Effects Of Periodic Environmental Hypoxia On Predator Utilization Of Macrobenthic Infauna, Janet A. Nestlerode

Hypoxia and anoxia have significant deleterious ecological effects on living resources throughout many estuarine and marine ecosystems worldwide. Brief periods of low oxygen facilitate transfer of benthic production to higher trophic levels as many benthic infaunal species have shallower sediment depth distributions during hypoxic events. A baited time-lapse camera equipped with a water quality datalogger was used to document in situ exploitation of oxygen-stressed benthic invertebrate prey organisms by mobile fish and crustacean predators during alternating normoxia-hypoxia cycles in the York River. A Coupled, Non-Linear, Steady State Model For Early Diagenetic Processes In Pelagic Sediments, Surya P. Dhakar, David J. Burdige

A steady state, coupled, non-linear model has been developed for early diagenetic processes in pelagic and hemi-pelagic marine sediments. Model results show that the occurrence of oxic and sub-oxic diagenetic processes is significantly affected by variations in parameters such as the sedimentation rate, bioturbation coefficient, sediment porosity, and organic matter flux to the sediments. Increases in the sedimentation rate or the bioturbation coefficient increase organic matter oxidation by sub-oxic processes, whereas an increase in sediment porosity decreases organic matter oxidation by sub-oxic processes. The success of spreadsheets has shown that a visual representation of a 2D array greatly facilitates solving certain problems. However, spreadsheets are not general-purpose programming environments and are not suited to many problems that might naturally be solved using multi-dimensional arrays. Furthermore, spreadsheets employ a textual notation for cell references in formulas. This notation, which adds to the programmer''s burden by distinguishing between relative and absolute addressing, can be difficult to understand and is error-prone even for the most experienced users. A brief assessment of the soils of 1,186 hectares in the Mantinea Loop, and their suitability for irrigated agriculture, was conducted in June 1994. Four map units based on soil, landform and vegetation were identified. The soils are mainly calcareous brown fine sandy loams. The landform is an alluvial plain, with numerous small depressions and channels caused by the meandering and flooding of the Ord River.

A brief assessment of the soils of 2,064 ha of land on the Ivanhoe West Bank and their suitability for irrigated agriculture was conducted in May-June 1994. Sandy or loamy soils occur on broad levees adjacent to the Ord River, and areas of 'black soil' and 'red soil' plains occur behind these levees. Some areas of the red soil plain and levees are deeply dissected, and occasional active erosion is evident.

An assessment of the soils and landforms of approximately 12,000 ha in the Knox Creek Plain in Western Australia and the Northern Territory was conducted in May and June 1994. Seventeen map units were identified and their soils, landform and vegetation characteristics were described. Grey or brown cracking clays predominate on the plain, however variable red or brown soils on the coarser alluvium of remnant levees are common in the south and south-east.

The Weaber Plain, north-east of Kununurra, is one of three "black soil" plains in the Kimberley area of Western Australia. It comprises about 15,000 hectares of irrigable land, part of which is known as Stage 2 of the Ord River Irrigation Area (ORIA). The area was surveyed in 1977 following a similar survey of the nearby Keep River Plain and preceding a survey of the Ivanhoe Plain, which has since been developed commercially. Map units and soil series used in those reports have also been used for this rep ility in crop selection, preferring high water use crops.

