An Examination Of The Self-Perceptions Of The Physical Environment And Psychological Health Of Latina Women Living In The St. Columbia Neighborhood Of Newark, New Jersey, Veronica Maria Maya

Theses

A correlation between perceptions of environmental quality and psychological health has been established in a sample of Latina women. Three psychological scales exist to measure psychological constructs such as learned helplessness, hopelessness, and selfesteem. These three scales have been used in conjunction with an environmental survey designed to capture the perceptions of the sample to their physical environment.

The mean of scores for each psychological construct in the Latina sample were compared to the mean of scores for these constructs in independent samples of oncology, hemodialysis, and spinal cord injured patients being treated for depression. This comparison yields the following …

Sustainable Green Manufacturing Of Energetic Materials, Ted Alex Formeza May 1999

Sustainable Green Manufacturing Of Energetic Materials, Ted Alex Formeza

Theses

Pollution from manufacturing processes of the major energetic materials currently used in the U.S., 1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazacyclohexane (RDX), 1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7 tetraazacyclooctane (HMX) was briefly evaluated. It was found that acetic acid was a major pollutant. It appeared that the British Process could be controlled to reduce the polluting effluents better than the Bachmann Process used in the U.S. Most of the effort for producing the next generation of energetic materials is currently centered around the production of 1,3,3-trinitroazetidine (TNAZ). We evaluated five synthetic routes for producing TNAZ. We reduced the number of potential processes by carefully considering possible changes in the schemes that …

History Of Oxygenated Gasoline Use In New Jersey 1992-1998, Jean Niebuhr Borne May 1999

History Of Oxygenated Gasoline Use In New Jersey 1992-1998, Jean Niebuhr Borne

Theses

New Jersey has been required to use oxygenated gasoline from November 1 to March 30 since 1992 in order to reduce carbon monoxide from vehicles. This requirement was part of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. For the past six winters, New Jersey has utilized gasoline with methyl butyl tertiary ether, MTBE, as the oxygenate. In New Jersey, and in many states across the country, health complaints were reported after oxygenated fuel started flowing from gas pumps.

Oxybusters is a grassroots organization dedicated to the removal of oxygenated gasoline off the market. The group has pressured Governor Whitman to …

Engel Curve Estimation From Budget Data Relating To Short Reference Periods., Suchismita Ghosh Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The main motivation of the present dissertation is the estimation of engel elasticities of certain items of consumption after eliminating the possible effects of seasonal and other short-run fluctuations from household budget data. Indian budget data provided by the National Sample Survey Organization (NSSO), mainly relating to the 38th round (January - December, 1983), has been utilized for the study. Such data generally relate to a moving reference period of 'last 30 days' preceding the date of interview (also referred to as the last month reference period). The use of such a reference period introduces errors in observation in both …

Lewis Carroll: Author, Mathematician, And Christian, David L. Neuhouser

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1999

Although a Christian, an author, and a mathematician, Charles Letwidge Dodgson (better known as Lewis Carroll) wrote very few works in which these three aspects of his person was present. The only examples of him merging these interests are in Sylvie and Bruno and Sylvie and Bruno Concluded. This paper will explore what motivated him to make these works and whether or not they were successful.

Tracking The Trochoid On Safari, Andrew Simoson

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1999

While on sabbatical in Dar es Salaam in 1997–98, I was tasked to be the department’s seminar director and discovered that a dearth of speakers roam about in east Africa; so I opted to set up a lecture tour for myself to include Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Botswana as well as Tanzania—and spoke about the envelope of curves generated by a series of line segments obtained when two runners attached by an ideal bungee cord (the line segments) proceed about a circular track. Herein we describe life in east Africa and show that those envelopes are trochoids.

A Mathematician At The Science And Theology Book Club, Greg Crow

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1999

This paper is a case study of the insights gained and the contributions made in a weekly Science and Theology Faculty Book Club. The contribution of other group members to the expansion of one’s general understanding of their fields is demonstrated in increased vocabulary, use of existing theoretical models, glimpses of the depth of their disciplines, and in the recognition of the need for humility. The mathematician may contribute by helping to clarify definitions, by applying basic ideas in their own and related fields, and only very rarely by bringing their own research to the table.

