Contribution Of The Center-Of-Mass Fluctuation Of A Liquid Cluster To The Free Energy: A Monte Carlo Simulation Study, K.J. Oh, Xiao Cheng Zeng Mar 1998

Contribution Of The Center-Of-Mass Fluctuation Of A Liquid Cluster To The Free Energy: A Monte Carlo Simulation Study, K.J. Oh, Xiao Cheng Zeng

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

The contribution of the center-of-mass (CM) fluctuation of a liquid cluster to the Helmholtz free energy was first discussed by Reiss, Katz, and Cohen (RKC). They argued that this contribution can be assessed via the free energy difference between the cluster with a fixed boundary centered on a fixed CM, and the cluster in which the CM was allowed to fluctuate. They estimated the free energy difference is to be about 20 kbT. Here kb is the Boltzmann constant and T is the temperature of the system. To examine this estimate, Abraham et al. later calculated …

Characterization And Evaluation Of D-(+)-Tubocurarine Chloride As A Chiral Selector For Capillary Electrophoretic Enantioseparations, Usha B. Nair, Daniel W. Armstrong, Willie L. Hinze Mar 1998

Characterization And Evaluation Of D-(+)-Tubocurarine Chloride As A Chiral Selector For Capillary Electrophoretic Enantioseparations, Usha B. Nair, Daniel W. Armstrong, Willie L. Hinze

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new macrocyclic of the bis(benzylisoquinoline) alkaloid family, d- (+)-tubocurarine chloride (DTC), has been evaluated as a chiral selector for the separation of optical isomers of organic carboxylates using capillary electrophoresis (CE). The pertinent physicochemical properties, such as absorption spectrum, isoionic point, and solution conformation, of DTC were determined. The effects of varying such experimental parameters as DTC concentration, pH, and methanol content in the running buffer were assessed. CE separation of the enantiomers of 18 different compounds was achieved using DTC as the chiral selector under optimized background electrolytic conditions.

Semilocal String Formation In Two Dimensions, Ana Achúcarro, Julian Borrill, Andrew R. Liddle Mar 1998

Semilocal String Formation In Two Dimensions, Ana Achúcarro, Julian Borrill, Andrew R. Liddle

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present a toy model for the investigation of the formation of semilocal strings, where a planar symmetry is employed to reduce the system to two dimensions. We approximate the symmetry breaking using an extension of the Vachaspati-Vilenkin algorithm, where we throw down random phases for the scalar fields and then find the gauge field configuration which minimizes gradient energy in this fixed scalar background. We show this procedure reproduces the standard estimate for the formation rate of cosmic strings. For semilocal strings the configurations generated by this method are ambiguous, and we numerically evolve the configurations forward in time …

How To Count Kinks. From The Continuum To The Lattice And Back, Marcelo Gleiser, Hans-Reinhard Muller Mar 1998

How To Count Kinks. From The Continuum To The Lattice And Back, Marcelo Gleiser, Hans-Reinhard Muller

Dartmouth Scholarship

We investigate the matching between (1+1)-dimensional nonlinear field theories coupled to an external stochastic environment and their lattice simulations. In particular, we focus on how to obtain numerical results which are lattice-spacing independent, and on how to extract the correct effective potential which emerges from the simulations. As an application, we study the thermal production of kink-antikink pairs, obtaining a number density of pairs which is lattice-spacing independent and the

In order to assess the N+/O+ ratio, we also measured the flux of the [O II] (2p32Po1/2,3/2-->2p34So3/2) lines at λvac …

The Ultraviolet-Optical Albedo Of Broad Emission Line Clouds, Kirk Korista, Gary J. Ferland Mar 1998

The Ultraviolet-Optical Albedo Of Broad Emission Line Clouds, Kirk Korista, Gary J. Ferland

