Chromospherically Active Stars. Xvi. The Double-Lined Binary 42 Capricorni, Francis C. Fekel

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

New spectroscopic observations of the chromospherically active binary, 42 Capricorni, have resulted in the detection of lines of the secondary, improved orbital elements, and the determination of fundamental properties of the components. 42 Cap has an orbital period of 13.174004 d, an eccentricity of 0.176, and a mass ratio A/B of 1.375. No evidence for a variation of the center-of-mass velocity, suggested by earlier investigators, has been found. Spectral types of the primary and secondary are G1 IV and G2 V, respectively. The V mag difference of 1.94 and HIPPARCOS parallax result in MV = 2.79 mag for A and …

Preliminary Investigation Of The Extent And Effects Of Sediment Contamination In White Lake Near Whitehall Leather Tannery, Richard Rediske, Gary Fahnenstiel, Tom Nalepa, Peter Meier, Claire Schelske Dec 1997

Preliminary Investigation Of The Extent And Effects Of Sediment Contamination In White Lake Near Whitehall Leather Tannery, Richard Rediske, Gary Fahnenstiel, Tom Nalepa, Peter Meier, Claire Schelske

Scientific Technical Reports

By using a combination of chemistry, toxicological evaluation, ecological analysis, and radiodating, this investigation has defined the ecological effects and the nature and extent of sediment contamination in the Tannery Bay area of eastern White Lake. The sediments in Tannery Bay represent a source of chromium transport for most of the eastern basin of White Lake. The recent deposition of chromium contaminated sediments exceeding 500 mg/kg in down gradient locations shows that export processes are responsible for the movement of this material from Tannery Bay. Arsenic and mercury appear to be less mobile and are retained in the sediments of …

Assessment Of The Record Of The 1982 El Chichón Eruption As Preserved In Greenland Snow, Gregory A. Zielinski, Jack E. Dibb, Qinzhao Yang, Paul A. Mayewski, Sallie I. Whitlow, Mark S. Twickler, Mark S. Germani Dec 1997

Assessment Of The Record Of The 1982 El Chichón Eruption As Preserved In Greenland Snow, Gregory A. Zielinski, Jack E. Dibb, Qinzhao Yang, Paul A. Mayewski, Sallie I. Whitlow, Mark S. Twickler, Mark S. Germani

Earth Sciences

Variability in the SO4 2- and Cl- time series for the 1980s from 12 shallow snow pits across the Greenland ice sheet is used to evaluate the record of the 1982 El Chichón eruption and the potential for recording a moderate northern equatorial eruption in a single Greenland ice core. Composition of volcanic glass found in spring 1983 snow in one of the pits in the Summit region matches that from El Chichón glass, thereby verifying the deposition of material from the eruption. High Na+ and Cl- concentrations in this same layer probably represent deposition of the reaction products of …

Temporal And Spatial Variability Of Snow Accumulation In Central Greenland, H Kuhns, C Davidson, Jack E. Dibb, C Stearns, M H. Bergin, J L. Jaffrezo

Earth Sciences

Snow accumulation records from central Greenland are explored to improve the understanding of the accumulation signal in Greenland ice core records. Results from a “forest” of 100 bamboo poles and automated accumulation monitors in the vicinity of Summit as well as shallow cores collected in the Summit and Crete areas are presented. Based on these accumulation data, a regression has been calculated to quantify the signal-to-noise variance ratio of ice core accumulation signals on a variety of temporal (1 week to 2 years) and spatial (20 m to 200 km) scales. Results are consistent with data obtained from year-round automated …

The Stable Manifold Theorem For Sde's (Stochastic Analysis Seminar, Msri), Salah-Eldin A. Mohammed

Miscellaneous (presentations, translations, interviews, etc)

I gave the following two talks at the Stochastic Analysis Seminar at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute, Berkeley, California. The two talks describe recent joint work with Michael Scheutzow.

FIRST TALK:

THE STABLE MANIFOLD THEOREM FOR SDE'S , Part I

Wednesday, December 3, 1997, 11:00-12:00 am, MSRI Lecture Hall.

In this talk, we formulate a local stable manifold theorem for stochastic differential equations in Euclidean space, driven by multi-dimensional Brownian motion. We introduce the concept of hyperbolicity for stationary trajectories of a SDE. This is done using the Oseledec muliplicative ergodic theorem on the linearized SDE around the stationary …

Exotic Mesons In Quenched Lattice Qcd, James E. Hetrick, C. Bernard Dec 1997

Exotic Mesons In Quenched Lattice Qcd, James E. Hetrick, C. Bernard

All Faculty Articles - School of Engineering and Computer Science

Since gluons in QCD are interacting fundamental constituents just as quarks are, we expect that in addition to mesons made from a quark and an antiquark, there should also be glueballs and hybrids (bound states of quarks, antiquarks and gluons). In general, these states would mix strongly with the conventional q-bar-q mesons. However, they can also have exotic quantum numbers inaccessible to q-bar-q mesons. Confirmation of such states would give information on the role of "dynamical" color in low energy QCD. In the quenched approximation we present a lattice calculation of the masses of mesons with exotic quantum numbers. These …

