Criteria Of Le Page Type In Involutive Banach Algebras, Abdellah El Kinani, Mohamed Oudadess Jan 1999

Criteria Of Le Page Type In Involutive Banach Algebras, Abdellah El Kinani, Mohamed Oudadess

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

The Le Page inequality in Banach algebras is \parallel xy \parallel\leq\alpha\parallel yx\parallel. We consider inequalities where a linear involution appears and has consequences on the involution itself and commutativity results.^1

Segal Algebra As An Ideal In Its Second Dual Space, Heybet S. Mustafayev Jan 1999

Segal Algebra As An Ideal In Its Second Dual Space, Heybet S. Mustafayev

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

For a locally compact group G, let S(G) be a symmetric Segal algebra. We prove that S(G) is an ideal in its second dual space if and only if G is compact, where the second dual is equipped with an Arens multiplication.

Some Results On Space-Like Line Congruences And Their Space-Like Parameter Ruled Surface, E. Özyilmaz Jan 1999

Some Results On Space-Like Line Congruences And Their Space-Like Parameter Ruled Surface, E. Özyilmaz

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Using dual vectors, space-like ruled surfaces was introduced in [2]. In this paper, we define space-like line congruence and their space-like parameter ruled surfaces {\mathbf R_{11}(t)} and {\mathbf R_{21}(t)} of R_1^3. Then, by choosing space-like parameter ruled surfaces as space-like principle ruled surfaces, we obtain some relations among the magnitudes of space-like ruled surfaces {\mathbf R_1(t)}, {\mathbf R_{11}(t)}.

Cycloidal Normal Subgroups Of Hecke Groups Of Finite Index, İsmai̇l Naci̇ Cangül, Osman Bi̇zi̇m Jan 1999

Cycloidal Normal Subgroups Of Hecke Groups Of Finite Index, İsmai̇l Naci̇ Cangül, Osman Bi̇zi̇m

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Cycloidal normal subgroups, that is, subgroups with only one cusp, of finite index of Hecke groups, which have been introduced by E. Hecke, and can be thought of as some kind of generalisation of the well-known modular group, are studied. It is shown that they correspond to cyclic quotients of Hecke groups and therefore have non-compact associated Riemann surfaces with a cusp. Finally, their total number have been formulated.

Generalized Solutions Of A Class Of Linear And Quasi-Linear Degenerated Hyperbolic Equations, Rossitza Semerdjieva Jan 1999

Generalized Solutions Of A Class Of Linear And Quasi-Linear Degenerated Hyperbolic Equations, Rossitza Semerdjieva

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

The equation $L(u):=k(y)u_{xx}-\partial_y(\ell(y)u_y)+r(x,y)u=f(x,y,u),$ where $k(y)>0, \ell(y)>0$ for $y>0,k(0)=\ell(0)=0$ and $lim_{y\rightarrow 0}k(y)/\ell(y)$ exists, is strictly hyperbolic for $y>0$ and its order degenerates on the line $y=0$. We consider the boundary value problem $Lu=f(x,y,u)$ in $G, u\mid_{AC}=0$, where $G$ is a simply connected domain in $R^2$ with piecewise smooth boundary $\partial G=AB\cup AC\cup BC; AB=\{(x,0): 0\leq x\leq 1\}, AC : x=F(y) =\int_0^y(k(t)/\ell (t))^{1/2}dt$ and $BC: x=1-F(y)$ are characteristic curves. The existence and uniqueness of a generalized solution to this problem are proved in the linear case (where $f=f(x,y));$ the nonlinear case is treated by using the Schauder Fixed …

Alternative Polynomial And Holomorphic Dunford-Pettis Properties, Walden Freedman Jan 1999

Alternative Polynomial And Holomorphic Dunford-Pettis Properties, Walden Freedman

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Alternatives to the Polynomial Dunford-Pettis property and the Holomorphic Dunford-Pettis property, called the PDP1 and HDP1 properties, respectively, are introduced. These are shown to be equivalent to the DP1 property, an alternative Dunford-Pettis property previously introduced by the author, thus mirroring the equivalence of the three original properties.

A Class Of Banach Algebras Whose Duals Have The Schur Property, H. Mustafayev, A. Ülger Jan 1999

A Class Of Banach Algebras Whose Duals Have The Schur Property, H. Mustafayev, A. Ülger

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Call a commutative Banach algebra $A$ a $\gamma$-algebra if it contains a bounded group $\Gamma$ such that $\overline{aco(\Gamma)}$ contains a multiple of the unit ball of $A$. In this paper, first by exhibiting several concrete examples, we show that the class of $\gamma$-algebras is quite rich. Then, for a $\gamma$-algebra $A$, we prove that $A^{\star}$ has the Schur property iff the Gelfand spectrum $\sum$ of $A$ is scattered iff $A^{\star}=ap(A)$ iff $A^{\star}=\overline{Span(\sum)}$.

