Larger Board Size And Decreasing Firm Value In Small Firms, Theodore Eisenberg, Stefan Sundgren, Martin T. Wells Apr 1998

Larger Board Size And Decreasing Firm Value In Small Firms, Theodore Eisenberg, Stefan Sundgren, Martin T. Wells

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Several studies hypothesize a relation between board size and financial performance. Empirical tests of the relation exist in only a few studies of large U.S. firms. We find a significant negative correlation between board size and profitability in a sample of small and midsize Finnish firms. Finding a board-size effect for a new and different class of firms affects the range of explanations for the board-size effect.

Vertical Resistivity Electrode Arrays For Detecting Hydrocarbon Movement And Content In Sands, Kirt Elliott Apr 1998

Vertical Resistivity Electrode Arrays For Detecting Hydrocarbon Movement And Content In Sands, Kirt Elliott

Masters Theses

In many contamination sites where hydrocarbon is involved an accurate thickness of the contaminant can not be achieved through the most commonly used methods. The purpose of this study is to find an alternate method of determining a precise thickness and monitor the contaminant movement in conjunction with the current methods. Vertical resistivity electrode arrays were tested in a lab environment on singular probes and between probes. The arrays tested were the Wenner, dipole dipole, gradient, parallel and down-hole 3-arrays. Electrode pipes were constructed and placed into a sand tank where the hydrocarbon thickness and the water level could be …

Contribution Of White Dwarfs To Cluster Masses, Ted Von Hippel Apr 1998

Contribution Of White Dwarfs To Cluster Masses, Ted Von Hippel

Publications

I have undertaken a literature search through 1997 July 31 of white dwarfs (WDs) in open and globular clusters. I have tried to make a careful evaluation in each case of the likelihood that the object is a WD and that it is a cluster member. The results are presented for 13 open clusters and 11 globular clusters. Currently there are 36 single WDs and Ðve WDs in binaries known among the open clusters, and 340 single WDs and 11 WDs in binaries known among the globular clusters. From these data, I have calculated WD mass fractions for four open …

Publications

Results of a ground-based optical monitoring campaign on 3C 390.3 in 1994-1995 are presented. The broadband fluxes (B, V, R, and I), the spectrophotometric optical continuum flux and the Fλ(5177 Å),integrated emission-line fluxes of Hᵪ Hβ, Hᵧ, He I λ5876 and He II λ4686 all show a nearly monotonic increase with episodes of milder short-term variations superposed. The amplitude of the continuum variations increases with decreasing wavelength (4400-9000 Å). The optical continuum variations follow the variations in the ultraviolet and X-ray with time delays, measured from the centroids of the cross-correlation functions, typically around …

Factors Governing The Rate Of Appearance Of Fuels In Monitoring Wells, Bradley A. Green Apr 1998

Factors Governing The Rate Of Appearance Of Fuels In Monitoring Wells, Bradley A. Green

Masters Theses

Delays in the appearance of free product (e.g. fuels) in groundwater monitoring wells often cause costly delays in site evaluation. Little is known about how monitoring well design and installation affect this rate of appearance. This study examined the effects of well screen open area, filter pack grain size and wettability, and well development methods on the rate of appearance and subsequent thickness of free product in wells.

Laboratory and field results indicate that free product appears faster in hydrophilic filter packs than in hydrophobic filter packs. Hydrophobic filter packs with a finer grain size than the "industry standard", seem …

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Research

Time-of-flight mass spectroscopy was used to study the relaxation dynamics of HCl following photoexcitation in the vicinity of the Cl K edge (~2.8 keV) using monochromatic synchrotron radiation. At the lowest resonant excitation to the 6ơ* antibonding orbital, almost half of the excited molecules decay by emission of a neutral H atom, mostly in coincidence with a highly charged Cln1 ion. The present work demonstrates that neutral-atom emission can be a significant decay channel for excited states with very short lifetimes (1 fs). [S1050-2947(98)03604-X]

A Generic Multi-Electrode Automated/Semi-Automated Field Resistivity System, Douglas D. Werkema Apr 1998

A Generic Multi-Electrode Automated/Semi-Automated Field Resistivity System, Douglas D. Werkema

Masters Theses

Geophysical field exploration using electrical resistivity typically employs the use of four electrodes which are progressively relocated to positions that differ from a few meters to hundreds of meters. Consequently, field operations are tiresome and often lead to imprecise locations of electrodes and poor data quality. This project develops an automated field resistivity system.

