Lyman-Α Imaging Of A Very Luminous Z = 2.3 Starburst Galaxy With Wfpc2, Nathan Roche, James D. Lowenthal, Bruce Woodgate
Astronomy: Faculty Publications
We investigate the Lyα and UV continuum morphology of one of the most luminous known Lymana emitting galaxies (the 'Coup Fourré Galaxy'), associated with a z = 2.3 damped Lyα absorption system in the spectrum of the QSO PHL 957. The galaxy is observed with the Hubble Space Telescope Wide-Field Planetary Camera 2 (HST WFPC2), through a narrow filter (F410M) corresponding to rest-frame Lyα for a total exposure time of 41.2 ks, plus shorter exposures in F555W and F814W. In all three passbands, the galaxy is resolved into a close (∼0.35 arcsec) pair of two components, CFgA and CFgB, both …

The Aquaculture Of Non-Endemic Species In Western Australia Silver Perch (Bidyanus Bidyanus), Tina Thorne, H. G. Brayford
Fisheries management papers
The development of commercial aquaculture of a non-endemic species such as silver perch raises a number of important issues relating to translocation. These include the potential of the introduced species to: impact on genetic diversity; introduce disease; and impact on - the natural environment; and - the biodiversity of native species. This Management Paper has been drafted in liaison with the Department of Environmental Protection in accordance with the principles of rish assessment, taking into account the above issues. It is considered that the implementation of this policy will protect the natural environment and native fish species. It will also …

Several experimental products derived from Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) Sounder retrievals (vertical profiles of temperature and moisture) have been developed to assist weather forecasters in assessing the potential for convective downbursts. The product suite currently includes the wind index (WINDEX), a dry microburst index, and the maximum difference in equivalent potential temperature (θe) from the surface to 300 hPa. The products are displayed as color-coded boxes or numerical values, superimposed on GOES visible, infrared, or water vapor imagery, and are available hourly, day and night, via the Internet. After two full summers of evaluation, the products have been shown …

Superspin Glass Behaviour Of Interacting Ferromagnetic Nanoparticles In Discontinuous Magnetic Multilayers, Christian Binek
Superspin Glass Behaviour Of Interacting Ferromagnetic Nanoparticles In Discontinuous Magnetic Multilayers, Christian Binek
Christian Binek Publications
Discontinuous magnetic multilayers [Co80Fe20(t)/Al2O3(3nm)]10 with t = 0.9 and 1.0nm are studied by SQUID magnetometry and ac susceptibility. Owing to dipolar interaction the superparamagnetic cluster systems undergo collective glass-like freezing upon cooling. While both samples exhibit very similar glass temperatures Tg » 45 K and critical exponents zn » 10 and g » 1.4 as obtained from the temperature dependencies of the relaxation time, t, and the nonlinear susceptibility, c3, dynamical scaling reveals different critical exponents, b(0.9nm) »1.0 and b(1.0nm) » 0.6, respectively.
Thermodynamics Of Water Superheated In The Microwave Oven, Ben H. Erné, Penny A. Snetsinger
Thermodynamics Of Water Superheated In The Microwave Oven, Ben H. Erné, Penny A. Snetsinger
Chemistry & Physics Faculty Publications
A simple visual demonstration is proposed that provokes thinking about the elementary thermodynamics of heating and boiling. Water is conveniently heated above its normal boiling point in a microwave oven in a glass microwave oven teapot. Water stops boiling soon after heating is interrupted, but subsequently added rough particles can still act as nucleation centers for a brief, spectacular burst of steam bubbles. The heat to make those steam bubbles obviously comes from the water itself, so that one can conclude that the boiling water was superheated, which is confirmed with a thermometer. Besides illustrating chemical thermodynamics, the demonstration also …