The Influence Of Heat On The Measurement Of Photocurrent At The Anodic Film Of Nickel Electrode, Hang Chen, Zhiyu Jiang May 1999

The Influence Of Heat On The Measurement Of Photocurrent At The Anodic Film Of Nickel Electrode, Hang Chen, Zhiyu Jiang

Journal of Electrochemistry

The influence of heat on the measurement of photocurrent for nickel electrode in 1 mol/L NaOH solution was investigated by using the photocurrent, photothermal and thermal current methods. It was found that the appearance of photocurrent in potential region of -0.750.20 V(vs. Hg/HgO electrode) was due to the p_type semiconductor properties of Ni(OH)2 film in which is agree with the previous report. In the Ni(OH)2/NiOOH redox potential region, the increase of temperature at the surface of working electrode during irradiation significantly promoted the electrochemical reaction strongly. The photocurrent observed in potential region 0.200.57 V is mainly attributed to the influence of …

The Influential Factors On The Triboelectrochemical Behaviors Of The Passive Alloys, Dongbai Sun, Tao Li, Hongying Yu, Dejun Yang

Journal of Electrochemistry

The tribocorrosion process of Fe_Cr alloys with different Cr content in H2SO4 solution was investigated. The influence of applied load, friction velocity, Cr content and concentration of H2SO4 in solution on the triboelectrochemical behaviors of the alloys was analyzed. It is shown that applied load and friction velocity have singnificant influence on the tribocurrent density in passive region when friction process occurs on part of the surface of alloy.Increasing the corrosion resistance of alloys or decreasing the aggressive of the solution can reduce the alloy removal velocity.

Investigation Of Solution Chemistry In Crevice Of Carbon Steel And Its Anodic Polarization Behavior, Zhuo Chen, Cuiwei Du, Bei Cao, Yinshun Wu, Hai Yang, Zhengrong Zhang

Journal of Electrochemistry

A self_made wedge_shaped simulated crevice apparatus was designed to investigate the solution chemistry in crevice of carbon steel and its anodic polarization behavior. For carbon steel with 3.5%(wt) NaCl , the change and the distribution of electrode potential , concentration of Cl- and pH value of solution in the crevice, and the current density of metal in the crevice were measured respectively under various conditions of anodic polarization. The results showed that without polarization the metal about 2 cm away from the opening of the crevice was attacked preferentially because of its lowest free corrosion potential. The anodic polarization promoted …

A Study On The Cathode Protection Potential Against Pitting Corrosion, Chunchun Xu, Youping Liu, Xiaobo Zhang, Xuhui Zhao May 1999

A Study On The Cathode Protection Potential Against Pitting Corrosion, Chunchun Xu, Youping Liu, Xiaobo Zhang, Xuhui Zhao

Journal of Electrochemistry

The methods have been developed to determine the protection potential against pitting corrosion. They are based on the theory that the pitting protection potential(Ep) is actually the transition potential of the direction of current between the occluded cell and the external surface (ET).ET lasts from -220 mV to -440 mV(SCE), the lowest of which can be considered as cathode protection potential. The Ep values determined with cyclic potentiodynamic polarization method is included in the ET with above methods.

Oxidation And Adsorption Of Deoxyribonucleic Acid At Highly Ordered Pyrolytic Graphite And Glass Carbon Electrode, Jianzhang Zhou, Lingling Wu, Jin Luo, Zhonghua Lin May 1999

Oxidation And Adsorption Of Deoxyribonucleic Acid At Highly Ordered Pyrolytic Graphite And Glass Carbon Electrode, Jianzhang Zhou, Lingling Wu, Jin Luo, Zhonghua Lin