The computer program that was used to generate the graphs for the concentration of inhibitor contained an error. This influenced the scaling in the original Figures 2 and 3. As an example, a sample of the corrected graphs are given below. Copies of other corrected figures can be obtained from the authors. It is important to note that the “pulse” appears for the function rC(r, t). As can be seen, it travels slowly outward with decreasing amplitude. The mathematical analysis in the paper remains unchanged.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We consider the hyperfine structure, the atomic spectrum, and the decay channels of the bound μ+μ- system (dimuonium). The annihilation lifetimes of low-lying atomic states of the system lie in the 10-12 s range. The decay rates could be measured by detection of the decay products (high-energy photons or electron-positron pairs). The hyperfine-structure splitting of the dimuonic system and its decay rate are influenced by electronic vacuum polarization effects in the far timelike asymptotic region. This constitutes a previously unexplored kinematic regime. We evaluate next-to-leading-order radiative corrections to the decay rate of low-lying atomic states. We …

On Multiple Solutions Of A Nonlinear Dirichlet Problem, Alfonso Castro, Jorge Cossio, John M. Neuberger

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

We prove that a semilinear elliptic boundary value problem has five solutions when the range of the derivative of the nonlinearity includes at least the first two eigenvalues. We also prove that if the region is a ball the semilinear elliptic problem has two solutions that change sign and are nonradial.

An Examination Of Multi-Tier Designs For Legacy Data Access, Michael L. Acker Dec 1997

An Examination Of Multi-Tier Designs For Legacy Data Access, Michael L. Acker

Theses and Dissertations

This work examines the application of Java and the Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) to support access to remote databases via the Internet. The research applies these software technologies to assist an Air Force distance learning provider in improving the capabilities of its World Wide Web-based correspondence system. An analysis of the distance learning provider's operation revealed a strong dependency on a non-collocated legacy relational database. This dependency limits the distance learning provider's future web-based capabilities. A recommendation to improve operation by data replication is proposed, and the implementation details are provided for two alternative test systems that support …

An Incompleteness Handling Methodology For Validation Of Bayesian Knowledge Bases, David J. Bawcom Dec 1997

An Incompleteness Handling Methodology For Validation Of Bayesian Knowledge Bases, David J. Bawcom

Theses and Dissertations

The PESKI (Probabilities, Expert Systems, Knowledge, and Inference) system attempts to address some of the problems in expert system design through the use of the Bayesian Knowledge Base (BKB) representation. Knowledge gathered from a domain expert is placed into this framework and inferencing is performed over it. However, by the nature of BKBs, not all knowledge is incorporated, i.e. the representation need not be a complete representation of all combinations and possibilities of the knowledge, as this would be impractical in many real-world systems. Therefore, inherent in such a system is the problem of incomplete knowledge, or spaces within the …

Developing A Corpus Specific Stoplist Using Quantitative Comparison, Craig N. Berg

Theses and Dissertations

We have become overwhelmed with electronic information and it seems our situation is not going to improve. It is becoming increasingly common for people to work with information on a daily basis. We seem to spend more and more time looking for information, and it is taking longer because more information is available. This thesis will look at how we can provide faster access to the information we want to find. Today's requirements are closely related to searching for information using queries. At the heart of the query process is the removal of search terms having little or no significance …

An Investigation Of Plume Rise From Titan Iv Rocket Launches, Joseph D. Brands Dec 1997

An Investigation Of Plume Rise From Titan Iv Rocket Launches, Joseph D. Brands

Theses and Dissertations

Space launches at Cape Canaveral Air Station (CCAS) and Vandenberg Air Force Base (vAFB) produce exhaust ground clouds from the solid rocket boosters and liquid hypergolic fuels containing several toxic substances. In order to estimate the health effects that would be imposed upon the public by scheduled launches, range safety officials rely on the Rocket Exhaust Effluent Diffusion Model to predict ground level concentrations of these substances. A drawback to the REEDM is its underprediction of the initial ground clouds stabilization height. This underprediction causes an overprediction of the ground level toxic substance concentrations. This thesis focused on increasing the …

Applications Of Unsupervised Clustering Algorithms To Aircraft Identification Using High Range Resolution Radar, Dzung Tri Pham Dec 1997

Applications Of Unsupervised Clustering Algorithms To Aircraft Identification Using High Range Resolution Radar, Dzung Tri Pham