Intensification Of The Northeast Pacific Oxygen Minimum Zone During The Bolling-Allerod Warm Period, Yan Zheng, Alexander Van Green, Robert F. Anderson, James V. Gardner, Walter E. Dean
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Although climate records from several locations around the world show nearly synchronous and abrupt changes, the nature of the inferred teleconnection is still poorly understood. On the basis of preserved laminations and molybdenum enrichments in open margin sediments we demonstrate that the oxygen content of northeast Pacific waters at 800 m depth during the Bolling-Allerod warm period (15-13 kyr) was greatly reduced. Existing oxygen isotopic records of benthic and planktonic foraminifera suggest that this was probably due to suppressed ventilation at higher latitudes of the North Pacific. Comparison with ventilation records for the North Atlantic indicates an antiphased pattern of …
The Influence Of Wave– And Zonal Mean–Ozone Feedbacks On The Quasi-Biennial Oscillation, Eugene Cordero, Terrence R. Nathan
The Influence Of Wave– And Zonal Mean–Ozone Feedbacks On The Quasi-Biennial Oscillation, Eugene Cordero, Terrence R. Nathan
Eugene C. Cordero
The effects of wave and zonal mean ozone heating on the evolution of the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) are examined using a two-dimensional mechanistic model of the equatorial stratosphere. The model atmosphere is governed by coupled equations for the zonal mean and (linear) wave fields of ozone, temperature, and wind, and is driven by specifying the amplitudes of a Kelvin wave and a Rossby–gravity wave at the lower boundary. Wave–mean flow interactions are accounted for in the model, but not wave–wave interactions.
A reference simulation (RS) of the QBO, in which ozone feedbacks are neglected, is carried out and the results …

Establishment Of Typical Harmonic Voltage Levels In Radial Distribution Systems, D. A. Robinson, V. J. Gosbell, B. S. Perera, D. J. Mannix
Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)
This paper reports on a simple method to identify problem areas with relation to harmonic distortion within radial distribution systems at the planning stage. The purpose of the work is to produce a simple method of establishing harmonic distortion levels throughout a study distribution system when only limited system data and load information is available. The preliminary work presented in this paper is aimed at establishing useful planning guidelines for utilities to help with the analysis of harmonics in medium voltage (MV) distribution systems during the design phase. Harmonic analysis during the design of a distribution system is seen as …

The metastable Ni3C phase has been produced by mechanically alloying Ni and C. Ni3C particles of diameter 10 nm are produced after 90 h of mechanical alloying with no evidence of crystalline Ni in x ray or electron diffraction. Linear muffin-tin orbital band-structure calculations show that Ni3C is not expected to be ferromagnetic due to strong Ni-C hybridization in the ordered alloy; however, the introduction of even small amounts of disorder produces locally Ni-rich regions that can sustain magnetism. Mechanically alloyed Ni3C is ferromagnetic, with a room-temperature coercivity of 70 Oe and …

The goal of the Water Pollution Control Act of 1972, otherwise known as the Clean Water Act (CWA), is to restore and maintain the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of the waters of the United States. The CWA includes national policies to prohibit discharge of toxic pollutants, and to fund publicly owned wastewater treatment facilities (Cornell 2000).
The CWA prohibits discharge of pollutants by any person through a point source into U.S. waters unless that person has a National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit. NPDES permits include limits on what can be discharged, and monitoring and reporting requirements. The …
Resummation Of Nonalternating Divergent Perturbative Expansions, Ulrich D. Jentschura
Resummation Of Nonalternating Divergent Perturbative Expansions, Ulrich D. Jentschura
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
A method for the resummation of a nonalternating divergent perturbation series is described. The procedure constitutes a generalization of the Borel-Padã method. Of crucial importance is a special integration contour in the complex plane. Nonperturbative imaginary contributions can be inferred from the purely real perturbative coefficients. A connection is drawn from the quantum field theoretic problem of resummation to divergent perturbative expansions in other areas of physics.

We study the phases of the (1+1)-dimensional Non-Commutative Open String theory on a circle. We find that the length scale of non-commutativity increases at strong coupling, the coupling in turn being dressed by a power of D-string charge. The system is stringy at around this length scale, with dynamics involving an interplay between the open and wrapped closed strings sectors. Above this energy scale and at strong coupling, and below it at weak coupling, the system acquires a less stringy character. The near horizon geometry of the configuration exhibits several intriguing features, such as a flip in the dilaton field …

Existence Of Many Positive Nonradial Solutions For A Superlinear Dirichlet Problem On Thin Annuli, Alfonso Castro, Marcel B. Finan
Existence Of Many Positive Nonradial Solutions For A Superlinear Dirichlet Problem On Thin Annuli, Alfonso Castro, Marcel B. Finan
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
We study the existence of many positive nonradial solutions of a superlinear Dirichlet problem in an annulus in RN. Our strategy consists of finding the minimizer of the energy functional restricted to the Nehrai manifold of a subspace of functions with symmetries. The minimizer is a global critical point and therefore is a desired solution. Then we show that the minimal energy solutions in different symmetric classes have mutually different energies. The same approach has been used to prove the existence of many sign-changing nonradial solutions (see [5]).

