Conditioning And Habituation Of White-Tailed Deer To Two Common Deterrents, George R. Gallagher, Jennifer L. Peacock, Elizabeth P. Garner, Robert H. Prince

Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings

It was hypothesized white-tailed deer {Odocoileus virginianus) could be readily conditioned to 2 commonly used deterrents, Deer-Away® Big Game Repellent (BGR) and blood meal (BM). Plots were randomly assigned BGR, BM and control. Free-ranging deer were initially conditioned to forage for corn at each 49m2 bare earth plots delivered at 0500 hr and 1600 hr by programmable sling-type feeders. Hoof prints were counted within a 3.7m2 sample area of each plot to quantify activity. Following preconditioning, data were collected during 5, 5-day periods. Application of BGR and BM to their respective bare earth plots occurred during periods 2,4 and 5. …

FePt/B2O3 multilayers were deposited by magnetron sputtering onto 7059 glass substrates. By annealing the as-deposited films at 550 °C, nanostructured FePt:B2O3 films consisting of FePt grains with L10 structure, embedded in a glassy B2O3 matrix, were obtained. The c axes of the FePt grains can be made to align with the film normal direction, which results in a perpendicular anisotropy constant of 3.5×107 erg/cc. The films remain layered structures after annealing when the B2O3 layer thickness exceeds 16 Å. The nanostructure of the films was investigated by …

Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs, Acetaminophen, Cyclooxygenase 2, And Fever, Daniel L. Simmons, David Wagner, Kenneth Westover

Faculty Publications

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are frequently used antipyretic agents that most probably exert their antifever effect by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX)–2. Thus, COX-2–selective drugs or null mutation of the COX-2 gene reduce or prevent fever. Acetaminophen is antipyretic and analgesic, as are NSAIDs, but it lacks the anti-inflammatory and anticoagulatory properties of these drugs. This has led to the speculation that a COX variant exists that is inhibitable by acetaminophen. An acetaminophen-inhibitable enzyme is inducible in the mouse J774.2 monocyte cell line. Induction of acetaminophen-inhibitable prostaglandin E2 synthesis parallels induction of COX-2. Thus, inhibition of pharmacologically distinct COX-2 enzyme activity by …

Potential Use Of Noaa/Avhrr Satellite Data For Monitoring Environmental Change In Turkey, Ali Umran Komuscu

Drought Network News (1994-2001)

In Turkey, desertification has been taking place in areas of low rainfall and minimal vegetative cover. In particular, the central, eastern, and southeastern parts of the country are vulnerable to desertification because of erosion, deforestation, and degradation of vegetative cover. Rivers of those regions are characterized by very high sediment yields. Nearly 60% of the country’s soils are subjected to severe erosion and approximately 450 million tons of sediment are carried to rivers each year. Meanwhile, wind erosion has been a very effective desertification process in central and southeastern parts of the country, where annual rainfall varies around 400–500 mm/year. …

Drought Network News (1994-2001)

Effective drought early warning systems are an integral part of efforts worldwide to improve drought preparedness. Timely and reliable data and information must be the cornerstone of effective drought policies and plans. In pursuit of the goal of improving the effectiveness of drought early warning systems, participants of the experts meeting were asked to address three fundamental questions:

1. What is your assessment of the current status of drought early warning systems?
2. What are the shortcomings, limitations, and needs for drought early warning systems?
3. How can drought early warning systems be improved to better support drought preparedness and …

Using The Spi To Monitor The 1999-2000 Drought In Northeastern Argentina, Roberto Zanvettor, Andres Ravelo

Drought Network News (1994-2001)

Drought risk is a major concern across many regions of Argentina because precipitation is extremely variable. One of these regions, the Pampas, is the main agricultural and livestock production area, extending over 60 million hectares. This region was recently surveyed to detect, monitor, and assess the occurrence of drought using a network of 27 meteorological stations and the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), developed by McKee et al. (1993). The SPI has various categories that define drought intensities. A period is considered humid when the SPI value is greater than +1 and a period is considered dry when the value of …

Robotic System Sensitivity To Neural Network Learning Rate: Theory, Simulation, And Experiments, Christopher M. Clark, James K. Mills

