The Structure Of Free Semigroup Algebras, Kenneth R. Davidson, Elias Katsoulis, David R. Pitts
The Structure Of Free Semigroup Algebras, Kenneth R. Davidson, Elias Katsoulis, David R. Pitts
Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications
A free semigroup algebra is WOT-closed algebra generated by an n-tuple of isometries with pairwise orthogonal ranges. The interest in these algebras arises primarily from two of their interesting features. The first is that they provide useful information about unitary invariants of representations of the Cuntz-Toeplitz algebras. The second is that they form a class of nonself-adjoint operator algebras which are of interest in their own right. This class contains a distinguished representative, the "non-commutative Toeplitz algebra", which is generated by the left regular representation of the free semigroup on n letters and denoted . This paper provides a general …

Restricted Words By Adjacencies, Don Rawlings
Restricted Words By Adjacencies, Don Rawlings
Mathematics
A recurrence, a determinant formula, and generating functions are presented for enumerating words with restricted letters by adjacencies. The main theorem leads to refinements (with up to two additional parameters) of known results on compositions, polyominoes, and permutations. Among the examples considered are (1) the introduction of the ascent variation on compositions, (2) the enumeration of directed vertically convex polyominoes by upper descents, area, perimeter, relative height, and column number, (3) a tri-variate extension of MacMahon's determinant formula for permutations with prescribed descent set, and (4) a combinatorial setting for an entire sequence of bibasic Bessel functions.

Search For Transits Of A Short-Period, Sub-Saturn Extrasolar Planet Orbiting Hd 46375, Gregory W. Henry
Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications
Precise brightness measurements of HD 46375 have been acquired with an automatic telescope to search for transits of its short-period, sub-Saturn extrasolar planet. Transits of the companion do not occur, indicating that the inclination of the orbit i is less than 83° and sin i is less than 0.992. This upper limit on sin i still preserves the possibility that the mass of the planet is less than Saturn's. Analysis of the photometry for HD 46375 reveals no photometric variability larger than 0.0001 ± 0.0002 mag at the orbital period of the planet. This effectively eliminates starspots and stellar pulsations …

Electron Acceleration And The Propagation Of Ultrashort High-Intensity Laser Pulses In Plasmas, Xiaofang Wang, Mohan Krishnan, Ned Saleh, Haiwen Wang, Donald P. Umstadter
Donald Umstadter Publications
Reported are interactions of high-intensity laser pulses ( λ = 810 nm and l≤3×1018 W/cm2) with plasmas in a new parameter regime, in which the pulse duration ( τ = 29 fs) corresponds to 0.6–2.6 plasma periods. Relativistic filamentation is observed to cause laser-beam breakup and scattering of the beam out of the vacuum propagation angle. A beam of megaelectronvolt electrons with divergence angle as small as 1° is generated in the forward direction, which is correlated to the growth of the relativistic filamentation. Raman scattering, however, is found to be much less than previous long-pulse …

Linear Prediction Incorporating Simultaneous Masking, J Lukasiak, I. S. Burnett, Joe F. Chicharo, M. M. Thomson
Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)
Whilst linear prediction is the cornerstone of most modern speech coders, few of these coders incorporate the perceptual characteristics of hearing into the calculation of the linear predictor coefficients (LPCs). This paper proposes a method of incorporating simultaneous masking into the calculation of the LPCs. This modification requires only a modest increase in computational complexity and results in the linear predictor removing more perceptually important information from the input speech signal. This results in a filter that better models the formants of the input speech spectrum. The net effect is that an improvement in quality is achieved for a given …

Search For Scalar Top Quark Production In Pp̅ Collisions At √S = 1.8 Tev, T. Affolder, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration
Kenneth Bloom Publications
We have searched for direct production of scalar top quarks at the Collider Detector at Fermilab in 88 pb-1 of pp collisions at √s =1.8 TeV. We assume the scalar top quark decays into either a bottom quark and a chargino or a bottom quark, a lepton, and a scalar neutrino. The event signature for both decay scenarios is a lepton, missing transverse energy, and at least two b-quark jets. For a chargino mass of 90 GeV/c2 and scalar neutrino masses of at least 40 GeV/c2, we find no evidence for scalar top …

Lasers come in infrared and visible varieties, but none yet in the x-ray band. A compact and powerful source of coherent x rays is the dream of many physicists, who see applications such as making atomic scale, three-dimensional movies of a melting crystal or an operating photosynthesis protein. In a step toward that goal, a research team has detected high frequency coherent light generated by a new process. As they report in the 12 June PRL, intense laser pulses can stimulate free electrons in a plasma to emit coherent light at triple the input frequency in a narrowly-directed cone. The …

