Q-Calculus And Irreversible Dynamics On A Hierarchical Lattice, Ayşe Erzan, Ayşe Gorbon Jan 1999

Q-Calculus And Irreversible Dynamics On A Hierarchical Lattice, Ayşe Erzan, Ayşe Gorbon

Turkish Journal of Physics

On a lattice with equal spacing on the logarithmic scale, a momentum operator that respects the asymmetry of this nonlinear lattice yields a kinetics that can be understood in terms of diffusion on an underlying ultrametric space, if one also identifies the cannonical commutator with the time dilation operator. The motion to which this non-conventional kinetics corresponds is irreversible, with an explicit violation of time reversal symmetry resulting from the spreading with time of a probability distribution over a larger and larger volume of the phase space.

Dynamical Evolution Of The Rs Cvn-Type Binaries, Osman Demi̇rcan Jan 1999

Dynamical Evolution Of The Rs Cvn-Type Binaries, Osman Demi̇rcan

Turkish Journal of Physics

The orbital angular momentum (orbital AM) of a sample of forty RS CVn-type binaries with the orbital periods P \leq 10 days were estimated and the orbital AM distribution with respect to P was critically interpreted as the orbital AM evolution of these systems caused by the magnetic breaking process with the existence of spin-orbit coupling. The empirical relations (between the orbital AM loss, mass loss and period variation) derived from the diagram of the orbital AM distribution were used in deriving a semi-empirical formula for the dynamical evolution of the RS CVn-type binaries. The magnetic breaking induced dynamical evolution …

Semiconductor And Dielectric Microcavity Spectroscopy, Ali̇ Serpengüzel Jan 1999

Semiconductor And Dielectric Microcavity Spectroscopy, Ali̇ Serpengüzel

Turkish Journal of Physics

Semiconductor and dielectric microcavities are used for the localization of photons as well as the enhancement of photon density of states. The enhancement of photoluminescence, electroluminescence, and lasing by the use of microcavities leads to novel active and passive optoelectronic and photonic devices such as channel droppping filters, semiconductor lasers, and resonant cavity enhanced devices. Experimental results showing photoluminescence enhancement in active planar, lasing in active ellipsoidal microcavities as well as light scattering in passive and spherical microcavities are presented.

Rapid Optical Variability In Radio-Quiet Quasars, Meenakshi Uppal Jan 1999

Rapid Optical Variability In Radio-Quiet Quasars, Meenakshi Uppal

Theses

Results from imaging and spectral surveys at radio wavelengths indicate that radio quiet quasars (RQQs) may have accretion-fuelled Super Massive Black Holes (SMBH) as their so-called central engines, similar to those hypothesised for radio loud quasars (RLQs). Recent evidence suggests that some RQQs may also harbour weak jets. Rapid optical variability is a common property of most RLQs with compact radio cores, flat radio spectra, and extended linear features emanating from the core and is linked to the presence of a powerful relativistically boosted jet. We present the results of a 3 year monitoring campaign of sixteen RQQs displaying evidence …

How Do Judges Think About Risk?, W. Kip Viscusi Jan 1999

How Do Judges Think About Risk?, W. Kip Viscusi

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

A sample of almost 100 judges exhibited well-known patterns of biases in risk beliefs and reasonable implicit values of life. These biases and personal preferences largely do not affect attitudes toward judicial risk decisions, though there are some exceptions, such as ambiguity aversion, misinterpretation of negligence rules, and retrospective risk assessments in accident cases, which is a form of hindsight bias. Although judges avoided many pitfalls exhibited by jurors and the population at large, they nevertheless exhibited systematic errors, particularly for small probability-large loss events. These findings highlighted the importance of judicial review and the input of expert risk analysts …

Using Omissive Faults To Obtain Local Convergence In Partially Connected Networks, M. H. Azadmanesh, A. W. Krings Jan 1999

Using Omissive Faults To Obtain Local Convergence In Partially Connected Networks, M. H. Azadmanesh, A. W. Krings

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Approximate Agreement is an important issue in faulttolerant distributed computing where non-faulty processes exchange and vote upon their local values, to arrive at values which are within the range of the initial values of the nonfaulty processes and within a predefined tolerance of each other. Results to date in Approximate Agreement, however, are not capable of exploiting omission faults. Omission faults are presumed not to occur or a predefined default value is substituted for those values not received, or they are globally discarded before the voting algorithm executes. As a result, hybrid fault models can not differentiate between omissive and …

An Endophytic Fungus As A Source Of New Antifungal Compounds, Lisa Marie Jungbauer Jan 1999

An Endophytic Fungus As A Source Of New Antifungal Compounds, Lisa Marie Jungbauer

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

Medical advances in society such as organ transplants, prolonged chemotherapy, and those that lengthen the lives of AIDS patients and the elderly increase the number of immunocompromised individuals(1). When the immune system is compromised, opportunistic fungi can flourish and become fatal. Current antifungal treatments are limited and often toxic(2,3). In addition, strains of fungi resistant to available antifungals are emerging(4,5). Fungi were selected as the source of potential new antifungal agents because fungal antagonism has been reported in most fungal ecosystems(6). Endophytic fungi, which inhabit the spaces between plant cells, are known producers of natural products and that assist plants …

Warm Water Formation And Escape In The Upper Tropical Atlantic Ocean - 2. A Numerical Model Study, Sang-Ki Lee, G. T. Csanady Jan 1999

Warm Water Formation And Escape In The Upper Tropical Atlantic Ocean - 2. A Numerical Model Study, Sang-Ki Lee, G. T. Csanady

CCPO Publications

We seek the simplest mass and heat balance scenario within the upper tropical Atlantic Ocean using a 2.5-layer numerical model, with the help of a newly suggested entrainment formula. The model ocean is driven by the seasonal wind and heat flux associated with the movement of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). The entrainment rate is scaled by the product of wind stress and shear at the bottom of the mixed layer. On an annual average, the northward transport of the tropical warm water is about 11 Sv, with roughly 10 Sv associated with entrainment of upper thermocline water. Out of …

Real Time Two Color Variable Resolution Video Moire And Error Map Moire Using A Mach-Zehnder Interferometer, Neville Maycock, August Schutte, Joel H. Blatt Jan 1999

Real Time Two Color Variable Resolution Video Moire And Error Map Moire Using A Mach-Zehnder Interferometer, Neville Maycock, August Schutte, Joel H. Blatt

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

A variable resolution two color video moire system has been built which uses a dual laser illuminated Mach-Zehnder interferometer as the fringe projector. One input of the interferometer is illuminated by a He-Ne laser and the other by an Argon-Ion laser, allowing simultaneous projection of red and green fringes with different spatial frequencies. The dual interferometer outputs are also used, allowing illumination of both the target and reference surfaces. Video cameras view the two surfaces and by mixing the video signals with a chroma-key mix in a video special effects generator, real time moire can be observed. A piezo-electrically driven …
