A Study Of The Linbo_3 And Litao_3 Absorption Edge, S. Çabuk, A. Mamedov Jan 1998

A Study Of The Linbo_3 And Litao_3 Absorption Edge, S. Çabuk, A. Mamedov

Turkish Journal of Physics

Optical spectroscopy methods are used to study the spectra of some oxygen-octahedral ferroelectrics - $LiNbO_3$ and $LiTaO_3$. Study of the role of $BO_6$ octahedron by using spectroscopic methods can cast light on the many physical phenomena that place in $LiNbO_3$ and $LiTaO_3$. For these crystals, absorption edge, band gap, Urbach constants and phonon energy were found.

Anisotropic Motion Of Lipids In Hydrophobic Core Of Dppc Bilayers. Simulation Of Esr Spectra, Canan Teti̇k, Mustafa Korkmaz Jan 1998

Anisotropic Motion Of Lipids In Hydrophobic Core Of Dppc Bilayers. Simulation Of Esr Spectra, Canan Teti̇k, Mustafa Korkmaz

Turkish Journal of Physics

Planar samples prepared by drying phospholipid dispersions on glass slides provide a convenient model to examine motion and orientation in lipid bilayer structures. In the present work, hydrophobic cores of DPPC multibilayers were studied using a 16-DSA spin label consisting of a nitroxide free radical bonded to the 16 position of stearic acid. This spin label is in great demand for investigation of phase transitions occurring in the hydrophobic cores of lipid multibilayers. Thus, its room temperature motional and orientational features in phospholipid bilayers must be known accurately to avoid any misinterpretation in using it in these types of studies. …

Formation Of Hot Zone By The Application Of An Electric Field To Superconducting Bi_{1.6}Pb_{0.4}Sr_2ca_3cu_4o_X (2234) Rod, E. Yanmaz Jan 1998

Formation Of Hot Zone By The Application Of An Electric Field To Superconducting Bi_{1.6}Pb_{0.4}Sr_2ca_3cu_4o_X (2234) Rod, E. Yanmaz

Turkish Journal of Physics

The formation of hot zone by electric field on superconducting Bi-Pb-Sr-Ca-Cu-O (BSCCO) rods is described. Bulk samples with a nominal composition of Bi_{1.6}Pb_{0.4}Sr_2Ca_3Cu_4O_x (2234) were prepared as rods by a melt casting process. An electrical field was applied to the BSCCO rods and this current caused the resistance of the rod to fall and after a few minutes the initial voltage fell while the current was increased to 2.5A. Under certain conditions, a well-defined hot zone formed at the positive electrode, travelled along the rod and eventually disappeared on reaching the negative electrode. A small increase in the applied current …

Anomalous Electrical Characteristics Of Ion Implanted P^+-N Juntions, N. Siddiqui Jan 1998

Anomalous Electrical Characteristics Of Ion Implanted P^+-N Juntions, N. Siddiqui

Turkish Journal of Physics

Electrical characteristics of three $P^+ - n$ diodes fabricated on high resistivity silicon by ion implantation technique are studied by making capacitance-voltage (C-V), reverse current-voltage (I-V) and dielectric spectroscopy of semiconductor (DSS) measurements. The C-V characteristics show abrupt fall in capacitance, while I-V characteristics show abrupt rise in current at the same voltages as in the C-V characteristics. These abrupt discontinuities are ascribed to the formation of defect clusters in the lightly doped base regions where charge transfer might be taking place by thermally assisted tunneling. Low activation energies obtained in the DSS measurements also point toward the same mechanism.

The Effect Of Halogen Impurities On Electrocunductivity Of Chalcogenide Glass Semicunductor Se-As System, A.I. Isaogli, S.M. Ibrahimgizi, A.R. Kamilogli Jan 1998

The Effect Of Halogen Impurities On Electrocunductivity Of Chalcogenide Glass Semicunductor Se-As System, A.I. Isaogli, S.M. Ibrahimgizi, A.R. Kamilogli

Turkish Journal of Physics

DC conductivity has been measured as function of dopant concentration for Se-As glass containing 2-10 \% As, doped with Cl or Br. It was established that concentration dependences of the conductivity have maxima for concentration of Cl or Br between $10^{-3}$ and $10^{-2}$ at \%. The effect of halogen impurities on electroconductivity of Se-As glasses has been attributed to the change of relative concentrations of the charged defect centers $(C^-_1, C^+_3)$ and to the occurrence of new $Cl^-, Br^-$ centers associated with chlorine (bromine) atoms and the compensation of the effect of arsenic on the energy spectrum of electron states.

