Distribution Coefficients Of Ionized And Un-Ionized Halogenated Phenols In An Octanol-Water System And Their Relationship To Molecular Structure, Sven Hensler

Dissertations and Theses

Life supporting biological membranes are barriers to toxic chemicals. One of the factors determining the toxicity of chemical compounds is their distribution between membranes and their an environment. An octanol-water system is frequently used as a model for biological membranes to estimate the toxic potency of environmental pollutants. The distribution of a chemical between the octanol and the water phase is described by the octanol-water partition coefficient KOW. This study is concerned with the relationship between KOW and the molecular structure of the toxic chemical.

In the study the following trihalophenols were included: 2,4,6-trifluorophenol (TriFP), 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TriCP); …

Phase Transitions In Driven Bilayer Systems: A Monte Carlo Study, C. C. Hill, R. K. P. Zia, Beate Schmittmann Jul 1996

Phase Transitions In Driven Bilayer Systems: A Monte Carlo Study, C. C. Hill, R. K. P. Zia, Beate Schmittmann

Beate Schmittmann

We investigate the phase diagram of a system with two layers of an Ising lattice gas at half filling. In addition to the usual intralayer nearest neighbor attractive interaction, there is an interlayer potential J. Under equilibrium conditions, the phase diagram is symmetric under J→−J, though the ground states are different. The effects of imposing a uniform external drive, studied by simulation techniques, are dramatic. The mechanisms responsible for such behavior are discussed.

Application Of Permutations To Lossless Compression Of Multispectral Thematic Mapper Images, Ziya Arnavut, Sunil Narumalani Jul 1996

Application Of Permutations To Lossless Compression Of Multispectral Thematic Mapper Images, Ziya Arnavut, Sunil Narumalani

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The goal of data compression is to find shorter representa- tions for any given data. In a data storage application, this is done in order to save storage space on an auxiliary device or, in the case of a communication scenario, to increase channel throughput. Because re- motely sensed data require tremendous amounts of transmission and storage space, it is essential to find good algorithms that utilize the spa- tial and spectral characteristics of these data to compress them. A new technique is presented that uses a spectral and spatial correlation to create orderly data for the compression of multispectral …

Anisotropy And Polarization In Charge Changing Collisions Of C⁴⁺ With Na(3s) And Laser Aligned Na(3p), S. Schippers, R. Hoekstra, R. Morgenstern, Ronald E. Olson Jul 1996

Anisotropy And Polarization In Charge Changing Collisions Of C⁴⁺ With Na(3s) And Laser Aligned Na(3p), S. Schippers, R. Hoekstra, R. Morgenstern, Ronald E. Olson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Absolute cross sections for C3+(6→5) emission at 465.7 nm after collisions of C4+ ions with ground state Na(3s) and laser excited aligned Na(3p) atoms are measured over the collision energy range of 3-7 keV amu-1. For Na(3s) polarizations are observed by measuring the linear polarization of the emitted light. In these collisions the polarization is found to be 0.33 and almost independent of the collision energy. Cross sections for collisions with the Na(3p) target are up to five times larger than for collisions with Na(3s). Slightly larger cross sections are measured when the laser excited Na(3p) target is Π-aligned as …

Investigation Of Spatial Patterns Of Ground-Water Exchange With Lakes, Using A Three-Dimensional Numerical Model, Indranil Bandopadhyay Jul 1996

Investigation Of Spatial Patterns Of Ground-Water Exchange With Lakes, Using A Three-Dimensional Numerical Model, Indranil Bandopadhyay

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Hydrogeologic variables controlling groundwater exchange with inflow and flow-through lakes were simulated using a three-dimensional numerical model (MODFLOW) to investigate and quantify spatial patterns of lake bed seepage and hydraulic head distributions in the porous medium surrounding the lakes. Also, the total annual inflow and outflow were calculated as a percentage of lake volume for flow-through lake simulations. The general exponential decline of seepage rates with distance offshore was best demonstrated at lower anisotropy ratio (i.e., Kh/Kv = 1, 10), with increasing deviation from the exponential pattern as anisotropy was increased to 100 and 1000. 2-D vertical section models constructed …

Model Calculations Of Langmuir Monolayers: Pressure Effects On Tilting Behavior Of Idealized Amphiphiles, D.R. Swanson, Robert J. Hardy, Craig J. Eckhardt Jul 1996

Model Calculations Of Langmuir Monolayers: Pressure Effects On Tilting Behavior Of Idealized Amphiphiles, D.R. Swanson, Robert J. Hardy, Craig J. Eckhardt

Craig J. Eckhardt Publications

Model amphiphiles consisting of lines of Lennard-Jones (LJ) centers are investigated to determine the effect of pressure and molecular geometry on ground-state tilting behavior. Both the amphiphile length and the intramolecular distance between LJ centers is varied. The results give guidelines for understanding and controlling tilting behavior in monolayer films.

