Charge-Dipole Model For The Universal Field Dependence Of Mobilities In Molecularly Doped Polymers, David H. Dunlap, Paul Ernest Parris, Vasudev M. Kenkre Jul 1996

Charge-Dipole Model For The Universal Field Dependence Of Mobilities In Molecularly Doped Polymers, David H. Dunlap, Paul Ernest Parris, Vasudev M. Kenkre

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Using the general result that the mobility μ, of charge carriers driven in a spatially correlated random potential by an electric field E can be expressed in terms of the Laplace transform of a particular correlation function related to the random potential, we demonstrate that the exponential dependence of μ on √E universally observed in molecularly doped polymers arises naturally from the interaction of charge carriers with randomly distributed permanent dipoles.

Contrast-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging Confirmation Of An Anterior Protein Pathway In Normal Rabbit Eyes, Nancy H. Kolodny, Thomas F. Freddo, Barbara A. Lawrence, Cristina Suarez, Stephen P. Bartels

Chemistry: Faculty Publications

Purpose: Contrast-enhanced proton magnetic resonance imaging ( 1H MRI) has been used as a quantitative, noninvasive method to corroborate a pathway for the diffusion of plasma-derived protein into the aqueous humor in the normal rabbit eye. Methods. T1-weighted magnetic resonance images were produced over 1- to 3-hour periods after the intravenous injection of gadolinium diethylenetriamine-pentaacetic acid. Results. Analysis of the images yielded the time dependence of signal enhancements within the areas of interest. The ciliary body showed an immediate sharp increase, followed by a gradual decrease in signal enhancement with time. Although a gradual increase in signal enhancement was found …

The Real Cost Of Beef: A Monetary Assessment Of The Environmental Degradation Caused By Beef Production, Carolyn Babcock Jul 1996

The Real Cost Of Beef: A Monetary Assessment Of The Environmental Degradation Caused By Beef Production, Carolyn Babcock

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The environmental degradation caused by beef production is severe. The current literature assesses the ecological damage, but falls short of assigning a per pound dollar amount to reflect the real cost of beef. In the United States, most of the environmental focus has been centered around the use of public lands for grazing and the grazing fee the government considers appropriate. The fee covers the maintenance of the grazing program, which includes maintenance of the actual land. This paper will concentrate on beef-related environmental degradation and select specific damage for monetary valuation.

Comprehensive Conjunctive-Use Management Of Connected Surface Water Groundwater Systems Using Stochastic Inputs And Uncertainties, Seshadri Suryanarayana Jul 1996

Comprehensive Conjunctive-Use Management Of Connected Surface Water Groundwater Systems Using Stochastic Inputs And Uncertainties, Seshadri Suryanarayana

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A comprehensive conjunctive-use management model is developed. The dynamics of flow and solute transport processes in connected surface water groundwater systems are integrated by a dual programming management model. The governing aquifer flow parameters and streamflows are treated as stochastic random processes. Multiple realizations of the random field are generated and are explicitly incorporated in a non-linear optimization model along with other system, environmental, and management constraints. To facilitate management of large aquifer systems, a linked simulation-optimization approach is used. The simulation program generates the response matrices for flow and transport processes. The management model then determines optimal well discharges …

Two-Dimensional Drift-Diffusion Simulations Of Silicon Avalanche Shaper (Sas) Devices For High Power Applications, Hamid Jalali Jul 1996

Two-Dimensional Drift-Diffusion Simulations Of Silicon Avalanche Shaper (Sas) Devices For High Power Applications, Hamid Jalali

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Silicon Avalanche Shaper devices have been projected as being important components of an inexpensive, semiconductor-based technology for high power switching applications. The primary advantage of this technology is that it is based on Silicon material which is easy to fabricate and has a well established processing technology. Unlike other high power technologies, the SAS devices do not rely on external optical triggering which eliminates the need for lasers and related optical circuitry.

The SAS based high power switching technology has been pioneered and tested by a Russian group. Though preliminary results have been very encouraging, the device reliability and its …

Neural Generalized Predictive Control For Real-Time Control, Donald I. Soloway Jul 1996

Neural Generalized Predictive Control For Real-Time Control, Donald I. Soloway

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis a computationally efficient Generalized Predictive Control (GPC) algorithm is presented and implemented. The algorithm is more efficient than others because the number of iterations needed for convergence is significantly lower with Newton-Raphson. The main additional cost with Newton-Raphson algorithm is the calculation of the Hessian. This overhead is not a problem because of the reduced number of iterations, making the algorithm suitable for real-time control. For nonlinear control applications, a neural network is used as a dynamical system predictor leading to a Neural Generalized Predictive Control (NGPC) algorithm which is presented in detail in this thesis. An …

Rare And Endangered Plants At Gateway National Recreation Area: A Case For Protection Of Urban Natural Areas, Richard Stalter, Michael D. Byer, John T. Tanacredi Ph.D. Jul 1996

Rare And Endangered Plants At Gateway National Recreation Area: A Case For Protection Of Urban Natural Areas, Richard Stalter, Michael D. Byer, John T. Tanacredi Ph.D.