This report presents descriptions to accompany land resource maps of the Wellington- Blackwood district, east of Bunbury in the south-west of Western Australia. The maps cover an area of about 760,000 hectares and are presented as two map sheets at a scale of 1:100,000. Four different physiographic zones cover the survey area: • The Western Darling Range Zone occupies the major portion of the area and consists of a deeply dissected lateritic plateau overlying crystalline rocks. The ¹H NMR spectra of a series of well-characterized μ-phenoxo and μ-alkoxo spin-coupled dicopper(II) complexes have been investigated. The complexes studied were [Cu₂(BPMP)(OH)]²⁺ (1) (BPMP = 2,6-bis[[bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amino]methyl]-4-methylphenol), [Cu₂(CH₃HXTA)(OH)]^2- (2) (CH₃HXTA = N,N ‘-(2-hydroxy-5-methyl-1,3-xylylene)bis(N-carboxymethylglycine), [Cu₂(m-XYL)(OH)]²⁺ (3) (m-XYL = 2,6-bis[[bis(2-pyridylethyl)amino]methyl]phenol), and [Cu₂(TBHP)(OAc)]²⁺ (4) (TBHP = N,N,N ‘,N  ‘-tetrakis[(2-benzimidazolyl)methyl]-2-hydroxy-1,3-diaminopropane). We present measurements of the structure function F2 in e+p scattering at HERA in the range 3.5 GeV2 < Q2 < 5000 GeV2. A new reconstruction method has allowed a significant improvement in the resolution of the kinematic variables and an extension of the kinematic region covered by the experiment. At Q2 < 35 GeV2 the range in x now spans 6.3 · 10-5 < x < 0.08 providing overlap with measurements from fixed target experiments. At values of Q2 above 1000 GeV2 the x range extends to 0.5. Systematic errors below 5% have been achieved for most of the kinematic region. The structure function rises as x decreases; the rise becomes more pronounced as Q2 increases. The behaviour of the structure function data is well described by next-to-leading order perturbative QCD as implemented in the DGLAP evolution equations. © Springer-Verlag 1996.

Remnant vegetation, wetlands and riverine systems on both private and public land throughout south-western Australia are being rapidly degraded by dryland salinity, inundation, silting, nutrient enrichment and weed invasion. Richard George, Don McFarlane and Russel Speed outline some of the reasons why this is happening and provide some case studies that highlight actions to protect these remnants.

In this study, we have given the definition of almost Cauchy-Toeplitz matrix. i.e. its elements are t_{ij}= a(i=j) and t_{ij}=1/(i-j)\, (i\neq j) such that a is a real number. We have found a lower and upper bounds for the \ell_{p} norm of this matrix. Furthermore, we have done the proof of the conjecture that were given by myself for the spectral norm of this matrix.

This report contains a description of the first part of the Los Angeles Region Seismic Experiment (LARSE). To date, LARSE has consisted of two experiments: passive, which took place in fall, 1993 (LARSE93), and active, which took place in fall, 1994 (LARSE94). The goal of the 1993 experiment was to collect waveform data from local and distant earthquakes to obtain three-dimensional images of lower crust and upper mantle structure in Southern California, particularly under the San Gabriel Mountains and across the San Andreas fault. When the reconstructability analysis of a directed system yields a structure in which a generated variable appears in more than one subsystem, information from all of the subsystems can be used in modeling the relationship between generating and generated variables. The conceptualization and procedure proposed here is discussed in relation to Klir's concept of control uniqueness.

This paper describes work that is in progress on a formalised preparation to object-oriented query optimisation. Such preparation is conducive to the development of optimisation strategies. As an example of a formal preparation, this paper presents a formalised object algebra, a suggested optimisation method and an implementation of an algebraic converter suitable for DAPLEX.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) computer model of mobile source emissions is used to estimate the benefits of future emissions control programs. Four input assumptions are discussed, each of which tends to overestimate the benefits of biennial testing programs. The assumptions are: each model year drives the same number of miles; high/superemitters, absent initially, increase linearly with mileage; inspection and maintenance (I/M) readings are invariant, and I/M repairs last forever. States opting for these programs should be aware that the predicted benefits may not materialize.

The interaction of a long flexible polymer chain with mesoscopic particles of spherical or elongated cylindrical shape is investigated by field-theoretic methods using the polymer-magnet analogy. In the case that these particles are immersed in a dilute polymer solution and exhibit purely repulsive surfaces we study density profiles for monomers and chain ends near such a particle, the change of configurational entropy by immersing a particle into the solution, and the depletion interaction between a particle and a distant planar wall. A Study Of The Relationship Between Use Of Technology In Math And Higher Test Scores, Mary Ann Grooters

This thesis explored the relationship of a technology enhanced curriculum to higher test scores and higher student motivation. This thesis involved two seventh grade math classes in Kentwood, Michigan. A control class received instruction including lectures, written assignments, and projects. The test group received similar assignments and projects and in addition were given technology supported exercises. A survey given to the test group examined motivation levels, and end of chapter tests compared achievement scores of both groups. The findings indicate that a technology enhanced curriculum does not lead to higher test scores but does impact student motivation to learn math.