Theses and Dissertations

Identification of aircraft from high range resolution (HRR) radar range profiles requires a database of information capturing the variability of the individual range profiles as a function of viewing aspect. This database can be a collection of individual signatures or a collection of average signatures distributed over the region of viewing aspect of interest. An efficient database is one which captures the intrinsic variability of the HRR signatures without either excessive redundancy typical of single-signature databases, or without the loss of information common when averaging arbitrary groups of signatures. The identification of 'natural' clustering of similar HRR signatures provides a …

Photoluminescence Study Of Gan Implanted With Erbium And Erbium-Oxygen, Lori R. Everitt Dec 1997

Photoluminescence Study Of Gan Implanted With Erbium And Erbium-Oxygen, Lori R. Everitt

Theses and Dissertations

Erbium emits at 1540 nm, which propagates well through fiber optic cables. This work studies the photoluminescence (PL) from GaN, GaN implanted with Er alone, and GaN implanted with both Er and O as functions of excitation laser energy and sample temperature. When the exciton bound to a neutral donor recombined, a photon was emitted at 3.47 eV. A photon emitted at 3.457 eV may have been evidence of the recombination of an exciton bound to a neutral acceptor. Second, the Er-ion transitions were observed in two groups around 0.805 and 1.25 eV. The PL intensity was measured at four …

Three-Dimensional Camera Calibration Technique For Stereo Imaging Velocimetry Experiments, Mark D. Bethea, James A. Lock, Frank Merat, Paul Crouser Dec 1997

Three-Dimensional Camera Calibration Technique For Stereo Imaging Velocimetry Experiments, Mark D. Bethea, James A. Lock, Frank Merat, Paul Crouser

Physics Faculty Publications

A three-dimensional camera calibration technique is developed by combining two, 2-D camera calibrations for an orthogonal stereo viewing geometry. The left camera view (YZ view) and the right camera view (XZ view) are calibrated separately and then combined to produce an XYZ (3-D) calibration routine, Our technique employs three parallel calibration planes. One is placed along the main diagonal of the cubic experimental chamber, and the other two planes are placed known distances in front of it and behind it within the chamber. Both cameras view the calibration points on the planes simultaneously. Given the coordinates of a number of …

Storm Surges In The Region Of Western Alaska, Warren Blier, Stanley Keefe, Wilson Shaffer, Sung C. Kim Dec 1997

Storm Surges In The Region Of Western Alaska, Warren Blier, Stanley Keefe, Wilson Shaffer, Sung C. Kim

VIMS Articles

Within the period of the historical record there have been several occurrences of extensive damage from storm-surge-related coastal flooding in the region of Nome, Alaska. The most recent of these events, although by no means the most destructive, occurred in association with the storm of 5–6 October 1992. Despite the small population of Nome (approximately 4000 people), total damage costs exceeded $6 million. The research into the nature and causes of such flooding events has focused on this October 1992 case. The authors have, however, also examined a weaker, shorter-duration event that occurred on 20 August 1993 and, for contrast, …

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science, together with other state agencies, has a continuing interest in preserving the coastline of Virginia, particularly, the Atlantic coastline in the vicinity of the resort city of Virginia Beach. Because a well maintained beach can serve several purposes , e.g., ( 1) providing public recreational areas, (2) protecting valuable properties that are located near coastline , and (3) reducing the rate of land loss, a great deal of efforts has been devoted to understand the processes that affect the change of shoreline. Among several erosion forces , waves are especially important elements as they …

A System Dynamics Model Of The Bioavailability Of Metals In Constructed Wetland Sediment, Timothy S. Wood Dec 1997

A System Dynamics Model Of The Bioavailability Of Metals In Constructed Wetland Sediment, Timothy S. Wood

Theses and Dissertations

Constructed wetlands used for storm water treatment accumulate metals primarily in their sediment. This sediment has the potential to produce toxic effects in benthic organisms at some period in time. Bioavailability of metals in sediment is directly linked to pore water metal activity. The mechanisms that influence pore water metal activity are included in physical, chemical, and biological processes. A system dynamics model was developed to represent these processes and the major influences affecting pore water metal activity in a treatment wetland receiving storm water influent. The model structure and behavior was tested and validated using several system dynamics validation …

Pseudorandom Code Generation For Communication And Navigation System Applications, John F. Brendle Jr. Dec 1997

Pseudorandom Code Generation For Communication And Navigation System Applications, John F. Brendle Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

This research project investigated the design, construction and evaluation of a pseudorandom code generator for communication and navigation system applications. These types of codes include spreading codes, Gold codes, Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) ranging codes, syncopated codes, and nonlinear codes. Such waveforms are typically used in communication and navigation system applications. The code generator uses the Stanford Telecom STEL-1032 Pseudorandom Number (PRN) coder. A coder interface was designed and constructed for manual data entry to the registers of the PRN coder. The code generator is capable of independently clocking and generating all possible codes with lengths up to 4,294,967,295 bits. …