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We explore the effective UV-optical albedos of a variety of types of broad emission line clouds, as well as their possible effects on the observed spectra of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). An important albedo source in moderately ionized ionization-bounded clouds is that which is due to neutral hydrogen: Rayleigh scattering of continuum photons off the extreme damping wings of Lyα. The photons resulting from this scattering mechanism may contribute significantly to the Lyα emission line, especially in the very broad wings. In addition, line photons emitted near 1200 Å (e.g., N V λ1240) that stream toward the neutral portion of …

Sand Body Geometry Of The Wax Lake Outlet Delta Atchafalaya Bay, Louisiana, Susan Majersky Fitzgerald Mar 1998

Sand Body Geometry Of The Wax Lake Outlet Delta Atchafalaya Bay, Louisiana, Susan Majersky Fitzgerald

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Deltas forming in Atchafalaya Bay, L-ouisiana, are the result of delta switching by the Mississippi River. The larger Lower Atchafalaya River delta has been heavily manipulated by dredging for navigation, but the Wax Lake Outlet delta is largely undisturbed and an excellent example of a 'bayhead' delta. Combining stratigraphy, aerial photography and digital terrain model data sets, the developmental history of this delta is presented. The Wax Lake Outlet delta is comprised of a typical upward-coarsening sequence, although its prodelta unit is extremely limited. Its plan-view form is typical of deltas developing in low-energy, unstratified, shallow basins. Early developmental processes …

The Voltammetry Of C84 Isomers, Mark Anderson, Harry Dorn, Steven Stevenson, Susanne Dana Mar 1998

The Voltammetry Of C84 Isomers, Mark Anderson, Harry Dorn, Steven Stevenson, Susanne Dana

Mark R. Anderson

The square-wave voltammetry of isolated isomers of C84 is reported. Based on their relative abundance, the isomers are assumed to have D2 and D2d symmetry. The D2 isomer has four reversible reductions at −0.65, −0.98, −1.34, and −1.75 V versus Fc/Fc+ prior to electrolyte decomposition. This behavior is consistent with previous reports, and is similar to the voltammetry of C60 and C70 (e.g. sequential reductions spaced at slightly increasing intervals). The D2d isomer has five reversible reductions at −0.46, −0.77, −1.58, −1.98, and −2.27 V versus Fc/Fc+ prior to the onset of electrolyte decomposition. The large potential difference separating the …

Computer Intensive Physics, Robert Fuller Mar 1998

Computer Intensive Physics, Robert Fuller

Robert G. Fuller Publications

In the abstract packet for the conference is an article of references about ideas from cognitive studies that help us teach physics (Fuller, 1998). There is also a pamphlet of references to innovative physics teaching programs in the United States and many of those programs have world-wide web sites so you can access information about those programs from Portugal (O'Kuma, 1998).

I want to talk about my research project last year, which I now call "Computer Intensive Physics", but it really started out as paper-less physics.

A global event shape analysis of the multihadronic final states observed in neutral current deep inelastic scattering events with a large rapidity gap with respect to the proton direction is presented. The analysis is performed in the range 5 ≤ Q2 ≤ 185 GeV2 and 160 ≤ W ≤ 250 GeV, where Q2 is the virtuality of the photon and W is the virtual-photon proton centre of mass energy. Particular emphasis is placed on the dependence of the shape variables, measured in the γ * -pomeron rest frame, on the mass of the hadronic final state, MX. With increasing MX …

The Stable Manifold Theorem For Sde's (Probability Seminar, University Of California, Irvine), Salah-Eldin A. Mohammed Mar 1998

The Stable Manifold Theorem For Sde's (Probability Seminar, University Of California, Irvine), Salah-Eldin A. Mohammed

Miscellaneous (presentations, translations, interviews, etc)

In this talk, we formulate a local stable manifold theorem for stochastic differential equations in Euclidean space, driven by multi-dimensional Brownian motion. We introduce the concept of hyperbolicity for stationary trajectories of a SDE. This is done using the Oseledec muliplicative ergodic theorem on the linearized SDE along the stationary solution. Using methods of (non-linear ergodic theory), we construct a stationary family of stable and unstable manifolds in a stationary neighborhood around the hyperbolic stationary trajectory of the non-linear SDE. The stable/unstable manifolds are dynamically characterized using anticipative stochastic calculus.

