Automation And Analysis Of Thermometric Titrations, Russel P. Linneman Ii
Automation And Analysis Of Thermometric Titrations, Russel P. Linneman Ii
Honors Theses
Over the past three years, I have been involved in the development and testing of an automated thermometric titration system for chemical research. There were three major phases in this process. The first phase consisted of modernizing the equipment and software. The second phase consisted of testing the software and equipment with a known chemical system. The third phase consisted of original research.
Binary Nucleation Kinetics. Iii. Transient Behavior And Time Lags, Barbara Ellen Wyslouzil, Gerald Wilemski
Binary Nucleation Kinetics. Iii. Transient Behavior And Time Lags, Barbara Ellen Wyslouzil, Gerald Wilemski
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
Transient binary nucleation is more complex than unary because of the bidimensionality of the cluster formation kinetics. To investigate this problem qualitatively and quantitatively, we numerically solved the birth-death equations for vapor-to-liquid phase transitions. Our previous work [J. Chem. Phys 103, 1137 (1995)] showed that the customary saddle point and growth path approximations are almost always valid in steady state gas phase nucleation and only fail if the nucleated solution phase is significantly nonideal. The current work demonstrates that in its early transient stages, binary nucleation rarely, if ever, occurs via the saddle point. This affects not only the number …

Concept Hierarchy Memory Model: A Neural Architecture For Conceptual Knowledge Representation, Learning, And Commonsense Reasoning, Ah-Hwee Tan, Hui-Shin Vivien Soon
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This article introduces a neural network based cognitive architecture termed Concept Hierarchy Memory Model (CHMM) for conceptual knowledge representation and commonsense reasoning. CHMM is composed of two subnetworks: a Concept Formation Network (CFN), that acquires concepts based on their sensory representations; and a Concept Hierarchy Network (CHN), that encodes hierarchical relationships between concepts. Based on Adaptive Resonance Associative Map (ARAM), a supervised Adaptive Resonance Theory (ART) model, CHMM provides a systematic treatment for concept formation and organization of a concept hierarchy. Specifically, a concept can be learned by sampling activities across multiple sensory fields. By chunking relations between concepts as …
Reduction And Acetylation Of 2,4-Dinitrotoluene By A Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Strain, Daniel R. Noguera, David L. Freedman
Reduction And Acetylation Of 2,4-Dinitrotoluene By A Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Strain, Daniel R. Noguera, David L. Freedman
Publications
Aerobic and anoxic biotransformation of 2,4-dinitrotoluene (DNT) was examined by using a Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain isolated from a plant treating propellant manufacturing wastewater. DNT biotransformation in the presence and absence of oxygen was mostly reductive and was representative of the type of cometabolic transformations that occur when a high concentration of an easily degradable carbon source is present. P. aeruginosa reduced both nitro groups on DNT, with the formation of mainly 4-amino-2-nitrotoluene and 2-amino-4-nitrotoluene and small quantities of 2,4-diaminotoluene. Acetylation of the arylamines was a significant reaction. 4-Acetamide-2-nitrotoluene and the novel compounds 2-acetamide-4-nitrotoluene, 4-acet-amide-2-aminotoluene, and 2,4-diacetamidetoluene were identified as DNT …

Using HST and the WFPC2 we have acquired very deep V- and I-band photometry of stars in NGC 2420 and NGC 2477 to study cluster luminosity functions at approximately solar metallicity. We have determined these cluster luminosity functions down to MI = 10.5 (0.2 M⊙) and find that the luminosity function of NGC 2420 turns over at MI ≈ 9.0, and possibly stops altogether by MI ≈ 9.5. The luminosity function of NGC 2477 may flatten at MI ≥ 9.5. We compare our open cluster luminosity functions to the solar neighborhood field star luminosity function of Kroupa, Tout \& Gilmore …

The contribution of the {sup 18}F(p,{gamma}) reaction to the production of {sup 19}Ne which is the crucial isotope for the breakout from the hot CNO cycle into the rp process, has been investigated in experiments with {sup 18}F beams. Measurements of the cross sections for the {sup 18}F(p,{alpha}){sup 15}O and the {sup 18}F(p,{gamma}){sup 19}Ne reactions indicate that the contribution from the (p,{gamma}) route to the formation of {sup 19}Ne is small.

Las Vegas Flamigo Hilton/Unlv Environmental Studies Program Environmental Resource Analysis & Optimization Plan, Dennis Nowlin
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
From 1987 through 1992 the Las Vegas Flamingo Hilton instituted resource efficiency improvements in electrical, natural gas, water and materials consumption. In 1992, the Flamingo Hilton commissioned the University of Nevada Las Vegas Environmental Studies Department to analyze and quantify the improvements made by The Flamingo Hilton and investigate the potential for further improvements.
Historical billing data from the periods 1987 - 1992 were used to analyze past and present (1992) electric, natural gas and water consumption. Materials disposal data was only available for a ten month period in 1992. Pollutant emissions data were supplied by Nevada Power Company.

The effect of perturbing the icosohedral symmetry of C60 by the addition of the side groups -O and -CH2 upon orientational order-disorder and glass transitions in solid C60 has been studied by a combination of high-resolution capacitance dilatometry and single-crystal x-ray and powder inelastic neutron scattering. Both fullerene derivatives C60O (epoxide) and C61H2 (6,5-annulene) are shown to undergo a sequence of transitions similar to that found in pure C60, i.e., a first-order orientational ordering transition just below room temperature followed by an orientational glass transition at lower temperatures. Although the …

Libsearch: A Window-Based Frontend To Remote Bibliographic Databases On The Internet, Ee Peng Lim, Soo-Yin Cheng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Over the past several years, a number of wide-area information navigation and discovery tools have been introduced, including WAIS[1], Gopher[2], World-Wide Web[3], etc. In this paper, we describe a graphical query interface to remote bibliographic databases that can be found on the internet. A library query client, called LibSearch, has been designed and implemented using a set of APIs based on Z39.50 protocol standard[4]. Z39.50 is an application-layer protocol within the OSI reference model designed to allow library users to remotely access the bibliographic records in the library systems. As increasing number of OPAC systems are being established as Z39.50 …