Faculty Works: CERCOM (1977-2016)

The diversity of native plant species in urban environments is usually overlooked when biodiversity levels are considered. Inventories of native plants reveal many to be rare species surviving the harsh conditions encountered in urban ecosystems. Knowledge of their existence and an inventory of their distribution will assist in maintaining these populations. Protection strategies for rare plant species are outlined for urban National Parks.

Visual Speech Recognition Using Multiple Deformable Lip Models, Devi Chandramohan Jul 1996

Visual Speech Recognition Using Multiple Deformable Lip Models, Devi Chandramohan

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Motivated by the fact that human speech perception is a bimodal process (auditory and visual), several researchers have designed and implemented automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems consisting of both audio and visual subsystems, and shown improved performance relative to traditional purely auditory systems. Several visual speech reading approaches have used deformable templates to model the shape of a speaker's lips. Deformable templates are models of image objects, which can be deformed by adjusting a set of parameters to match the object in some optimal way, as defined by a cost function. Using a single deformable lip model has disadvantages such …

Scalability In Real-Time Systems, Ramesh Yerraballi Jul 1996

Scalability In Real-Time Systems, Ramesh Yerraballi

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

The number and complexity of applications that run in real-time environments have posed demanding requirements on the part of the real-time system designer. It has now become important to accommodate the application complexity at early stages of the design cycle. Further, the stringent demands to guarantee task deadlines (particularly in a hard real-time environment, which is the assumed environment in this thesis) have motivated both practioners and researchers to look at ways to analyze systems prior to run-time. This thesis reports a new perspective to analyzing real-time systems that in addition to ascertaining the ability of a system to meet …

Exploring Knowledge Processes For Technology Assimilation, Rochelle K. Young Jul 1996

Exploring Knowledge Processes For Technology Assimilation, Rochelle K. Young

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In the emerging knowledge society, the ability to make the experience and expertise of those involved in and affected by new technology unconditionally available to all members of an organization is becoming increasingly important. One of the problems in developing such knowledge processes for technology assimilation is that current social structures do not easily accommodate unconditional participation. Since the implementation of modern information technology is changing the workplace and the nature of work itself, alternative social structures are needed. This research takes as given that deep questions concerning knowledge processes and social transformation are in principle undecidable; and, only questions …

Optimality And Construction Of Designs With Generalized Group Divisible Structure, Sudesh K. Srivastav Jul 1996

Optimality And Construction Of Designs With Generalized Group Divisible Structure, Sudesh K. Srivastav

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

This thesis is an investigation of the optimality and construction problems attendant to the assignment of v treatments to experimental units in b blocks of size k, paying special attention to settings for which equal replication of the treatments is not possible. The model is that of one way elimination of heterogeneity, in which the expectation of an observation on treatment i in block j is Ti + βj (treatment effect + block effect), where Ti and βj are unknown constants, 1 ≤ i ≤ v and 1 ≤ j ≤ b. All observations are assumed to …

Reactions Of Aqueous Chlorine With Alanylphenylalanine In Model Solutions And In A Wastewater, Thomas C. Fox Jul 1996

Reactions Of Aqueous Chlorine With Alanylphenylalanine In Model Solutions And In A Wastewater, Thomas C. Fox

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

Model solutions of the dipeptide alanylphenylalanine were chlorinated to four different chlorine-to-amino nitrogen (Cl2/Ala-Phe) mole ratios and analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography. At mole ratios ≤ 1, N-chloroalanylphenylalanine was the only major product. As the Cl2/Ala-Phe mole ratio was increased to ≥ 2, N,N-dichloroalanylphenylalanine was the only major product. In model solutions (pH 7.0) the dichlorinated dipeptide decomposed (t1/2= 4.1 hr) to form a stable N-chloroketimine, which has a half-life of 125 hours. This N-chloroketimine then decomposed to form phenylalanine.