Electron beam and optical depth profiling of thick (5.5–64 μm) quasibulk n-type GaN samples, grown by hydride vapor-phase epitaxy, were carried out using electron beam induced current (EBIC), microphotoluminescence (PL), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The minority carrier diffusion length, L, was found to increase linearly from 0.25 μm, at a distance of about 5 μm from the GaN/sapphire interface, to 0.63 μm at the GaN surface, for a 36-μm-thick sample. The increase in L was accompanied by a corresponding increase in PL band-to-band radiative transition intensity as a function of distance from the GaN/sapphire interface. We attribute …

The Γ5 and Γ6 free excitons have been identified in GaN from emission measurements. Another emission peak is also observed which we believe to be the longitudinal free exciton. These measurements along with electrical measurements, which show the sample to have very high peak mobility, attest to the high quality of the sample.

Magnetic Properties Of Ni Nanowires In Self-Assembled Arrays, M. Zheng, L. Menon, H. Zeng, Yi Liu, Supriyo Bandyopadhyay, Roger D. Kirby, David J. Sellmyer
Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications
Magnetic properties of Ni nanowires electrodeposited into self-assembled porous alumina arrays have been investigated. By anodizing aluminum in sulfuric acid and immersing the as-anodized template into phosphoric acid for different lengths of time, we are able to vary the diameters of the subsequently deposited nanowires between 8 and 25 nm. The coercivity measured along wire axis first increases with the wire diameter, reaches a maximum of 950 Oe near a diameter of 18 nm, and then decreases with further increase of wire diameter. The dependence of the magnetization of Ni nanowires is found to follow Bloch’s law at low temperature …

Exterior Caustics Produced In Scattering Of A Diagonally Incident Plane Wave By A Circular Cylinder: Semiclassical Scattering Theory Analysis, James A. Lock, Charles L. Adler, Edward A. Hovenac

Rie use the semiclassical limit of electromagnetic wave scattering theory to determine the properties of the exterior caustics of a diagonally incident plane wave scattered by an infinitely long homogeneous dielectric circular cylinder in both the near zone and the far zone. The transmission caustic has an exterior/interior cusp transition as the tilt angle of the incident beam is increased, and each of the rainbow caustics has a far-zone rainbow/exterior cusp transition and an exterior/interior cusp transition as the incident beam tilt angle is increased. We experimentally observe and analyze both transitions of the first-order rainbow. We also compare the …

Semiclassical Theory Of Weighted Spectra For Regular Systems: Absorption Spectra And Decay Rates, M. W. Beims, V. Kondratovich, John B. Delos
Arts & Sciences Articles
We derive a simple semiclassical representation to describe the large-scale structure of the spectrum of regular systems weighted by some arbitrary function W. Examples of weighted spectra are the width-weighted spectrum, which represents the decay rate of an unstable system, and the oscillator-strength-weighted spectrum, which represents the photoabsorption rate. Semiclassical representations of such spectra involve stationary-phase contributions, which are periodic or closed orbits, and end-point contributions, which are loops on an extremal torus. The theory provides the link between semiquantal formulas and the closed-orbit theory of atomic photoabsorption. It also allows calculation of an average decay rate without knowledge …

Multiple Spatial Scale Assessment Of Coral Reef And Hard-Bottom Community Structure In The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, Steven Miller, Dione W. Swanson, Mark Chiappone
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures
The zoning plan for the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS) established 23 relatively small no-fishing zones distributed mostly along the offshore reef tract in 1997. In 1999, a two-stage, stratified random sampling design based on the proportion of coral reef and hard-bottom types within the FKNMS was conducted. Our study focused on differences in coverage, density, and condition of benthic organisms with respect to habitat type, regional variations, and differences between no-fishing zones and reference sites at 80 locations spanning 200 km. Most variables exhibited significant spatial differences by habitat type or between individual no-fishing zones and reference sites …

Investigation Of Optimum Sample Number And Timing For Determining Pollution Loads, T. S. Soerens, Marc A. Nelson
Technical Reports
In order to determine the impacts of non point source (NPS) pollution and to develop Total Maximum Daily Loads (Tr\tfDLs), accurate measurements of pollution loads in streams are critical. The objectives of this study were to accurately detemline pollutant loads at two sites by intensive storm sampling, to develop sub-sampling and other data analysis techniques, to detemline the effect of sample interval on load calculation accuracy, and to find the minimum sample interval required to determine storm loads at a required accuracy. The two stream sites used were a 1st order and a 3rd order stream in the Illinois River …