Orbifold Quantum Cohomology, Weimin Chen Chen, Yongbin Ruan

This is a research announcement on a theory of Gromov-Witten invariants and quantum cohomology of symplectic or projective orbifolds. Our project started in the summer of 98 where our original motivation was to study the quantum cohomology under singular flops in complex dimension three. In this setting, we allow our three-fold to have terminal singularities which can be deformed into a symplectic orbifold. We spent the second half of 98 and most of spring of 99 to develop the foundation of Gromov-Witten invariants over orbifolds, including the key conceptual ingredient — the notion of good map. In the April of …
An Economic Cpu-Time Market For D'Agents, Ezra E.K. Cooper
An Economic Cpu-Time Market For D'Agents, Ezra E.K. Cooper
Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses
A usable and efficient resource-management system has been created for use with D'Agents. The software dynamically negotiates a price rate for CPU time, using the competitive bids of mobile agents that offer currency in return for fast computation. The system allows mobile agents to plan their expenditures across many hosts while minimizing the time needed for their tasks. The ability to price CPU time opens the door for service owners to be compensated for the computation consumed by agents and provides an incentive for servers to allow anonymous agents. We discuss the theoretical background which makes a CPU market system …
Registration Of Images With Dissimilar Contrast Using A Hybrid Method Employing Correlation And Mutual Information, Karolyn A. Abram
Registration Of Images With Dissimilar Contrast Using A Hybrid Method Employing Correlation And Mutual Information, Karolyn A. Abram
Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses
The problem of fitting one image into another is commonly called "registration." Finding the best possible translation and rotation necessary to align two images is one approach to solving this problem. Registration is a crucial component of many remote sensing and medical image interpretation applications. Image alignment techniques aid in volumetric estimations of complicated structures and allow radiologists to accurately identify changes between sequential images. Radiologists require image alignment capabilities to correct for patient motion and/or content displacement between images. Numerous image registration techniques exist for correcting the alignment problems mentioned above. Unfortunately, most of these techniques, such as Correlation, …

Hybrid Probabilistic Programs, Alex Dekhtyar, V. S. Subrahmanian
Computer Science and Software Engineering
The precise probability of a compound event (e.g. e1 V e2,e1 Ʌ e2) depends upon the known relationships (e.g. independence, mutual exclusion, ignorance of any relationship, etc.) between the primitive events that constitute the compound event. To date, most research on probabilistic logic programming has assumed that we are ignorant of the relationship between primitive events. Likewise, most research in AI (e.g. Bayesian approaches) has assumed that primitive events are independent. In this paper, we propose a hybrid probabilistic logic programming language in which the user can explicitly associate, with any given probabilistic strategy, a conjunction and disjunction operator, and …

Solar Damage To The Solitary Ascidian, Corella Inflata, Brian L. Bingham, Adam M. Reitzel
Environmental Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications
The ascidian Corella inflata (Chordata, Ascidiacea) is common in many areas of Puget Sound, Washington, USA. However, it occurs only in habitats where it is protected from direct sunlight. Previous experiments with artificial lights showed that UV irradiation kills all life stages of this animal. The effects of natural sunlight exposure (measuring survival of adults, juveniles, larvae, and embryos) were compared. We partitioned the light spectrum to separate the effects of UVB, UVA, and visible light (PAR). Natural sunlight severely damaged C. inflata. Adults and juveniles died after 2-5 d. Exposed embryos failed to develop normally and larvae did …

A neutron spin filter based on transmission through nuclear-spin-polarized He-3 gas has been applied to polarization analysis of small angle neutron scattering (SANS). Such spin filters, which are based on the large spin dependence of the absorption of neutrons by He-3, make SANS polarization analysis possible because of their large angular acceptance. In the present experiment, a He-3-based analyzer was employed to separate nuclear scattering into its coherent and spin-incoherent components. Polarized He-3 analyzers were prepared by two different optical pumping methods and installed on the NG3 SANS instrument at the NIST Center for Neutron Research (NCNR). Measurements were taken …

Aquaculture Plan For The Recherche Archipelago, Fisheries Western Australia.
Fisheries management papers
Land supply and land cost for aquaculture may become a limiting factor in the foreseeable future. At present, adequate appropriately zoned land is available at reasonable cost. The most prospective land for aquaculture in or near Esperance is where suitable zoned land occurs over saline ground water aquifers or adjacent to the coast. Careful site selection would be necessary to ensure water supply, waste water disposal, services and operational space can be achieved at reasonable cost.