The Total Synthesis Of A Conformationally Constrained Organophosphorus Analog Of Acetycholine, Justin Mergott '98 Jan 1998

The Total Synthesis Of A Conformationally Constrained Organophosphorus Analog Of Acetycholine, Justin Mergott '98

Honors Projects

We propose the total synthesis of a conformationally constrained organophosphorus analog of acetylcholine (5, Scheme 5). This compound will contain two crural centers, one being the phosphorus atom and the other being the pyrrolidine ring carbon beta to the phosphorus atom. The chiral beta carbon is conformationally constrained because it is part of the pyrrolidine ring. Studies with such a compound should allow us to make substantial progress towards the clarification of the stereospecificity of AChE inhibition by OP compounds and eventually help us understand more about the structure of the AChE active site. The synthesis begins with Cbz-L-proline methyl …

Time-Resolved Studies Of Ultracold Ionizing Collisions, Scott D. Bergeson, C. Orzel, S. Kulin, S. L. Rolston Jan 1998

Time-Resolved Studies Of Ultracold Ionizing Collisions, Scott D. Bergeson, C. Orzel, S. Kulin, S. L. Rolston

Faculty Publications

Using 40 ns laser pulses, we probe the real-time dynamics of ultracold ionizing collisions in metastable xenon. We time resolve both shielding and enhancement effects, and observe the production of Xe2^+ molecular ions through associative ionization. We estimate the rate of molecule formation in excited-state collisions, and directly measure the role of both flux enhancement and excited state survival in the collisional enhancement process. Conceptually simple theoretical models are used to predict the dynamics of the collisional shielding.

A Mathematical Model For Fibroblast And Collagen Orientation, J. C. Dallon, J. A. Sherratt Jan 1998

A Mathematical Model For Fibroblast And Collagen Orientation, J. C. Dallon, J. A. Sherratt

Faculty Publications

Due to the increasing importance of the extracellular matrix in many biological problems, in this paper we develop a model for fibroblast and collagen orientation with the ultimate objective of understanding how fibroblasts form and remodel the extracellular matrix, in particular its collagen component. The model uses integro-differential equations to describe the interaction between the cells and fibers at a point in space with various orientations. The equations are studied both analytically and numerically to discover different types of solutions and their behavior. In particular we examine solutions where all the fibroblasts and collagen have discrete orientations, a localized continuum …

Energy Requirements For Certified Organic Farms In New Jersey : A Survey And Analysis Of Tomato Production, Cecilia Kelnhofer-Feeley

Theses

The focus of this thesis is to document the fossil fuel and electrical energy consumption required to grow certified organic tomatoes in the State of New Jersey. First, in order to evaluate the energy requirement for agriculture, a literature review of energy changes during the twentieth century is discussed. Secondly, an in-depth look at energy requirements for all farming types is evaluated. Third, previous studies of the energy requirements in agriculture are examined; this includes both analyzing organic and conventional farming practices. A survey was generated from the information gathered. The survey was conducted via face-to-face interviews. When all the …

Correlation Function Formulation For The State Selected Total Reaction Probability, Sophya V. Garashchuk, D. J. Tannor Jan 1998

Correlation Function Formulation For The State Selected Total Reaction Probability, Sophya V. Garashchuk, D. J. Tannor

Faculty Publications

A correlation function formulation for the state-selected total reaction probability, Nα(E), is suggested. A wave packet, correlating with a specific set of internal reactant quantum numbers, α, is propagated forward in time until bifurcation is complete at which time the nonreactive portion of the amplitude is discarded. The autocorrelation function of the remaining amplitude is then computed and Fourier transformed to obtain a reactivity spectrum. Dividing by the corresponding spectrum of the original, unfiltered, wave packet normalizes the reactivity spectrum, yielding the total reaction probability from the internal state, α. The procedure requires negligible storage and just one time-energy Fourier …

Factorization For High-Energy Scattering, Ian Balitsky Jan 1998

Factorization For High-Energy Scattering, Ian Balitsky

Physics Faculty Publications

I demonstrate that the amplitude for the high-energy scattering can be factorized into a product of two independent functional integrals over “fast” and “slow” fields which interact by means of Wilson-line operators—gauge factors ordered along the straight lines.

