Scale Issues In Soil Moisture Modelling: Problems And Prospects, Rezaul Mahmood Jan 1996

Scale Issues In Soil Moisture Modelling: Problems And Prospects, Rezaul Mahmood

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Soil moisture storage is an important component of the hydrological cycle and plays a key role in land-surface-atmosphere interaction. The soil-moisture storage equation in this study considers precipitation as an input and soil moisture as a residual term for runoff and evapotranspiration. A number of models have been developed to estimate soil moisture storage and the components of the soil-moisture storage equation. A detailed discussion of the implication of the scale of application of these models reports that it is not possible to extrapolate processes and their estimates from the small to the large scale. It is also noted that …

Measured chemical parameters in Uludağ National Park were comparable with other rural area data expect Ca^{2+} which was higher in our station with an average concentration of 1.61 \mug m^{-3}. Ion balance showed a deficiency of acid forming anions (SO^{2-}_4 and NO^-_3 for about 30% on the …

Catalysis Of Autoxidation Of 2,6-Di-Tert-Butylphenol In Water By Metallophthalocyanine Tetrasulfonates Bound To Polyelectrolyte Supports, Yasemin Tura Kopkalli, Hayrettin Türk Jan 1996

Catalysis Of Autoxidation Of 2,6-Di-Tert-Butylphenol In Water By Metallophthalocyanine Tetrasulfonates Bound To Polyelectrolyte Supports, Yasemin Tura Kopkalli, Hayrettin Türk

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

2,6-and 2,10-Ionenes and soluble poly(vinylbenzyl)trimethylammonium chloride polyelectrolytes were synthesized and used as catalyst supports for cobalt-, iron- and copper-phthalocyanine tetrasulfonates on the autoxidation of 2,6-di-{\it tert}-butylphenol in water by molecular oxygen. Polyelectrolyte supported cobalt-phthalocyanine tetrasulfonate showed the highest activity in comparison with the supported analogous of iron- and copper-phthalocyanine tetrasulfonates. The supported metallophthalocyanine tetrasulfonates had better catalytic activities than the unsupported analogous for the reaction. The reaction yielded 3,3',5,5'-tetra-tert-butyl- 4,4'-diphenoquinone as the only oxidation product of 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol. The extent of the reaction was affected by time, temperature, pH, the types and concentrations of supports and metallophthalocyanine tetrasulfonates.

Chelate Ring-Closure Kinetics Of Cr(Co)_5 (Dppm) Studied By ^{31}P-Nmr Spectroscopy, Saim Özkar, Ceyhan Kayran, Ayşin Tekkaya

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

^{31}P-NMR spectroscopy was used to study the kinetics of the chelate ring-closure reaction in CR(CO)_5 (DPPM) where DPPM is bis (diphenylphosphino) methane. DPPM is potentially a bidentate ligand, but in this complex it is coordinated to the transition metal in a monodentate fashion and therefore can undergo chelation. The thermal chelate ring-closure reaction was carried out in an NMR sample tube at a constant temperature and the course of the reaction was quantitatively followed by taking ^{31}P-NMR spectra in appropriate time intervals. Kinetic results have shown that the chelate ring-closure reaction of Cr(CO)_5 DPPM is of zero-order. Activation parameters were …

High-Frequency Fluctuations Of A Modulated, Helical Electron Beam, Mark Anthony Reynolds Jan 1996

High-Frequency Fluctuations Of A Modulated, Helical Electron Beam, Mark Anthony Reynolds

Publications

The high-frequency electromagnetic field generated by a density-modulated, helical electron beam propagating in a magnetized plasma is calculated. The magnetic fluctuations are found to exhibit spatially localized ~evanescent! resonances at harmonics of the electron-cyclotron frequency, whose width is determined by the pitch angle of the beam, and whose existence is a consequence of the helical geometry. In addition, electrostatic modes are radiated near the hybrid frequencies, and electromagnetic modes are radiated above the upper-hybrid frequency. The predicted frequency spectrum and mode structure in configuration space are in good agreement with experimental observations of discrete emission lines at the electron-cyclotron harmonics.

On Non-Holonomic Second-Order Connections With Applications To Continua With Microstructure, Marek Elźanowski, Serge Preston Jan 1996

On Non-Holonomic Second-Order Connections With Applications To Continua With Microstructure, Marek Elźanowski, Serge Preston

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Motivated by the theory of uniform elastic structures we try to determine the conditions for the local flatness of locally integrable connections on non-holonomic frame bundles of order 2. Utilizing the results of Yuen as well as our results for the holonomic case, we show that the locally integrable non-holonomic 2-connection is locally flat if, and only if, its projection to the bundle of linear frames is symmetric and the so-called inhomogeneity tensor vanishes. In the last section of this short paper we show how these results can be interpreted in the framework of the theory of uniformity of simple …

Structured Eigenvectors, Interlacing, And Matrix Completions, Brenda K. Kroschel Jan 1996

Structured Eigenvectors, Interlacing, And Matrix Completions, Brenda K. Kroschel

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

This dissertation presents results from three areas of applicable matrix analysis: structured eigenvectors, interlacing, and matrix completion problems. Although these are distinct topics, the structured eigenvector results provide connections.;It is a straightforward matrix calculation that if {dollar}\lambda{dollar} is an eigenvalue of A, x an associated structured eigenvector and {dollar}\alpha{dollar} the set of positions in which x has nonzero entries, then {dollar}\lambda{dollar} is also an eigenvalue of the submatrix of A that lies in the rows and columns indexed by {dollar}\alpha{dollar}. We present a converse to this statement and apply the results to interlacing and to matrix completion problems. Several corollaries …

The Projector Basis Method For Electronic Band Structure Calculations, Christopher Haas Jan 1996

The Projector Basis Method For Electronic Band Structure Calculations, Christopher Haas

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Over the last several decades, two methods have emerged as the standard tools for the calculation of electronic band structures. These methods, the Car-Parinello plane wave method and the linear augmented plane wave method (LAPW), each have strengths and weaknesses in different regimes of physical problems. The Car-Parinello algorithm is ideal for calculations with soft pseudopotentials and large numbers of atoms. The LAPW method, on the other hand, easily handles all-electron and hard-core pseudopotential calculations with a small number of atoms. The projector basis method, presented here, is a hybrid mixed basis method which allows the calculation of moderately large …

A Multiple-Precision Division Algorithm, David M. Smith Jan 1996

A Multiple-Precision Division Algorithm, David M. Smith

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

The classical algorithm for multiple-precision division normalizes digits during each step and sometimes makes correction steps when the initial guess for the quotient digit turns out to be wrong. A method is presented that runs faster by skipping most of the intermediate normalization and recovers from wrong guesses without separate correction steps.

Effects Of Periodic Environmental Hypoxia On Predator Utilization Of Macrobenthic Infauna, Janet A. Nestlerode Jan 1996

Effects Of Periodic Environmental Hypoxia On Predator Utilization Of Macrobenthic Infauna, Janet A. Nestlerode

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Hypoxia and anoxia have significant deleterious ecological effects on living resources throughout many estuarine and marine ecosystems worldwide. Brief periods of low oxygen facilitate transfer of benthic production to higher trophic levels as many benthic infaunal species have shallower sediment depth distributions during hypoxic events. A baited time-lapse camera equipped with a water quality datalogger was used to document in situ exploitation of oxygen-stressed benthic invertebrate prey organisms by mobile fish and crustacean predators during alternating normoxia-hypoxia cycles in the York River. Based on photographic and diver observations, this hypoxiainduced benthic-pelagic transfer of production is more likely to occur when …