Computer Simplification Of Formulas In Linear Systems Theory, J. W. Helton, Mark Stankus, John J. Wavrik Mar 1998

Computer Simplification Of Formulas In Linear Systems Theory, J. W. Helton, Mark Stankus, John J. Wavrik

Mathematics

Currently, the three most popular commercial computer algebra systems are Mathematica, Maple, and MACSYMA. These systems provide a wide variety of symbolic computation facilities for commutative algebra and contain implementations of powerful algorithms in that domain. The Gröbner Basis Algorithm, for example, is an important tool used in computation with commutative algebras and in solving systems of polynomial equations.

On the other hand, most of the computation involved in linear control theory is performed on matrices, and these do not commute. A typical issue of IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON AUTOMATIC CONTROL is full of linear systems and computations with their coefficient …

An Analytical Study Of Ozone Feedbacks On Kelvin And Rossby–Gravity Waves: Effects On The Qbo, Eugene Cordero, Terrence R. Nathan, Robert S. Echols

Faculty Publications, Meteorology and Climate Science

An equatorial beta-plane model of the middle atmosphere is used to analytically examine the effects of radiative cooling and ozone heating on the spatial and temporal evolution of the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO). Under the assumption that the diabatic heating is weak and the background fields of wind, temperature, and ozone are slowly varying, a perturbation analysis yields expressions describing the vertical spatial modulation of Kelvin and Rossby–gravity waves in the presence of ozone. These expressions show that wave-induced changes in the diabatic heating arising from the advection of basic-state ozone reduce the local radiative damping rate by up to 15% …

The Texture Of Clouds, A. R. Jameson, Alexander Kostinski, R A. Black Mar 1998

The Texture Of Clouds, A. R. Jameson, Alexander Kostinski, R A. Black

Department of Physics Publications

Using a precise definition of clustering, it is shown that in two tropical cumulus clouds, droplets appear to be bunched over distances ranging from at least a kilometer or more down to several centimeters. A statistical framework is proposed for quantifying clustering in terms of a Poisson probability mixture. While these observations require further substantiation in many different clouds, droplet clustering may play a role in diverse phenomena from the coalescence growth of raindrops to the scattering of radiation by clouds.

We analyzed the relationship between new ecosystem exchange of carbon dioxide (NEE) and irradiance (as photosynthetic photon flux density of PPFD), using published and unpublished data that have been collected during midgrowing season for carbon balance studies at seven peatlands in North America and Europe. NEE measurements included both eddy-correlation tower and clear, static chamber methods, which gave very similar results. Data were analyzed by site, as aggregated data set for all peatland type (bog, poor fen, rich fen, and all fens) and as a single aggregated data set for all peatlands. In all cases, a fit with a rectangular …

As ultrafast lasers achieve ever higher focused intensities on target, the problem of ensuring a clean laser-solid interaction becomes more pressing. In this paper, we give concrete examples of the deleterious effects of low-contrast interactions, and address the problem of subpicosecond laser intensity contrast ratio on both characterization and control fronts. We present the new technique of high-dynamic-range plasma-shuttered streak camera contrast measurement, as well as two efficient and relatively inexpensive ways of improving the contrast of short pulse lasers without sacrificing on the output energy: a double-pass Pockels cell (PC), and clean high-energy-pulse seeding of the regenerative amplifier.

Two-particle azimuthal correlations have been used to extract reaction plane dispersion free triple-differential cross sections for d, t, and α particles for the midcentral collisions of 84Kr+197Au at E/A=35, 55, and 70 MeV. Both experimental measurements and extrapolations from lower incident energies suggest that rotational flow disappears at E/A≈100 MeV for light charged particles and that reaction plane dispersions introduce large uncertainties in extracting the disappearance of rotational flow.