This automation of resistivity measurements is accomplished by using multiple sets of field electrodes, a programmable switch box, remotely controlling the acquisition instrument and digitally storing the results. Controlling the process is the Acquisition Control©software, for Windows 95© .The prototype switch box has …

Sm-Nd Systematics As Indicators Of Displaced Plutons: A Test In The Idaho Batholith-Boulder Batholith Region, Christine J. Brand Apr 1998

Sm-Nd Systematics As Indicators Of Displaced Plutons: A Test In The Idaho Batholith-Boulder Batholith Region, Christine J. Brand

Masters Theses

In east-central Idaho and western Montana a 400km-long Cretaceous and Tertiary magmatic corridor extends from the Wallowa-Seven Devils terrane to the Helena Salient. Three basement provinces underlie this area: Archean basement to the east, Permo-Triassic basement to the west, and Proterozoic basement in-between. Ideally, if Cretaceous plutons were decapitated and translated eastward along thrusts over a different basement province, then the Cretaceous pluton and the in-place Tertiary pluton would show different isotopic signatures. Pluton samples from locations evenly spaced throughout the magmatic corridor were analyzed for ε0Nd, εtNd, and 147Sm/143Nd model ages …

Thermal Lattice Boltzmann Simulations Of Variable Prandtl Number Turbulent Flows, Min Soe, George Vahala, Pavol Pavlo, Linda L. Vahala, Hudong Chen

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Thermal lattice Boltzmann (TLBE) models that utilize the single relaxation time scalar Bhatnagar, Gross, and Krook collision operator have an invariant Prandtl number. For flows with arbitrary Prandtl number, a matrix collision operator is introduced. The relaxation parameters are generalized so that the transport coefficients become density independent. TLBE simulations are presented for two-dimensional free decaying turbulence induced by a strongly perturbed double velocity shear layer for various Prandtl numbers.

(A Note On)(2) The Shape Of The Erythrocyte, J. A. Adam Apr 1998

(A Note On)(2) The Shape Of The Erythrocyte, J. A. Adam

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

A note on the shape of the red blood cell is revisited, utilizing variational calculus to to find an extremum for the surface area of such a cell, using the volume as a constraint. A fairly significant error in the value of the volume is corrected, and the note concludes with a discussion of measures of cell shape (such as the sphericity index) which are more appropriate than the dimensional surface area to volume ratio.

Distance Dependence Of Electron Transfer Along Artificial Beta-Strands At 298 And 77 K, S. R. L. Fernando, Gennady V. Kozlov, Michael Y. Ogawa Apr 1998

Distance Dependence Of Electron Transfer Along Artificial Beta-Strands At 298 And 77 K, S. R. L. Fernando, Gennady V. Kozlov, Michael Y. Ogawa

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Photoinduced electron-transfer rate constants were measured for a series of binuclear metallopeptides consisting of a [Ru(bpy)(2)(cmbpy)](2+) electron donor tethered to a Co-III(NH3)(5) electron acceptor by an oligovaline peptide chain (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, cmbpy = 4-carboxy-4'-methyl-2,2'-bipyridine). These compounds were shown by H-1 NMR to adopt the conformational properties found within the individual strands of a beta-pleated sheet in both aqueous and methanol solutions. Emission lifetime measurements and HPLC product analysis show that the binuclear donor/acceptor compounds undergo photoinduced electron transfer (ET). The values of k(et) decrease with increasing donor/acceptor distance according to the expression k(et) = k' exp[-beta(r(-)r(0))]. A distance attenuation …

Inversion And Analysis Of Remotely Sensed Atmospheric Water Vapor Measurements At 940nm, Jack Cutler Larsen Apr 1998

Inversion And Analysis Of Remotely Sensed Atmospheric Water Vapor Measurements At 940nm, Jack Cutler Larsen

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The understanding and acceptance of remotely sensed atmospheric data depends strongly on the steps taken to characterize experiment error and validate observations through comparisons to other independent measurements. A formal error analysis of the Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment II (SAGE II) water vapor operational inversion algorithm is performed and compared to previous results. Random measurement errors were characterized by segmented least-squares profile fitting of the slant path absorption which found the error to be uncorrelated in the stratosphere with estimated variances significantly smaller than expected from 18-30 km. Estimates of null space error were developed from radiosonde hygrometers in …
