Improving The Validation Of Model-Simulated Crop Yield Response To Climate Change: An Application To The Epic Model* Jour. Ser. No. 11339 Nebraska Ag. Res. Div., William E. Easterling, Xiafen Chen, Cynthia Hays, James R, Brandle, Hehui Zang

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Crop models have been used extensively to simulate yield response to various scenarios of climate change. Such simulations have been inadequately validated, limiting their utility in policy analysis. In this research, it is argued that the performance of crop models during recent years of extreme weather conditions relative to current normals may give a better indication of the validity of model simulations of crop yields in response to climate change than performance during the full range of climate conditions (as is done now). Twenty years of the climate record (1971-1990) are separated into different growing season temperature and precipitation classes …

Beach Response To Subsidence Following A Cascadia Subduction Zone Earthquake Along The Washington-Oregon Coast, Debra Lee Doyle Jun 1996

Beach Response To Subsidence Following A Cascadia Subduction Zone Earthquake Along The Washington-Oregon Coast, Debra Lee Doyle

Dissertations and Theses

Beach shoreline retreat induced by coseismic subsidence in the Cascadia subduction zone is an important post-earthquake hazard. Sand on a beach acts as a buffer to wave attack, protecting dunes, bluffs and terraces. The loss of sand from a beach could promote critical erosion of the shoreline. This study was initiated in order to estimate the potential amount of post subsidence shoreline retreat on a regional scale in the Central Cascadia Margin. The study area is a 331 km stretch of coastline from Copalis, Washington to Florence, Oregon. Several erosion models were evaluated, and the Bruun model was selected as …

Needed Narrowing As The Computational Strategy Of Evaluable Functions In An Extension Of Goedel, Bobbi J. Barry Jun 1996

Needed Narrowing As The Computational Strategy Of Evaluable Functions In An Extension Of Goedel, Bobbi J. Barry

Dissertations and Theses

A programming language that combines the best aspects of both the functional and logic paradigms with a complete evaluation strategy has been a goal of a Portland State University project team for the last several years. I present the third in a series of modifications to the compiler of the logic programming language Goedel which reaches this goal. This enhancement of Goedel's compiler translates user-defined functions in the form of rewrite rules into code that performs evaluation of these functions by the strategy of needed narrowing. In addition, Goedel's mechanism that evaluates predicates is supplemented so that needed narrowing is …

The Spectral Function Of Random Resistor Networks, Anthony Day, M. Thorpe Jun 1996

The Spectral Function Of Random Resistor Networks, Anthony Day, M. Thorpe

Anthony Roy Day

The effective complex conductivity [...] of a two-component material can be conveniently expressed as an integral transformation of a spectral function. The spectral function depends only on the geometry of the material, and can be used to calculate [...] for any particular choice of component conductivities. This is a very useful feature if the component conductivities can be varied (by changing the temperature or frequency, for example) at a fixed geometry. We present a derivation of the spectral function that identifies it as a density of states. We have made direct numerical calculations of the spectral function of two-dimensional random …

Agenda: Biodiversity Protection: Implementation And Reform Of The Endangered Species Act, University Of Colorado Boulder. Natural Resources Law Center

Biodiversity Protection: Implementation and Reform of the Endangered Species Act (Summer Conference, June 9-12)

Conference organizers and/or faculty included University of Colorado School of Law professors Betsy Rieke, David H. Getches, Michael A. Gheleta and Charles F. Wilkinson.

All across the country--in Congress, in state legislatures and in urban and rural communities--people are discussing why we should or should not protect biodiversity and how best to do so. Since the Endangered Species Act is up for reauthorization, a variety of reform proposals are being debated. Speakers--including natural resource scholars, experts from the private and nonprofit sectors, and government officials--will examine the rationale for biodiversity protection, the legal framework of the Endangered Species Act, and …

Robust Optimization Using Training Set Evolution, Tony R. Martinez, Dan A. Ventura Jun 1996

Robust Optimization Using Training Set Evolution, Tony R. Martinez, Dan A. Ventura

Faculty Publications

Training Set Evolution is an eclectic optimization technique that combines evolutionary computation (EC) with neural networks (NN). The synthesis of EC with NN provides both initial unsupervised random exploration of the solution space as well as supervised generalization on those initial solutions. An assimilation of a large amount of data obtained over many simulations provides encouraging empirical evidence for the robustness of Evolutionary Training Sets as an optimization technique for feedback and control problems.