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Selection of neural network learning rates to obtain satisfactory performance from neural network controllers is a challenging problem. To assist in the selection of learning rates, this paper investigates robotic system sensitivity to neural network (NN) learning rate. The work reported here consists of experimental and simulation results. A neural network controller module, developed for the purpose of experimental evaluation of neural network controller performance of a CRS Robotics Corporation A460 robot, allows testing of NN controllers using real-time iterative learning. The A460 is equipped with a joint position proportional, integral, and derivative (PID) controller. The neural network module supplies …

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

Structural, thermobarometric, and thermochronologic investigations of the Kangmar Dome, southern Tibet, suggest that both extensional and contractional deformational histories are preserved within the dome. The dome is cored by an orthogneiss which is mantled by staurolite + kyanite zone metasedimentary rocks; metamorphic grade dies out up section and is defined by a series of concentric kyanite-in, staurolite-in, garnet-in, and chloritoid-in isograds. Three major deformational events, two older penetrative events and a younger doming event, are preserved. The oldest event, D1, resulted in approximately E-W trending tight to isoclinal folds of bedding with an associated moderately to steeply north dipping axial …

Use Of Goes Thermal Infrared Imagery For Eruption Scale Measurements, Soufrière Hills, Montserrat, William I. Rose, Gari C. Mayberry

Department of Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences Publications

GOES two-band IR data are used to estimate the magnitude of small eruption clouds (ash; <∼105 tonnes of fine [1–25 µm in diameter] ash, and 5–15 km asl). The method is demonstrated on clouds from Soufrière Hills Volcano, Montserrat in 1997–99. The clouds in early 1999 were much smaller, were generally emplaced lower in the atmosphere and contained an order of magnitude less fine ash than 1997 clouds generated during the most intense phase of the eruption to date. Although GOES has an excellent capability for large eruption clouds, its use for smaller eruptions like Montserrat highlights several shortcomings, including …

Powre: Driven Nonequilibrium Systems With Quenched Disorder: A Renormalization-Group Study, Susan R. Mckay

University of Maine Office of Research Administration: Grant Reports

This theory project develops a position-space renormalization-group approach to study driven diffusive lattice gases; the theory will be modified and applied to interacting cases and systems with quenched randomness. Systems driven far from equilibrium are prevalent in nature and particularly challenging with respect to fundamental understanding and property prediction. The models to be studied in this project are simple prototypes related to a variety of complex systems such as biological populations, binary fluid flow through random media, and fast ionic conductors. This is a research enhancement grant made under the Professional Opportunities for Women in Research and Education (POWRE) program. …

Classes Of Logic Programs Which Possess Unique Supported Models, Anthony K. Seda, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

Logic programming is concerned with the use of logic as a programming language. The main manifestation of this computing paradigm is in the various versions of Prolog which are now available, in which computation is viewed as deduction from sets of Horn clauses, although there is also growing interest in the related form known as answer set programming, see [10]. The reference [1] contains a good survey of the growth of logic programming over the last twenty-five years both as a stand-alone programming language and as a software component of large information systems. One advantage a logic program P has …

Dealing With A Dry Season, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia Oct 2000

Dealing With A Dry Season, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia

Bulletins 4000 -

Farmers' approaches to adverse seasonal conditions whether they be frost, flood or low rainfall should be to acquire as much information as possible on the immediate agronomic and financial situations and make a judgement on the longer term implications for the following seasons. Once the information has been acquired, in consultation with advisers, it is necessary to construct and implement agronomic and business strategies to deal with individual situations.

