Coercivity And Exchange Coupling In Prco:Co Nanocomposite Films, J. Ping Liu, Yi Liu, David J. Sellmyer Jun 1998

Coercivity And Exchange Coupling In Prco:Co Nanocomposite Films, J. Ping Liu, Yi Liu, David J. Sellmyer

David Sellmyer Publications

Magnetic hysteresis and intergrain exchange coupling in nanostructured PrCo:Co composite films have been investigated. The composite thin films were made by multilayer sputtering and subsequent annealing. It is found that the coercivity mechanism is related to film morphology, especially the Co phase fraction. Evidence for the hard-soft-phase exchange coupling has been found and high energy products have been obtained.

The paper presents the results of a comprehensive study of issues related to emissions of fluorine compounds from ferrous metallurgy processes carried out over the last few years. As part of this study raw materials used in these processes were analyzed in terms of fluorine content and its impact on the amount of air emissions of fluorine compounds. Also determined by measuring the concentration levels and emissions of fluorine in the gaseous and solid phase, including water-soluble compounds (considered to be toxic).

English title: Emissions of fluorine compounds from the processes of ferrous metallurgy.

Quantitative structure–activity relationship (QSAR) models are routinely used in predicting toxicologic and ecotoxicologic effects of untested chemicals. One critical factor in QSAR-based risk assessment is the proper assignment of a chemical to a mode of action and associated QSAR. In this paper, we used molecular similarity, neural networks, and discriminant analysis methods to predict acute toxic modes of action for a set of 283 chemicals. The majority of these molecules had been previously determined through toxicodynamic studies in fish to be narcotics (two classes), electrophiles/proelectrophiles, uncouplers of oxidative phosphorylation, acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, and neurotoxicants. Nonempirical parameters, such as topological indices and …

Physical Properties Of The Binary Star 12 Persei, David J. Barlow, Colin D. Scarfe, Francis C. Fekel

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We have obtained new radial velocities of the double-lined spectroscopic binary star 12 Persei, whose period is 331 days, and which has been resolved in recent years by speckle interferometry. We derive a solution for the orbital elements from the speckle and radial velocity data simultaneously, and find from that solution masses of 1.306 ± 0.035 and 1.172 ± 0.030 M☉ for the components, and an orbital parallax of 0farcs04224 ± 0farcs00056. We also determine spectroscopically the difference in magnitude between the components and, hence, their absolute magnitudes. We estimate their spectral types and individual colors by fitting standard-star colors …

Permitted Iron Emission Lines In The Classical T Tauri Star Dr Tauri, Georgina Beristain, Suzan Edwards, John Kwan

Astronomy: Faculty Publications

We present a study of permitted emission lines of Fe I and Fe II in the spectrum of the high-accretion rate classical T Tauri star DR Tau. Echelle spectra collected at the 4 m Mayall telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory between 1988 and 1992 include four epochs with red spectral coverage (~5000-6800 Å) and three with blue spectral coverage (~4000-4950 Å). A total of 62 unblended Fe I and Fe II lines are identified, their profiles are examined, and ratios of line pairs that are sensitive to column density or temperature are analyzed.

The unblended Fe profiles exhibit a …

Broadband Optical Observations Of Bl Lacertae During The 1997 Outburst, Terry D. Oswalt, Daniel Marshall, Tim Robishaw Jun 1998

Broadband Optical Observations Of Bl Lacertae During The 1997 Outburst, Terry D. Oswalt, Daniel Marshall, Tim Robishaw

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

We present BVRI observations of BL Lacertae during its recent outburst. These observations, made during a 3 month period, cover a significant portion of the optical flare. The reduced data are displayed as light curves and broadband spectra. Changes in the spectral index are analyzed, and the results are compared with previous BL Lac observations. We find that the variations are simultaneous in the optical bands, but the higher frequency bands show a higher amplitude of variability. The spectral index is variable during the active period, and there is marginal evidence that the spectrum flattens as the source gets brighter.

