Linking Printed Books To Computerized Speech, Edward D. Crook Jan 1999

Linking Printed Books To Computerized Speech, Edward D. Crook

CCE Theses and Dissertations

Adult students who experience difficulties in comprehending written (printed) language frequently are limited in their scholastic development and possible employment opportunities. These individuals, who represent a growing segment of the learning disabled population, include poor readers and dyslexics and they routinely seek help and remediation through various educational techniques. One remediation technique often used is "books on tape". Through books on tape, recorded spoken text is presented in a sequential manner to the remedial reader as he or she is reading the corresponding printed document. This dissertation reviewed the books on tape paradigm, and through the use of current computer …

International Usability, Design Guidelines And Effectiveness Of A World Wide Web-Based Instructional Program For High School Students In A Cross-Culture Learning Environment, Hajime Hayakawa

CCE Theses and Dissertations

The recent growth of the Internet and the World Wide Web (WWW) has resulted in a vast array of on-line courseware and educational Web sites. Unfortunately, as a large percentage of this information is written in English, non-English speakers are unable to access it. Information written in other languages is likewise unavailable to many native English speakers. Therefore, in order to maximize the usefulness of educational material on the Web, it is necessary to design and implement cross-cultural, bilingual or multilingual Web sites and instructional programs.

This study was designed to contribute to the area of bilingual learning on the …

A Theoretical Model For A Prescription Drug Public Key Cryptographic System, Donald R. Lemma Jan 1999

A Theoretical Model For A Prescription Drug Public Key Cryptographic System, Donald R. Lemma

CCE Theses and Dissertations

A critical component of a physician's duties is prescribing medication to his or her patients. This process is handled by the physician writing a prescription for a medication and having the medication dispensed to the named patient. A review of federal law reveals no requirement that the prescription be issued on any type of specific written instrument such as safety paper, multi-part forms, or other standardized documents.

Because of the lack of adequate controls, there is a serious problem with false and altered prescriptions being issued within the United States. A 1994 study by the White House Office of National …

A Study Of The Computerized Reading Management Program, Accelerated Reader, And Its Effect On Reading Among Primary Grade Students, Mitchell O. Pratt

CCE Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the computerized reading management program, Accelerated Reader and its effect on primary grade students. The purpose of the study was to test Accelerated Reader's effect on reading comprehension among two student populations that were demographically similar. Two schools were chosen, Orem Elementary, School A, where the researcher is employed, and School B, another elementary school in Alpine School District. An ex post facto, non-randomized control group design was used. Data from the Utah Core Assessment Series End-of-Level, Reading, Level 3 Form A, (1989) and the Stanford Achievement Test (1990) was used. Students who attended either School A …

Enterprise based object oriented (OO) and Unified Modeling Language (UML) modeling makes it possible to build the needed visual environments to organize people, technologies and activities (Arias, 1999d). In our modeling approach, the focus is on "things and relationships between things" described in commonly used terms. The modeling software bridges the so-called "semantic gap" between the people and the computer language (Booch, Rumbaugh & Jacobson, 1999). An object can be a product, a process, a person, a team, a company, an application or the inter-relationship between other objects. Objects can be pictured on the screen as maps formed by personalized …

Avoparcin, A New Macrocyclic Antibiotic Chiral Run Buffer Additive For Capillary Electrophoresis, K. Helen Ekborg-Ott, Gina A. Zientara, Jeffrey M. Schneiderheinze, Kyung Gahm, Daniel W. Armstrong

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Avoparcin, like vancomycin, teicoplanin, and ristocetin A, belongs to the family of macrocyclic glycopeptide antibiotics. These antibiotics have all been used as effective chiral selectors for capillary electrophoresis (CE), thin-layer chromatography (TLC), and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The present work focuses on avoparcin, which has been shown to be an excellent chiral selector for the CE enantioseparation of many N-blocked amino acids, as well as several anti-inflammatory drugs of pharmaceutical importance. The use of avoparcin as a chiral run buffer additive in CE is discussed, as well as the effects of changing experimental parameters, like avoparcin concentration, pH, organic modifiers, …

Spin Dependent Tunneling, Peter M. Levy, Shufeng Zhang

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

During the past four years, researchers made significant advances in fabricating magnetic tunnel junctions with reproducible magnetic and magneto transport properties. Important developments include optimization of oxidation processes, discovery of new class of magnetic tunnel junctions, combination of spin dependent tunneling with the Coulomb blockade effect, and a better theoretical understanding of the I-V characteristics of magnetic tunnel junctions. These developments make them promising candidates for magnetic random-access memories. © Elsevier Science Ltd.

