John Nowak was born March 22, 1947, in New York City and was raised in Westchester County, just north of New York City. After graduating from Colorado State University with a B.S. degree in farm and ranch management, he entered the U.S. Army. John served on active duty from 1969 until 1978. In 1975, his Army career brought him to Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and he began farming part-time in Christian County in 1976. As with many "start-from-scratch" farmers, John's first farming efforts involved producing burley tobacco during the years 1976 through 1979. In 1979, he began a cow-calf and backgrounding …

There has been interest in alfalfa varieties that would tolerate grazing for some time. The spreading type alfalfas (such as Rambler, Spredor 2, Travois) have long been generally promoted as being tolerant of grazing. Over the years, most selection for tolerance to grazing was done using frequent clipping to simulate grazing.

Studies conducted at the University of Georgia in the 1980's found that alfalfa varieties performed differently when grazed frequently compared to clipping frequently. This line of research eventually led to the release of 'AlfaGraze' alfalfa which was the first variety ever to be selected primarily by overgrazing by livestock. …

Hay stores well for long periods and is better suited to cash sale and transportation than silage and remains the most popular method for harvesting the alfalfa crop. Rapid drying reduces field losses by reducing respiration and by reducing the incidence of rain damage during curing. Because of these factors, harvest losses are greatest for very dry forage and are low for very wet material like direct cut silage. However, the latter is subject to excessive storage losses due to seepage and to quality deterioration. Storage losses are generally minimized by harvesting at low moisture levels.

Farmers often would like to go directly back into alfalfa when an old stand plays out. However, research has shown that it is often difficult to get new stands established when this is done. Some of the problems may be attributed to weeds, insects and diseases that build up over time and become difficult to control. Another reason is that alfalfa plants have been shown to produce chemical compounds that can inhibit germination and growth of new seedlings. This effect is called allelopathy or autotoxicity.

There are no magic steps to getting a good stand. Attention to a few major details can help maximize your chances of success.

Alfalfa is the "queen" of forages, but many situations exist where it is desirable or necessary to grow alfalfa in a mixture with a forage grass rather in monoculture. Some of the reasons to grow grass with alfalfa are: improved yield (in terms of tons of dry matter produced), better seasonal yield distribution, better weed control, potential pest reduction, erosion prevention, bloat risk reduction, and accelerated hay-drying rates. Conversely, there are some factors that favor alfalfa monoculture. These include: lower forage quality, especially in terms of protein content; more difficult management requirements (herbicide use, fertilization, and harvest timing); and, lower …

Macrocyclic antibiotics having ring structures with at least 10 members act as separation agents in crystallization, precipitation, filtration, electrophoresis and chromatography. The macrocyclic antibiotics include ansamacrolides, macrolides, marocyclic peptides, polyenes and derivatives thereof. The process has been found to be especially advantageous for separation of optical isomers by electrophoresis and chromatography.

We present the results of a velocity correlation study of the high-latitude cloud MBM 16 using a fully sampled 12CO map, supplemented by new 13CO data. We find a correlation length of 0.4 pc. This is similar in size to the formaldehyde clumps described in our previous study. We associate this correlated motion with coherent structures within the turbulent flow. Such structures are generated by free shear flows. Their presence in this non-star-forming cloud indicates that kinetic energy is being supplied to the internal turbulence by an external shear flow. Two stands in a loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) plantation were established in southeastern Louisiana in 1981 at three initial planting densities (1.2 x 1.2m, 2.4 m., and 3.6 x 3.6m). Height, height to the base of the live crown, and DBH measurements taken in consecutive years, coupled with allometric equations, yielded estimates of annual stand level foliage, branchwood, and stemwood biomass increment in each plot. Stemwood, branchwood, first-year foliage, second year foliage, and litter tissues were obtained in each plot and analyzed for nitrogen concentration, and were used to provide estimates of annual foliar nitrogen retranslocation and above-ground …

Holocene Climate In Coastal Peru: Potential Implications For Climate Dynamics During The Hypsithermal Period, James D. Wright

This pilot study will analyze stable isotopes in planktic foraminifera in sediment cores off the coast of Peru for the Holocene interval. In many regions of the world the early Holocene is believed to have been a time of warmer-than modern temperatures. Data derived from Peruvian middens give conflicting evidence as to whether this period was somewhat warmer or cooler than today. The foraminiferal data should provide a record of sea surface temperatures and seasonal upwelling along coastal Peru throughout the Holocene, including the period of human coastal settlement.

