Florida Coral Reef Damage From Nuclear Submarine Grounding And Proposed Restoration, Kenneth Banks, Richard E. Dodge (Editor), Lou Fisher, David K. Stout, Walter Jaap

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

The United States submarine Memphis grounded in approximately 10 m water depth on a tropical coral reef ofT southeast Florida in February, 1993. The grounding caused extensive physical and biological damage to the reef substrate and to the coral community. As part of a claim by the State of Florida against the United States, the impact of the grounding was assessed, and the area of damage was determined through field and photographic studies. A recovery rate for the reef was assigned from literature estimates. The NOAA Habitat Equivalency Model (HEM) was used to calculate the reef area needed to be …

Nonlocal Theory Of Dissociative Electron Attachment To H2 And Hf Molecules, Gordon A. Gallup, Y. [Yuanguang] Xu, Ilya I. Fabrikant Apr 1998

Nonlocal Theory Of Dissociative Electron Attachment To H2 And Hf Molecules, Gordon A. Gallup, Y. [Yuanguang] Xu, Ilya I. Fabrikant

Gordon Gallup Publications

We develop a method for calculation of dissociative electron attachment cross sections based on the Fano- Feshbach projection-operator approach. The coupling between the diabatic state and electron continuum is calculated with the inclusion of orthogonality scattering and long-range electron-molecule interaction. The dynamics of nuclear motion in the non-local complex potential is treated by semiclassical theory. We apply the theory to the calculation of dissociative attachment to the H2 and HF molecules. Our results for attachment to ground-state hydrogen molecules and the near-threshold vibrational enhancement of H2 are essentially the same as previous non-local results. However, the shape of …

Solvable Model Of Two-Dimensional Dilaton Gravity Coupled To A Massless Scalar Field, Marco Cavaglia Apr 1998

Solvable Model Of Two-Dimensional Dilaton Gravity Coupled To A Massless Scalar Field, Marco Cavaglia

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present a solvable model of two-dimensional dilaton-gravity coupled to a massless scalar field. We locally integrate the field equations and briefly discuss the properties of the solutions. For a particular choice of the coupling between the dilaton and the scalar field the model can be interpreted as the two-dimensional effective theory of 2+1 cylindrical gravity minimally coupled to a massless scalar field.

Results of a ground-based optical monitoring campaign on 3C 390.3 in 1994-1995 are presented. The broadband fluxes (B, V , R, and I), the spectrophotometric optical continuum flux Fλ(5177 Å), integrated emission-line fluxes of Hα, Hβ, Hγ, He I λ5876, and He II λ4686 all show a nearly monotonic increase with episodes of milder short-term variations superposed. The amplitude of the continuum variations increases with decreasing wavelength (4400-9000 Å). The optical continuum variations follow the variations in the ultraviolet and X-ray with time delays, measured from the centroids of the crosscorrelation functions, typically around …

A Near-Surface Microstructure Sensor System Used During Toga Coare. Part I: Bow Measurements., Alexander Soloviev, Roger Lukas, Sharon Decarlo, Jefrey Snyder, A. Arjannikov, Vyacheslav Turenko, M. Baker, Dmitry Khlebnikov Apr 1998

A Near-Surface Microstructure Sensor System Used During Toga Coare. Part I: Bow Measurements., Alexander Soloviev, Roger Lukas, Sharon Decarlo, Jefrey Snyder, A. Arjannikov, Vyacheslav Turenko, M. Baker, Dmitry Khlebnikov

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

High-resolution probes mounted on the bow of the vessel at a 1.7-m depth in an undisturbed region ahead of the moving vessel were used for microstructure and turbulence measurements in the near-surface layer of the ocean during TOGA COARE. The probes measured temperature, conductivity, pressure, three-component fluctuation velocity, and two components of acceleration. Accumulation of large amounts of high-quality nearsurface data poses a difficult challenge, and deployment from the bow of a ship, such as is done with these sensors, requires rugged, well-calibrated, and low-noise sensors. The heaving motion of the ship that causes the sensors to break through the …

Scaling Studies Of Spheromak Formation And Equilibrium, Cameron G. R. Geddes , '97, Thomas W. Kornack , '98, Michael R. Brown

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

Formation and equilibrium studies have been performed on the Swarthmore Spheromak Experiment (SSX). Spheromaks are formed with a magnetized coaxial plasma gun and equilibrium is established in both small (d(small)=0.16 m) and large (d(large)=3d(small)=0.50 m) copper flux conservers. Using magnetic probe arrays it has been verified that spheromak formation is governed solely by gun physics (in particular the ratio of gun current to flux, mu(0)I(gun)/Phi(gun)) and is independent of the flux conserver dimensions. It has also been verified that equilibrium is well described by the force free condition del xB=lambda B (lambda=constant), particularly early in decay. Departures from the force-free …

Fuzzy Requirements, Xiaoqing Frank Liu Apr 1998

Fuzzy Requirements, Xiaoqing Frank Liu

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Requirement analysis and specification is the first major step in software development. The goal is to develop a requirements specification that contains all the customers' true needs. The analysis describes quality requirements and their constraints, such as cost and resources. Functional requirements are analyzed in terms of inputs, outputs and their relationships. Hence, requirements analysis enables software engineers to specify software function and establish software design and implementation constraints. The paper discusses the specification of individual fuzzy requirements using fuzzy sets.

