Design And Implementation Of On-Line Metrics, Ashok Vantipalli May 1997

Design And Implementation Of On-Line Metrics, Ashok Vantipalli

Theses

The performance of a software product plays an important role in the software industry to survive the tough competition given by the other software vendors. The real test for a software product starts after its release when it is extensively used by the end users and in different environments. And the software goes through a number of tests by the end users which can be very different and insufficient from the regression tests the software vendor performed on it. This critical issue; requires each vendor to have a department mainly dealing with the testing and analysing the performance of a …

Solomon's Sea And The Biblical Π, Andrew Simoson May 1997

Solomon's Sea And The Biblical Π, Andrew Simoson

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1997

From I Kings 7:23, the apparent diameter and circumference of a circular ring are given as 10 and 30 cubits which suggests that the Biblical value of π is 3 rather a number closer to π. However we recount seven different somewhat whimsical explanations as to why this conclusion is overly-hasty.

Mathematics And Values: Can Philosophy Guide Projects?, Michael H. Veatch May 1997

Mathematics And Values: Can Philosophy Guide Projects?, Michael H. Veatch

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1997

The philosophy of mathematics has provided insight on questions of foundations and mathematical truth; however, it has not been very fruitful in guiding the practice of mathematics. This paper attempts to find points of contact between a Christian worldview and the choice of mathematical projects and methods. Three areas are considered: (i) dubitability in current research, (ii) the intrinsic value of contemporary mathematics to contemporary society, and (iii) the affirmation of human value in the use of mathematics. Finally, a framework for valuing mathematics is proposed as an encouragement to think more deeply about how a Christian might choose a …

The Mathematical Sciences And The Mediator Of Creation, W. David Laverell May 1997

The Mathematical Sciences And The Mediator Of Creation, W. David Laverell

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1997

This article stems from a conviction that while the development of a theistic view of the mathematical sciences is a laudable goal and much to be encouraged, it is incumbent upon us to explore every avenue that might lead to a distinctively Christian perspective. This leads naturally to a consideration of the unique role played by Christ in Creation, and a convenient framework is provided by seeing Christ as Mediator of Creation. We shall discuss the term itself, examine the biblical passages that seem to present the concept, consider the ways these passages have been understood by theologians, and …

Digital Filtering And Smoothing: A Student Simulation Project, Eric Gossett May 1997

Digital Filtering And Smoothing: A Student Simulation Project, Eric Gossett

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1997

A bug tracking problem is used to introduce students to filtering and smoothing real-time data. A predictor-corrector filter/smoother algorithm is developed and a simulation platform is provided so that students can program and test implementations of the filter/smoother. The platform includes the ability to animate the simulation.

The tracking problem: A small computer bug is traveling around the $x-y$ plane trying to avoid detection. We can eliminate the bug if we can produce a reasonably accurate approximation to its trajectory.

We have a bug detecting device which can be pointed at the plane. It can measure the $x$ and $y$ …

Mathematics At Chartres Cathedral, Richard Stout May 1997

Mathematics At Chartres Cathedral, Richard Stout

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1997

Having had several opportunities to travel to France, often with groups of students, our trips have usually included a visit to Chartres, especially to visit the magnificent Gothic cathedral that dominates the town. On a recent visit I was again struck by the beauty, majesty and awe that the cathedral inspires. The building not only does a remarkable job of telling Biblical stories and of enclosing a space conducive to worship, it directs one's eyes and one's spirits upward. This is achieved not only by the beautiful stained glass windows and the striking sculptures, but also by the overall design …

An Investigation Of The Behavior Of Calculus Students Working Collaboratively In An Interactive Software Environment, Angela Hare May 1997

An Investigation Of The Behavior Of Calculus Students Working Collaboratively In An Interactive Software Environment, Angela Hare

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1997

Recent work in the area of cognitive research in mathematics education focuses on detailed examinations of the learning process of students and how this process is affected by current innovations in the classroom, including collaborative learning and the use of computers and interactive software. Much of this work is supported by the learning framework of constructivism, a school of thought which is based on the work and writings of Jean Piaget. Piaget, a French psychologist in the mid-twentieth century, observed the learning behavior of children and concluded that individuals construct their own knowledge by creating mental structures which explain their …

Using Java And Html For Linear Algebra Instruction, Jonathan R. Senning May 1997

Using Java And Html For Linear Algebra Instruction, Jonathan R. Senning

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1997

This paper addresses some of the issues involved with using the HTML, JavaScript and Java to develop and serve a sequence of laboratory modules for use in teaching linear algebra. Attention is paid to the rationale for this approach as opposed to the more traditional approach of laboratory exercises executed using MATLAB or some similar computational tool. Several methods to display mathematics with HTML are described. Some implementation detail and a brief description of the HTML and Java based Linear Algebra Visualization Assistant (LAVA) is presented.