The Weight Equations For Binary Linear Codes, Ersan Akyildiz, İsmai̇l Ş. Güloğlu, Masatoshi Ikeda Jan 1999

The Weight Equations For Binary Linear Codes, Ersan Akyildiz, İsmai̇l Ş. Güloğlu, Masatoshi Ikeda

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

The system of weight equations for a binary $(n, m)$-code with respect to its ordered basis is introduced. It connects certain quantities (characteristics) related to the basis with the weights of non-zero words in the code. It is shown that the portion involving the variables does not depend neither on the code nor on the basis. Explicit forms of the matrix of coefficients in the system and its inverse matrix are computed.

On The Artin Conductor F_{Artin}(\Chi) Of A Character \Chi Of Gal (E/K) I: Basic Definitions, Kazim İlhan İkeda

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Let $K$ be a local field with finite residue class field and $E$ a finite Galois extension over $K$. In this paper, we study the Artin conductor $\frak f_{\rm Artin}(\chi_\rho)$ of a character $\chi_\rho$ associated to a representation $\rho:\mbox{Gal}(E/K)\rightarrow GL(V)$ of $\mbox{Gal}(E/K)$ with metabelian kernel $\mbox{ker}(\rho)$. In order to do so, we first review the Artin character $a_{\mbox{Gal}(E/K)}$ of $\mbox{Gal}(E/K)$ and review the metabelian local class field theory. We finally propose the definition of the conductor $\frak f(E/K)$ of a metabelian extension $E/K$ in the sense of Koch-de Shalit local class field theory, and compute $\frak f_{\rm Artin}(\chi_\rho)$ under a …

On The Asymptotic Behavior Of Heegner Points, Jan Nekovar, Norbert Schappacher

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

We prove that all but finitely many Heegner points on a given modular elliptic curve (or, more generally, on a given quotient of the modular Jacobian variety $J_0(N)$) are of infinite order in the Mordell-Weil group where they naturally live, i.e., over the corresponding ring class field.

Search For The Standard Model Higgs Boson At The Lep2 Collider Near √S = 183 Gev, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas Jan 1999

Search For The Standard Model Higgs Boson At The Lep2 Collider Near √S = 183 Gev, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

During 1997 the ALEPH experiment at LEP gathered 57pb−1 of data at centre-of-mass energies near 183 GeV. These data are used to look for possible signals from the production of the Standard Model Higgs boson in the reaction e+e−→HZ. No evidence of a signal is found in the data; seven events are selected, in agreement with the expectation of 7.2 events from background processes. This observation results in an improved lower limit on the mass of the Higgs boson: mH>87.9GeV/c2 at 95% confidence level.

Nonparametric Estimation Of The Survival Function Based On Censored Data With Additional Observations From The Residual Distribution, Paul Kvam, Harshinder Singh, Ram C. Tiwari Jan 1999

Nonparametric Estimation Of The Survival Function Based On Censored Data With Additional Observations From The Residual Distribution, Paul Kvam, Harshinder Singh, Ram C. Tiwari

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

We derive the nonparametric maximum likelihood estimator (NPMLE) of the distribution of the test items using a random, right-censored sample combined with an additional right-censored, residual-lifetime sample in which only lifetimes past a known, fixed time are collected. This framework is suited for samples for which individual test data are combined with left-truncated and randomly censored data from an operating environment. The NPMLE of the survival function using the combined sample is identical to the Kaplan-Meier product-limit estimator only up to the time at which the test items corresponding to the residual sample were known to survive. The limiting distribution …

A Unified Approach To Difference Sets With Gcd(V, N) > 1, James A. Davis, Jonathan Jedwab Jan 1999

A Unified Approach To Difference Sets With Gcd(V, N) > 1, James A. Davis, Jonathan Jedwab

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

The five known families of difference sets whose parameters (v, k, λ; n) satisfy the condition gcd(v,n) > 1 are the McFarland, Spence, Davis-Jedwab, Hadamard and Chen families. We survey recent work which uses recursive techniques to unify these difference set families, placing particular emphasis on examples. This unified approach has also proved useful for studying semi-regular relative difference sets and for constructing new symmetric designs.

