Computer Assistance For "Discovering'' Formulas In System Engineering And Operator Theory, J. W. Helton, Mark Stankus Feb 1999

Computer Assistance For "Discovering'' Formulas In System Engineering And Operator Theory, J. W. Helton, Mark Stankus

Mathematics

The objective of this paper is two-fold. First we present a methodology for using a combination of computer assistance and human intervention to discover highly algebraic theorems in operator, matrix, and linear systems engineering theory. Since the methodology allows limited human intervention, it is slightly less rigid than an algorithm. We call it a strategy. The second objective is to illustrate the methodology by deriving four theorems. The presentation of the methodology is carried out in three steps. The first step is introducing an abstraction of the methodology which we call an idealized strategy. This abstraction facilitates a high level …

Langmuir Monolayers As Disordered Solids: Strain-Tilt-Backbone Coupling And Natural Order Parameters For The Swiveling Transitions, Tadeusz Luty, David R. Swanson, Craig J. Eckhardt Feb 1999

Langmuir Monolayers As Disordered Solids: Strain-Tilt-Backbone Coupling And Natural Order Parameters For The Swiveling Transitions, Tadeusz Luty, David R. Swanson, Craig J. Eckhardt

Craig J. Eckhardt Publications

Multistability of Langmuir monolayers, in particular those composed of fatty acids, is reflected by a very rich and complicated phase diagram. We argue that strain-tilt-backbone coupling determines the behavior described by that diagram. Following the solid state approach, we show that a natural order parameter set is defined by thermal averages of spherical harmonics and strain tensor components. In addition, we show that the backbone order parameter can be conveniently represented by an elastic dipole tensor. Treating Langmuir monolayers as disordered solids, we have derived an orientational entropy contribution to the free energy. The swiveling transition between L2 ( …

Rainfall Climatology Of Jammu And Kashmir State, India, Badrul Hasan

Drought Network News (1994-2001)

We have written a number of articles on various aspects of weather characterization and forecast verification under temperate environments of Jammu and Kashmir (India). We have also touched on some of the approaches that might help in solving climatically triggered problems (Hasan and Kanth 1997). Fortunately, we were lucky enough to make significant progress in some (if not all) of the approaches. The present article focuses on an analysis of rainfall/ precipitation in this state of the Indian Union under different agroclimatic zones, with an update on forecast verification analysis of temperate Kashmir (India) during 1997–98.

India is classified into …

Using The Spi To Analyze Spatial And Temporal Patterns Of Drought In Turkey, Ali Umran Komuscu Feb 1999

Using The Spi To Analyze Spatial And Temporal Patterns Of Drought In Turkey, Ali Umran Komuscu

Drought Network News (1994-2001)

Drought is a natural phenomenon that has significant economic, social, and environmental impacts. Drought differs from other natural hazards in that its onset and end are difficult to determine. It develops slowly, and its impacts may remain for years after termination of the event. No single definition of drought exists that applies to all circumstances, but most definitions of drought are based on an expression of deficiency of precipitation resulting in water shortage for some activity related to use of water (Wilhite and Glantz, 1985; Dracup et al., 1980). Water resources planners usually rely on quantitative indices to decide whether …

Heat Waves And Floods Across Asia: Was El Niño, Then La Niña The Cause?, R. H. Kripalani, Ashwini Kulkarni Feb 1999

Heat Waves And Floods Across Asia: Was El Niño, Then La Niña The Cause?, R. H. Kripalani, Ashwini Kulkarni

Drought Network News (1994-2001)

Unprecedented heat wave conditions occurred during May–June 1998 across Asia. Unusually high temperatures were recorded in western India, Pakistan, eastern China, Japan, and Southeast Asia. Even the United States, western Africa, eastern Canada, and western Australia experienced the blistering heat spell.