The production of φ mesons in the reaction e+p → e+φp (φ → K+K-), for 7 < Q2 < 25 GeV2 and for virtual photon-proton centre of mass energies (W) in the range 42-134 GeV, has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA. When compared to lower energy data at similar Q2, the results show that the γp → p0p cross section rises strongly with W. This behaviour is similar to that previously found for the γ*p → p0p cross section. This strong dependence cannot be explained by production through soft pomeron exchange. It is, however, consistent with perturbative QCD expectations, where it reflects the rise of the gluon momentum density in the proton at small x. The ratio of σ(φ)/σ(p0), which has previously been determined by ZEUS to be 0.065 ± 0.013 (stat.) in photoproduction at a mean W of 70 GeV, is measured to be 0.18 ± 0.05 (stat.) ± 0.03 (syst.) at a mean Q2 of 12.3 GeV2 and mean W of ≈ 100 GeV and is thus approaching at large Q2 the value of 2/9 predicted from the quark charges of the vector mesons and a flavour independent production mechanism.

Correlation Of The Upper Ellensburg Formation With The Old Scab Mountain Eruptive Center, East-Central Cascade Range, Washington, Christopher Charles Humphrey

Dissertations and Theses

The Ellensburg Formation, preserved in the Nile basin 50 km northwest of Yakima, Washington, consists of a series of middle to late Miocene epiclastic and pyroclastic rock assemblages rich in porphyritic hornblende-biotite dacite. Geochemical, petrographic, and stratigraphic correlations indicate that Old Scab Mountain, a dacite porphyry intrusion, located at the western margin of the basin (lat. 46°53'30", long. 121°13'00"), is the probable source for much of the upper Ellensburg volcaniclastic material in the basin. The dacite intrusion exposed at Old Scab Mountain was emplaced at depths of 1 to 3 km and underlaid a now eroded volcanic edifice. This volcanic …

Atomic Data For Astrophysics. Ii. New Analytic Fits For Photoionization Cross Sections Of Atoms And Ions, D. A. Verner, Gary J. Ferland, K. T. Korista, D. G. Yakovlev

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We present a complete set of analytic fits to the nonrelativistic photoionization cross sections for the ground states of atoms and ions of elements from H through Si, and S, Ar, Ca, and Fe. Near the ionization thresholds, the fits are based on the Opacity Project theoretical cross sections interpolated and smoothed over resonances. At higher energies, the fits reproduce calculated Hartree-Dirac-Slater photoionization cross sections.

Effects Of Climate Change On Hypoxia In Coastal Waters: A Doubled Co2 Scenario For The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Dubravko Justic, Nancy N. Rabalais, R. Eugene Turner

Faculty Publications

Projections of general circulation models suggest that freshwater discharge from the Mississippi River to the coastal ocean will increase 20% if atmospheric CO2 concentration doubles. This result is likely to affect water column stability, surface productivity, and global oxygen cycling in the northern Gulf of Mexico, which is the site of the largest (up to 16,500 km2) and most severe hypoxic zone (liter‒1) in the western Atlantic Ocean. We use a coupled physical-biological two-box model to investigate potential effects of climate change on seasonal oxygen cycling and hypoxia in river-dominated coastal waters. The model was developed and calibrated using comprehensive …

Incoherent Scatter Radar, Ionosonde,And Satellite Measurements Of Equatorial F Region Vertical Plasma Drifts In The Evening Sector, Bela G. Fejer, E. R. De Paula, L. Scherliess, I. S. Batista

Bela G. Fejer

Studies of equatorial F region evening vertical plasma drifts using different measurement techniques have produced conflicting results. We examine the relationship of incoherent scatter radar and ionosonde drift observations over the Peruvian equatorial region, and AE-E satellite drifts for different geophysical conditions. Our data show that there is large day-to-day variability on the ratios of radar and ionosonde drifts, but on the average the measurements from these two techniques are in fair agreement during low and moderate solar flux conditions. For high solar activity, however, the Jicamarca evening drifts during equinox and December solstice are significantly larger than the ionosonde …

Efficient Heuristic Search Algorithms For Soft-Decision Decoding Of Linear Block Codes, Ching-Cheng Shih, C. R. Wulff, Carlos R.P. Hartmann, Chilukuri K. Mohan

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Technical Reports

This paper deals with maximum-likelihood soft-decision decoding as well as suboptimal soft-decision decoding of linear block codes. In this paper we present a novel and efficient hybrid decoding algorithm for (n, k) linear block codes. This algorithm consists of three new decoding algorithms: M A*, H*, and Directed Search. It hybridizes these three algorithms to take advantage of their strengths and make the decoding more efficient. The first algorithm, M A*, is a modified Algorithm A* that conducts a heuristic search through a code tree of the transmitted code when the decoding problem is transformed into a problem of graph-search …