Journal of Electrochemistry

It is shown that calf thymus DNA(CT DNA) can be adsorbed at highly ordered pyrolytic graphite(HOPG) electrode and detected by differential pulse voltammetry(DPV) and electrochemical atomic force microscopy(ECAFM). It is found that controlled potential pre-polarization influences largely the adsorption of dsDNA while it has little influence on ssDNA. It is demonstrated that ECAFM is useful to exploit adsorption of DNA at HOPGE. The pattern of adsorption of DNA at HOPG electrode that fits best with the experimental data is proposed. The results aslo shows that UV/Vis reflection spectroscopy, which has not been used in studying electrochemical behavior of DNA, is …

Study On The Hydrogen Permeation Through Zinc Electrodeposit, Jiangli Cao, Jixun Wu, Yanping Lu, Jie Shi

Journal of Electrochemistry

The electrochemical hydrogen_permeation technique was used to study hydrogen permeation through zinc electrodeposit with bilayer specimens of Fe substrate/zinc electrodeposit. The effect of coating thickness on hydrogen diffusion coefficient and hydrogen steady-state flux was studied. The results showed that hydrogen diffusion coefficient was approximately in the range of 10-11 cm2s-1 rank and zinc coating could retard hydrogen permeation. Accordingly, hydrogen steady_state flux and effective diffusion coefficient declined while the coating thickness increased.

Influence Of Ptfe And Nafion On The Utilizationefficiency Of Pt/C Catalyst In Pemfc, Xiaoliang Cheng, Baolian Yi, Jingxin Zhang, Ming Han, Yaguang Qiao

Journal of Electrochemistry

With cycling voltammetry curve(C-V), TEM and SEM photographs, the influence of PTFE and Nafion on the platinum utilization in catalyst layer of PEMFC was investigated. The results show that in gas diffusion electrode, the blocking effect of PTFE in the platinum utilization is not pronunced. In the thin_film catalyst layer, the electron conduct of the catalyst was blocked by the nafion solid and this caused the decrease of platinum utilization. With the increase of the nafion content in the catalyst layer, both platinum utilization and the electron conductivity decreased in the catalyst layer. Because the molecule size of nafion is …

International Joint Ventures And Technology Transfer In Developing Economies., Arijit Mukherjee Dr. May 1999

International Joint Ventures And Technology Transfer In Developing Economies., Arijit Mukherjee Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Economic development is a continuous process of improvement and upgradation of the existing technological knowledge and their applications. This can be done in more than one way. Countries can acquire superior knowledge through a risky process of self-financed indigenous innovation. This may, however, been proved to be an expensive and time consuming process. Direct and indirect import of technologies are other ways of getting advanced knowledge. Technological change that has been taking place in most of the developing countries is partly the result of import of technologies from the industrially advanced economies. Multinational companies (MNCS) may potentially act as agents …

Effects Of Nickel Content And Simulated Heat Affected Zone Of 2205 Duplex Stainless Steel On Pitting Corrosion, Horngyih Liou, Jutung Lee, Wenta Tsai

Journal of Electrochemistry

The effects of nickel content and Gleeble simulated heat affected zone(HAZ) of 2205 stainless steel on pitting corrosion were investigated in this paper. The results showed that nickel content, ranging from 4.5 wt% to 6.5 wt% in base metal, had only a minor effect on the electrochemical polarization curves, with all Enp's and Epp's falling in the rang of 1 1001200 mV. Comparing with the base metal, the simulated HAZ microstructure caused an increase in the anodic current density, a distinct decrease in both Enp and Epp , and a reduction in the passive range. Furthermore, hysteresis behavior was found …

The Adsorption Stability Of Interface Corrosion Inhibitor, Fuxing Gan, Dihua Wang, Jinyun Zou

Journal of Electrochemistry

Some new results on the adsorption stability of interface corrosion inhibitor are presented. The concept of adsorption stability and the factors influencing the adsorption stability were discussed. It is shown that the anodic desorption potential can be employed to evaluate the adsorption stability of the inhibitor as an empirical character in some conditions. Electrochemical oscillations phenomena were observed for the first time on a rotating iron electrode in H2SO4 solution containing organic inhibitor in the active potential region. These potentiostatic current oscillations can occur under cathodic polarization, as well as under anodic plarization. The oscillation period, amplitude, incubation time and …