To follow these reactions in a wastewater, alanyl-p-[ …

Direct Dating Of Deformation; U-Pb Age Of Syndeformational Sphene Growth In The Proterozoic Laramie Peak Shear Zone, Phillip G. Resor, Kevin R. Chamberlain, Carol D. Frost, B Ronald Frost, Arthur W. Snoke Jun 1996

Direct Dating Of Deformation; U-Pb Age Of Syndeformational Sphene Growth In The Proterozoic Laramie Peak Shear Zone, Phillip G. Resor, Kevin R. Chamberlain, Carol D. Frost, B Ronald Frost, Arthur W. Snoke

Phillip G Resor

In this paper, we show that deformation can be dated by combining mesoscopic and microscopic structural observations with an understanding of metamorphic mineral reactions and U-Pb ages of newly grown sphene (titanite). This approach can be used on a variety of rock types that have been deformed at a wide range of metamorphic conditions. In an example from the Proterozoic Laramie Peak shear zone of southeastern Wyoming, a single period of syntectonic sphene growth in sheared mafic dikes is documented both by a strong spatial relationship between deformation and metamorphism and by sphene microtextures. U-Pb analyses of sphene separates give …

Light Front Qcd In (1+1)-Dimensions Coupled To Chiral Adjoint Fermions, David G. Robertson, Stephen S. Pinksy Jun 1996

Light Front Qcd In (1+1)-Dimensions Coupled To Chiral Adjoint Fermions, David G. Robertson, Stephen S. Pinksy

Physics Faculty Scholarship

We consider SU(N) gauge theory in 1+1 dimensions coupled to chiral fermions in the adjoint representation of the gauge group. With all fields in the adjoint representation the gauge group is actually , which possesses nontrivial topology. In particular, there are N distinct topological sectors and the physical vacuum state has a structure analogous to a θ vacuum. We show how this feature is realized in light-front quantization for the case N = 2, using discretization as an infrared regulator. In the discretized form of the theory the nontrivial vacuum structure is associated with the zero momentum mode of the …

Ffts For The 2-Sphere-Improvements And Variations, D M. Healy, D Rockmore, Sean S.B. Moore Jun 1996

Ffts For The 2-Sphere-Improvements And Variations, D M. Healy, D Rockmore, Sean S.B. Moore

Computer Science Technical Reports

Earlier work by Driscoll and Healy has produced an efficient algorithm for computing the Fourier transform of band-limited functions on the 2-sphere. In this paper we present a reformulation and variation of the original algorithm which results in a greatly improved inverse transform, and consequent improved convolution algorithm for such functions. All require at most 0(N log2 N) operations where N is the number of sample points. We also address implementation considerations and give heuristics for allowing reliable floating point implementations of a slightly modified algorithm at little cost in either theoretical or actual performance. These claims are supported by …

Modeling Of The Processing And Removal Of Trace Gas And Aerosol Species By Arctic Radiation Fogs And Comparison With Measurements, M H. Bergin, S N. Pandis, C Davidson, J L. Jaffrezo, Jack E. Dibb, A G. Russell, H D. Kuhns Jun 1996

Kuhns

Earth Sciences

A Lagrangian radiation fog model is applied to a fog event at Summit, Greenland. The model simulates the formation and dissipation of fog. Included in the model are detailed gas and aqueous phase chemistry, and deposition of chemical species with fog droplets. Model predictions of the gas phase concentrations of H2O2, HCOOH, SO2, and HNO3 as well as the fog fluxes of S(VI), N(V), H2O2, and water are compared with measurements. The predicted fluxes of S(VI), N(V), H2O2, and fog water generally agree with measured …

Evidence For Binary Orbital Motion Of A Quasar Broad-Line Region, C. Martin Gaskell Jun 1996

Evidence For Binary Orbital Motion Of A Quasar Broad-Line Region, C. Martin Gaskell

C. Martin Gaskell Publications

Analysis of spectra of the quasar 3C 390.3 covering a period of over 20 yr shows that the blueshifted peak of H beta has been changing its radial velocity at an almost constant rate during this time. The radial velocity has increased by over 1500 km/s. The lower limit to the period of radial velocity changes is 210 yr. Although very long periods cannot be excluded by the radial velocity curve alone, other considerations suggest that the period is about 300 yr. If the radial velocity changes are due to orbital motion, the radius of the orbit is about 0.3 …

A Test Of The Lauer-Postman Bulk Flow, Riccardo Giovanelli, Martha P. Haynes, Gary Wegner, Luiz N. Da Costa Jun 1996