Application Of The Correspondence-Type Geostatistical Analysis On Theco, Ni, As, Ag And Au Concentrations Of The Listwaenites Fromserpentinites In The Divrigi And Kuluncak Ophiolitic Mélanges, Ali̇ Uçurum Jan 1998

Application Of The Correspondence-Type Geostatistical Analysis On Theco, Ni, As, Ag And Au Concentrations Of The Listwaenites Fromserpentinites In The Divrigi And Kuluncak Ophiolitic Mélanges, Ali̇ Uçurum

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The main aim of this research was to find out correlation-if there is any-among Co, Ni, As, Ag and Au concentrations in three different listwaenite sampling sets in Divirigi and Hekimhan areas. The low temperature hydrothermal alteration of serpentinite bodies from the Divrigi and Kuluncak ophiolitic mélanges in the Cürek, Divrigi-Sivas, Güvenç and Karakuz areas, Hekimhan-Malatya, has formed two distinct types of listwaenite. Type I, is silica-carbonate listwaenite, which is dominated by silica+calcite+dolomite+ankerite±magnesite. Type II listwaenite bodies are carbonate listwaenite characterized by calcite+dolomite+ankerite ±magnesite, and lack any significant introduced silica. Correspondence-type geostatistical analysis has been thought to be the best …

Geochronology And Geochemistry Of Basaltic Rocks In The Karasu Graben Around Kırıkhan (Hatay), S. Turkey, Osman Parlak, Ali̇can Kop, Ulvi̇ Can Ünlügenç, Cavi̇t Demi̇rkol Jan 1998

Geochronology And Geochemistry Of Basaltic Rocks In The Karasu Graben Around Kırıkhan (Hatay), S. Turkey, Osman Parlak, Ali̇can Kop, Ulvi̇ Can Ünlügenç, Cavi̇t Demi̇rkol

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The study area, which is located in the middle sector of the Amanos mountains, covers the north of Kırıkhan (Hatay) in southern Turkey. Tectonostratigraphic rock units from Paleozoic to Cenozoic are exposed within this terrain, which is tectonically active as a result of continent-continent collision between Afro-Arabia and Eurasia. Young basaltic volcanism, located at the N-end of the Dead Sea transform fault in southern Turkey, crops out along the NE-SW trending structural lineaments within the Karasu valley (Hatay). K.Ar age determinations performed on the volcanic rocks give an age range from 0.4 Ma to 2.2 Ma that indicate Plio-Quaternary time …

Miocene Synvolcanic Alluvial Sedimentation In Lignite-Bearing Soma Basin, Western Turkey, Uğur İnci̇

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Calcalkaline volcanism and volcaniclastic deposition controlled considerable mode of late Miocene sedimentation and basinal development of the lignite-bearing Soma basin in western Turkey. The volcanism-induced Denis Formation, overlying the Soma Formation discordantly, is represented by two rock assemblages: 1) In the depositional axis of the basin, green, fine-grained sandstone dominated alluvial-lacustrine deposits and, 2) In the northern margin of te basin, syn-eruptive volcaniclastic apron deposits which are mainly composed of fine and coarse-grained volcaniclastic/pyroclastic rocks and lavas. The primary volcanic rocks surrounding probably low-relief volcanoes representing near-vent assemblage are composed mainly of andesitic, rhyolitic and basaltic lavas and pyroclastics. These …

Effects Of Submergence On Embryonic Survival And Developmental Rate Of The Florida Applesnail, Pomacea Paludosa: Implications For Egg Predation And Marsh Management, Richard L. Turner Jan 1998

Effects Of Submergence On Embryonic Survival And Developmental Rate Of The Florida Applesnail, Pomacea Paludosa: Implications For Egg Predation And Marsh Management, Richard L. Turner

