An efficient and accurate algorithm for solving the two-dimensional (2D) incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on a disk with no-slip boundary conditions is described. The vorticity stream function formulation of these equations is used, and spatially the vorticity and stream functions are expressed as Fourier-Chebyshev expansions. The Poisson and Helmholtz equations which arise from the implicit-explicit time marching scheme are solved as banded systems using a postconditioned spectral tau-method. The polar coordinate singularity is handled by expanding fields radially over the entire diameter using a parity modified Chebyshev series and building partial regularity into the vorticity. The Handbook provides land managers with information relating to the natural resources of the Shire of Toodyay, including the original and existing vegetation, drainage systems and soils. The rate of passage of molecules of carbon dioxide and nitrogen through the vapor–liquid interface of water at 300 K is studied by simulation. Previous work has established the form of the free energy profile which has a minimum when the solute molecule is on the surface and a barrier between this state and solution in the bulk liquid. In one set of simulations, trajectories were initiated in the gas phase. From these, the average lifetime of molecules in the surface is determined to be considerably longer than the inverse of the energy relaxation rate, so that the sticking coefficient …

Satus Creek provides critical habitat for the Yakima River Basin steelhead. A diverse community of riparian vegetation is important for healthy fish habitat; vegetation changes can affect shade, cover, channel structure, water quality, and food availability. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze and illustrate riparian vegetation change, both temporally and spatially, along three separate reaches of Satus Creek. A Geographic Information Systems approach was applied to assess the vegetation change by comparing plant species composition and density on 1949 and 1995 aerial photographs. We assess the noise characteristics in time series of daily position estimates for 23 globally distributed Global Positioning System (GPS) stations with 3 years of data, using spectral analysis and Maximum Likelihood Estimation. A combination of white noise and flicker noise appears to be the best model for the noise characteristics of all three position components. Both white and flicker noise amplitudes are smallest in the north component and largest in the vertical component. The white noise part of the vertical component is higher for tropical stations (±23° latitude) compared to midlatitude stations. Velocity error in a GPS coordinate time …

Testosterone acetate thiosemicarbazone (TATSC, 17-β-hydroxyandrost-4-one acetate thiosemicarbazone) was synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray structure determination. The copper and platinum complexes of this steroid derivative were synthesized and characterized by spectroscopy and electrochemiatry. The in vitro activity of these compounds against human breast cancer cell line MCF-7 was tested. The highest activity was found for the [Pt(TATSC)Cl 2] followed by [Cu(TATSC)Cl 2] and the ligand in compariosn with cisplatin.

Pentosan polysulfate, a semisynthetic polysaccharide, was employed as a chiral un buffer additive in capillary electrophoresis. Twenty-eight racemic analytes were resolved. The separations were successful only at low pH when the analytes were significantly protonated. This suggests that ionic interactions were the dominant associative interactions between the anionic pentosan polysulfate and the positively charged analytes. Compared to other linear, carbohydrate-based chiral selectors (i.e., chondroitin sulfates, heparin and dextran sulfate) pentosan polysulfate has some characteristics common of anionic polysaccharides; yet it has several differences in its structure and properties which account for its unusual enantioselectivity. There has been recent theoretical interest in supersymmetry breaking scenarios in which the gauginos are light compared to the squarks. One prediction of these light gluino models is the existence of the R 0 hadron (gg?£). Brookhaven National Laboratory AGS Experiment 935 (E935) searched for light gluinos through the appearance of pi+pi- pairs with invariant mass Mpipi > 545 MeV/c2 in a high flux neutral beam. The search has yielded one candidate event. This event is consistent with the anticipated background of 1.4 events due to interactions of neutrons in the beam with the residual gas in the evacuated decay region. …