Magnitude And Significance Of Carbon Burial In Lakes, Reservoirs, And Peatlands, Walter E. Dean, Eville Gorham Jun 1998

Magnitude And Significance Of Carbon Burial In Lakes, Reservoirs, And Peatlands, Walter E. Dean, Eville Gorham

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Globally, lakes are currently accumulating organic carbon (OC) at an estimated annual rate of about 42 Tg•yr-1. Most of the OC in all but the most oligotrophic of these lakes is autochthonous, produced by primary production in the lakes. The sediments of reservoirs accumulate an additional 160 Tg annually, and peatlands contribute 96 Tg annually. These three carbon pools collectively cover less than 2% of the Earth’s surface and constitute a carbon sink of about 300 Tg•yr-1. Although the oceans cover 71% of the Earth’s surface, they accumulate OC at a rate of only about 100 …

Hydrogen In R2Fe17 Intermetallic Compounds: Structural, Thermodynamic, And Magnetic Properties, S. Wirth, Ralph Skomski, J.M.D. Coey Jun 1998

Hydrogen In R2Fe17 Intermetallic Compounds: Structural, Thermodynamic, And Magnetic Properties, S. Wirth, Ralph Skomski, J.M.D. Coey

Ralph Skomski Publications

The absorption and diffusion behavior of hydrogen in iron-rich rare-earth intermetallics of the type R2Fe17 (R=Y, Sm, Gd) and the resulting changes of their magnetic properties are investigated. Intermediate hydrogen concentration indicate the solid-solution character of the hydrides. From equilibrium and nonequilibrium absorption experiments net reaction energies, bulk diffusion constants, and surface barrier energies for Sm2Fe17 are determined and discussed. The low-temperature quantum diffusion is discussed for the hydride and the corresponding nitride. The interstitial modification changes drastically the crystalline electric field in the rare-earth intermetallics. For Sm2Fe17H4 the …

Finite Size Scaling In The Thin Film Limit, C. Waldfield, D. Welipitiya, T. Mcavoy, Peter A. Dowben, Elio Vescovo

Peter Dowben Publications

The thickness dependent spin-polarized electronic structure of strained thin and ultrathin films of Gd is characterized by a distinct change in the critical exponent λ in the formalism of finite size scaling. The reduced critical exponent in the ultrathin films can be correlated to the increased dominance of the surface magnetic structure and the increasing paramagnetic-like behavior of the bulk. ©1998 American Institute of Physics.

Strain Induced Alteration Of The Gadolinium Surface State, C. Waldfried, D.N. Mcilroy, T. Mcavoy, D. Welipitiya, Peter A. Dowben, Elio Vescovo

Peter Dowben Publications

Strain induced alteration of the gadolinium surface state The electronic structure of strained and unstrained Gd(0001) has been studied with photoemission, inverse photoemission, and spin-polarized photoemission. A shift of the occupied majority and unoccupied minority surface states has been observed as a result of the strain, consistent with the phase accumulation model. There is a strain induced shift of the minority spin surface state across the Fermi level. ©1998 American Institute of Physics.

Dinetic And Mechanistic Investigations Of Photocatalysis : Photoreactions Of Cr(Co)6 With Alkenes, Aaron E. Dietrich Jun 1998

Dinetic And Mechanistic Investigations Of Photocatalysis : Photoreactions Of Cr(Co)6 With Alkenes, Aaron E. Dietrich

Honors Theses

Flash photolysis has proven to be an effective technique for determining reaction mechanisms. Upon photolysis, a CO ligand is removed from Cr(CO)6 forming the reactive molecular fragment Cr(C0)5. In the presence of alkene, L, Cr(CO)s can react to form the meta-stable intermediate Cr(C0)5L. At high L concentrations, Cr(CO)5L decays by pseudo-first-order kinetics with an observed rate constant, kobs, which is dependent on the concentration of both L and added CO. The exar.t nature of the dependence provides insight into the mechanism of the decay of Cr(C0)5L and a plot of 1/kobs vs. [L] will give the rate constants for both …

Studies Directed Toward The Enantioselective Addition Of Reformatsky Reagents To Aldimines, Lamyaa Hassib

Honors Theses

Interest in β-amino esters and β-lactams has grown significantly due to their applications in the synthesis of compounds of pharmaceutical interest. Examples include β-lactam antibiotics such as the penicillin and carbapenem families. Because β-lactams and β-amino esters share a common pathway, methods to prepare either are often contaminated and thus complicated by the formation of the other. We have developed convenient and highly controllable method which can afford either product cleanly.

The Mössbauer spectra of a series of rhombohedral Tb2Fe17-xSix solid solutions, with x equal to 0, 1, 2, and 3, have been measured as a function of temperature. Although the spectra of Tb2Fe17 change substantially upon cooling from 295 to 85 K, it has been possible to fit them with a consistent seven sextet model corresponding to a basal magnetization. The spectral analysis yields reasonable hyperfine parameters and the expected changes with temperature. The resulting weighted average effective iron recoil mass of 66 g/mol and the Mössbauer temperature of 395 K are …