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Aerial deposition of egg clutches by the aquatic Florida applesnail is believed to have evolved in response to aquatic egg predators. Adaptation to aerial conditions might, however, have rendered embryos intolerant of submergence, a potential occurrence in natural and managed marshes, rivers, and lakes. In this study, eggs were submerged in water for various durations in the laboratory to assess their ability to survive flooding; and clutches of known ages were submerged for several days in the field to determine if aquatic predators might decrease survival below levels expected to occur due to flooding alone. Submergence of clutches slowed embryonic …

Passive Margin Sedimentation On Costa Rica's North Caribbean Coastal Plain, Rio Colorado, Randall W. Parkinson, Jorge Cortés, Percy Denyer Jan 1998

Passive Margin Sedimentation On Costa Rica's North Caribbean Coastal Plain, Rio Colorado, Randall W. Parkinson, Jorge Cortés, Percy Denyer

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Geomorphic, sedimentologic, and stratigraphic data obtained from the north Caribbean region of Costa Rica suggests Rio Colorado is a wave-dominated delta which has formed along a passive continental margin. This coastal setting is significantly different from the south Caribbean and Pacific coastlines, which display geomorphic and lithologic features indicative of seismically active continental margins. The distinct aseismic history and passive margin geomorphology of the north Caribbean coastal plain appears to be controlled by the presence of tectonic features (i.e., East Nicoya Fracture Zone) which decouple the region from adjacent, tectonically active areas. Although the data collected during this pilot study, …

A Tour Of Mistakes, Paul H. Edelman Jan 1998

A Tour Of Mistakes, Paul H. Edelman

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

In these pages, Steven Lubet recently reviewed A Tour of the Calculus, by David Berlinski. Inspired by both the beauty of calculus and Berlinski's description of it, Lubet waxes poetic on the many parallels between the law and calculus. It is completely understandable--even admirable that one might be led to ruminations on the relationship between calculus and one's own discipline. There is little doubt that the subject of calculus stands as one of the great intellectual feats of Western thought. It has had profound implications for physics, engineering, economics and many other disciplines-so why not law? Alas, these philosophical musings …

Transitive And Fully Transitive Groups, Steve Files, Brendan Goldsmith Jan 1998

Transitive And Fully Transitive Groups, Steve Files, Brendan Goldsmith

Articles

The notions of transitivity and full transitivity for abelian p-groups were introduced by Kaplansky in the 1950s. Important classes of transitive and fully transitive p-groups were discovered by Hill, among others. Since a 1976 paper by Corner, it has been known that the two properties are independent of one another. We examine how the formation of direct sums of p-groups affects transitivity and full transitivity. In so doing, we uncover a far-reaching class of p-groups for which transitivity and full transitivity are equivalent. This result sheds light on the relationship between the two properties for all p-groups.

Reactions Of Modified Silica Gel Surfaces With Organometallic Compounds: Enhancing Olefin Polymerization Catalysts, Richard E. Diebel Iii Jan 1998

Reactions Of Modified Silica Gel Surfaces With Organometallic Compounds: Enhancing Olefin Polymerization Catalysts, Richard E. Diebel Iii

Masters Theses

Pretreated silica gels with distinct silica surfaces containing either isolated silanols, vicinal silanols, siloxanes, or some combinations of the three, were reacted with several organometallic compounds to determine how each compound reacted with the different silica surface species. The organometallic compounds used were trimethylaluminum, triethylaluminum, diethylaluminum chloride, ethylaluminum dichloride, methylaluminoxane, dibutylmagnesium, and bis-cyclopentadienyl dimethyl zirconium.

These reacted silica gels were analyzed using diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy and ICP-AES elemental analysis. CH/Metal ratios were calculated using specific peaks in the IR spectra to elucidate the surface bonded species. Elemental analysis was used to determine how much metal was bonded …

Operations And Spectral Sequences. I, James M. Turner Jan 1998

Operations And Spectral Sequences. I, James M. Turner

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Using methods developed by W. Singer and J. P. May, we describe a systematic approach to showing that many spectral sequences, determined by a filtration on a complex whose homology has an action of operations, possess a compatible action of the same operations. As a consequence, we obtain \V. Singer's result for Steenrod operations on Serre spectral sequence and extend A. Bahri's action of Dyer-Lashof operations on the second quadrant Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence.