Logical Information Modeling Of Web-Accessible Heterogeneous Digital Assets, Kshitij Shah, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

This paper introduces the MREF framework for representing and correlating information at a higher semantic level than is possible with Web-based information systems today. The role that metadata plays in this framework is described, together with a metadata based infrastructure to support our media independent information correlation paradigm. To keep it consistent with evolving standards, broader acceptance and ease of implementation, MREF abstraction is structured on top of RDF and XML. Its central role in the context of the InfoQuilt system, for exploiting heterogeneous digital media using a federated and scalable architecture, is briefly described.

Investigating The Formation Of Extra-Galactic Radio Jets, Casey R. Watson Apr 1998

Investigating The Formation Of Extra-Galactic Radio Jets, Casey R. Watson

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Jets of collimated particles are among the most intriguing characteristics of active galactic nuclei. In this paper two models of particle interactions in active galactic nuclei are used to explore a possible initial acceleration mechanism of the jets: charge separation. Model I ignores the effects of both collisions and electromagnetic forces and does not predict charge separation. Model II incorporates collisions and electromagnetic interactions, and, although it too predicts no charge separation, it provides a more physically sound model of active nucleus than does Model I.

Electrophoretic Deposition Of Polymer Chains On An Adsorbing Surface In (2+1) Dimensions: Conformational Anisotropy And Nonuniversal Coverage, Grace M. Foo, Ras B. Pandey Apr 1998

Electrophoretic Deposition Of Polymer Chains On An Adsorbing Surface In (2+1) Dimensions: Conformational Anisotropy And Nonuniversal Coverage, Grace M. Foo, Ras B. Pandey

Faculty Publications

Electrophoretic deposition of polymer chains flowing in a (2 + 1)-dimensional system is studied by computer simulations. Steady-state surface coverage θj is found to decay with the chain's length, i.e., θj∼Lc-a with a nonuniversal exponent α≃0.0-0.9 depending on the magnitude of driving field and temperature. Conformational crossover occurs for chains from a surface or wall to an adjacent bulk region with different scaling exponents for their longitudinal and transverse spread.

Trophic Diversity Of A Mesopelagic Fish Community., Tracey Sutton, Thomas L. Hopkins, Thomas M. Lancraft

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

To understand the character of prey partitioning in a low latitude oligotrophic region, a composite picture of the trophic structure of a mesopelagic fish community was made from the eastern Gulf of Mexico. Two hundred and twenty three species were collected in the area of which I61 species were abundant enough for analyses. Fifteen major categories of prey biomass are identified for diet analyses: viz. copepods, ostracods, amphipods, euphausiids, decapods, larvaceans, salps, coelenterates (primarily siphonophores), unidentified gelatinous prey, polychaetes, gastropods, cephalopods, chaetognaths, fish, other food. Prey partitioning is minimal across major prey categories as the vast majority of mesopelagic fishes …

On October 9, 1993, observations were made from the National Center for Atmospheric Research Electra aircraft during a flight from Maui, Hawaii, toward a low-pressure system NW of the island, a flight of 7 hours in total. The leading edge (wall) of a bright airglow layer was observed 900 km NW of Maui at 0815 UT, which was traveling at 75 m s−1 toward the SE, reaching Haleakala, Maui, about 3.25 hours later [see Swenson and Espy, 1995]. An intriguing feature associated with the event was the large increase in the mesospheric Na column density at the wall (∼180%). The …

Application Of Tomographic Inversion In Studying Airglow In The Mesopause Region, T. Nygren, Michael J. Taylor, M. S. Lehtinen, M. Markkanen

All Physics Faculty Publications

It is pointed out that observations of periodic nightglow structures give excellent information on atmospheric gravity waves in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere. The periods, the horizontal wavelengths and the phase speeds of the waves can be determined from airglow images and, using several cameras, the approximate altitude of the luminous layer can also be determined by triangulation. In this paper the possibility of applying tomographic methods for reconstructing the airglow structures is investigated using numerical simulations. A ground-based chain of cameras is assumed, two-dimensional airglow models in the vertical plane above the chain are constructed, and simulated data are …

Zinc phosphide (ZN3P2) is an acute rodenticide. One of its current uses employs application as a grain bait or pellet at the time of planting to reduce agricultural losses by field rodents. To mitigate rodent induced losses to corn, we hoped to expand the approved uses of zinc phosphide to include corn applications. After determining acceptable efficacy, we conducted a study to determine if potentially hazardous zinc phosphide residues in corn would result from this use. A field study was conducted in 5 corn growing states to provide samples for residue analysis of corn treated with …

Groundwater Hydraulics And Slope Stability Analysis: Elements For Prediction Of Shoreline Recession, William W. Montgomery Apr 1998

Groundwater Hydraulics And Slope Stability Analysis: Elements For Prediction Of Shoreline Recession, William W. Montgomery

Dissertations

Studies documenting the roles that geologic materials and groundwater play in Great Lakes bluff recession are rare. This study reports findings concerning relationships between bluff lithology, bluff hydrology, and bluff recession along a 10-mile stretch of eastern Lake Michigan shoreline in heterogeneous Pleistocene deposes. According to a newly-developed, field-tested, GIS-based methodology, bluffs in the study area can be characterized lithologically as sand, clay, or mixed sand/clay, and can be characterized hydrologically as exhibiting either high head or low head.

Geotechnical analysis indicates that Atterberg limits, index properties, consolidation state, and drainage conditions affect the shear strength of bluff materials. Silty …