The agronomic and stocking options for the dry season supplied in this booklet deal with questions and issues arising from the Year 2000 season, which has been characterised by a mid …

Correlations Between Burrowing Owl And Black-Tailed Prairie Dog Declines: A 7-Year Analysis, Martha J. Desmond, Julie A. Savidge, Kent M. Eskridge

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Concern over the status of species associated with prairie dog colonies has increased with the recent proposed listing of black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus). We monitored burrowing owl (Athene cunicularia) populations and prairie dog densities in 17 black-tailed prairie dog colonies in the Nebraska panhandle between 1990 and 1996. All prairie dog colonies were controlled at least once during the study. We observed a 63% decline in nesting pairs of burrowing owls and significant declines in burrow densities. Results indicated a time lag in owl response to changes in active burrow densities. However, in the later …

A Class Of Semiparametric Scale-Change Hazards Regression Models And Its Adequacy For Censored Survival Data, Ying Qing Chen Oct 2000

A Class Of Semiparametric Scale-Change Hazards Regression Models And Its Adequacy For Censored Survival Data, Ying Qing Chen

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

A class of semiparametric hazards regression models called the accelerated hazards models was introduced to identify the covariate effect characterized by the scale-change between hazard functions. In this article, we compare the accelerated hazards models with several other popular classes of regression models in statistical literature for censored survival data. We also propose and study some test statistics to assess the models' adequacy. Simulation studies are conducted to evaluate the performance of the test statistics. Actual clinical trials data are analyzed to demonstrate the proposed models and test statistics.

The Influence Of Wave– And Zonal Mean–Ozone Feedbacks On The Quasi-Biennial Oscillation, Eugene Cordero, Terrence R. Nathan Oct 2000

The Influence Of Wave– And Zonal Mean–Ozone Feedbacks On The Quasi-Biennial Oscillation, Eugene Cordero, Terrence R. Nathan

Faculty Publications, Meteorology and Climate Science

The effects of wave and zonal mean ozone heating on the evolution of the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) are examined using a two-dimensional mechanistic model of the equatorial stratosphere. The model atmosphere is governed by coupled equations for the zonal mean and (linear) wave fields of ozone, temperature, and wind, and is driven by specifying the amplitudes of a Kelvin wave and a Rossby–gravity wave at the lower boundary. Wave–mean flow interactions are accounted for in the model, but not wave–wave interactions.

A reference simulation (RS) of the QBO, in which ozone feedbacks are neglected, is carried out and the results …

Performance Analysis Of Mobile Agents For Filtering Data Streams On Wireless Networks, David Kotz, George Cybenko, Robert S. Gray, Guofei Jiang, Ronald A. Peterson, Martin O. Hofmann, Daria A. Chacon, Kenneth R. Whitebread

Computer Science Technical Reports

Wireless networks are an ideal environment for mobile agents, since their mobility allows them to move across an unreliable link to reside on a wired host, next to or closer to the resources that they need to use. Furthermore, client-specific data transformations can be moved across the wireless link and run on a wired gateway server, reducing bandwidth demands. In this paper we examine the tradeoffs faced when deciding whether to use mobile agents in a data-filtering application where numerous wireless clients filter information from a large data stream arriving across the wired network. We develop an analytical model and …

As a case study of the solar-stellar connection, we have analysed a prolonged time series of BV photometry of the chromospherically active binary V815 Her . The surface differential rotation in the rapidly rotating G5{v} primary caused changes of 4.6% in the seasonal photometric rotation periods. This would imply a differential rotation coefficient of k = 0.184, if the rotation of the starspots follows the solar law of differential rotation and the activity is confined within the same latitudinal range as in the Sun, having k = 0.189 and the spectral-type of G2{v}. Our analysis of the primary and secondary …

Two K Giants With Supermeteoritic Lithium Abundances: Hde 233517 And Hd 9746, Suchitra C. Balachandran, Francis C. Fekel, Gregory W. Henry, Han Uitenbroek

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

Two unusual Li-rich K giants, HDE 233517 and HD 9746, have been studied. Optical spectroscopy and photometry have been obtained to determine the fundamental parameters of HDE 233517, a single K2 III with an extremely large infrared excess. The spectra yield Teff=4475 K, logg=2.25, [Fe/H]=-0.37, vsini=17.6 km s-1, and a non-LTE logɛ(7Li)=4.22. Photometric observations reveal low-amplitude light variability with a period of 47.9 days. Combined with other parameters, this results in a minimum radius of 16.7 Rsolar and minimum distance of 617 pc. Comparison of spectra obtained in 1994 and 1996 show profile variations in Hα and the Na D …