Codes, Correlations And Power Control In Ofdm, James A. Davis, Jonathan Jedwab, Kenneth G. Paterson

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

Practical communications engineering is continually producing problems of interest to the coding theory community. A recent example is the power-control problem in Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM). We report recent work which gives a mathematical framework for generating solutions to this notorious problem that are suited to low-cost wireless applications. The key result is a connection between Golay complementary sequences and Reed-Muller codes. The former are almost ideal for OFDM transmissions because they have a very low peak-to-mean envelope power ratio (PMEPR), while the latter have efficient encoding and decoding algorithms and good error correction capability. This result is then …

Reality And Theory In A Collision, Norman Derby, Robert Fuller Jan 1999

Reality And Theory In A Collision, Norman Derby, Robert Fuller

Robert G. Fuller Publications

Billiard-ball collisions are frequently cited in introductory physics textbooks, usually as examples of elastic collisions. Many articles describing such collisions have appeared in this journal and elsewhere, but comparisons between theoretical results and actual collisions are rare, and most of the theoretical analyses have simply assumed friction to be negligible during the collision time. Students trying to simulate billiard-ball collisions on a popular simulation program such as Interactive Physics® may encounter interesting collisions, such as ones in which the cue ball is thrown up into the air when the frictional coefficients are set at even modest levels. We decided …

1999 Wildlife Management Area Threatened And Endangered Species Inventory, Final Report, Robert F. Steinauer Jan 1999

1999 Wildlife Management Area Threatened And Endangered Species Inventory, Final Report, Robert F. Steinauer

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

This study was undertaken to determine the extent of threatened and endangered (T&E) species habitats and high-quality native plant communities on Nebraska Game and Parks Commission (NGPC) Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs). The Nebraska Natural Heritage Program (NHP) is responsible for environmental reviews of state projects that may impact threatened and endangered (T&E) species in Nebraska, including proposed management actions on state Wildlife Management Areas (WMA). These environmental reviews require a significant amount of NHP staff time, and frequently find no adverse impacts associated with the proposed management actions. This survey was undertaken to improve Nebraska Game and Parks Commissions (NGPC) …

Inventory Of The Central Mixed-Grass Prairie Ecoregion Of Kansas And Nebraska, Hillary Loring, Mike Bullerman, Kelly Kindscher

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

An inventory of potential high quality mixed-grass prairie ranches and large properties within the Central Mixed-Grass Prairie Ecoregion of Kansas and Nebraska was conducted in the spring and summer of 1999. Emphasis during the inventory was placed on identification of relatively intact landscapes. Significant ranches within those untilled landscapes were visited. An interview of the owners or managers of those properties was coupled with a survey of the vegetation. Assessments of quality were based on species composition, continuity of ground cover, observations of livestock impact, and viability of the community types present.

The objectives of this study were to:

1) …

Multi-User Domain Object Oriented (Moo) As A High School Procedure For Foreign Language Acquisition, James A. Backer Jan 1999

Multi-User Domain Object Oriented (Moo) As A High School Procedure For Foreign Language Acquisition, James A. Backer

CCE Theses and Dissertations

Foreign language students experience added difficulty when they are isolated from native speakers and from the culture of the target language. It has been posited that MOOs (Multiuser domain Object Oriented) may help to overcome the geographical isolation of these students. MOOs are Internet-based virtual worlds in which people from all over the real world meet for synchronous textual conversations and can interact with asynchronous textual objects found there. Students who enjoy a MOO site may identify with its virtual target language community and find integrative motivation which the literature suggests is necessary for advanced language acquisition.

This study focused …

Linking Printed Books To Computerized Speech, Edward D. Crook Jan 1999

Linking Printed Books To Computerized Speech, Edward D. Crook

CCE Theses and Dissertations

Adult students who experience difficulties in comprehending written (printed) language frequently are limited in their scholastic development and possible employment opportunities. These individuals, who represent a growing segment of the learning disabled population, include poor readers and dyslexics and they routinely seek help and remediation through various educational techniques. One remediation technique often used is "books on tape". Through books on tape, recorded spoken text is presented in a sequential manner to the remedial reader as he or she is reading the corresponding printed document. This dissertation reviewed the books on tape paradigm, and through the use of current computer …

International Usability, Design Guidelines And Effectiveness Of A World Wide Web-Based Instructional Program For High School Students In A Cross-Culture Learning Environment, Hajime Hayakawa

CCE Theses and Dissertations

The recent growth of the Internet and the World Wide Web (WWW) has resulted in a vast array of on-line courseware and educational Web sites. Unfortunately, as a large percentage of this information is written in English, non-English speakers are unable to access it. Information written in other languages is likewise unavailable to many native English speakers. Therefore, in order to maximize the usefulness of educational material on the Web, it is necessary to design and implement cross-cultural, bilingual or multilingual Web sites and instructional programs.

This study was designed to contribute to the area of bilingual learning on the …

A Theoretical Model For A Prescription Drug Public Key Cryptographic System, Donald R. Lemma Jan 1999

A Theoretical Model For A Prescription Drug Public Key Cryptographic System, Donald R. Lemma

CCE Theses and Dissertations

A critical component of a physician's duties is prescribing medication to his or her patients. This process is handled by the physician writing a prescription for a medication and having the medication dispensed to the named patient. A review of federal law reveals no requirement that the prescription be issued on any type of specific written instrument such as safety paper, multi-part forms, or other standardized documents.

Because of the lack of adequate controls, there is a serious problem with false and altered prescriptions being issued within the United States. A 1994 study by the White House Office of National …