A Test Of The Lauer-Postman Bulk Flow, Riccardo Giovanelli, Martha P. Haynes, Gary Wegner, Luiz N. Da Costa

Dartmouth Scholarship

We use Tully-Fisher distances for a sample of field late spiral galaxies to test the Lauer & Postman result suggestive of a bulk flow with respect to the cosmic microwave background reference frame, of amplitude of +689 km s-1 in the direction l = 343°, b = +52°. A total of 432 galaxies are used, subdivided between two cones, of 30° semiaperture each and pointed toward the apex and antapex of the LP motion, respectively. The peculiar velocities in the two data sets are inconsistent with a bulk flow of the amplitude claimed by Lauer & Postman. When combined …

On The Existence Of Schedules That Are Near-Optimal For Both Makespan And Total Weighted Completion Time, Cliff Stein, Joel Wein Jun 1996

On The Existence Of Schedules That Are Near-Optimal For Both Makespan And Total Weighted Completion Time, Cliff Stein, Joel Wein

Computer Science Technical Reports

We give a simple proof that, for any instance of a very general class of scheduling problems, there exists a schedule of makespan at most twice that of the optimal possible and of total weighted completion time at most twice that of the optimal possible. We then refine the analysis, yielding variants of this theorem with improved constants, and give some algorithmic consequences of the technique.

Synthesis Of Higher Α-Chlorovinyl And Α-Bromovinyl Amino Acids: The Amino Protecting Group Determines The Reaction Course, David B. Berkowitz, Michelle L. Pedersen, Wan Jin Jahng Jun 1996

Synthesis Of Higher Α-Chlorovinyl And Α-Bromovinyl Amino Acids: The Amino Protecting Group Determines The Reaction Course, David B. Berkowitz, Michelle L. Pedersen, Wan Jin Jahng

Chemistry Department: Faculty Publications

N-Trifluoroacetyl α-vinyl amino esters are smoothly converted to the corresponding α-chlorovinyl or α-bromovinyl amino esters through the agency of phenyselenyl chloride or phenylselenyl bromide, respectively, followed by oxidation and pyrolysis. Exclusively the (E)-extemal halovinyl isomer and the internal halovinyl isomer are observed. The amino protecting group is a critical determinant of the reaction course (alkene addition vs. 5-exo-trig-like cyclization).

Experimental Evidence For Self-Similar Structures In The Aggregation Of Porphyrins In Aqueous Solutions, F. Mallamace, N. Micali, S. Trusso, L. M. Scolaro, A. Romeo, A. Terracina, Robert F. Pasternack

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works

We have studied the aggregation of the porphyrin t-H₂Pagg in aqueous solution by light scattering. The intensity profile of the elastically scattered light, studied in the exchanged wave-vector range 0.2 ≤ q ≤ 31.4 μ m⁻¹, indicates that the aggregation produces large monodisperse clusters having a fractal structure, and is driven by diffusion-limited aggregation kinetics. Additional measurements performed at different q values confirm such a picture giving a hydrodynamic radius R(H) consistent with the radius of gyration R(g) measured by elastic scattering. This is explained taking into account the q² dependence observed in the mean decay rate of the intensity-intensity …

Cleavage Of Dna By The Insulin-Mimetic Compound, Nh4[Vo(O2)2(Phen)], Catharina Hiort, Jerry Goodisman, James C. Dabrowiak Jun 1996

Cleavage Of Dna By The Insulin-Mimetic Compound, Nh4[Vo(O2)2(Phen)], Catharina Hiort, Jerry Goodisman, James C. Dabrowiak

Chemistry - All Scholarship

The kinetics and mechanism of cleavage of DNA by the insulin-mimetic peroxo-vanadate NH4[VO(O2)2(phen)], pV, are described. In the presence of low energy UV radiation or biologically common reducing agents, pV decomposes into the monomer, dimer, and tetramer of vanadate and an uncharacterized compound of V4+ as shown by 51V NMR, ESR, and absorption spectra. The rate of photodecomposition of pV is reduced in the presence of calf thymus DNA, indicating that a decomposition product of the peroxo-vanadate, that is important in the destruction pathway of the complex, is interacting with DNA. This species, probably a short-lived complex of V4+, may …

The exactly solvable model which describes the dynamics of transformation of conduction electrons into nonlinear charge-carrying excitations of charge-density waves in quasi-one-dimensional Peierls-Frohlich conductors is formulated and studied by the inverse scattering transformation method. The pair of self-trapped conduction electrons transform into a charged 2π kink localized in a single conducting chain and surrounded by dipoles in neighboring chains.