Fractal Geometry And Chaos Theory: From Old Problems To New Models And Methods, Terence H. Perciante May 1997

Fractal Geometry And Chaos Theory: From Old Problems To New Models And Methods, Terence H. Perciante

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1997

Fractal geometry and chaos theory are deeply rooted in significant problems in the history of mathematics and science. While mathematicians have geometrical descriptions of space with its properties, scientists have attempted to characterize the physical properties of fundamental entities present in space and time. The separate investigations frequently influenced each other and led to profound theories, answers, and models. However, at the same time new problems repeatedly arose internal to mathematics and externally in the applications to which mathematics was applied. Fractal geometry issues from these antecedents in response to features and processes in nature not easily represented by historical …

Admission Control Policies For Internet File Transfer Protocols, Simon Holmes A Court May 1997

Admission Control Policies For Internet File Transfer Protocols, Simon Holmes A Court

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

Server congestion is a major cause of frustration with the Internet. It is not uncommon for a server with a new release of popular software to be swamped by many times more clients than it can possibly handle. Current Internet file transfer protocols, namely FTP and HTTP, do not have any policy to regulate client admission. In this thesis we are concerned with server admission policies that will improve clients' experience with servers under heavy load. Using a purpose-built network simulator, we compare the prevalent protocols with two new protocols that include policies taken from processor scheduling. By applying more …

An Information Retrieval System For Performing Hierarchical Document Clustering, Eric Hagen May 1997

An Information Retrieval System For Performing Hierarchical Document Clustering, Eric Hagen

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

This thesis presents a system for web-based information retrieval that supports precise and informative post-query organization (automated document clustering by topic) to decrease real search time on the part of the user. Most existing Information Retrieval systems depend on the user to perform intelligent, specific queries with Boolean operators in order to minimize the set of returned documents. The user essentially must guess the appropriate keywords before performing the query. Other systems use a vector space model which is more suitable to performing the document similarity operations which permit hierarchical clustering of returned documents by topic. This allows "post query" …

User studies show that this tool is natural to use.

Syntheses And Characterizations Of Unsymmetrical Porphyrins As Photosensitizers For A Solid-State Solar Cell, Yinping Zhao May 1997

Syntheses And Characterizations Of Unsymmetrical Porphyrins As Photosensitizers For A Solid-State Solar Cell, Yinping Zhao

Dissertations and Theses

Solar light is the most important source of regenerative energy and represents mankind's only inexhaustible energy source. One of today's most promising tools to make use of solar energy is its direct conversion into electrical energy in a photovoltaic cell. The practical use of these solar cells depends on the price of the devices and therefore of the obtained energy. The conventional silicon cells, although efficient, are expensive for common consumer applications. The Grätzel cell is a photovoltaic system for harvesting the sun's energy that operates at about 10-15% overall efficiency, like a conventional solar cell, but does it at …

Effects Of Tunneling Electrons And Local Field On Nanometer Region Solid / Liquid Interfacial Reactions ——Potential Controlled Stm Induced Nanoscale Modification Of H Terminated Si(111) Surfaces, Zhaoxiong Cai Xiongwei Xie, Caihui Shi, Bingwei Mao, Zhaowu Tian May 1997

Effects Of Tunneling Electrons And Local Field On Nanometer Region Solid / Liquid Interfacial Reactions ——Potential Controlled Stm Induced Nanoscale Modification Of H Terminated Si(111) Surfaces, Zhaoxiong Cai Xiongwei Xie, Caihui Shi, Bingwei Mao, Zhaowu Tian

Journal of Electrochemistry

H terminated n Si(111) surface was found to be etched in 0.5% HF solution in nanometer scale while scanning the STM tip when the substrate potential was somehow lower than the open circuit potential at tunneling condition of V b=+1.0 V (tip positive), I t=1 nA. Much more stable Si surface was achievable at potentials much more negative than the open circuit potential (such as 500 mV negative to OCP) under the same tunneling condition. Furthermore, the etching rete at less negative potential was found to be somehow related to the tunneling current. These results indicate that the STM induced …

The electrodeposition of Ni Mo alloy was studied by cylic voltammetry and potential step experiment. It was shown that Ni Mo alloy is formed by mechanism involving progressive nucleation followed by three dimensional growth of the metal centres. The complex plane impedance plots indicate codeposition of Ni Mo …

Electroluminescence Of Photoelectrochemically Etched N + Si, Guozheng Li, Chengqian Zhang, Xiumei Yang May 1997

Electroluminescence Of Photoelectrochemically Etched N + Si, Guozheng Li, Chengqian Zhang, Xiumei Yang

Journal of Electrochemistry

Porous silicon with micrometer size pores, which is made on n + Si by photoelectrochemically etched, has electroluminescent property. Each monochromic intensity and wavelength range of luminescent spectra depend on polarized potential. The intersity and the stability of cathodic electroluminescence is high than those of anodic one. Voltammetric behavior before quenching indicated that the electrochemical reactions of some surface species are involved in except the reduction of S 2O 2- 8, which leads to radiative recombination. The energy band diagram based on n + Si (E g=1.1 eV)/PS(E g=1.8 eV) junction is proposed.

Journal of Electrochemistry

In this report, we present a novel analytical focusing electrophoresis technique. The principle of the technique is based on the mobility differences and has been proved successfully in our laboratory. The technique is of the same applicability as that of CZE, not limited to the protein like big molecules, with greatly improved efficiency of separation and enrichment. Advantages of this novel technique are:1. Since large volume of dilute sample solution can be injected and very narrow and concentrated zones can be obtained, extremely dilute sample can be analyzed by this novel technique in comparison with CZE. 2. Instead of with …

Electrodeposition Of Amorphous Fe Cr Alloy Coating, Danhong Cheng, Weiyi Xu, Yiqin Qin, Liqun Hua, Zhongyan Zhang May 1997

Electrodeposition Of Amorphous Fe Cr Alloy Coating, Danhong Cheng, Weiyi Xu, Yiqin Qin, Liqun Hua, Zhongyan Zhang

Journal of Electrochemistry

The amorphous Fe Cr alloy coatings were obtained by controlling the composition of bath operation conditions. It was found that the pH value, the current density and the content of chromium in Fe Cr alloy coatings effect the amorphous structure of the coatings. The result of anodic polarization shows that the corrosion resistance of the amorphous coatings in acidic media is higher than the corrosion resistance of the crystal ones.