History Of The Forum On Physics And Society, David W. Hafemeister Jan 1999

History Of The Forum On Physics And Society, David W. Hafemeister

Physics

Physics is a major component of many of society's difficult issues: nuclear arms and their proliferation, energy shortages and energy impacts, climate change and technical innovation. Because physics principles underlie so many of these societal issues and because physics offers a way to quantify some aspects of them, members of the American Physical Society (APS) should be encouraged to understand, analyze and debate them. That's precisely why APS members formed the Forum on Physics and Society (FPS). To those of us who have been long involved in FPS affairs, it seems but yesterday that we attended the organizing meeting at …

The inclusive forward jet cross section in deep inelastic e+p scattering has been measured in the region of cursive Greek chi-Bjorken, 4.5 · 10-4 to 4.5 · 10-2. This measurement is motivated by the search for effects of BFKL-like parton shower evolution. The cross section at hadron level as a function of cursive Greek chi is compared to cross sections predicted by various Monte Carlo models. An excess of forward jet production at small cursive Greek chi is observed, which is not reproduced by models based on DGLAP parton shower evolution. The Colour Dipole model describes the data reasonably well. …

The e+p neutral-current deep inelastic scattering differential cross-sections dσ/dQ2, for Q2 > 400 GeV2, dσ/dx and dσ/dy, for Q2 > 400, 2500 and 10000 GeV2, have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The data sample of 47.7 pb-1 was collected at a center-of-mass energy of 300 GeV. The cross-section, dσ/dQ2, falls by six orders of magnitude between Q2 = 400 and 40000 GeV2. The predictions of the Standard Model are in very good agreement with the data. Complementing the observations of time-like Z° contributions to fermion-antifermion annihilation, the data provide direct evidence for the presence of Z° exchange in the …

Charged particle production in neutral current deep inelastic scattering (DIS) has been studied using the ZEUS detector. The evolution of the mean multiplicities, scaled momenta and transverse momenta in Q2 and cursive Greek chi for 10 < Q2 < 5120 GeV2 and cursive Greek chi > 6 × 10-4 has been investigated in the current and target fragmentation regions of the Breit frame. Distributions in the target region, using HERA data for the first time, are compared to distributions in the current region. Predictions based on MLLA and LPHD are inconsistent with the data.

New Kinematic Models For Pacific-North America Motion From 3 Ma To Present, I: Evidence For Steady Motion And Biases In The Nuvel-1a Model, Charles Demets, Timothy H. Dixon

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

We use velocities derived from 2–4.5 years of continuous GPS observations at 21 sites on the Pacific and North American plates along with a subset of the NUVEL-1A data to examine the steadiness of Pacific-North America motion since 3.16 Ma, the transfer of Baja California to the Pacific plate, and the magnitude of biases in the NUVEL-1A estimate of Pacific-North America motion. We find that Pacific-North America motion has remained steady since 3.16 Ma, but at rates significantly faster than predicted by NUVEL-1A. In the vicinity of Baja California, our GPS-derived model and recent seafloor spreading rates in the southern …

Feedback Based Dynamic Proportion Allocation For Disk I/O, Dan Revel, Dylan Mcnamee, Calton Pu, David Steere, Jonathan Walpole Jan 1999

Feedback Based Dynamic Proportion Allocation For Disk I/O, Dan Revel, Dylan Mcnamee, Calton Pu, David Steere, Jonathan Walpole

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this paper we propose to use feedback control to automatically allocate disk bandwidth in order to match the rate of disk I/O to the real-rate needs of applications. We describe a model for adaptive resource management based on measuring the relative progress of stages in a producer-consumer pipeline. We show how to use prefetching to transform a passive disk into an active data producer whose progress can be controlled via feedback. Our progress-based framework allows the integrated control of multiple resources. The resulting system automatically adapts to varying application rates as well as to varying device latencies.

The Predictability Of Punitive Damages Awards In Published Opinions, The Impact Of Bmw V. Gore On Punitive Damages Awards, And Forecasting Which Punitive Awards Will Be Reduced, Theodore Eisenberg, Martin T. Wells

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

This article assesses the relation between compensatory damages and punitive damages in cases leading to published opinions and BMW v. Gore's impact on the patterns of punitive damages awards in these opinions. We find that punitive damages awards are considerably higher in cases leading to published opinions than in trial level cases. But the correlation between compensatory and punitive awards found in trial level data persists in published opinions and is all but indistinguishable from the correlation in trial level data. We find no significant difference in the pattern of awards before and after BMW and no significant difference …