Some reports blame people for the global warming. The world is warming because of the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation, resulting in an increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The 1998 heat wave prompted the United Nations Environment Programme to issue an urgent warning and a wakeup call to limit the emission of global warming gases. The …

Severe Droughts Becoming Recurrent, More Persistent In Mexico, Israel Velasco Feb 1999

Severe Droughts Becoming Recurrent, More Persistent In Mexico, Israel Velasco

Drought Network News (1994-2001)

During recent years, severe and extreme droughts in Mexico and their consequent water deficits have become more recurrent and persistent, according to historic records and the experiences of those who have lived through these events.

In Mexico, agriculture consumes more than 85% of the available water. When the available water is insufficient to satisfy agricultural requirements, impacts can be acute. In extreme cases, lack of water has caused severe economic, social, and environmental crises, and recovery from these crises has taken much time and money.

The regions that are most affected by drought have some common characteristics: they are the …

From The Director: February 1999, Donald A. Wilhite

Drought Network News (1994-2001)

Many of the readers of Drought Network News are familiar with the “hydro-illogical cycle” cartoon that I use frequently in presentations and publications. This illustration has been translated into many languages and serves as a constant reminder of the crisis management mentality often displayed in responding to drought emergencies and the proverbial “window of opportunity” following a drought when planning for the next event is of high priority. I hear comments routinely from government officials that recognize the need to plan, but they express hesitancy in moving forward now if water supply conditions are normal or above. The concern is …

Early Evolution Of A Stratospheric Volcanic Eruption Cloud As Observed With Toms And Avhrr, David J. Schneider, William I. Rose, Larry R. Coke, Gregg J. Bluth, Ian E. Sprod, Arlin J. Krueger

Department of Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences Publications

This paper is a detailed study of remote sensing data from the total ozone mapping spectrometer (TOMS) and the advanced very high resolution radiometer (AVHRR) satellite detectors, of the 1982 eruption of El Chichón, Mexico. The volcanic cloud/atmosphere interactions in the first four days of this eruption were investigated by combining ultraviolet retrievals to estimate the mass of sulfur dioxide in the volcanic cloud [Krueger et al., 1995] with thermal infrared retrievals of the size, optical depth, and mass of fine-grained (1–10 μm radius) volcanic ash [Wen and Rose, 1994]. Our study provides the first direct evidence of gravitational separation …

Bulletin of the Mineral Research and Exploration

A sub-adult skull from the Late Miocene of Kavakdere, desciribed and referred to the Indian genus Bramatherium. increases the similarity between the Indian sub-continent and the Greco-Iranian province. The contents and subdivisions of the subfamily Sivatheriinae are reviewed, with 2 main groups being recognized, based upon the homologies and position of horns. They are perhaps both of western European origin.

Bulletin of the Mineral Research and Exploration

In this study, the geology, mineralogy, petrography, geochemistry, wall-rock alteration, ore-wall-rock relations, micro structural and textural relations in the copper-pyrite mineralization in Kızmehmet site (Ispendere-Malatya) and its vicinity were investigated. Ispendere Ophiolite (Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous), Yüksekova complex (Upper Cretaceous) and Kırkgeçit formation (Middle Eocene) crop out in the study area, which is located in Malatya-Elazığ region of the Eastern Taurus orogenic belt. Yüksekova complex is formed by Kuluşağı magmatites, Kapıkaya volcanics, Şişman magmatites and Harabe hill magmatites. Harabe hill magmatites cut all of the mentioned rocks in the complex and caused to form all of alteration types and different mineralizations in …

Invariant Measure For Diffusions With Jumps, Jose-Luis Menaldi, Maurice Robin Feb 1999

Invariant Measure For Diffusions With Jumps, Jose-Luis Menaldi, Maurice Robin

Mathematics Faculty Research Publications

Our purpose is to study an ergodic linear equation associated to diffusion processes with jumps in the whole space. This integro-differential equation plays a fundamental role in ergodic control problems of second order Markov processes. The key result is to prove the existence and uniqueness of an invariant density function for a jump diffusion, whose lower order coefficients are only Borel measurable. Based on this invariant probability, existence and uniqueness (up to an additive constant) of solutions to the ergodic linear equation are established.