Chromospherically Active Stars. Xv. Hd 8357=Ar Piscium, An Extremely Active Rs Cvn System, Francis C. Fekel

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

One of the first x-ray sources optically identified as a chromospherically active star, HD 8357=AR Piscium, is a double-lined binary consisting of a K1 IV primary and G7 V secondary. Careful examination of the Ca II H and K lines indicates that only the primary is active, having strong Ca II H and K, Hɛ, and Hα emission. The system has an orbital period of 14.3023 days and an eccentricity of 0.185. Such an eccentricity is not particularly unusual for chromospherically active stars with periods between 10 and 20 days. An assumed mass of 0.92Msun for the secondary results in …

First Paragraph

The STRATAFORM program sponsored by the Office of Naval Research (Nittrouer and Kravitz, 1996, this issue) seeks to understand how sedimentary processes lead to the formation of the stratigraphic sequences on continental margins. A central challenge facing this effort is to understand the transport of sediments in shore-parallel as well as shore-perpendicular directions• Multidimensionality is necessary to describe, for example, the accumulation of sediments from river inputs, the distribution of gullies and canyons on the slope, the meandering of channels, and the structure of slumps and slides.

Research Scholars in Residence

Strong laws of large numbers are given for L-statistics (linear combinations of order statistics) and for U-statistics (averages of kernels of random samples) for ergodic stationary processes, extending classical theorems of Hoeffding and of Helmers for iid sequences. Examples are given to show that strong and even weak convergence may fail if the given sufficient conditions are not satisfied, and an application is given to estimation of correlation dimension of invariant measures.

The emission and reflection spectra of GaN have been investigated in the intrinsic region and the data have been interpreted in terms of the wurtzite crystal band structure. Three intrinsic exciton transitions have been observed, one associated with each of the valence bands. Exciton excited states associated with the two top valence bands were also observed. The exciton binding energies, the band-gap energies, and the exciton Bohr radii are all reported along with the dielectric constant and the spin-orbit and crystal-field parameters for GaN.

A Combinatorial Interpretation Of Lommel Polynomials And Their Derivatives, Philip J. Feinsilver, John P. Mcsorley, René Schott

Articles and Preprints

In this paper we present interpretations of Lommel polynomials and their derivatives. A combinatorial interpretation uses matchings in graphs. This gives an interpretation for the derivatives as well. Then Lommel polynomials are considered from the point of view of operator calculus. A step-3 nilpotent Lie algebra and finite-difference operators arise in the analysis.

Boundary Conditions For Convergent Radial Tracer Tests And Effect Of Well Bore Mixing Volume, Vitaly A. Zlotnik, John David Logan

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Convergent radial flow tracer tests have a complex spatial nonaxial transport structure caused by the flow in the vicinity of the injection well and its finite mixing volume. The formulation of the boundary value problem, and especially the treatment of the boundary conditions at the injection well, is nontrivial. Hodgkinson and Lever [1983], Moench [1989, 1991], and Welty and Gelhar [1994] have developed different models and methods for the analysis of breakthrough curves in the extraction well. To extend interpretation techniques to breakthrough curves in the zone between injection and extraction wells, an analysis of conventional transport models is given, …

Nickel Doping Of Boron Carbide Grown By Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition, Seong-Don Hwang, N.B. Remmes, Peter A. Dowben, D.N. Mcilroy

Peter Dowben Publications

We have nickel doped boron carbide grown by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition. The source gas closo-1,2-dicarbadodecaborane (ortho-carborane) was used to grow the boron carbide, while nickelocene [Ni(C5H5)2] was used to introduce nickel into the growing film. The doping of nickel transformed a p-type, B5C material, relative to lightly doped n-type silicon, to an n-type material. Both n-n heterojunction diodes and n-p heterojunction diodes were constructed, using as substrates n- and p-type Si(111), respectively. With sufficient partial pressures of nickelocene in the plasma reactor, …

Marine Pore-Water Sulfate Profiles Indicate In Situ Methane Flux From Underlying Gas Hydrate, Walter S. Borowski, Charles K. Paull, William Ussler Iii

EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Marine pore-water sulfate profiles measured in piston cores are used to estimate methane flux toward the sea floor and to detect anomalous methane gradients within sediments overlying a major gas hydrate deposit at the Carolina Rise and Blake Ridge (U.S. Atlantic continental margin). Here, sulfate gradients are linear, implying that sulfate depletion is driven by methane flux from below, rather than by the flux of sedimentary organic matter from above. Thus, these linear sulfate gradients can be used to quantify and assess in situ methane flux, which is a function of the methane inventory below.
