, Mauro Rampini, Donatella Cersaroni, Valerio Sbordoni Jan 1996

A Recent Colonization Of Dolichopoda Cave Crickets In The Poscola Cave (Orthoptera, Rhaphidophoridae), Camilla Bernardini, Claudio Di Russo, Mauro Rampini, Donatella Cersaroni, Valerio Sbordoni

International Journal of Speleology

We report a series of investigations carried out on a Dolichopoda population recently discovered in the Poscola cave and in some small caves nearby (Lessini Mountains, Vicenza). This population is located north of Po river, outside the present known geographic range of this genus in Italy. Morphology of the epiphallus corroborated by chromosome and allozyme analysis indicated that this population belongs to D. laetitiae. Study of the genetic structure of population in the Poscola area revealed high gene flow levels between Poscola and the other minor caves, suggesting the occurrence of a single expanding population. This finding as well …

Information Systems In Non-Profit Organizations: Enhancing Performance Through Online Help, Robert H. Lane Jan 1996

Information Systems In Non-Profit Organizations: Enhancing Performance Through Online Help, Robert H. Lane

CCE Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation is to focus attention on the problems which non-profit organizations face in dealing with employee dissatisfaction and turnover among clerical staff whose principal responsibility is data entry. To address the problem, a presentation on the background, a discussion of the managerial and information systems implications, and an end-user needs assessment culminated in the development of an online help system for an IDM AS/400-based membership management package.

The system enables the data entry staff to easily locate the answers to most of their commonly asked questions without leaving their workstation, thus reducing the need for as …

Design Information Recovery From Legacy System Cobol Source Code: Research On A Reverse Engineering Methodology, Robert Lee Miller Jan 1996

Design Information Recovery From Legacy System Cobol Source Code: Research On A Reverse Engineering Methodology, Robert Lee Miller

CCE Theses and Dissertations

Much of the software in the world today was developed from the mid-1960s to the mid- 1970s.This legacy software deteriorates as it is modified to satisfy new organizational requirements. Currently, legacy system maintenance requires more time than new system development. Eventually, legacy systems must be replaced. Identifying their functionality is a critical part of the replacement effort. Recovering functions from source code is difficult because the domain knowledge used to develop the system is not routinely retained. The source code is frequently the only reliable source of functional information.

This dissertation describes functional process information recovery from COBOL source code …

Adaptive Information Filtering As A Means To Overcome Information Overload, Daniel R. Tauritz Jan 1996

Adaptive Information Filtering As A Means To Overcome Information Overload, Daniel R. Tauritz

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Information Filtering is concerned with filtering data streams in such a way as to leave only pertinent data (information) to be perused. When the data streams are produced in a changing environment (as most if not all are) the filtering has to adapt too in order to remain effective. Adaptive Information Filtering (AIF) is concerned with filtering in changing environments. The changes may occur both on the transmission side (the nature of the streams can change), and on the reception side (the interest of a user can change). The thesis research described in this paper combines trigram analysis, clustering, and …

Geographical Variation In The Tropical Cave Cockroach Paratemnopteryx Stonei Roth (Blattellidae) In North Queensland, Australia, David Paul Slaney, Philip Weinstein

International Journal of Speleology

Observations of cave dwelling organisms in both tropical and temperate caves often reveal morphological modifications, which may reflect various stages of adaptation to cave life. From April 1994 to June 1995 a number of adult Paratemnopteryx stonei were collected from 7 caves in tropical North Queensland to investigate the degree of geographical variation in such troglomorphies between cave populations. Results of morphometric analyses showed the occurrence of a morphological discontinuity between cave populations from the different geographic regions. The body dimensions particularly important in discriminating between each cave population were tegmen length (both sexes), and secondly, tegmen width and tarsus …

Using Symbolic Manipulation To Evaluate Feynman's Path Integral For An Interaction Of The Form F(T) X R, Min-Qi Bao, Anthony F. Starace

Anthony F. Starace Publications

Obtaining Feynman's path integral, which is a representation for the system's Green's function, is essential for many physical problems. In this paper, a symbolic algebra program is presented to evaluate analytically Feynman's path integral for an interaction of the form F(t) x r. Such an interaction governs the motion of an electron in the field of one or more lasers as well as in a static electric field.