On August 19, 1992, the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) onboard NOAA-12 and NASA's Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) onboard the Nimbus-7 satellite simultaneously detected and mapped the ash cloud from the eruption of Mt. Spurr, Alaska. The spatial extent and geometry of the cloud derived from the two datasets are in good agreement and both AVHRR split window IR (11–12µm brightness temperature difference) and the TOMS UV Aerosol Index (0.34–0.38µm ultraviolet backscattering and absorption) methods give the same range of total cloud ash mass. Redundant methods for determination of ash masses in drifting volcanic clouds offer many advantages …

Physics - All Scholarship

The CLEO-III Detector upgrade for charged particle identification is discussed. The RICH design uses solid LiF crystal radiators coupled with multi-wire chamber photon detectors, using TEA as the photosensor, and low-noise Viking readout electronics. Results from our beam test at Fermilab are presented.

Valence-band photoemission studies have been performed on a CoO(100) single crystal as it is slowly oxidized under 1×10-4 Torr O2 at 623 K, eventually forming a Co3O4 epitaxial film. The most significant changes occur in 3d-related features, with the peak located at the top of the valence band sharpening and shifting to lower binding energies as the spinel oxide forms. Constant initial-state measurements indicate that Co3O4 contains admixture from neighboring O 2p in its 3d band, as observed for CoO and other monoxide charge-transfer insulators. Two barrelene homologs are reported. Strain in the bicyclic framework of [2,3:5,6]dibenzo[2.2.2]octa-2,5,7- triene, (I) (C16H12), which is manifest in the deviations from ideality of the bond angles in the central bicyclic ringoSyStem and compression of the double bond [1.312 (3)A], is reduced in the more saturated derivative, [2,3:5,6]dibenzo[2.2.2]octa-2,5-diene, (II) (CI6H14), with the corresponding single bond being 1.5380 (19)A. The formation of isomorphs of (I) in both chiral (C2) and achiral (C2/c) space groups has implications for asymmetric syntheses involving solid (I) which rely on a non-centrosymmetric space group.

Nucleation free-energy barrier height and size of the critical nucleus are expanded in powers of the chemical potential difference between the supersaturated vapor (or expanded liquid) in the metastable state and the saturated vapor-liquid system in the stable equilibrium state at the same temperature. The coefficients in the expansions are expressed in terms of the thermodynamic properties at the stable equilibrium state. Comparisons with the results obtained from the density-functional calculation for nucleation of the Lennard–Jones fluid show that systematic improvement in predicting properties of the critical nucleus, either liquid droplet or vapor cavity, is achieved by adding the higher …

The low-temperature driven or thermally activated motion of several condensed matter systems is often modeled by the dynamics of interfaces (co-dimension-1 elastic manifolds) subject to a random potential. Two characteristic quantitative features of the energy landscape of such a many-degree-of-freedom system are the ground-state energy and the magnitude of the energy barriers between given configurations. While the numerical determination of the former can be accomplished in time polynomial in the system size, it is shown here that the problem of determining the latter quantity is NP-complete. The spectrum emitted by any astronomical plasma is sensitive to a variety of details, some of which may not be obviously important. This paper describes the sensitivity of the He I 2.06 μm line to the gas opacity at ionizing energies. The intensity of the line relative to a hydrogen line depends on the He+/H+ ratio, but also on the ratio of continuous to He I Lyα line opacity, since this determines whether the Lyα line can scatter often enough to be converted to the 2.06 μm line. Presents expressions for the cumulative reaction probability (N(E)), cast in terms of time-correlation functions of reactant and product wave packets. Beginning of the derivation with a standard trace expression for the cumulative reaction probability; Expression for N(E) obtained in terms of the correlation matrices of incoming and outgoing wave packets.
